On the outside it looks a bit dark and not as open as cafe 37. We went inside and was greeted by some lovely lad. We chose to sit outside out the back. It was lovely and bright and good atmosphere. Really charming. I ordered the Mexican burger and my gf ordered a build your own breakfast. Food arrived quite quick and lovely staff as usual. The breakfast: Sausage was good, bacon was a bit salty but average really. Mushrooms were delicious and black pudding was good. Mexican Burger: When the menu said it came with salad and chips I thought it meant a side salad. However the salad was in the burger. Not a problem but wasn't expecting cucumber in my burger. Picking up the burger the cucumber and tomatoes slipped right out the bottom. The bottom was wet. I left the salad out and tried again but the burger was just slipping around from wetness and sauce I guess. I ended up using knife and fork and the taste was actually very nice. The Mexican sauce has a little kick. The burger was cooked well with a good taste. Was a thick burger too not some thin cheap rubbish. Shame the bottom bun had gotten wet and soggy. But overall enjoyed the actual taste. The chips that came with the burger were just your average cafe chips. Nothing to write home about. The price for the food was really good though. And the staff are always really happy and welcoming, with the outside being so bright and lovely. read more

I used to walk past Ramon's every day on the way to work and wonder if I should stop by, order and nice big breakfast and call in sick. I really wish I had because I hated that job and I really enjoy a big breakfast. I like the attitude of Ramon's, they do good wholesome food at low prices and don't mess about with it. Neither do they miss a trick; they offer you to bring your own alcohol to dinner (increasingly popular these days) so your costs are kept as low as possible. Okay, so it's not fine dining, but for breakfasts and lunches it doesn't come much better than this for price. The credit crunch meal shows the owners are all too aware of the times and are doing their bit to help out. It can get very busy in the morning and I've seen people unable to get a seat; my guess is they went elsewhere and had to pay a lot more. read more

I'd kind of forgotten about Ramons. I was in a rush, I needed a bacon bap and a coffee and I wasn't sure where to get one. All the greasy spoons had gone and in there place were slightly poncy coffee shops with cappuccinos. And there is was, like a beacon for bacon (oh yeah) in the distance. I went in and checked out the menu. All looked pretty standard. I was hungry and was feeding a friend so a thought a roll would be more filling. I got him a bacon roll, I fell for the temptation of black pudding, ordered a couple of coffees (not a frothy bit in sight), paid and waited. I was getting a bit fractious when I saw another order come out in a carrier bag. It looked like food for half a dozen people and I watched as I expected the chef to walk straight past me. But no, he stopped and gave me the bag. I checked it, assuming there must be a mistake. No, there were two items. I have never seen such enormous bacon rolls. I am a fan of black pudding and often order extra because the thin and burnt offering in many greasy spoons just isn't enough for me. No danger of that here - big chunky slices. Gorgeous. Sufficed to say we were still eating them at lunchtime and next time I'm in need of morning sustenance I shan't be hesitating before heading back to Ramon's! read more

Head here after a night out and the smell with hit your nostrils with avengence. You'll probably gag a little bit, if you've had a heavy night. Push through that! The food here is typical greasy spoon - sausages, friend bread, mushrooms, fried tomatoes, you know the score. But there is just so much of it! People say that it's not good to eat greasy food if you're hungover because it stops your body from effectively breaking down the alcohol. These people have clearly never been to Ramon's Cafe! Highly recommended for fans of fried breakfasts, this place is one notch up from the average greasy spoon. It's helped many, many Cardiff residents get over monstrous hangovers - mainly students, thanks to its Cathays location. It's obviously most famous amongst locals for its fine fry-ups. For those with a smaller appetite there's the 'small' version for just a few quid (which is generous enough in itself!) - right up to huge, heart-attack inducing breakfasts after which you're unlikely to eat for another day. They do other food besides breakfasts, including burgers and similar - but it's the undoubtedly the breakfasts this place is known for. Although I'm not a huge fan of fried breakfasts, I have been dragged along here a few times - and I'm giving them four stars because even *I* have to admit their breakfasts are good. This little breakfast beauty is situated in the heart of Cathays so beware this place will get mighty full. Whenever I have been in there, not only is it student filled but also working locals, which is a nice change from many of the establishments of Cathays. The breakfasts here are immense, there is nowhere around that does them quite like this. You can get them in many sizes with as many extras as you desire, I like the fact they served them with chipped potatoes. Not only does this place do gut busting fry ups but also other healthier dishes such as jacket potatoes and standard British grub, keep an eye out for the specials. Apparently this place has got a garden, I have never ventured out the back but no doubt will be needing Ramon's to fill my stomache the day after a lot of vodka soon, so shall check it out then. read more

Ramon's is a greasy spoon of the highest order. In fact I'd go as far as to say it's a bit of an institution in Cardiff. Really close to the university and the student area of Cathays it offers a no-frills approach to feeding the hungry or hungover. The main reason most people go to Ramon's is the breakfasts. With the small breakfast (egg, bacon, sausage, beans, toast, fried potato's, bread and tea or coffee) coming in at less that £3 it's an absolute steal. I've never had anything larger than a small breakfast but you can get all combinations and sizes up to a 'belly buster' which has all the trimmings. The rest of the menu is pretty extensive - burgers, sandwiches, egg and chips, omlettes (which I'm a personal fan of) and even a full roast dinner. You don't go to Ramon's for a healthy, culinary inspired lunch. Decor is simple to say the least - old lino on the floor, basic tables and chairs, fetch your own cutlery and shout out when they call your number so they bring your food over. It gets pretty busy on weekends - particularly when the rugby is on, but the tables turn over pretty quickly. There is also a 'garden' down a side passage where you can seat and eat/smoke to your hearts content. Your very cholesterol loaded heart after one of the breakfasts but then, you get what you came for! I'm rating this as a 5 for the reason that if you want a greasy spoon or a hangover cure breakfast this is the only place you should be going! read more

The breakfasts are the main staple and a must try if this is your first visit. This place is a hidden treasure of Cardiff. Ramon's isn't just somewhere for students to recover from a night out, I graduated from university nearly 3 years ago and still recommend this place after a night out, or even if I'm too lazy to cook for myself. I will recommend the 'Special Breakfast', please do not let the fact there is always a line of people queing, because the service is quick enough and the food is well worth the wait. The people are queing because of how good it is, and the fact they have had to expand the back of the cafe whithin the last few years,shows how booming the business really is. I cannot comment on the toilet area as I have never used the facilities. Staff are always friendly, food always comes out in record time and is delicious!! Top marks to the family run business, I will continue to be a happy customer, after a visit!!! read more

Hands down the best greasy spoon (and greasiest spoon) in Cardiff, Ramon's is a symphony of bacon, eggs and artery clogging goodness. The mere sight of a Special Breakfast with its proud lake of beans, rolling hills of sausage and egg, dense forest of fried potato slices and pink fields of bacon all shepherded into place with slices of fried bread still dripping with fat have cured me of more hangovers than any one drinking establishment has ever given me. On a less hyperbolic note, if you're looking for a good feed and aren't interested in any frills on your food, then Ramon's really is your best option in a big radius. You aren't going to get caramelised onion-studdeed sausages made from 95% hand reared pork, you're going to get sausages that taste alright and fill you up. It's a no-nonsense, homely sort of place, away from the pretension of the coffee shops over the road or the purple carpeted gastro pubs filling the city. It's food your mum would have cooked for you if she didn't care about your health. read more

If you're not ordering gut-busting portions of artery-clogging fry-ups at this point you're doing it wrong. The seating area is a little larger than most greasy spoons, allowing you to relax while shaking off that morning after headache. And there's even an extensive noticeboard packed with posters of local gigs, events and suchlike, so you can keep up to date and plan future socialising while you recover from the previous bout. read more

Post 11am, full English breakfast was required. Thought I'd try somewhere different and was glad I did. Food was fast, hot and excellent. The staff are constantly scurrying back and forth to the kitchen shouting out table numbers and the decor is a bit tired, but I looks clean and very busy. Definitely recommended! read more

We live just round the corner from Ramon's and, as first year students, are now so enamoured with the place that we are now looking for a second year house that has to be within walking distance of it. The staff are friendly no matter how hungover and incapable of speech you are and the breakfast menu. Well. Allow me to try and explain. The breakfast at Ramon's is simply the finest cooked breakfast that money (not very much of it at that) can buy. Between five of us we have covered pretty much every item they do, all have our set orders and are all never as happy as we are when we are perched in a corner of Ramon's guzzling merrily on a fatty plate of wonder. Even our resident veggie loves it - something I didn't think was possible with regards to a greasy spoon. Ok so I'm not the most descriptive of people. Let me just say this. Ramon's isn't the prettiest place, it isn't the classiest place, it isn't even the cleanest place. Despite all of this it deserves the five stars I'm giving it and more. Haven't been for ages but it was a firm favourite with my Cardiff University student friends. We went for the cooked breakfasts and weren't disappointed - none of us were brave enough to go for the legendary belly buster but we were fell fed with the smaller portion sizes on offer. Veggie option was good and the meat eaters didn't complain. Parking can be a bit tricky but a lot of the cafés we've been to in Cardiff are in the centre and so it's a common problem.
