After seeing the reviews, I wasn't sure what to expect. I decided to eat here with my husband and my parents. We arrived around lunch time on a Sunday. It was very busy. There was one table open and one opening up. The open table was right next to the kitchen and was pretty noisy. We asked for the other one, that hadn't been bussed, and they gladly cleaned it so we could sit there. I know diners aren't fine dining establishments, but I never understood putting a booth right next to the kitchen entrance with all the noise, the doors swinging constantly, trays being carried over your head if you're in the booth backing up to the entrance . . . Anyway. I was pleasantly surprised. Service wasn't super fast at first because our server had several tables all checking out at the same time. Once the whirlwind was over, we ordered, got our drinks, and had food on the table quickly. My parents both ordered a breakfast special with eggs, home fries, bacon, toast, etc. I was amazed at the amount of bacon included. Too often, you order something like that at a restaurant and they bring out two skinny, flaccid pieces of bacon. Their plates had at lease 3 big slices of perfectly cooked bacon. My husband ordered the French dip and he said the au jus was excellent. I ordered the crab cake. That's usually a good measure of a diner if they can do that well. The side salad with their house made Greek salad dressing was fresh and crisp. The dressing was fabulous. The vegetable that day was Harvard beets. I'm not a huge fan of beets, but for what they were there were well done. My broiled crab cake was excellent. I didn't see any artificial "krab" garbage in it. It wasn't full of bread. It wasn't mushy from too much binder like mayo. It was lightly seasoned so it tasted of crab, not coverup. It was perfectly broiled - crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. It was on a hot metal plate so it stayed hot an crispy until the end. I had coffee with my meal and it was refilled frequently enough and had a good flavor. I went in with my friends Monday evening around 10pm and the server was nice but not attentive we saw her maybe 3 times I got the marinated chicken club and am eating it when I notice that there is a lot of dark pink sections. I am including a picture of what the chicken looked like below. I called today in the am asking to speak to a manager just to let them know what was going on and when I asked the girl on the other end was like who this and that they weren't there and to try moonlight diner. WBD is without a doubt the absolute worst place to eat in the Carlisle area (they are on the same level or worse than the Newville Diner). I have always given them another chance after the first 5 visits there but never again. The Eisenhower Diner in Hanover is associated with the WBD in Carlisle but the difference between them is like night & day. The ED is worth the drive to Hanover. The accompanying house salad was non-noteworthy and the lasagna itself was according to her very dry like it had been sitting under a heat lamp or left in the oven way too long. I got the chicken parm. The accompanying chicken noodle soup was served dutch style with egg noodles but sadly was super bland. No seasoning-No flavor-No nothing. The chicken parm itself was a good size but the red sauce they use is very, very acidic and harsh to the point of being very difficult to eat. I was hitting the TUMS as soon as I got home as the acid reflux was already in full swing. While the location is super easy to get to right off the highway and the service overall was good enough, the food simply stunk. There's nothing fancy or flashy but the food is good, with big portions, the floors and tables are kept clean, the staff is quick and efficient and the prices are low. I've been here a few times and have never been disappointed. I always get breakfast so I don't have have anything to say about lunch, dinner or dessert. The western omelette with cheese is something like 5.50 and comes with home fries and toast which is plenty enough to eat. I didn't know if I'd finish everything. The other night we decided we wante "real" food (as opposed to mass produced wrapped-in-paper fast food) and didn't want to cook and clean up, relatives have eaten at this diner and liked it so we gave it a try. I love French Onion Soup so that was a no-brainer: It was pretty good, I'd say a 3 out of 5, but I've had better. I'd cut the onions smaller so they are easier to get on the spoon and into the mouth, use a LOT less salt, and replace the always rubbery mozzarella with Fontina or Gruyere. I also got chopped sirloin with onions and gravy; pretty good, huge and couldn't eat it all. Lots of onions and gravy. I passed on the boring corn or overcooked green beans, and got coleslaw - it was just ok, finely chopped with a sweet dressing, tasted like it probably was made elsewhere and delivered in 5 gallon buckets. My dinner companion always gets meatloaf; I think he's going to write a book of reviews of Central PA meatloaves. He got a huge serving, with two thick dense slabs. No green peppers thank goodness. Brown gravy and parsley on top, but no evidence of any onions or herbs in the meatloaf itself. I would guess just bread crumbs, egg, and s&p. He had enough to bring one slab home. The mashed potatoes were kind of dense, nothing to write home about. He also got Pepper Pot soup - I tried a spoonful and i wasn't a fan; it seemed like leftover ground beef with leftover gravy and a ton of chopped bell pepper. He ate it; I don't know if he liked it. Service was excellent, friendly and efficient. We got what we were looking for: Real food, without the work. We didn't get nor did we expect something super-delicious and memorable; it was decent to pretty good. We will probably go back, and next time I'm thinking of a salad with grilled chicken, or perhaps grilled or baked fish. The desserts looked wonderful, but the indulgence was a no for us.
