1 review 1.0 star rating 4/12/2016…read moreMy name is James and I am a retired Navy Cryptologists.... I've enjoyed over a year of service from Dr. Volkman at the Orthapedic group pc , however a week ago I called the nurse to refill a prescription the same way I've done every month since Ive been seeing hin, she then told me that I had to make and appointment to see the Dr. Before she refilled it again. I explained that that was fine, but she should have advised me of that at the last refill.....before my prescription was due to run out.....I live 180 miles round trip to their office so I asked could she simply make an appointment then give me enough meds until my appointment...She gave me an appointment for the following monday at 9:35 AM but then gave me a quick and rude NO on the meds....then she told me to hold on and then put someone else on the phone who immediately started raising their voice yelling about how it was my fault that she didn't advise me beforehand that ai had to see the Dr. Before my meds could be renewed (maybe you can understand why that is..I crrtainly dont)....So I did what most of you would do....Hang Up.... The following Monday, I drove the long drive to my appointment made by the nurse....When I arrived, the receptionist said that I didn't have an appointment. ...That's right readers...she cancelled my appointment and did not advise me of it, in order to punish me by making me drive 180 miles round trip for nothing..... OK... So when I tried to schedule another appoinment, the HR lady came out and said that I couldn't schedule another appointment and that I would receive a letter...The letter arrived a day ago and the letter, signed by Dr. Volkman, said "I will no longer provide medical services to you due to your inappropriate behavior towards my staff"...If you're still reading this, yes...this actually happened... My question...what kind of petty hateful people calling themselves professionals, just out of spite would allow you to drive such a distance knowing that they cancelled your appointment ???.....And what kind of medical "professionals" would deny you much needed medical services and vital meds because someone in his staff says that their feelings are hurt...??? As an African American here in Alabama,, I am used to seeing this kind of assumed "priveledge" where a person of color is looked at as though he is not entitled to the same services or respect as others and anytime he says something they dont like, he is severly punished or the police are called to take the scary minority away ....(which is how I felt when I showed up for my appointment at the Orthapedic group pc office) ....but I did not expect it here.....I actually thought that people in the Orthapedic Group PC were strong adults that are there to help when you need it...that would not be childish or petty and are unlike the rest of pre-civil rights Alabana... Maybe, I was wrong.... Visit at your own risk....

The Orthopedic Group, Fairhope, Alabama The following chain…read moreof events that follows is from personal experience I had visited this group of orthopedic doctors on one other occasion. My experience had been good in that my appointment was kept on time and I was in and out in a timely manor. My second visit was at the recommendation of my regular orthopedic doctor. Again, I was in and out in a timely manor. From there, all seems to have gone down hill. I was scheduled for surgery on my left thumb on March 21 2019 at 1:00 pm. I was given written instructions to follow prior to surgery. According to the instructions I was to have nothing to eat or drink after 12 am on Wednesday night. I was to be at the out-patient facility at 11:30 on Thursday morning. All of these things were followed, even though industry standards suggest that there should be no food or drink only 6 hours prior to surgery. When I arrived at 11:30 there were 2 other patients already there and a 4th came in shortly after. At approximately 2:00 pm a nurse came to the door and called the third person back to be prepped. She told me it would not be much longer. When I was finally taken back for surgery prep, I ask the nurse why we were all there at the same time. I was told that it was just in case someone didn't show up. I specifically ask here if that meant that the doctors time was valuable and our time as patients wasn't. Her reply was, that pretty much sums it up!!! I finally went in for the procedure at approximately 3:30 and was I was back in the room in about an hour. The doctor did come by and tell me that the procedure was a little more extensive than he thought it was going to be and that was the reason it took a little longer than he thought. I left the facility to go home with a prescription for pain meds in hand a little before 5 pm. I arrived the the drug store to fill prescriptions, to be informed that the doctor failed to sign the prescription. This was a prescription with narcotics, so his signature was REQUIRED! I call his office only to get the on call nurse who called him and came back on the phone with me to tell me there was nothing she could do but to phone something else, but it would not be as strong. (As it ended up, the phoned in prescription was only about half as effective as the original would have been). Lets recap so far...No food or drink for 15 hours and 30 minutes prior to surgery, note the 6 hour industry standard, and arrive 4 hours prior to surgery,(for doctors convenience). I was sent home with a prescription that I could not have filled, not even a phone call from the doctor with an apology, nor any offer to call one of his colleagues in the local area to have them write a prescription for adequate pain relief. All this combined shows little of no compassion or concerns for his patients well being. I guess his attitude was that since he was not the one in pain, it really didn't matter. I went for a follow up visit today, 4/4/19. Stitches removed and all seem fine, however even after a week, there was no apology for failing to sign the prescription from the week before. Which just reinforces my theory about no compassion for his patient. I would think long and hard before going back to The Orthopedic Group for any procedure.
