a neon sign on the side of a building

Nice clean historic Walgreens on Canal Street. Walgreen Drug Company of Chicago opened their first store in New Orleans at this location on Canal Street in 1938. It was the first new construction on Canal Street since the Saenger Theater, another historic landmark, was built in 1927. They secured a 50-year lease, which was extended to 60 years, for this prime location. Love the Art Deco Streamline Modern design with the curved corner frontage. At the time, it housed a 100-foot-long soda counter, a second-floor mezzanine restaurant and a pharmacy. The original Walgreens on Canal was expanded after the original lease expired. The Art Deco design was maintained, and the original neon sign was restored. The renovation and restoration had a $5 million price tags. Nice to be able to get a glance from the past at the first Walgreens to be built in New Orleans.

    Old school Walgreens! - VN

This Walgreens was located across the street from our hotel, The Ritz Carlton New Orleans on Canal Street. My spouse said it's one of their older locations which was apparent due to the old school rainbow logo & font in bright neon lights perched above the entrance. We popped in to get some drinks and snacks to take back to the room. Selection was good, like any other location I've been to, and prices were competitive. SERVICE: The female cashier we had was either mute or just an unhappy soul. Of course we didn't receive a greeting but my spouse did one for her in which we got no response. Tsk, tsk, tsk. Can't you even say "hi"? No price was mentioned so you had to look at her register screen. And of course no thank you was received either. She should find employment behind the scenes where she doesn't have to deal with humans. Three simple rules, honey. 1) Greet. 2) Be pleasant. 3) Thank. TIP: Closes at midnight. OVERALL: All around convenience.

If I wasn't from Chicago and knew that Walgreens was based out of Deerfield, Illinois, I would think this was the Flagship store. And that it hasn't been changed since 1957! (see pics) I mean, surely this Walgreens was a Woolworth's previously. Can you smell that old Walgreens' smell of roach spray and cheap cosmetics? The new stores don't have it anymore, but surely it resides here as a monument to Walgreens past. If I wasn't afraid of getting run over by a New Orleans' street car, I would've bowed down in the middle of Canal. We're not worthy! "Woolworthy!"

" Dirty & Messy " We went to New Orleans and needed to stop at the Walgreens to pick up some items. The store looks very nice from the outside of the building. But when you walk into the store it smells, it's dirty, and a lot of the isles the day we were there were very messy. I kept thinking the entire time I was in the store that " Does the Corporate Offices Know About This ". Not a good representation of a Walgreens. Oh and it took forever to get check out.

The woman said either register could help me and to place the box on the counter at the other register.; the attendant at the other register was about 5 feet away and hear d the interaction. I did as I was instructed. The woman at the second counter was tidying and dilly-dallying, totally ignoring me. When I finally commented she rudely asked if I were speaking to her and said, "if you want help from be you gotta ask for it; you can't be standing there thinking I will help you if you don't ask me." I said your coworker just asked me to come to this register. She repeated her rude little you gotta ask tirade and continued to do other things, at which point I walked out. Abominable, and not the first time I hae been treated rudely at this store. I will drive 15 miles out of my way to avoid that store.

I have signed up for monthly automatic refills numerous times, and it never works. I have to call to refill, and lately the refills cannot be made in time, so I run out of medication. The automated system is garbage, and when I opt to attempt to speak with a pharmacist, I am put on hold for a half an hour or more, and hang up. No one has ever answered the phone. Nothing against the people who work there, but it's a really bad store in terms of functionality. The rest of the store is a typical Walgreens.

My food was hot n ready within 10 minutes. What I got: crawfish pie (10/5) -- $2.99 for this masterpiece. it is basically crawfish etouffee mixed with some rice stuffed into pie dough. savory, got a nice kick of heat, and love how pronounced the bell pepper flavor is shrimp po boy (10/5) -- everything is just so balanced and went down like nothing because it is so effortlessly addictive. Shrimp are seasoned and fried perfectly. came out to ~$10 and the 6" is HUGE, also easily customizable chicken sausage gumbo (5/5) -- literally feels/tastes like it is made with love. perfectly seasoned, hearty, savory, nice chunks of smoked sausage, good portion of rice It will be on my list to return to whenever I come to New Orleans.

Hidden gem ALERT!!!!!…read more I explored the French Quarter for more authentic eats, and escaped Burbon St...mission complete. New Orleans version of a NY bodega is where I found one of the best and most adorable shrimp po'boys. You'll have to put these directions into your phone, because the location is in the depths of the neighborhood district. It's walkable to and from the popular Canal Street, just much quieter and secluded. You won't be able to park on this particular street, but near by areas would allow for street parking. This is in fact a grocery store with a hot food market setup in the back. I was pleasantly greeted immediately as I entered by a gentleman stocking, and a nice lady behind the register. I immediately darted to the back of the store and saw the setup, simple with a bit of updated technology. You can order and pay at a tablet style screen, and wait for the magic to be made on the other side. It took about 5 minutes and I got a text my order was ready, the same gentleman who was stocking called out my name from the back and handed me a 12 inch shrimp po'boy for 12.00. This sandwich was incredible, loaded with crispy fried shrimp and fresh lettuce. The bun was soft and very fresh, I added extra pickles for an acidic flavor breakup to the fried fish and dough. The flavors were on point, very seasoned and perfectly cooked shrimp. I was very impressed by the price and quality....not to mention customer service. Pro Tip: My van driver mentioned to me before dropping me off at the hotel, a lot of people walk Burbon Street and turn around when it becomes residential. But there is actually a ton of life and experiences to be had off the beaten path, both local and authentic.

During the first week of January, my lifelong friend visited Plush Appeal to purchase Mardi Gras decor for her out of state home. We are natives of New Orleans and were raised with the proper etiquette and respect for ourselves, others and community. We are proud graduates of an affluent Catholic high school and our class of women has made quite a positive impact in this world collectively. With that said, as my friend was shopping she interacted with one of the sales associates and had a lovely conversation. This particular sales associate then left the area. Within minutes two other sales associates approached my friend, accused her of stealing, and when my friend attempted to clear her name and prove her innocence, these women refused. They stated she was on camera and despite my friend asking multiple times for proof and to view the cameras, she was again refused her request. Apparently, two large men were then instructed to escort her out to which she stated she felt extremely uncomfortable. Several of her friends have reached out to the store. Ms. Vee was so nice! CeeCee though ... the manager... when I called to ask for clarification she became nasty and hung up. Long story short, nothing was stolen. If that were the case why not call the police or show the video? Most importantly to note are the differences in skin tones. My friend is an upper class African American female who was seemingly targeted for the color of her skin. Take your business elsewhere!
