So happy to return again for dinner at my favorite German restaurant in the Twin Cities on our wedding anniversary. Apparently, I am not the only avid fan because there are other even more hardcore ones sitting outside on their patio in freezing temperature eating and drinking beer. Their beer is so malty and pack full of flavor! Can't go wrong with any beer you order. I always order my usual - the spaetzle, sausage and their buns. I was very sad that they changed their French buns though with the pretzel ones, even the server agreed that lots of their customers came looking for them. The spaetzle was still prepared so creamy and cheesy like a heartwarming Mac and cheese German version. It was so delicious. The currywurst sausage was my favorite. The parking was a challenge to find on a Sat early afternoon. The host was rude when we didn't want to sit upstairs with a mounted Bison and an old stale smell. Very over rated for the service and lack of friendliness we received. Micheal S is the worst server I've ever experienced. Wow! I hope you are much more careful in the future in how you care for your customer now that I have called you out. We had to change tables three times once we asked to sit downstairs. When I asked a question and complained I was told to leave the restaurant I haven't been treated that poorly in any establishment- Having a bad day- please don't take it out on your customers who are trying to enjoy their Sat afternoon. Disappointed. We're visiting MN and we were craving german food and decided to check it out after seeing the reviews but what a mistake! Overpriced and disappointing. We lived in Germany for several years and we never saw chicken schnitzel (is pork!) and way too tick to be called schnitzel. The pretzel was good but too expensive. ($18!!!). We just feel that $100 for a pretzel, and two breaded chicken breasts is way too much. Just don't go. read more

The ambiance was fantastic on a subzero night! I felt like I went on a vacation somewhere out East. The winter salad was great, but I should've got a protein on it. I did order the Ploughmann's platter but I wasn't a fan of the sliced meat. It was too thick for my liking, but the cheeses were great and accoutrements with the pretzel. For a German restaurant/pub I gave the restaurant a 4 star rating. Not a drinker, so did not sample the beer. Pretty simple menu, not up to date. Wuerst/ sausage were of 3 varieties. Mmmmm, Waldmann was sooo good! I really enjoyed my time there and would love to go back. The staff was friendly and we were seated right away outside. I loved the biergarten - it's a cute spot on Smith Ave with long picnic tables and umbrellas on top of loose gravel so it wasn't super buggy like grass can be. Perfect for a summer night. It did remind me of Germany, the way we shared a long table with another group. We both ordered sausage platters with 2 sides each. We got the warm bacon kraut, cold potato salad, frankfurter, brat, and I ordered some house-made pickles. We also started with a soft pretzel. All very good and it felt very authentic! Even their mustard and curry ketchup was done right. I've only been to Germany once but this felt like the real deal. Highly recommend, and I didn't even try a beer! read more

Waldmann is as authentic a German experience as you're going to get in St. Paul. The menu's a touch spendy for my taste, but everything I've gotten has been killer (don't miss out on the soft pretzel). More commonly, my husband and I go over for a beer on their patio (one of St. Paul's best ones!), though their inside space is worth the trip alone, especially in the cold winter months. Their Pilsner is the best I've had in the cities. You may have to pick up a crowler of it to go! read more

I convinced Paul to sell his stone ground mustard to me for fifty cents. That improved the meal by four dollars. I just looked up spaetzle. Gravies, sauces and melted butter are often included. My friend had made reservations for the Oktoberfest celebrations and I happened to be in town. I was excited to be able to celebrate Oktoberfest this year as most other celebrations around the world had been cancelled. Waldmann had the perfect set up. The greeted us before we checked in to check our IDs. After we checked in, they seated us at the end of a picnic table adorned in the blue and white checked table cloth. Tables practiced social distance and the dining situation was outdoor only. There was some live music as well as a yodeling contest. They had their beer menu and a special Oktoberfest food menu. The food menu contained many of the items you'd see at Hofbrau Haus. Oh the memories. The set up was great. The weather was beautiful. The staff was awesome and the service was very good. It's a great space for a relaxed Oktoberfest celebration. The food and drink: Lemon Radler - delicious, so delicious and refreshing Grapefruit Radler - good as well, but has a bit of a bitter aftertaste since they use grapefruit puree Oktoberfest - delicious, surprisingly lighter than expected Kasespatezl - cheesy potato dumplings...mac and cheese style, so good TLDR: in general, Waldmann is awesome, but you should definitely check them out during Oktoberfest if you get a chance. read more

What an incredible wonderful place. I took my husband here recently for our anniversary and we had a marvelous time. The food was absolutely delicious! We shared a pretzel appetizer - I haven't had a pretzel That good since my last trip to Germany. I also enjoyed a Currywurst and red cabbage both of which were very good. My husband enjoyed the schnitzel. In addition I tried a house crafted soda which was cool, refreshing, and delicious. Visited this brewery based on a recommendation from one of the locals and I'm glad he mentioned it! I visited this place with some friends on my last night in town. One of the better German themed breweries that I've visited. The pretzel and strudel were amazing and the beer was good too. They also had live music on Tuesday night which was delightful. What a fabulously authentic feeling German brewery! And what a beautiful restoration of the oldest surviving building in St. Paul! The pine floors, antique décor, and clean bright interior are all just perfect. I've spent a fair amount of time in little German beer saloons and this was very reminiscent of some places in Bamberg and Bavaria. My date and I were first seated upstairs in the Bison room in the back which felt a little uncomfortably quiet and remote. It would have been great if we were in the mood for a romantic private meal. But not the case for us on a Saturday afternoon for just some fun conversation and beer. We moved downstairs to sit at the bar, which felt much better. With only 4 barstools and right inside the door, I personally loved the cozy feel of it and being in the heart of everyone coming in and out. The beer itself was also tasty. I had the Berliner sour wheat and my date enjoyed his lager. Again, it tasted and was served very authentically German. I'll absolutely be back. Prost! read more

Big fan of Waldmann. It's in a great location, although parking is a tad (okay, significantly more than a tad) limited. I love a good dunkel, so I haven't tried many of their other beers, but my partner really enjoys IPA's and he's allowed us to go back, even suggested it, which is rare. The spätzel, pretzel and bratwurst brought us back to Frankfurt. Grateful for the expansive outdoor space, heaters and fire pits in the winter and ample seating. We will be back - but probably Lyft or carpool. read more

It's not often that I can say I go for Bavarian cuisine - I generally think that it can lack in flavor at times, but I have to say, man is it good comfort food! Sometimes you overload your life with spice and you want to dial it back with some classics to reset your palate. This is how I think of Waldmann. I really liked the Frankfurter that I ordered as part of my Wurst plate combo (the boyfriend and I would have done the shareable plank, but we couldn't agree on what we wanted) and added the mashed potatoes and the spaetzle as my sides. All of this was tasty, though I did add a bunch of pepper to give it a bit more oomph (I said reset my palate, not go bland) and it was tasty. The potatoes were just the way I like them - not overly blended, with hints of chunks of actual potato still in them. I also ordered the Roggenbier, which, dang!! You know how people say it has hints of this or that in the beer, and when it comes out you can't taste it? Well, I could totally taste the banana in this, and I'm hooked. To top us off, we had the seasonal strudel, which was a berry blend. What a delightful treat! The staff were pretty great, though at times the stretches we saw our server were a bit long (I was thirsty and was downing water). Be warned of the parking situation - Smith Avenue is a bit packed in that area and you might be circling side streets. read more

We stopped by Waldmann for a couple of brews and a snack after a day at the dog park, and we were so delightfully pleased! We had our pup with us and it was a beautiful day, we sat out on the patio. The building itself looks like an adorable home that was built in like the 1800s or something (I don't know if this is true - it's the vibe I got.) There are several picnic tables with umbrellas for good sun coverage and cutesy string lights. While we were there we got to see the tail end of a folksy couple jamming out, and while we were preparing to leave they turned over to a couple of violin players - all pleasant, not at all too loud. The service was great, at a good pace, and friendly. The beers were tasty and we ordered the pretzel with 5 mustards (the blueberry mustard was actually surprisingly divine) and the beer cheese. I am not a fan of this place. 1. Service: slow and weirdly indifferent. 2. Food: Didn't enjoy the food Small portion, not hot enough. Maybe I am just not into wursts etc. 3. Entertainment This place is like a little house and converted into an eatery. You cannot possibly hear or see the band from upstairs. Just 3-4 tables can see the band even downstairs. 4. Parking You could park nearby free street parking. Their lot is always full. I won't come here for dates, not romantic and just indifferent. Expected a bigger, 'shinier' pretzel with better dipping options. - The meat/cheese plate was best. - I wanted the currywurst I ordered to include the curry sauce that you get with it in Germany. - The Mac & cheese was more 'starchy' than 'cheesy'. One day I decided to take my 82 year old mom to Waldmann's for lunch. My family has German roots and we love trying traditional dishes. Upon arriving we both noticed many older patrons that came for the same reason. We ordered the multiple sausages and Spaetzle to share. Both were fantastic but smile on my moms face was truly the best part of the meal. The location, energy, and beer here are awesome. The food was very just ok and super overpriced for what you get. As a person who is sensitive to processed meats, gluten, and dairy-I'll admit this isn't the best place to go for dinner. However, I scouted the menu and called ahead to make sure there were some good options since my parents had invited us here to eat with them. The nice woman on the phone assured me the salads were great and gluten free, so I felt confident that I would still be able to come and enjoy a good meal with my family. Everyone got beer/homemade soda to start. When it came time to order food, I asked the waiter how big the salad was, and he assured me it was "dinner sized". To me, this means there are many elements to the salad that would make it more of a "meal" vs a side salad. When it came, I was really surprised and disappointed. Not only was it NOT dinner sized (think side salad sized)but it was also supremely simple. It appeared the only ingredients were one type of lettuce and pickled beets. $14 felt EXTREMELY overpriced for what I got. Laughable. Overall it was still a great time-and we will definitely be back. The food arrived fast and was beautiful. I'm not the biggest brat fan but these were by far the best I've ever had. They weren't overpowered with spices but were complimented by them and well balanced. Every bite was full of flavor and succulent. As we ate the sounds of laughter and accordion wafted up the stairs added to our enjoyment. The beer, housemade and incredibly delicious, added to the rich flavors of the dish. I'm conflicted as to keeping this place a secret and sharing it with the world. Ultimately, I decided it's too good to be selfish about. Their outdoor seating was also very nice and allowed for a socially distanced experience on a beautiful fall day. However, the service left me wanting. The waitresses all seemed to be speaking in some sort of theatre sing-song voice that seemed over the top and took away from the entire experience.
