I am a cancer patient and my oncologist ordered a STAT abdominal ultrasound. I went to the Apex Health Plex with some misgivings after an awful experience with their ED department concerning my son. Anyway. The sonographer was so wonderful and I was seen before my appointment time. However, it is now 3.5 hours later, my doctor's office is closed and I still have no results. They will be hearing from me in the morning, assuming I make it that long. If the delay in care causes any adverse effects to my treatment, they will be hearing from my lawyer read more

This place is a disaster. I could write like five paragraphs about why but I don't have the energy, after eight hours I still have an IV on me. Trust me it is, just it's a total mess, and the worst medical experience I've ever had. I'll save you the details, I felt like it was some sort of like mismanaged junior college training course. I felt like they just wanted to keep me there as long as possible so that they can check things off of their list, like it was an assignment. absolutely nightmare the place I wouldn't even take like my pet guinea pig in that hell hole. . The fact that this hospital isn't considered a 5 by everyone really speaks to how blind people are to their privilege. Try going to a hospital anywhere outside of the Raleigh/Durham/Cary area and then come back to me. The staff here is amazing. It's exceptionally clean. They have modern equipment.. didn't have to leave the room to get the xray. No metal detectors. The one my dad was in, Duplin General, was filthy and the nurses are rude. The doctors are clueless. On a Saturday evening I started having chest pains and nausea! Our first thought was maybe a heart attack so we did the dumb thing and my wife drove me to the WakeMed apex emergency room which was about 7 mins from our home. By the time we got there things were progressing in the wrong way and we entered the foyer and the lady on duty immediately went into action and had multiple nurses out with a wheel chair and rapidly took me back to a room. Within 10 mins the doctor on duty had an ekg reading and was injecting blood thinners into me and giving me baby aspirin. Less than 5 mins later they had me on a bus and sent me to their trauma center at the New Bern avenue location! Within 20mins the cardiologist on duty had stinted me and all pain and nausea was gone! All in all in less than 1.5 hours the incredible response and support I received from the emergency room, transport team and the trauma center had saved my life. Thank you to the doctors and nurses for their incredible professionalism. read more

Great experience. My wife and I took her 95 year old aunt because of a fall. They took her immediately. Treated her so gently. Had to put 10 stitches and 11 staples in her forehead and head. CT scan was negative. This is a great facility both staff and the facility itself (CT capability). This is my second experience there. Several years ago, my wife took me due to strange symptoms of the left side of my face not "working properly". They eliminated a stroke and the diagnosis was Bells Palsy. Would suggest this facility to anyone. They are open 24-7. So many urgent care facilities are 8 to 5 only. Not much good in an emergency after 5PM. read more

This is the WORST emergency room I have ever visited. as someone with chronic bronchitis I have had to go to the ER multiple times and I have never in my life been told to wait HOURS when my oxygen level is past the hospitalization limit. Then when I asked them to double check my emergency contact in case I pass out in the lobby they acted annoyed and got an attitude with me. My son was spiking 105.7 temperature and of course I was freaking out we got in the car and drove to the closet ER. On the way there and the cold got his temp down to 100... They were excellent with my little one talking to him and making him feel comfortable at 6 years old, we had Doctor Jay. He was a younger man and absolutely fantastic with my son, they did a strep and flu test ended up being the Flu B. They let him pick out a gift and gave him lots of sponge bob stickers. I was very happy with my experience. We got in right away. read more

The reason I'm giving this Emergency Room a 2/5 is because of the nice woman who checked me in as well as one nurse who took my vitals, lab work, EKG. I came in on Friday, 7-19-19 with excruciating chest pain that had continued from the night prior. They did get me back quickly simply because no one was there (I appreciated that). My vitals were taken, blood was drawn, EKG, and an X-ray. I was asked for a urine sample which was never processed. They threw it away at the end of my visit. The doctor came in and was very dismissive. The only thing he did was ask a question as to my visit and while I was in the middle of speaking, he just seemed very uninterested and just said okay I'm going to run these tests and we'll come back in and let you know what's going on. At that moment, my only concern was my health. So I continued to stay. Maybe 20 minutes after the doctor exited my room, a nurse came in with some medication. I personally don't take medication unless it is needed. She said it was a medication to numb my throat and to drink it and I was good to go. I was in disbelief. I asked if the doctor was going to talk to me, she simply said NOPE, you're good to go. I was shocked. I just moved to Apex, NC and was not used to poor quality care from a doctor. I was appalled that he didn't bother to come speak to me, explain my labs (which he never went over with me), nor my X-ray. I simply picked up my things and left. I would not recommend this facility to anyone in a dire emergency. Maybe I came into contact with a doctor who had poor quality care but no one should have to feel like they're leaving the emergency room/doctors with no answers. read more

I'm actually pretty shocked at the other reviews based on our experience last night. We arrived around 9pm after my 2 year old had an accident. We knew something was wrong with her arm - but no clue what. They checked us in quickly and the waiting room was fairly empty - only 3 people ahead of us (which is why we went to Apex instead of Cary or Rex. Didn't want to wait forever with a little one). The TV in the waiting room was broken so that was a bummer but we only had to wait about 15 minutes before we were brought back. The ER rooms are probably the biggest I've seen. They actually have doors to them and not just a curtain. They also have TV's in the room to keep you occupied. It was like an actual hospital room not just an ER room. My parents came to bring us some reinforcements (food/toys) because we weren't expecting an ER trip and all 5 of us were easily comfortable in the room. The doctors and nurses were all very sweet. All very nice to my daughter who was obviously in pain. They all commented on how cute her shoes were trying to make her feel at ease. We didn't just feel like a number they were trying to push through. The doctor came in and explained that it was a nursemaids elbow which is pretty common for kids her age and the type of injury we were describing. He reduced it in the room in about 15 seconds and she was immediately better. He gave her some time to make sure she was fine. He then showed me and my husband how to reduce it by ourselves in case it were to happen again. What???? A doctor showing me how to avoid another ER bill in the future. Sign me up!!! They gave us follow up care and we were done. From the time we checked in to the time we left was only about 1.5 hours which I think is PHENOMENAL for a Saturday evening. For our first ER visit with our daughter, it was really the best experience. read more

I went to the ER at WakeMed, Apex and had the best experience. I signed in and within a few minutes was taken in for vitals and info. The doctor came within 5 minutes, ordered x-rays and medications were dispensed to ease discomfort within 10-15 minutes. Nurses brought me warm blankets twice. I felt 100% better and left within an hour. 5 full stars for efficiency, professional care, and kudos to the knowledgeable and kind nurses. read more

Doctors Macpherson and Solomon are awesome!!! I moved from Illinois to NorthCarolina at the end of March and they took over my care. Both are very personable and caring. Doctor Macpherson is very common sense and realistic. He knows how much the healing is more than just drugs and procedures. He has a solid knowledge base when it comes to food, health, and mind to maintain and cure the body. Doctor Solomon is a not the typical specialist who believes he is above God. Yes, I met one of those when I had my triple bypass in late May. Overall these two receive A+++ grades from this "young" retired teacher. read more

Nothing good ever brings us here and maybe it is a bad thing that we were recognized by the nurse this evening, but as far an ER visits go these are the easiest we have ever had. WORST EXPERIENCE!!!! My boyfriend had an accident at work and hurt his eye so I took him to the emergency room in Apex wake med. When we got there everyone was just sitting around doing nothing. When the nurse came to get him not once did they ask what is your date of birth or really what happened regarding his injuries. We waited over two hours for a physician to come and check him which was ridiculous because he made him stand up and say read this which was letters on the wall and that was it and walked away. We wait another two hours until another physician came in and said sorry for the wait but It's really busy tonight. With frustration and irritation I got up and I told the nurse we are leaving. The nurse said OK I went to get someone. A different nurse came in and said there's only one physician working and there are a lot of sick people tonight. So, I guess my boyfriend was not really sick he had an injury so he had to wait longe???? We got to the hospital at around 11:00 AM and by the time we were seen and checked it was close to 4:30 PM. He then had a CAT scan done which took another hour. When we asked if the results are in the physician said yeah and have been back about 10 minutes ago and they are normal. This was the worst experience, we felt no comfort, no warmth, and it was like they didn't care at all. Do yourself a favor go to Duke !!!! At least they check double identifier each and every time. read more

Had a horrible experience here. I took a bad fall in July and was extreme pain which resulted in me going to urgent care. They took some X rays and saw that I had two fractured ribs and a potentially punctured lung, so they sent me straight to the ER for a CT to make sure my lung was ok. Got to the ER, the nurses and doctors didn't even look at the report the urgent care doctor had sent with me. They took three X rays as opposed to urgent care which took 5 or 6 to check out all the angles. They did not even mention a CT scan like I had said the doctor had recommended. Told me I didn't have any fractures and sent me on my way. The entire process was very rushed and ER Doctor didn't even ask me any questions about my fall or about the pain I was experiencing. I saw him for maybe 3 minutes max. The next day I was still in severe pain despite the pain meds they gave me (5/325mg hydrocodone/acetaminophen which did not help at all), so I went to a different ER. What do you know, fractured ribs 3/4 and a pneumothorax (punctured lung), which could have caused my lung to collapse. Definitely will not go back to the Apex location, other wake meds have been great, but not this one. read more

AVOID, AVOID, AVOID. If I could give this place a zero, I certainly would. I went in 3 weeks ago with severe pain on my back and nausea. I rated the pain a 10 out of 10, which I had never done even after having had three children ( one without an epidural or any pain medication) I have also have had 2 back surgeries and managed the pain after I got home from the hospital with only Tylenol. I explained to the Dr. that I was very familiar with back problems due to my history and that these symptoms were totally different. I told the Dr. that I suspected that I had a kidney stone or appendix. The Dr. was slow at giving me something for the pain, but after about 1 hour, I was given what must have been a very small amount of Morphine since it did almost nothing for my pain. The Dr. did a urine test and ruled out the kidney stone and appendix. Keep in mind that not all kidney stones result in blood in the urine. No further tests were done, not even a blood test. They diagnosed me with muscle spasms and I was literary kicked out of the hospital shortly after, against my will, still in agonizing pain and without any prescription for a pain medication. I started vomiting on my way home and continued throughout that day. After being in agonizing pain for 4 full days at home, I passed a kidney stone. The symptoms improved rapidly after that, although I had a mild pain on my front side for about a week. My back is totally fine by the way. Absolute incompetence and negligence. read more

I have been to this hospital several times and what most people do not realize is that it is just an emergency room. Here are the pros and cons. PROS- *Quick to be taken to the back. I have been to Cary Wake Med, and Raleigh for an emergency and have waited to be seen for hours. When my son was two he fell down the stairs and when I took him to Western Wake (Cary) we sat there for over five hours....HE HAD A HEAD INJURY!!!!! The longest I have ever had to wait in Apex is a few minutes at most. *The place is new and updated *You can be seen my a doctor fairly quick as well. My son had an allergic reaction and we took him in and were seen and back home within an hour. *They have the equipment such as X-ray machines *The facility is beautiful. *The rooms are spacious CONS- *If there is something wrong with you they do not allow you to be kept over night. I went in for something and ended up being taken to Cary Wake Med. They would not let us drive and forced us to pay for the ambulance. *The billing department can be a bit rude. When took my son in for the allergic reaction I ran out of the house and forgot my wallet. Luckily I had an extra insurance card in the car, but they were requiring that I pay $100 before I left the hospital. I did not have any money with me. I offered to give them my credit card number, but they said they have to see the card (I understand that I could have given them any number). I then asked if they could just bill me for the whole thing. She was not happy with this at all. They did end up billing me. The bill was crazy! For the hour that we were there they charged us $365 for the visit, $100 for the medicine, and $50 for having to bill me (this is all after insurance). I know that my son was having an allergic reaction, but if it had been a weekday and I would have taken him to our doctor we would have paid $25 for a copay. If it is a weekend or a night and you have an emergency such as a bad burn or broken bone go to this hospital. If you have something more serious and you may have to stay over night either go to Cary and wait or prepare to pay for an ambulance ride. read more

Super disappointed with the way my husband was treated when calling to follow up on his blood work results. Receptionist was very condescending and told him that if he had actually read his paperwork, he would know that the only time they call you is if something comes back abnormal. Very disappointed and as of right now, we still don't have any answers. He was there on Wednesday evening and even though every ER doctor in the place checked him over & all had different opinions, we are still no closer to a diagnosis. I guess we'll be driving the extra few miles to Rex from now on. read more

Took our five year old in for an issue and we were treated fast, efficiently and with the utmost care. Dr. Mcdane ( i think was his name) and the nurses Jennifer, Trina and April were all so nice. The doctor had our sick boy laughing and had great bedside manner. We moved to Apex recently and this has just been another good experience out here. read more

I am very disappointed with the high bills that i received from Wakemed for practically no real services. Such abuse is only going to drive the healthcare costs to unreasonable levels simply pushing middle class to run away from healthcare institutions . Here is my story: Wake Med Emergency center has issued a bill of nearly 719$ for an emergency visit. I went to Fasted Urgent Care on one fine morning due to sore throat and symptoms of tonsillitis. They said that i have some abscess in the throat and needs to be removed by visiting an emergency hospital/center thus i went to WakeMed emergency . Upon diagnosis the P.A at Wakemed couldn't find any abscess hence ordered for a strep test . I was simply waiting in the room all the while for the results and at the end of the visit I was given was a 10 day antibiotic prescription. Now when i see a bill for $1468 (excluding insurance discount, $719.03 from my end ) for emergency visit it seems to me clear sign of abuse of the system. I can't fathom the fact that the charges are so high just for visiting an emergency facility where no specific procedure was performed. After this I received another bill for around 125$ for Wakemed physician services for the date of service.....So at the end the grand total is $ 1000 from my pocket and for what real medical service i wonder? is there no accountability on how much an hospital can bill? or is it a run away train? anyone listening? I raised a grievance through official channels and received no response expect a call from the billing department asking to pay up the bill else face action from collection agency.... on asking about the status of grievance - received a cold response that it cant be changed! I wonder even if they really looked at the grievance with any seriousness! Patients beware !!!! Bills will kill your peace of mind! I am still hoping to hear back from proper channels of WakeMed on why the bills were so high - please convince me! Update March 1 2017 - I received a call from the patient finance team ( meanwhile i paid the bill in full) saying that they can't do anything about the bill since I did a strep test during my visit and that constitutes a certain level of service which warranties an higher bill. I told them that i paid the money in full from my HSA , so this fight is not for me alone but for many others who can't even afford to pay such bills. I still don't understand why the bill was so high - if we were to break the total bill into expenses and profit I am convinced the total cost for them was in few hundred dollars rest was all profit .......no wonder healthcare is not affordable any longer..America needs to learn from few other countries where healthcare is affordable without compromise on care..... And his is not the problem with WakeMed alone but with every other provider in the nation!More the fixing healthcare payor we need to fix the healthcare provider costs! read more

Horrible, and possibly dangerous, experience last night at Apex Healthplex!! My wife had an accident at home that resulted in a fractured toe and a deep open cut. We went to Rex Urgent care first. The Dr. there was great. He numbed the pain and dressed the wound but told us the cut went all the way to the bone and they have no narcotics for pain at that facility and said we needed a full blown emergency room. Apex Healthplex was the nearest and he called them to let them know we were coming. He said we needed to have this closed asap because an open fracture can become infected even into the bone and that would be very bad. The check-in was easy and we were back in the treatment area reasonably quickly. Several nurses came in for the usual vitals, weight, etc. In due course a PA, Ms. Jeffrey, came in and examined the wound. She said we'd need an xray and she stressed how infection of an open wound was so very dangerous. The xray was taken and confirmed a fracture. We then sat in the treatment room for a couple of hours without the wound being closed with stitches. We arrived at Apex Healthplex at around 4:30pm and we were not discharged until about 10:30pm. The real issue was that my wife was in that facility for about 5 hours before the wound was sutured and closed. On two occasions I went out and insisted that the wound be closed. I told the nurses I spoke with that we were repeatedly warned of the danger of infection to an open wound and yet they allowed the wound to stay open for nearly 5 HOURS before closing it. The PA was working with a Dr. (Macready, I think) and they were both supposed to stitch the wound. As the Dr. put it "she stitches some and I stitch some". I was told (by a nurse) that both the PA and the Dr. were aware of my complaints and would be along "soon". When I went out again to plead for stitches to close the wound I was told the PA was "on the phone" and would be along "in a while". At that point I allowed as how I would be furious if my wife got a serious infection in her open wound and I would take legal action. Naturally, I was put down as a trouble maker. At 9:15pm the wound was closed and 1 hour later we were discharged. I understand that when you go to an ER it will be a long ordeal and I accept that (even though there was no one else in the ER when we arrived). The excessive time is not my issue it is the interminable time to close an open fracture, especially after they warned us of the serious risk of infection to that specific injury! I feel the neglect of the PA and the Dr. was dangerous to my wife and bordered on malpractice. read more

Worst experience ever!! Checked my daughter into the hospital around 11:50 pm and was placed in a room around 12am...then nothing!! Nothing happened for the entire next hour and a half. At 1:30 am I began to leave, only then did a nurse have the adudacity to state "you haven't been seen by the doctor yet"?! I've been here for over an hour...the ONLY patient and you actually forgot about me. I went to another hospital but guess what...WakeMed Apex has yet to discharge me!! The place is beautiful, and the people inside are great. I have had to go here twice for my father. The thing that makes me give this hospital such bad reviews is that the billing department sucks. I gave them my insurance card when we came in, and they lost the information. Then i had to go through a nightmare of phone calls and threatening letters before they could get it that i did have insurance. You have to explain your story over and over to phone operators who don't take much interest in customer service. In these hard time, places like this need to kick it up a notch. I have no problem going to another place around here. read more

I went to this ER based on symptoms that were mimicking appendicitis. I was in a lot of pain, and had been sick for a few hours. Typically I don't rush off to the er but this felt like I needed to go. I felt like I was a burden to the doctor, I was the only one there at 5:30 am, and that he wasn't truly listening to me, like he was talking down to me. Next thing I know another doctor comes in to tell me were sending you home, with Prilosec. Oh and you have a lesion on your kidney, follow up with your primary. What?! He just shrugged his shoulders like I dunno. And out he went. I didn't feel like they cared about me at all, but guaranteed they would care if I didn't pay the ridiculous bill. How hard is to treat someone like you give a crap, you signed on to be a dr or nurse, to help people right? The only reason I gave two stars was because it appeared clean, and I had a couple of nice nurses and ct tech. read more

Arrived with chest pressure/nausea. Seen immediately. Given water view room, monitored, EKG, blood tested, staff could have not been nicer or more professional... Dr. Cook Gorgeous facility. Not a heart attack, but wanted to rule out other possibilities. Would have transported me to WakeMed, Cary for stress test, but I drove there. Just came home after over two hours waiting for someone to be seen with a broken arm. They were rude and never did have him be seen by a doctor. Four people went in ahead of us as the patient with the broken arm had no proof of insurance on him. They laughed at us and were rude when I asked if he could go in to get his xray or could someone be told he is in extreme pain and has been waiting over 2 hours. Do not go there unless you have no other choice. We had to go to another er to be seen. read more

I have read the comments and agree especially if you go there very late at night ... some of them are napping at their desk/some of them are laughing and really seem not to have anything to do/Doctor I saw was on his lap top doing email and or looking on websites. Parking lot is never full of cars/while I was there, maybe two people came in for assistance. The people were not very up beat or willing to help .. which leads me to the staff/rude/pushy/not willing to listen to me/created their own observation of me/lied to me/would not let me get in touch with my Doctor/kept me there from 2:00 until 11:30 the next day/**saw a Doctor one time and it was because I was asking questions and he was very rude! They shipped me off to Holly Hill in an ambulance with a police woman, My Doctor said they should have gotten in touch with her and I would not have had to go through all of that crap. My son died and I needed some help ... HELP? just wanted to get rid of me/move me some place else because they did not want to deal with what had happened to me. My quest for help at this facility $$$ almost $7,000.00. Will not pay for it! I did talk to the management/many email/documentation .. finally talked to the Doctor that saw me for about 1 minute and all he could say was "I agree to disagree" .... Most important thing you need to know is .... they are "rent a Doctor/rent a Nurse, they are not employees of this Hospital !!!!!!!!!!!!! read more

Appointment overall was well. But beware! I went here because they were in network with my insurance but when they sent my ultrasound to the radiologist they were out of network and tried to charge me $300. I filed an appeal with my insurance to let them know I was never told the radiologist would be outside of my insurance. While that was processing wake radiology threatened to send me to collections. I left them a message stating that the claim was still processing with appeals and they sent me to collections anyways. And from there I was harassed by a collection agency. They even told me that wake radiology told them not to bother with an appeal because my insurance wouldn't pay for it. After fighting this claim my insurance covered it and I was only responsible for 20%. Moral of the story is don't just pay because they threaten you, you can fight it and eventually it'll get resolved. Very disappointed in this facility! read more

The facility is updated and makes you feel like you've checked into a 5 star place..however, once you check in, they take forever to discharge you. I had to take my 5 yr old in for neck pain, since we were tad late to the Outpatient Imaging services..and all I needed to know was if there was a fracture. 3 hrs and 20 mins later, the radiologist had still not gotten to the images. I had to leave against medical advise to relieve my kind neighbors watching my 3 yr old. All I needed was an X-ray diagnosis and some medical guidance, and got neither..
