From start to finish the backyard project took over a year to finish. Our backyard project was not big. This was an extremely stressful process as we had to check up on the work throughout; at points we went months without any work being done and David always had an excuse. Admittedly, we didn't have all the final decisions made prior to the start and things were fluid at times but there was always work that could have been done which didn't happen unless we pushed. With the amount we paid we thought the owner would have been more helpful with design but were left to do research and find/look at materials ourselves. We had to withhold payments because work wasn't being done despite being pestered and payments demanded from the owner. Numerous times we had to have conversations regarding progressive payments being demanded by the owner despite lack of work being performed. The only thing that motivated the owner to get back to work was us withholding payment. The owner clearly had too many projects and not enough workers resulting in the customer suffering which we heard from one of the workers was an issue with his other jobs too. We had a large landscaping company come out while we had one of the long breaks in work and pointed out many issues and stated they would've completed the job in 3 weeks. It was exhausting and stressful to have to inspect every aspect of the job and find subpar work being performed/corners being cut. An issue we still have is drainage, which we questioned the owner about prior to finishing the project but were assured it wouldn't be an issue. We trusted him but again learned the hard way not to. We are going to have to hire another company to fix the lake that arrives in the middle of our backyard when a large rain occurs. Our project was expensive and his bid was on the high side compared with others so needless to say we expected much better.

Owner/landscaper David Shelly expertly guided us through a transformation that began with our rudimentary sketch of design ideas and ended with a lush, vibrant, welcoming outdoor space ideal for both relaxing and entertaining. We appreciated David's collaborative approach to tackling what could have been an overwhelming project for us: removing existing vegetation and hardscape; installing irrigation and drainage, driveway and courtyard pavers, large moss rocks, and a dry riverbed; constructing terraced cultured stone retaining walls and a stone staircase; amending and tilling soil; and planting low water native plants. David managed the project in stages, allowing us the flexibility to make decisions about design, materials, and vegetation as the landscaping evolved. Experienced in outdoor design as well as hard and soft scaping, David provided tailored options for construction materials and zone-appropriate vegetation. He did much of the work himself and was a stickler for details such as the placement and patterning of pavers. When his crew (who were professional and hard-working) were on site, he came out often to check on work quality and progress. David ensured we were all on the same page by listening closely to our ideas, setting clear expectations in written estimates, and promptly responding to our questions and concerns. Even after completing the project, he followed up on unexpected issues including applying protective coating to the retaining walls to address leeching and replacing struggling plants. We feel fortunate to have found such a conscientious professional in David. In fact, we've just hired him again to help with a backyard refresh and can't wait to get started!

Alex and his crew were efficient, careful, communicative, quick and courteous…read more Alex met with me to discuss the project, which entailed installing a drainage system, removing a tree stump, building a retaining wall and replacing some dangerous steps with new safer ones. He made suggestions but also really listened and addressed any questions thoughtfully and thoroughly. Midway through the drainage system installation, he pointed out a place where I had some dry rot that should be repaired before they finished the work. Alex was flexible and waited to hear back from me that my repairs were done before coming back to complete his work. I'm so grateful for that, and also that we caught the issue before more damage had been done! The retaining wall and grading look great as do the rock work, drainage system and new concrete steps. All was completed in just 1-1/2 days, and for a very fair price. As an added bonus, the driveway and parking pad benefitted from extra gravel, including Alex and his team moving a heavy trailer to freshen up the area underneath with new stone. My "regular" maintenance guy couldn't make it to service my yard and I had really important guests coming over that weekend. I called around all the other landscape maintenance guys in the Auburn area, and they all pretty much laughed at me saying that nobody would service my yard in such short notice.. I was beginning to lose hope and made one final call to MV Maintenance and spoke with Willis(very professional BTW)... He told me he was backed up the whole day with clients and said to me that he'll see if he could squeeze me in later in the day.. So I waited anxiously thinking that he was just giving me the run-around like all the guys had done prior.. Time was definitely of the essence and I began to panic.. Sure enough, Willis and his crew pulls up and saved the day.. They began repairing the broken sprinkler that my neighbor had ran over the week before and cleaned up my yard, exceeding all of my expectations.. They came promptly to repair it and discovered an old irrigation pipe was not properly capped (work done by a different team who dug the trench). The team spent a few hours--at no charge--repairing. They turned off the water source, preventing any future problems, and re-laid the pavers once the repair was complete. It looks as good as new! I called Lee to give us an estimate for a retaining wall that we are planning on having built. He…read morehappened to be in our area when I called, and was able to set a time just a few hours from when I called to come and have a look. He arrived right on time. He spent a long time discussing our project with us, and what he and his team could do. It was obvious he had a great deal of experience building retaining walls, and knew what had to be done, and how to do it. We happened to mention we needed to repair or replace our flagstone pathway. He doesn't do flagstone itself, but he did suggest a paver that looks just like random flagstones, but has several advantages compared to the real thing. At no time did we ever feel under any pressure to "choose him". He was simply professional, honest, and open with what he could do, and how it would be done. He sent us a detailed bid, breaking out the retaining wall and flagstone-like paver work separately, so we could do one, or both. His price for the retaining wall was in line with other estimates we'd gotten (and the paver pathway seemed reasonable, but we had no comparisons for that). In the end, we decided to go with a different contractor, who could do all the landscaping we are planning on. (Lee's company focuses on hardscapes only.) But if in the future we have a hardscape-only project, Lee will probably be our first call.

Not the best experience. I spent thousands and thousands of dollars on my front yard with Gary as…read morethe lead. This was 5 years ago. I agreed to use the Ipe wood as it was told to me this is the finest wood and will last a really long time. Now five years later, the posts are rotted, and the whole fence is leaning. I've had to have someone redo my whole layered fence. I wrote to Gary twice, no response! I think a good businessman would come out and repair this. Gary put in 4 posts; new guy put in 7. Clearly there was a little problem with Gary's judgment on what was needed. AND he wanted payment in full before job was done! Not a happy customer here!

Gary listened to my ideas for the brick patio and during the project he was very responsive to my questions and input. He was on site on a regular basis and anytime I needed him to come out. Randy did a fabulous job prepping the area, installing all the bricks, plants, drip and fountain. There was a problem area in another part of the yard that they landscaped as well. This was a large job and a ton of labor. The team was onsite as promised, on time and worked all day. Gary scheduled our daily start and end times appropriately. This helped with some of my neighbors who like to complain but that did not happen. Gary is a good project manager, is very talented, has a ton of experience and has a good team.
