We met with Gary Holt after being "ghosted" by another landscape designer...which turned out to be fortuitous! When he came, we walked him through what we wanted, which was quite a bit of work. He took that back and after a week or so provided us with a quote. In addition, we had some items as optional, pending our budget at the time of the project. After we approved and sent a small deposit, we scheduled a tentative start date, which was about 4 month out (during Covid days, everything takes longer). As we approached the date, I contacted Gary and he asked to push out a couple of weeks due to other projects taking longer than anticipated. That was fine with us...as mentioned, these things don't go so smoothly anymore! Anyway, after that short extra delay, the workers all arrived and work got started. The workers on the team were awesome. Friendly, knowledgeable, professional, and detail oriented. Gary was often out there, checking up on stuff and making sure we were happy. As work progressed, we had a payment play in place and that's how we went. The worst part was the pergola we wanted was delayed, repeatedly. That's not Gary's fault. At the end, we agreed to order 3 similar ones and take the first one that arrived. It did, about 6 months after the rest of the work was done, but once it did, the team came and installed it and we couldn't be happier! Overall, we are truly enamored with our new backyard! It's our oasis and Hold Landscape Inc brought it into being. It did take patience...and like some people have mentioned, communication can sometimes not be that great, but based on my experience and other people's (who hired other landscapers), that's kind of the way it is. Not the best experience. I spent thousands and thousands of dollars on my front yard with Gary as the lead. This was 5 years ago. I agreed to use the Ipe wood as it was told to me this is the finest wood and will last a really long time. Now five years later, the posts are rotted, and the whole fence is leaning. I've had to have someone redo my whole layered fence. I wrote to Gary twice, no response! I think a good businessman would come out and repair this. Gary put in 4 posts; new guy put in 7. Clearly there was a little problem with Gary's judgment on what was needed. AND he wanted payment in full before job was done! Not a happy customer here! read more

Gary Holt did a great job on our new courtyard. I had been planning this project for a few years and he and his great team (Randy) made it happen. Gary listened to my ideas for the brick patio and during the project he was very responsive to my questions and input. He was on site on a regular basis and anytime I needed him to come out. Randy did a fabulous job prepping the area, installing all the bricks, plants, drip and fountain. There was a problem area in another part of the yard that they landscaped as well. This was a large job and a ton of labor. The team was onsite as promised, on time and worked all day. Gary scheduled our daily start and end times appropriately. This helped with some of my neighbors who like to complain but that did not happen. Gary is a good project manager, is very talented, has a ton of experience and has a good team. If you're researching a qualified and reliable landscaping company, look no further than using Gary Holt of Holt Landscaping! I started my search back in March 2025 when visiting a Home & Garden show at Cal Expo. After speaking with a few reps at vendor tables and looking over the program book, I reached out to 7 landscape companies post show to attain proposals. 3 provided proposals but never followed up, 1 said they'd only consider submitting a proposal if the project was $50k or more (I have a smaller yard and, of course, a budget), 2 never replied to my "Contact Us" outreach from their website and then Gary and I connected. He and I met three times to discuss my initial ideas then had follow up communication via email and text. He has a great energy about him and offered some good suggestions to supplement my ideas; he's also a classy guy, offering landscaping services for over 30 years so he knows his stuff. His crew installed all the plumbing and irrigation for new sod, a small flower bed, plants and trees, a pool equipment fence and a fun 3-hole putting green. The crowning project was Gary's team took two sections of our back fence that faces an open field and created drop down tables from the top of the fence, so cool! The crew cut the top half of fence horizontally then added hinges and sliding locks to allow the top portion of the fence to drop down. Gary then suggested installing small posts to the top of the fence to act as table legs that conveniently fall into place when the top of the fence is opened. Now hubby and I can choose either fence to drop down and enjoy a wide open view. I would have included a photo but wasps seemed to congregate near the fence so I'll add a photo later. Gary's crew was great, with Randy as the project foreman making sure all tasks were going according to plan PLUS, he and the crew cleaned up each day they were here! It's hard to find a company/vendor you can trust to perform quality work. Gary Holt is one person that you can trust from start to finish. My experience with Holt Landscape was very good from the beginning to the end. The initial planning was very easy: I told Andre my vision, and he added more ideas that enhanced the plan. The crew, Ruben and Yani were very meticulous. From the removal of the old lawn, to the placement of the rocks, everything was done perfectly. They were very careful not to disturb my Covid project: my succulent fountain. They cleaned up after each day of work. Then came planting time. Again, I gave them the type of plants that I liked, but because they were the experts, I trusted them to choose the proper ones that would thrive during this drought that we're having. Gary worked his magic. I can't wait to see all these plants mature. A couple of weeks after the project was completed, there were two plants that weren't doing very well. One actually died. I'm thrilled with the work Holt Landscape did for me. They renovated my backyard - curved redwood deck with surrounding curved rock wall on two sides; pergola with lights, ceiling fan, misters and retractable canopy and shades; two water features; new grading, irrigation and drainage; flagstone walks; and extensive soil preparation, planting, and shredded bark cover. We had an amazing landscape design created by a local designer. Unfortunately, Holt was one of their only two 'preferred' landscape contractors. I contacted Holt to provide us with a quote on the entire project. Holt stopped by a week later, on appointment, and listened to what I wanted and took measurements and photos of the project. I didn't hear back for more than two weeks, and after sending in an inquiry, I was finally provided a quote which was more than double what our designer had estimated! Our quote, for our 38' by 16' tiny backyard was around $50,000!!! $9,500 for a trellis with a roman sail, and $8,800 for a 3' round fish pond were some of the charges! I wrote back and said I didn't anticipate such a high cost, and nor did our designer, so I asked Holt if I could work in phases, also doing some of the menial labor myself (I can apply herbicide and break up a concrete square in front of my door and save the $850 they wanted to charge). Holt has ignored me ever since, and it's quite apparent that if we don't want to spend an entire $50,000 all at once, they have no interest in doing business with us. Always get multiple quotes, and I highly suggest you all go in phases, hiring specific licensed contractors for specific jobs. You will save a lot of money that way, though it may take you longer to complete your project, it will be worth it in the end. read more

Cynthia - Holt refused to speak to me. There is nothing to talk about. We sent you certified mail to which there was no response. Further, you can blame your contract. The LAW puts an obligation on the contractor to ensure a permit is in place BEFORE starting the work. Which you didn't. Lame response on your part for anyone educated on the matter. My backyard has a big slope down to one of the lakes in Treelake Village. The main center part was all grass. I wanted to remove almost all of the grass and put in terracing, drought-tolerant native plants, and a path down to the gate next to the lake. I contacted about 6 different companies - only two replied. I was immediately impressed with the plan made by Andre, the manager. The team came every day for 6 weeks (except during the heavy rains), put in exactly what I had pictured in my mind and were just wonderful to work with. Andre and owner Gary Holt came out often to see the progress. They installed 3 18-inch walls to terrace the yard, filled in with dirt and liners to cut down on weeds under the new grass, new plants and shredded bark. The flagstone steps go from the grass, at the top, to the gate. It's absolutely beautiful and exactly what I wanted. Almost every plant has flowers to attract bees, hummingbirds and butterflies. The crew was very careful, cleaned afterward so I wouldn't have any work to do. I'm now enjoying an environmentally friendly and spectacular yard! read more
