My wife and I was looking to narrow down a great landscaping team that could take on a three area project for our new place. We inquired with CaliGreen landscaping through Yelp and John immediately responded back within 30 minutes to have our first initial conversation over the phone and then to set up an in person the next day. We met November 2024 and unfortunately could not pull off the project immediately and had to postpone for 12 months and not once was John bothering us after about the project. We were super happy with our experience with Caligreen. We had them remove a ton of old plants, trees, and ivy, and install sod, native flowers, ground cover, and a new irrigation system. I called to schedule someone to come out to my house to look at our project and give us an estimate. I received a text indicating that their installation typically starts around $8000 and they are 2-3 weeks out and asked if that was okay. I responded back by text summarizing our project and gave them my phone number to contact me. They text me back asking what part of town I lived in and if I knew the square footage of the grass. My husband measured so I text back what he calculated. The person text me back a price of $22,000 and explained the price includes material and labor, excavation and new installation. This was an immediate turn off. It turns out my husband measured incorrectly and the square footage was only 2380 instead of 4000. So, I text back the new measurement. A new price was text to me of $14,500. This company didn't want to come out and was price conditioning me. I reached out to this company after seeing so many glowing reviews on Yelp, but my experience was far from what I expected. Right off the bat, I received a text informing me they're booked until November and have a minimum job price of $6,000. I understand that good companies are in demand, but this kind of information should be made clear on their website so customers aren't blindsided. What really took me aback was their refusal to offer design services. They expect potential clients to provide detailed drawings and measurements just to get an estimate. My wife and I had a massive landscape project in our backyard that we wanted to undertake for years. We went through the planning and design process ourselves, and received In-Person consultations from over 10 landscaping companies. Unfortunately, many of the landscaping companies did not provide us quotes, or took more than a month to offer us a quote. If this rating system went up to 10 stars, my experience and my resulting project installed by Caligreen would get all 10 stars. I have had a lot of contractors conduct work for me, and Caligreen was my best experience. From day one that I called for an estimate of my fairly large project, John provided a detailed estimate. John also was the foreman on the job everyday for the 11 days of project implementation. We had a daily morning walk-through of the project progress and we discussed change that I wanted as the project started taking shape. He was extremely responsive to every question and comment I had (and I had alot). Also, as the foreman, he was there with his crew doing the really hard work also, while supervising the quality. Throughout the entire experience, I continued to notice just how responsive, respectful and polite these contractors are. All unexpected items that popped up were resolved without a defensive attitude. On days that there was more work to be done, John had his brother Mark also working along side him and the crew. That is when I learned this family company has their heart in their company's product. The crew were the same hardworking company employees throughout the entire project. Luis, Martin and Raul, conducted their work with care. They worked in hot Sacramento Valley July/August heat through the entire day, and I could hear them talking, singing and laughing among each other, working really well as a team. If you had seen what my backyard looked like before, you would've been shocked with the end result. It was basically a forest that was completely unusable. John came out promptly and gave me a quote and walked me through our plans. He was very knowledgeable and had great ideas since we were completely unsure of what to do. One thing I really appreciated that he repeated the plans multiple times throughout the meeting just so he made sure I was still on board with the plans. Caligreen's quote was very competitive but what I appreciated most was that John and I went back and forth over text for a few weeks before I actually made my decision. I wanted to pick his brain and see what else we could add to the project. He really stuck with me and when I was ready to go forward, we were all on the same page. I had to get my backyard cleared prior to them starting since I had several tall trees and lots of brush. It was a small expense to clear the backyard but allowed them to have a clean slate when they started. This project only took about 10 days and the team was here every morning at 7:30 to get going. These guys work so hard! I did need to make an addition as we wanted a few light poles which they were able to quote out quickly and get them installed during the project. Scheduled an estimate quickly. Came out and after talking the job over, an estimate was provided later that day. This was to replace 2 yards, one normal size front main yard and a smaller plot shared with a neighbor. Estimate was for $5000: completely tear out old yards, replace with rocks, brick border, path walkway with stepping stones around the front house, 8 plants, and re-pathing my existing drip system to those plants. Anyway they did a fantastic job as you see in the attached photos. This only took 3 days and went without a hitch. Mark is available via text consistently and open to answering questions you might have. One thing I particularly appreciated was the suggestions provided. I knew overall I wanted my yard replaced with something no maintenance, like rocks, but mark provided a handful of suggestions via text before the estimate. And you can trust you'll end up with something nice even if you don't have an idea yourself. So results are great, quick, easy, and everything I hoped for. I've got a huge job coming up for my backyard and I'd happily hire again One thing I have to mention. There was slight confusion initially on whether I wanted the plot of land my neighbor and I share completely done, or only my half. Mark thought I wanted just the half, but i noticed and asked the 2nd day he agreed to finish for an additional $550. I don't mind the additional cost, but we could've avoided the confusion by doing a full walkthrough on the first morning of work. So that's an easy additional step they could add. I got lucky to have the company on my project. That was landscape installation on a new construction yard(front and back. Concrete was already installed). Here is what we really liked: 1.
