However,…read moreI will be switching offices for a few reasons. 1 - Lack of transparency regarding cost I was asked to sign a document about procedures that may happen. I want my physician and his staff to tell me what they know, which includes cost. Yes, it's my responsibility to ask, but it also their responsibility to tell. 2 - Not cultivating an environment of comfortable dialogue I would have liked Dr. Wessels and his staff to tell me about the procedures ahead of time - when procedures are advantageous and when they are not necessary. I understand an exam is often needed in determine prognosis. However, I would have appreciated the physician take a few extra minutes to show the patient dignity by having them sit up to share face-to-face any concerns and advice the physician may have as well as leave room for the patient to ask questions. Do NOT ask if a patient wants a procedure when he/she is in the midst of an uncomfortable and vulnerable exam. It's unprofessional and inconsiderate. The left the office feeling shame that I hadn't asked questions about cost nor advocate for a more comfortable setting, but also frustration that the physician didn't offer cost information up nor provide a comfortable environment to do so.

This situation has caused irreparable damage to my trust in medical settings. As a professional, I have never experienced nor witnessed anything like this. Note: The front desk clerks and all the medical staff are all excellent - not one complaint. On Mon., Sept. 22, 2025, while sitting connected and receiving an iron infusion, I was confronted by Dr. Francisco Antonio Castillos III about a recent online bad review related to their office dog that he assumed I wrote. I've attached a picture of the review he shoved in my face as he glared at me with disgust and repeatedly accused me of writing. There was one other patient sitting in the last chair of the row who saw and heard it all. It's important to note that I prefer not to engage with dogs. I received several iron infusions at this practice within the past few years and the office dog roamed around freely then too. The nurses have always done a great job making sure I was comfortable. When I returned for treatment most recently, it happened to coincide with when this bad review he accused me of writing was left. According to the review, this other patient has both a phobia and an allergy to dogs. During the confrontation, I pointed out that I don't have an allergy to dogs but he insisted I was the one who wrote the review. The most important point in all of this is that, I did not write the review and even after saying that I would have no problem admitting it if I had written the review, he was fixated that I did. At first, he claimed it was attached to my first and last name somewhere online but later described it as an "online review." Based on how he approached me, I felt unsafe and helpless. I couldn't just get up and leave. After going back and forth, I told him to show me where my name was attached to the review, and he told me I could speak with his practice manager. Once my infusion was complete, the nurse was bandaging my arm, and he came over with an unauthentic, apologetic tone. After he initially confronted me, I decided to start recording our interactions because I knew I wanted to consult an attorney to explore legal action against him. His change in tone may have come from his practice manager telling him he was wrong or maybe he realized on his own that he was wrong. Either way, the damage had already been done and there would be no way to reconcile. He walked me down to a conference room where I would meet with his practice manager, laid down the paper that included the review on the conference table, and walked out. I took a pic and video of the paper. Once the practice manager came in, I recorded our full conversation as well. My attorney informed me that there's no legal recourse for this specific situation, but I can file a complaint with the medical board which will be done as soon as the public is warned through these online reviews. The public deserves warning of any doctor that would hostilely confront and falsely accuse a patient in front of another patient of writing a bad review about their practice. Because of this situation, I would personally never accept nor allow anyone I know to receive treatment or medical advice from Dr. Francisco Antonio Castillos III. Now, THIS review is attached to my name and THIS review has been written by the patient who you confronted and falsely accused today, Monday, September 22, 2025 between 8am-9am ET of previously writing a bad review. The review you "accused" me of writing and hostilely confronted me about has now resulted in a medical board complaint with video/audio to accompany it and multiple negative online reviews, everywhere I can find to review you. The last infusion that I was to receive I was excused without treatment because I was said to be a racist. I went to another Hematologist and they told me that I should not have received any of these infusions. My immune systems has been damaged and I have a high chance of getting anything that is out their. Not only that but I had two severe reactions to rituximab and another drug that was not supposed to be given to older patients. Apparently the continues change of staff and poor treatment of staff has created and very unhealthy situation. I do not recommend this facility for care. Now I'm stuck with a $200 bill and when I sent a payment they sent it back because they no longer take checks. So my options are send cash to an office that has already proven to me they are completely dishonest or send them my credit card number for all of the staff to have access to. My PCP and my Duke bariatric team both suspected I had SIBO and initially referred me to Duke Gastroenterology. However, because the wait to be seen was nearly a year, my Duke provider encouraged me to seek care outside of Duke and even offered to write a referral because they knew how overwhelmed their outpatient GI system was. After doing my research, I specifically chose Dr. C. because of his outstanding reputation and reviews. I wanted him to be my gastroenterologist and I felt fortunate to finally secure an appointment five weeks away. I even informed the Duke physicians during my hospitalization that I already had an appointment scheduled with Dr. C., and they told me that was great because I would need outpatient follow-up after discharge. Unfortunately, before my appointment, my condition worsened so severely that my physician instructed me to go to the emergency room, where I was hospitalized for six days and evaluated by Duke's inpatient GI team. While I was laying in the hospital bed, Dr. C.'s office called--not to check on me or ask how I was doing--but to cancel my appointment because I had been seen at Duke. I literally begged them to keep my appointment. I explained that I would desperately need outpatient follow-up after my hospitalization, that Duke's inpatient physicians do not become your outpatient gastroenterologists and that Duke itself had encouraged me to seek care outside of their system because of the year-long wait times and overwhelming backlog. I told them I knew Duke would not be able to get me a timely outpatient appointment and pleaded with them not to leave me without follow-up care. Despite my repeated pleas, they refused to keep my appointment and insisted that Duke was now responsible for my care. That assumption was completely wrong!!! After I was discharged, Duke confirmed exactly what I had tried to explain to Dr. C's office - they could not get me an outpatient GI appointment for months because their system is overwhelmed. Duke was doing the best they could with limited resources, but there simply were not enough outpatient appointments available. I was left without the continuity of care that every patient deserves after a six-day hospitalization and was forced to start over while still recovering. My insurance case manager was appalled when I explained what had happened. She specifically told me that what Dr. C.'s office had done was unacceptable, documented my complaint, told me it would be investigated, and personally helped me find another gastroenterologist who could see me much sooner. What hurt the most was that I genuinely wanted Dr. C. to be my doctor. I chose his practice because of its excellent reputation, yet the moment I sought emergency medical care because I was desperately ill, I felt like I was being punished for going to the hospital. Once the office learned I had been treated at Duke, it felt as though they wanted nothing more to do with me. That is not how patients should be treated. This review is not intended to attack Dr. C. personally or damage his reputation. It is simply my experience and I believe my voice deserves to be heard. Behind every appointment is a real person who is scared, sick, and depending on the healthcare system to help them. Healthcare systems may have policies and backlogs, but patients should always come first. In my case, I did not feel like they did and I hope sharing my story encourages this office to put compassion and continuity of care ahead of incorrect assumptions so that no one else has to experience what I did. Please keep in mind that Duke was the one that told me to seek care outside of the network. I sincerely hope this office reconsiders how it handles patients who require emergency hospitalization before their first appointment. No patient should be made to feel as though seeking emergency medical care disqualifies them from receiving the follow-up care they had already waited weeks or months to receive. Healthcare should put patients first.
