If you like to stay in quirky and historical hotels, check this one out for sure. Will it have…read moreluxury accommodations? Far from it. In fact, there's a good chance you'll have to deal with certain inconveniences. Still, it's an experience and if you appreciate that sort of thing, I recommend it. This particular hotel is based on the novel "The Virginian," by Owen Wister. It was published in 1902 and is hailed as the first Western. It takes place just outside of Medicine Bow. WEBSITE: https://historicvirginianhotel.vpweb.com/default.html. Their website has some information (including a couple photos of a few of the rooms) but is missing a lot of details so I'll do my best to fill you in. ROOM OPTIONS/RESERVATIONS: You have to call to reserve a room. They have several options. They are listed on their website but I'll do my best to elaborate. In the main hotel building, you've got sixteen antique rooms which includes four suites. This means they are decorated in a historical fashion and contain artifacts from a bygone era. They didn't have any suites available when we called but if I had my pick, I'd definitely stay in the suite. They were big and full of neat stuff (definitely felt like the most authentic/interesting experience the hotel had to offer). You won't find a TV or a fridge or a microwave in these rooms, FYI. The reason I'm familiar with these rooms is because we walked around and explored - they keep the doors open until the guests arrive so the rooms can be viewed. Also, not every room had an en suite bathroom. The suites definitely did. Some of the larger rooms may have, I don't recall. But from what I can remember, most rooms did not. There were several shared bathrooms in the hallway. Just be aware of that when you call to make your reservation. In addition to the antique rooms, there's a separate motel building. From what I understand, these are just basic motel rooms (probably best for someone who just wants a bed for the night and doesn't care about the history part of it). There is also a renovated bank building next door that has four rooms. This is where I stayed and I recommend it if you want a somewhat authentic experience but also want some conveniences. We could have gone with one of the antique sleeping rooms in the main building that shared a bathroom but we decided we'd prefer a private bathroom. The bank building rooms aren't as antique, but they have antique elements along with conveniences like a private bathroom, a fridge, and a microwave. Our room had an amazingly creepy altar on a wall shelf - an antique bassinet, a mirror, a suitcase. While I wish I stayed in a suite for a more authentic experience, it was a nice compromise. Either way, no matter where you stay, make sure you go into the main hotel building and check out the sleeping rooms as well as the sitting rooms (very cool, see my photo). ACCOMMODATIONS: I wasn't expecting anything fancy. Since we stayed in the bank annex, it was nice to have a fridge and a microwave. The bathroom was great - spacious and clean. No AC but we survived. There was one major problem with our room - our door didn't lock. I can deal with everything else but this is really important. You have to have a locking door. We tried multiple times and even asked for another key. At night, we posted a chair against the door for peace of mind. So just make sure your room locks when you check in. DINING: There's a dining room but you're also welcome to eat at the bar. As expected, the food was pretty mediocre. Also as expected, the menu had very little to accommodate a vegan diet. I had fries and a salad. I knew all this going in so I'm not complaining. ENTERTAINMENT: Behind the bar, there's a back area with a pool table and some slot machines. LOCATION: While not quite a ghost town, Medicine Bow doesn't have much going on. I'd recommend walking around the back of the hotel as there is an old jail building that you can explore. STAFF: Friendly.

Tried to stay there on a Saturday night in January, 2025. Bar locked. Restaurant locked. Hotel…read moreLocked. Got the impression it was between owners or closed for remodeling. I have stayed there several times between 1985 & 2001 and appreciated it, once overhearing guests at the next table (Robert Bakker, Industrial Light & Magic staff, and film producers) discussing how to incorporate recent paleontology discoveries into a movie that would be called "Jurassic Park".
