Can you believe that I have never been to a Waffle House? Well, I can check that off my list. One thing that I did want to do was stop at one of these at least once before heading home. We had one in the town we were staying in, but never got around to stopping. On our way out and on our way home we decided to give this a go as our late breakfast/lunch. It was easy to find and park. We walk in and right up to the counter and prepared for our show...I mean meal. Once we got to the counter and started looking over the menu the show started. It was quite entertaining watching the crew interact with one another. They were selecting the songs on the jukebox and jamming out to it as they had this store under control and working smoothly. I even caught myself laughing with other patrons as they were joking with one another. I knew I wanted Biscuits and Gravy, but I saw the hashbrown bowls and decided I'd go with one of those too, with sausage. My Dad went with one of their general breakfasts that came with a waffle. The food was what I expected and I really can't say much that hasn't been said by other people that have reviewed any Waffle House out there. What I enjoyed was the lively atmosphere. Being able to see that chef quickly get through the orders right in front of you. The servers were buzzing about like worker bees, and that's not because of the black and yellow coloring. It's a Waffle House with a flair that I usually find only in small towns in Tennessee. One of my favorite humans loves it here, so I've had occasion to be a repeat customer. I love this kind of hospitality where the server immediately nicknames the folks at the table "Honey, Sweetie, etc," and that's my name for the whole meal. Gotta love the Southern States! The operation is something to behold. Efficiency, chaos, urgency, and genuine hospitality all in a small, clean, "well-lighted place." I feel like my man Ron Swanson would approve of the portions and flavors. That right there is all the endorsement that you should need! But I'll add my own. We walked in the door and were greeted warmly by the staff who were all doing different jobs. As we sat down we began to realize that this restaurant is spotless. No grease on the floors (or anywhere), no dust. It just sparkled. The young man who waited on us was exceptionally kind to my 94 year old mother and shared some details about his family, too. We felt right at home. Our breakfast was prepared with care and was exactly as shown on the menu. Potatoes were crunchy and delicious and the eggs cooked as ordered. This is a hidden gem in the area off the highway in Athens, TN. You will not be disappointed. As we were leaving two employees were cleaning windows inside and out and told us to have a lovely day. I want to thank the Waffle House of Athens for being my first experience with a Waffle House. The first thing to mention is the service. The people were very inviting and friendly. They did a great job of taking care of us and were quick about everything. I never had an empty coffee cup. I have a feeling that Waffle House food is what it is, consistent. The food was prepared well for us, but it clearly isn't the highest quality of food, but I don't believe that's why people eat here. It's about dependability. Went this morning (Saturday) and the food was great as always. The staff and our waitress was very friendly and the restaurant was clean. My problem was the smell. After we ate and left our clothes smelled like food and grease. I don't know if the cook didn't have the vent on over the grill or if the business has gotten to that point of smelling like what is cooked. Either way the franchise owner needs to take note this will turn customers away. I don't want to eat at a restaurant where my clothes stink when I leave. read more

I can Waffle on about Waffle House for hours and hours, but I won't. I'll just tell you - it's good. I stopped in Athens Tennessee a number of times - usually to spend the night. It's your typical little American town, with every chain that you can imagine. Waffle House is one of the better ones because it's open 24 hours, and even though they always make me run (very quickly) to the bathroom, their hashbrowns all the way are pretty excellent. Or can be, depending who is cooking. Especially if you get extra chili all over them to make them really wet. Speaking of really wet the last time I was with here I was with my girlfriend. If I could rate 0 stars I would. Service was literally horrible. My waitress was literally so mean to me because I didn't want feces on my waffle. It took three hours for 3 waffles. When I finally got my food (if you could call it that) the strawberries had bugs in them, and the chocolate syrup smelled like dog dung. When I asked to speak to a manager the waitress flipped me off, and I never even got a refund..... I'm never going to Waffle House again! read more

When you look at the Waffle House they all look the same but the Athens Waffle House tends to know you after the first or second time your there. I always order the same cheesy eggs bacon with regular toast, I'm not sure why they make it so much better than me, but they do. What can I say, I love Waffle House! This is the only restaurant open passed midnight in Athens...and it's great. I really love the bacon egg and cheese sandwich with hash browns. They always have great coffee no matter what time if the day and I once heard that Waffle House cooks more streaks than any other restaurant chain in the country. Denny's just got worse than it already was. Only thing this place has going for it is being open 24 hours, and nothing more. The food is extremely poor quality, not even fit for a dog. I would say their food is bad but after sitting there for 15 minutes without even having my drink order taken I got up and left...the reason you ask? The waitress literally stood there and watched the cook finish an order before she yelled the next one at him...never asking anyone else what they wanted to drink or even attempting to speak to them...it was probably just busy you say..no, not at all. New shiny building, same ole service! There are some really good people who try to do their job well here, but there are a few who need to be fired for very poor customer service. The last time I went, our server left after she put our order in, like physically left the building and got in a car and drove away. All the other girls start complaining about her and saying they hope she doesn't come back. Halfway through our meal, BAM!
