These were honestly, unexpectedly amazing. The place has both waffles and ice cream, as well as a few other items and different combinations of the two. I decided to get the Antwerp with Nutella ice cream. It was just stellar. The waffles here are not the typical soggy grocery store ones. No, they are made in house and are liege waffles. So, more chewy and sugary with bits of crunch at the edges. The ice cream is also so so good. Super creamy. A pretty nice amount of Nutella flavor (could always be stronger though). My favorite dessert in pittsburgh. Ever since my first bite in Schenley Plaza (they used to have a kiosk there!), I knew I was sold. The fresh out of the iron waffle with cold icecream with hits of fruit always hits the spot. And it's not just a plain ol' waffle, it's a liege waffle, a superior more delicious version. I usually get the WAFFALLONIA where I can have unlimited toppings. A waffle with nutella topping, speculoos icecream, strawberries, and bananas is my favorite go-to. It's the perfect balance of not too sweet but sweet enough to satisfy that sweet tooth after a good meal. I'm salivating now just thinking about it. Additionally, I don't think I've ever had a poor service experience there. They've always been friendly, patient, and helpful when you're unsure or indecisive on what toppings to add to your waffle. What to get: Liege Waffle w/Spekuloos Spread. What else: I want to recommend more things but I don't want to spread myself too thin. If you have never been to Brussels and tried the heaven that is churned out at Maison Dandoy near the main square, the greatest Liege Waffles in the world, then this is a very very good attempt at giving you the joy without the travel expenses. It's not as good as Maison Dandoy, and is second in the USA (probably) to Wafles & Dinges of Manhattan, but other than that, it's the best version of a Belgian Waffle that I've ever tried outside of Belgium. And the fact that they serve Spekuloos (the amazing, delicious traditional Gingerbread spread which has to be imported from Belgium itself) on their waffles (make sure you ask for it) just adds to the experience (I love parentheses) (you can probably tell) (anyway I think this paragraph is just about done, don't you). Seriously, though, the name is very clever. Wallonia is the name that the Belgians call the Southern (French-speaking) part of the country. One of these days, Belgique-Belgie may split into two... the Flemish and the French. That would be a shame, but if it happens, it won't be unexpected. The title of this dessert spot is a play on the word Wallonia... one which I myself would be proud of. The price is not too bad, considering it's in the most expensive fancy part of Pitt, right next to Murray & Forbes. So grab one of these, and you're all Squirrelled away for the day in the best kind of way. It's a tiny little place with not much room to eat (just like the places in Belgium), service is fine, sometimes really friendly, sometimes curt (I mean literally my boy Curt works here, so...), and in general, it's perhaps the best dessert you can try in Pennsylvania. Stumbled upon this amazing find while in the area for dinner! I have an obsession with Belgium waffles and crave the authentic taste that I had when I visited Belgium. It is hard to taste the sugar waffle itself with the added toppings, so I would be glad to return and go for the simplest experience. Waffle is a good imitation of a Belgian liege waffle but it's not as crispy. Don't mix this up with the big round "Belgian" waffles you'd get at a breakfast joint. These are made with pearl sugar and they don't need any additional syrup because they're perfect on their own. Buttery sugary yeast goodness. Normally they have a bit of a crisp on the outside due to the sugar caramelizing on the waffle iron but this one is on the softer side and lacks that crisp. Flavor wise, however, the waffle is good and on point. You can add toppings or get ice cream with your waffle. We tried the plain one to compare to what we had in Brussels and it was close! I've stopped into Waffalonia recently during the COVID-19 lockdown with my wife, and it was just what we needed to break the monotony and bring some joy to some tough times. As always, the shop is clean and the staff was friendly and quick. On our first recent visit, I had a waffle with Dave and Andy's vanilla ice cream, strawberries, whipped cream, and a little caramel syrup. This is my go to at Waffallonia- when you combine these ingredients together, you essentially have the perfect dessert or sweet breakfast. This waffle was so tasty that when we were driving through Squirrel Hill a week later, I brought up Waffallonia to my wife and she answered "How did you know that I was thinking about it?" Needless to say, we stopped again and grabbed a takeout 6 pack of waffles to keep us going for awhile. We went home, added some strawberries and whipped cream, and were good to go. Well what about the leftover waffles, you ask? Freeze them, toast them for a bit, and they taste just as good as they did coming right off of the waffle iron at the store. They are made fresh, they are crisp on the outside and then fluffy and chewy on the inside. honestly unlike any American type waffle we've ever had! We've had to step away so that we don't get diabetes!!! It's so good! One of us prefers just the waffle, others have preferred getting ice cream of speckaloo on it! Speckaloo is just cookie butter! Service and food were great. It is a very small place with only two tables for dine in. It was empty when we got there and quickly filled up. We let the party behind us order first because we had no idea what to expect. We each ended up ordering one of the standard menu options and we were each pleased with the results. The waffles are probably the best waffle I ever ate. The tiny, crunchy, sugary bits were a pleasant surprise. My waffle was called "the Charleroi" and it had Nutella, bananas, strawberries, and I added a scoop of cinnamon ice cream. Don't leave out the ice cream! The waffle is warm, the Nutella and ice cream sort of melt over it and the fruit adds a nice freshness to the dessert.
