Updated Review 2019: Back to Wabi Sabi last weekend and everything was good as usual. We had Special Sashimi Plate and grilled shrimps. Don't forget to try the homemade dessert Japan Style Flan! So soft and smooth. Service was spectacular. A must-eat sushi restaurant in the area if you are into Japanese and Fusion food. Original Review: I was there with my friends and we love the place! Our appetizers included a few specials of the day: fish sashimi & deep fried bones, squid, and monkfish liver. All were good! Love the sauce that went with the monkfish liver: very balanced and complement the fish liver well. Then we had a few sushi rolls. Make sure to try their king salmon as sashimi or sushi roll! For 2 consecutive years we have been visiting Wabi Sabi for our anniversary and they never disappointed us. If you are into authentic Japanese cuisine this is where you want to visit. The fish used for sushi is definitely fresh, and they have good desserts as well. Price is quite decent for what they are offering. We also got a chance to talk to the owner and got a hold of some useful information. They usually order in small quantities to keep everything fresh so they can not accommodate excess customers, a lot of the negative reviews were saying they are not serving at late hours, which is true because they would be running out of ingredients and would rather not bring out crap just to earn your money. So book your table ahead if you want to eat here. They also order "daily special" fish/seafood, make sure you you check ahead if the special interests you. I only had a few of their hot food, still decent but I am more of a sushi person. Their dessert is very satisfying as well. I came here on a whim to celebrate the news of a promotion. The front of house was very accommodating considering it was a Friday and we were last minute reservations. We came in and were sat immediately. Décor: Nice clean black modern interior. Bench seating on one side and chairs on the other. Cutlery and utensils were clean and the table was attractive. Good place for a lunch date. Service: Servers were attentive and polite without being overbearing. The woman who seated us mentioned the special and was kind enough to explain the ingredients to our table. Food: We ordered 3 courses of food - Appetizers, Sushi, and Ramen. Appetizers - King Crab Salad, Shrimp Siu mai, Peanut butter pork dumplings Sushi - Sushi and Sashimi platter and Sashimi platter for 2 Ramen - Miso Duck Ramen The King Crab salad was nice, albeit much too rich. Given the name, I was expecting more crab flavor, but was greeted with a green mush of avocado, mayonnaise, crab, and parmesan on top of shredded lettuce. I was unable to discern individual pieces of king crab from the mixture, which was very very rich and powerfully over seasoned. The Siu mai was average and I did not indulge in the peanut butter pork dumplings, though I was told they were good. The Sashimi platter was of good quality, composed of Maguro, White tuna, Hamachi, and Salmon. Much better than what can be found at AYCE establishments nearby. It was quite expensive however. I also believe they use Tamari instead of shoyu. The star of the meal, however, was the Miso Duck Ramen. A large bowl of umami laden broth, lightly spiced with chili and the nutty aroma of miso and almost a whole duck breast sliced atop, christened with half a softboiled egg was presented to us. It had a wonderful but not overpowering duck aroma to it, accentuated by the slices of duck breast. It was a divine experience, one that I would surely come back for, despite the price. Overall, I would give this place a 3.75/5, .5 points taken away due to the pricing and .75 points taken away due to the appetizers. Nelson Yip, the once owner of Sushi House 21, strikes again, but this time with a vengeance, in a larger and more befitting space. The dishes are familiar favorites including the tasty roasted duck confit with mushroom risotto. The pan seared scallop risotto with uni sauce is equally delicious. The peanut butter dumplings sound absolutely ridiculous, but it works, and you end up wanting more; much more. The silky smooth cheesecake with black sesame ice cream is a mindblower. The service is attentive/friendly, and the scene, a lively one. Only fresh ingredients are used and no compromises are made. You will fall in love with this restaurant. You will fall in love with Nelson's wizardry in the kitchen, along with his unabashed playfulness with dishes influenced by French and Japanese cuisine. Delicious! We have eaten here twice so far and also ordered take out. Staff are very kind and nice. Service is organized and clean. The food looks great and tastes fresh. Everything we have tried is yummy. Top picks are wabisabi roll and tango mango. To be honest, we haven't had any cooked dishes, but really want to try curry noodles. The restaurant is very famous in New Jersey, we went there on a rainy day for dinner and not many people in the restaurant, most of them could be neighbors in that region. The oyster is very expensive and they should come from Japan which made it expensive. Fried seafood udon is super good and tasty, i would love to have it again when I go back to this place. Unagi don is super super tiny and I didn't expect it to be in such a small size, not worth the money. Sushi and sashimi are great and fresh. I was so excited to eat here given the reviews and recommendation from a good friend. The staff was very attentive and friendly, however the food was way beneath what I expected. For the price of the dishes I expected high quality and flavor profiles. The sushi rolls were falling apart and had no flavor. The squid was chewy and flavorless. The roasted duck was tender but very small, dry, and again lacking flavor. The restaurant was empty and we were the only people there for two hours. I was very excited to try this place from some of the reviews I saw, and a friend who had eating here once before. However, this is by far the worst Sushi experience I ever had. I ordered hey kamikaze roll that was made with shrimp, tempura and spicy tuna. The shrimp tempura was way overcooked, burnt to a crisp and hard as a Rock. I literally had to spit it out and leave it on my plate. I was very kind to the woman who served us, but she was very unsympathetic toward the situation. When she came to the table, and I explained what had happened. Instead of her having any sympathy, or apologizing for the condition of the food she went into full defense mode and begin to tell me that she's never had any one complained in her seven years of being with this restaurant establishment. I most certainly would've considered trying something else if her response was not so, aggressive, callus and argumentative.. My wife had a roll as well. She told me that her experience was the same, but she regretting ate it, to not be insulting. Afterward, she said her stomach felt horrible. Anyway, I never write a bad write up like this towards any restaurant or establishment. However, when people do not take any responsibility for doing something wrong they should get what they deserve. I still tipped the waitress 20%, but she was extremely rude even as I left, still defending the Chef as if he could not make any mistake. I would steer very clear of this place for the simple fact that they are way overpriced, and do not deliver on the Value! Yelp has them marked as $$$ restaurant. They should be marked as a $ establishment. Or fire their chef! And start taking responsibility for preparing better quality food! Enclosing my best advice is, to stay away! read more

What a wonderful hidden gem in town! I've been eyeing this place since moving into the area and finally decided to make reservations for Valentine's day. There was no pre-fix menu and figured it's a small enough restaurant where it wouldn't be overly crowded like one of your bigger fancier chain restaurants. Let me start by saying, I cannot wait to visit again! Our experience was truly incredible and I have zero bad things to say. (the only exception being the two tops were extremely together, but being Valentine's day, you can't really blame them.) We arrived early for our reservation and the restaurant was packed but were still sat right away. Our server Marco was very tentative and did a great job taking care of us. For our food, we started with the truffle edamame and rock shrimp as our appetizers. The edamame was out of this world and i've been thinking about it ever since. The rock shrimp was also very delicious but be forewarned that it is covered in spicy mayo. For our entrees we decided to share the steak on a stone and the sushi and sashimi deluxe. It was plenty of food, the interactive dish for the steak on a stone was a nice perk and the fish was very fresh!! We were so full we had to skip on dessert but I highly recommend this place. Slow getting check. Seated at a table on a Friday night after 8:00, they would not serve us Omakase, they said we had to order in advance. The A5 Wagyu nigiri was cold by the time it came to our table. Who wants cold steak? Sashimi for two had 6 pieces of 6 different fish. I thought they would be a little more creative. Okay, I have resisted writing a review because I want this place to be a little secret gem, but it's just too darned good! The food is amazing, the place is very comfortable and the service is great! The truffled edamame is absolutely incredible. It's messy, you'll get it all over your hands, but honestly you just want to lick it off, it's so good. The smoked duck breast appetizer is a delicious little kick of luscious duck meat. The chef's special sushi rolls are uniformly wonderful. They always taste smooth, super-fresh and harmoniously put together. I especially like "Bob's Roll", but I'm jealous of Bob, whoever he is, that he gets such a wonderful dish named after him! Went here again only to find that all of the things I raved about in my earlier review have been stripped from the menu. The foie gras, the pate, the yellowtail with truffle butter drizzle... all gone as is most of the earlier menu and french influence. what once was an honest to god gem of an amazing restaurant right here in Bloomfield is now simply a mediocre sushi joint. We finally found a go-to sushi spot in our new town. My husband made a reservation for Friday night. We brought a bottle of Cab and were seated as soon as we arrived at 8p. As noted in previous reviews, you are pretty much elbow to elbow with other parties. Otherwise the restaurant has a nice modern ambiance. We had the truffle edamame and fried squid app to start. I love truffle everything so I enjoyed the edamame. My husband and I shared the sushi and sashimi for 2 which was delicious. All the fish was fresh and presentation was impressive. Decided to meet up with some friends and fam to avoid watching the NBA Draft since Phil Jackson is just making my Knicks an NBA Joke. My quick break down below (Insert Emoji Finger Pointing Down Here) Customer Service: (4.5 out of 5 Stars) Our waitress was outstanding and very professional and most importantly PATIENT!!!. We were all over the place with what to get questions etc.. but she remained professional and helpful and knowledgeable of the menu. Everyone was nice and helpful. Only negative was I had to keep asking every now and then for water since they had these little glasses I would literally down the glass in two sips lol (Just leave a large Bottle of water on the table so customers can help themselves #SimpleFix). The Waitress and helping server would disappear at times but over all Service was on point. Decor/Ambiance: (4 out of 5 Stars) First thing that out to me when I walked in was CLEAN. Very Cool Ambiance nice mix between simple and slightly upscale. Good date spot or place to celebrate a birthday or anniversary etc.. The atmosphere is very relaxing as people started to come in the noise started to rise overall not too bad though. A decent space gap between tables to have intimate private conversations when speaking in a regular tone so you don't feel crowded and have the ELBOW ROOM you need (In my Ludacris Rapping Voice). They have a ton of options on the menu and Vegetarian option as well (I recommend the "Vegetable Ramen" Pan Fried Very Good when I tried some of my friends order) Dont laugh you MUST ORDER the Edamame's YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO the best EDAMAME's EVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR (In My Valley Girl Voice) they were in some type of addictive buttery flavored seasoning that was ADDICTIVE. Negatives: The Soy Sauce was very strong in a negative way it was like the Sodium was trying to have a fight with your mouth. So do not have Soy Sauce with your Sushi because it will ruin each bite to where you won't enjoy the sushi as much. It might work for some but I advise testing a little dab before going all in with the Sushi LOL, The Entree portions were a just a tad smaller than what i thought they should be for the prices. The food was good no doubt but the Quantity vs Cost/Quality ratio was just slightly below satisfaction level. EXHIBIT A (Please see my pic of the Miso Glazed Sea bass entree and tell me if you would pay $24.00 for that lol). Parking can be annoying because of the metered parking on a busy street. I recommend coming after 6pm so you don't have to worry about finding a spot and worrying about a parking meter. Overall I love this place just some little things nothing major to clean up. I have been coming here since they first opened and I have eaten a majority of the menu and have not been disappointed. The sushi is fresh and expertly prepared. The specials are great indulgences that are made with hard to find ingredients so take advantage of trying them. The roasted duck confit, pan seared scallops, braised lamb shank, and hot stone Angus steak are among my favorite entrees when I am not in a sushi mood. But make sure you save room for dessert. The talented chefs have also crafted mouth watering desserts that are made in house. The brown sugar ice cream, black sesame ice cream, mango mousse, mango sorbet, and yuzu sorbet will leave your sweet tooth satisfied and wanting more. Not only will the delicious food make you want to come back, but the staff will too. Everyone is very friendly and attentive to all the customers even though it can be packed. Pretty solid sushi here. There is quite a bit of choices and all hit the mark for the most part but the spicy crispy salmon roll was neither crispy or spicy and this was a special roll so thats kind of a downer. The peanut sauced dumplings were really good and kind of unique so that was a treat. The seaweed salad was big and had a nice presentation so if you like this you shouldn't be disappointed here. I'm noticing some Asian cuisine spots have wood chopsticks and other have the reusable black ones which I prefer. Here at Wabi Sabi they have the latter and along with this the ambience seems kind of upscale but not enough to scare you into upping your attire. Solid sushi spot in Bloomfield. Solid 4 stars. We ordered the Kamikaze, Godzilla, Meteor and Volcano rolls for dinner for 2 pp. the rolls were $20 and up. We haven't been to the restaurant for almost 2 years. It was not bad before. But when the sushi came, presentation was nice, but the rice, which is the MOST important part of sushi was very mushy. The Volcsno roll was fried and the batter was thick, greasy and in tasty. I walked in right before closing and was greeted by Sue. But in fairness, there were only a few ramen options versus an endless array of sushi options. The craisin bread pudding and sesame ice cream were delicious and paired very well together. Overall, my only knock besides on the ramen is on the overly lengthy and somewhat confusing menu. This place, previously Mes Reves, was a French-Vietnamese restaurant. Now it's French-Japanese and some of the entrees from the previous ownership appear to have remained on the menu. So did this place really re-brand itself or are they under new ownership? Spend $90 per person for tasting menu, i believe for the same quality n quantity of food, it will be over $200 in Manhattan. Toro n Kobe Beef is the same quality as Nobu. Don't need to go to Nobu or Morimoto, go to Wabisabi. This place is a treasure hidden in Bloomfield. Amazing Sushi quality, 5 stars quality for Kitchen dishes, must try their dessert.
