Our new favorite hotel in Austin, period. if you're looking for a nice, quaint hotel in downtown ATX, look no further. Despite its size, it has the feel of a boutique hotel. No crowd. No wait. The valet service, albeit pricey at $60 per night, is by far the best we've experienced anywhere. Two valet attendants helped us at vehicle dropoff and four (yep quatro!) at pickup. The staff everywhere are sharp and professional. We received a complimentary pour of Prosecco at check-in. We got a corner room with lots of windows and a great view. Although small, it was ample. The room is gorgeously appointed with outlets and amenities galore. Plenty of closet space. Bath area is uber modern and clean. The king-size bed was comfy and the pillows were great. read more

W Austin: A Clinic in How to Alienate Guests The W Austin is proof that a hotel can get almost everything technically right--nice lobby, efficient valet, slick branding--and still fail so completely at the basics of hospitality that the entire experience becomes laughable, if not infuriating. The trouble began with something as trivial as receiving non-functional room keys at check-in, which on its own would barely register as an inconvenience. But the hotel's response turned it into a slow-motion train wreck. What followed was 40 minutes of being effectively locked in my room, trapped by the staff's apathy and empty promises. Here's the play-by-play: Arrive at my room, keys don't work. There happens to be a staff member right there who verifies my identity, lets me into the room, and promises new keys will "come right up." Twenty minutes pass. Nothing. I call the front desk. "The ambassador is on his way." Ten minutes later, still nothing. I call again. Same line. When I point out they already told me this, I get a smug correction: "No, I said he was going to be on his way soon." At 40 minutes, the so-called "ambassador" arrives. No apology. No explanation. Just says, "Here are your keys," and leaves, as if basic courtesy is somehow optional at the W. By this point, I'd already wasted enough time to file a corporate complaint. Corporate, naturally, was worse than useless--an endless hold line, "We are experiencing higher than usual call volumes" (no s**t, Sherlock), an auto-generated "we value your feedback" email, followed the next morning by a vague suggestion to speak with "leadership staff." No names, no phone numbers, no email addresses, no effort (see pictures). I responded almost immediately to that email, requesting that "leadership staff" contact me. The punchline? Over a full day after I'd checked out, I received an email from Brian Leibel, Director of Welcome Office & In-Room Dining at the hotel. Bland, perfunctory, and calculatedly late. The cowardice is almost impressive: waiting until the guest has left ensures there's no chance of an awkward face-to-face, no risk of accountability, and of course, no possibility of offering a gesture of goodwill during the stay (see pictures). Remember, I was booked with a group that also rented out the second floor conference area; they knew exactly where I'd be all day Tuesday and Wednesday morning. This is hospitality stripped of its humanity--transactional, evasive, and contemptuous of the very customers it pretends to serve. The irony is that this entire disaster could have been neutralized by the smallest flicker of effort: a timely apology, a handshake, a token credit of Bonvoy points. Instead, the W Austin chose stonewalling, smug deflection, and hiding behind email. If Marriott's Bonvoy brand is supposed to stand for loyalty, let me translate: it actually means, "We got your money. Bon voyage." For my part, I'll take my business--and my company's events--elsewhere. And if you're a Bonvoy member, I'd suggest you do the same, there are plenty of other Marriott properties in the area (see pictures). The W Austin has made it abundantly clear: you are not a guest. Loved this hotel. They just finished a remodel in October of '24 and were still doing some construction in the lobby as of December. Still the room was really great. The style of everything was on point, the lighting, the couch, the rug, the closet. It all went really well together around a daring sort of teal color. Some standouts. Nespresso machine is always clutch. The bar end of the console, that lights up was a nice touch. Even with a cocktail beaker and spoon, just fun to have. The bath robe was luxuriously soft, maybe the nicest I've felt. Lights under the bed that light up by motion when you step out of the bed are also a subtle plus. Bathroom was spacious. The vertical blue shower tiles were gorgeous. The toilet separated by its own door is a nice touch for sharing the bathroom. The bed was luxuriously soft and same for pillows. The restaurant looked great though I didn't get to try this time. The bar and lounge were expansive with comfy furniture. Love when this space is joined together and open like this. There's a secret bar behind the lobby bar called the blue room. A cool vibe though less loungy, not as warm and inviting. Nice cocktails though with some top shelf alcohol. There's a lot of bathrooms back there too which is always good to have. It's in a good location in downtown austin, I found it to be sort of in the middle of everything I wanted to go see and do. Great walkability. Overall will definitely be my first consideration to stay next time I return to Austin. read more

I stay in Austin most weeks usually in the Marriott or Otis but decided to try the W this time! It was okay but I won't return as there was nothing I cared for on the property besides the nice smelling shower gel! Hotel is under construction- you have to take the elevator to the third floor to check in and check in was not particularly friendly - same can be said for Valet. Hotel has a fun modern vibe and the room is huge for Austin with a cool modern bathroom and decor but it had a weird overpowering smell like mothballs ! Some reviews mentioned a signature jasmine smell so maybe this was supposed to be it but it was bad and appeared to get worse when the AC was on - it made for a miserable stay it was that bad. Room was clean, bed not very comfy standard view of downtown. Room was pretty quiet and hotel felt very deserted! Ordered room service - salad with salmon was good, hummus was awful the bread it came with was hard, oily and inedible! Left most of my meal. It was okay but for the price there are way better hotels downtown - maybe it will get better after the construction is through! read more

I recently stayed at the hotel and it was just ok. The hotel is being remodeled so the front of the hotel is mostly blocked off and they have a temporary restaurant on the 2nd floor in the hallway. My check-in was fine and my room was nice. Definitely can feel that the hotel needs a refresh though. Paint and wallpaper in the hallways were beat up. I did go to the restaurant for lunch one day. I ordered a salad and they ended up bringing me the wrong one. But I ate it anyway as it was my 2nd choice. I got there in between staff breaks so they were not as attentive as they could have been. I had the ARUGULA + BABY SPINACH salad: Cherry tomato, avocado, pecorino, lemon vinaigrette, balsamic honey reduction. I added shrimp. The salad was tasty and I really liked the shrimp. The hotel did not have a store but they were very nice and gave me a can of soda one morning when I asked if I could buy one somewhere. I did eat some chocolate covered almonds from the mini bar which I told the hotel about when I checked out. Over $17 for a little pack of chocolate almonds. That is ridiculous. Then the hotel charged me again for them, plus some sort of oxygen thing I did not use, after the cleaning staff cleaned my room. They did take that charge off my bill. So hopefully things will improve when the remodel is done as its in a great location. read more

I have mixed emotions writing this review. The staff at the hotel and spa are 5 star. The room however was a little disappointing. We got a 1 bedroom suite which I expected to be incredible but sadly it was not. The mini fridge was old and janky and never wanted to shut properly. The bed was actually lumpy. I woke up sore! The shower/tub combo looked amazing but also disappointing. There was a knob/button that kept popping off. I had to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night and the light turned on automatically. Like bright light. I'm sure there was a way to make this not happen but at the time I wasn't expecting it to turn on so bright at 3am. The staff is truly the only reason for my 4 stars. The hotel and room are pretty don't get me wrong but overall disappointed in our room for the price that you pay. I expected luxury with our suite and I just didn't feel like it delivered. I've stayed at many W hotels over the years and generally enjoy the brand, but my recent stay at the W Austin was disappointing from start to finish. When I first checked in, I had dinner plans and left immediately after dropping my bags. Upon returning later that evening, I noticed visible shoe prints on both the bathroom floor and the wood floors in the room -- not what you expect from a freshly cleaned room. As I went to bed, I detected a funky smell in the bedding. To their credit, housekeeping did change out all the linens the next day as requested, but they didn't properly clean the room afterward -- only swapped out towels and did a light surface clean. We also tried the newly remodeled Serenade restaurant for breakfast. The experience was poor: * We waited 25 minutes for food in a nearly empty dining room. * My wife's cheeseburger was overcooked and missing the bacon she ordered. * My breakfast was similarly subpar: overcooked eggs, soggy bacon, and cold potatoes. * The only saving grace was the fruit plate. Service was equally lacking -- despite the restaurant being nearly empty, we received no coffee or water refills, and the server disappeared entirely. We had to physically get up and find someone just to pay the bill. I gave the W Austin a try after its recent remodel but won't be returning. I'll stick with the JW Marriott up the street where the service and cleanliness consistently meet expectations. It's a shame, as I typically prioritize staying at W properties when available, but this visit missed the mark on too many fronts. read more

The scent of a hotel automatically changes my mood during my trips. The W has that soft (jasmine?) smell throughout the hotel which makes me so happy. Hubs and I stayed in the King Suite which was super roomy and a nice change from our last few hotels (tiny rooms in New York and Europe). Some things worth mentioning: + spacious room + friendly front desk staff and room service for cleaning and in room dining. They're all genuinely happy and it shows throughout the hotel. + they change their elevator mats from good morning, good afternoon, to too evening. I love it! + they offer robes (but no slippers). + the hotel is under construction but has their restaurant on the 2nd floor which offers a delicious Chicken Caesar Salad! + the hotel is located in a walkable area. My go-to coffee shop and restaurants were all walking distance to the W. I think the only downside is the construction taking place so the exterior isn't the prettiest but it's not like it changes anything with my room. I would have also preferred a branded body wash/shampoo but I luckily had my own travel-sized goodies with me. Aside from that, I was very pleased with my stay and would definitely consider staying at the W again. read more

Marjan and I visited the W this past weekend, not having returned for some 7 years previous. The transformation of our favorite boutique hotel is remarkable. The hotel is found on Lavaca Street, conveniently located proximate to watering holes, restaurants and shopping. On arrival, valet staff were prompt, registering our car, bell staff immediately offering help with luggage. Entering, the W is not as we remembered. Over the past year the hotel has undergone major renovation, and scanning the area, registration, bar and restaurant assume a gleaming new look. The registration staff were more than polite and welcoming, and immediately attentive. One feature new to us: a phone app that serves as key to our suite! Entering our room, here friends is a description that meets the eye. Previously, the very pleasing decor featured colors and decor elements that some could say assumed, almost whimsy. Images of rock stars had covered the walls, the color schemes bright, pleasing. Now however, entirety of the suite is of a more elegant decor, with very upscale furnishings, lighting, carpeting and wall art. Left of the entrance is found a writing desk, one end topped with beverage service glasses, the other with our desired Nespresso coffee pot. The living room features stylish chair and floor lamp, modern curved sofa with interesting cushions, and area rug of pleasing texture, dimension and color, large flat screen television. The bathroom features large tub, glass enclosed shower and gleaming chrome faucets and rainfall shower head. The lighting over the basin perfectly placed below, above and around the large mirror, the mirror completely covering the wall. Separate water closet as one would prefer, the lighting motion activated. The king bed was raised on a small pedestal, again with contemporary lighting left and right of the headboard. Our particular suite featured large windows on corner, facing north and west, giving a remarkable view of the scrapers surrounding the area, and the lake area below. Wow! Also within, stylish chair...yellow...and wall mounted flat screen. Our overall impression: major investment in quality finish, with very high end furnishings throughout. Marjan and I favor very modern, contemporary as opposed to more traditional, so for our taste, we consider the reborn W certainly among the top 3 hotels that we visited...ever. We spied the exercise room, well equipped, and while we dined and breakfasted elsewhere with friends, did not experience the restaurant nor room service of the W. But, in truth, given the significant investment we witnessed, we cannot imagine that food service would be less than exceptional. Would we recommend the W Austin? Definitely! The W is located in downtown Austin two blocks from the lake in a newly developed area. After booking an impromptu and long overdue trip I booked a fabulous corner queen room. Check in was easy breezy and I was offered champagne or water. As a non drinker the choice was clear. My room on the 12th floor had two corner windows with sweeping views of the bustling and expanding downtown Austin area. Features such as single point lighting, magnetized bedside charging, labeled work desk charging, Nespresso espresso machine, and clothing steamer were -appreciated. I've discovered in my 400 plus day run streak that running is the best way to explore any new area. My run around Austin was perfect even though my Apple Maps kept leading me astray. I digress... The W also has a fabulous AWAY spa, workout area, and outdoor pool. The hotel is undergoing renovations but this wasn't really felt in any way. The restaurant has moved to the 2nd floor and has healthy tasty food. The entry lobby bar area has some great art on display. Thanks to all the great staff who were inviting and helpful. Awful! We arrive to a #2 in our bathroom w a toilet that didn't flush. Management did nothing but offer us the same room. The same evening the lights shut off in the bathroom while showering. We left specific instructions that my husband had a sever down allergy (down pillow etc) this was completely ignored and my husband spent the entire night coughing and choking and had to sleep on the couch. Management did nothing but offer us a round of free drinks. Never again staying here. Linens and towels were below sub par and the staff was blah... other than the esthetic being beautiful, everything else was bad. Some form of construction has been going on at the hotel this entire year. I was in town on a business trip and chose this hotel due to its close proximity to the office because I'm directionally challenged. However, it was definitely in a prime location and walking distance to so many great places in Austin. The hotel is also next door to the Austin City Limits music venue so it may be a little louder than you'd expect. Whoever does the branding/marketing for W Hotels deserves all of the gold stars! Each location that I've stayed at has been so chic and the W Austin didn't disappoint in terms of decor! I stayed in a Wonderful Room (thank you to my employer for the corporate rate!) and it was more than spacious! The bathroom was filled with the basic amenities (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, soap, lotion) and you have the option of ordering additional items (shower cap, toothbrush + toothpaste, extra towels, etc.) through the Bonvoy app. The bed was super comfortable as the pillows were plush and the sheets were soft. There were ample outlets throughout the rooms as well. There are also complimentary water bottles provided as well. Check-in was friendly and swift and I had no issues checking out through my app. If you have the time to workout, the gym is so worth checking out! There are plenty of cardio machines, Peloton bikes, weights (racked and free weights), and a yoga/pilates room with plenty of space for other workouts/stretching. It's also open 24/7. The locker room, shared with the spa, was also clean and well kept. read more

If i remember correctly, you can order a maximum of two breakfasts and coffee per day. I hosted my birthday party this year at the W Austin pool and truly had the best time ever!!! Here are the things I LOVED: - I coordinated my event with the Marketing Manager, Julia, and she was incredible to work with: quick response time, professional, and welcoming. I got to meet her in person as well and she was very kind and seemed genuinely excited to have my event at their property! - Was greeted upon arrival by the Pool Deck Manager (he could have a different title), Jorge, who made sure my event ran smoothly and he was super attentive to my group's needs. The event went perfectly thanks to him!! - The pool deck and pool itself were SUPER clean. Lots of towels and staff taking care of the space. And it's literally stunning. Plenty of cabanas with shade, a walk up bar, and lots of additional seating. - DJ played amazing music and let me request songs (which I know some DJs hate, but it was my birthday so it made it extra special hearing my favorite songs!) - The servers were so sweet and helpful! They all had wonderful energy and were quick to take my guests' orders and bring their drinks/food back to them as efficiently as possible. Other notes: - Drinks are pricey, but that's standard for a downtown hotel in any city - Valet parking available - Yummy food on the menu - I also stayed in one of their suites and it was incredible with gorgeousss city views! They evicted 100++ bats on the coldest day of the year from a laundry facility or somewhere in the hotel on the COLDEST day of the year 2/14/2025. This is certain death for bats. Austin is the bat capital of the United States and is a major tourist attraction for the bats that live under the bridge over the lake. There could've been a much easier way to solve this problem by calling and supporting a bat rescue to intervene. Fortunately, one rushed to get the bats I guess off the street to save them. They have no financial support. And the W claims to be an ecological friendly, environmental type of hotel? BS. Take your compassion for animals, money for vacation and stay at another hotel...then take a walk across the bridge at sunset to watch the beautiful skypuppies take off at night-it's so cool! read more

If I could give it zero I would. Waited 10 minutes with no other guests for valet. Drop off was dark and unmarked. Front desk was snotty to me when I indicated reservation was in my husband's name. She dismissed me like a 5 yr old. Very moody vibe - lighting is very low. Room is old. Have to leave the light switch my the door on in order to have any lights on in the room. This means the entry light is on all the time or you walk around in the dark since none of the other lights work. There are no outlets on either side of the bed. Be side had a 2 plug strip so had to run a chord under the pillows to use medical device. Needless to say there's no place near the beds to charge any devices. Large desk but only 1 outlet under the desk to plug in anything. Have t use a charger that plugs into an electrical outlet. No USB. Instead there's little pieces of paper 1x1 Note to Self and pens in numerous places with note holders - what???? Stupid. Bathroom floor was very slippery and using a walk in shower puts water everywhere in the bathroom. No fitted sheet so sheets come off the mattress as soon as you sit on it. Just bad. The granddaddy of Austin modern chic hotels where out in front seems to always be an exotic car parking lot. This property is now part of the Marriott family and part of their Luxury class of hotels. The lobby and bar lounge is contemporary modern with first class service. We had great tasting drinks here and seems to a routine every time we are downtown. The staff is very professional and polite. The Trace restaurant here is very good and has patio seating. Outside appended to this hotel is the Austin City Limits music venue and Starbucks Reserve. Both places should be on your list to checkout. This hotel since completion has had competition springing up around it but still a place attracting young travelers who either love the great downtown location and/or pool party scene. read more

I love this style of hotel and upon arrival was initially excited. Suzanne (really wonderful) took her time to show me around, tell me all about the exciting things the hotel offered and what to expect. I was told the hotel will undergo a full renovation. I now know it is much needed. Before arrival I was emailed by the hotel informing me the pool and pool deck would be closed for the duration of my stay. I was bummed but knew I likely would not be swimming so no biggie. I was told I could use a nearby hotel if needed. When I arrived in my room, I could tell it was in need of a refresh as it was dated. One odd thing I noticed is there was no dresser for my clothes. Only a very small closet. One item I did really love was the full size toiletries that were of great quality. I saw a note addressed to me that stated there would likely be people working out of my window (12th floor) and to close my blinds for privacy. What a bummer. Again, being in Property Management I didn't mention it because sometimes the hotel has no other option. The major problem that was a kicker is when we arrived back at our hotel late evening we were unable to access our room for two hours. The elevators were completely down and apparently no stairs went to that location. That makes absolutely no sense to me. There should always be an emergency exit. How is that possible? The manager on duty did her absolute best to accommodate us by us providing food and drinks but unacceptable. We had already booked a spa appointment for two one hour massages the next morning. I woke up to a text informing me there was a mainline break in the spa and my appointment was cancelled. Not sure much else could go wrong on a three night stay. The manager did give me a call and offer me points for the inconvenience and apologized. I was offered 15k Marriott points. Me not knowing what that equated to, I accepted. Upon further review that is not even 1 night stay where I am from. I'm actually a bit disappointed in this offering and considering calling the manager back. This was not a cheap hotel and for the price I expected more. Pros: Suzanne and the bar staff were so enjoyable $32 credit for breakfast daily at the attached restaurant. Delicious food. I'm having a hard time finding something positive to start this review with. Okay, the staff who works at the pool are amazing! They are the gold stars of this hotel! This hotel is filthy. Stains on the carpet everywhere. The water coming from the sink smells like sewer water. The parts of the curtains that should be white are tinged in yellow and brown. It is disgusting. I had my Do Not Disturb on my door while I was in my room taking a shower... as I'm getting out of the shower I hear this BAM! Someone is coming in my room! WHAT DONT YOU UNDERSTAND ABOUT DO NOT DISTURB??????? That is such a huge violation! I call down to Whatever-Whenever about someone coming in my room and they could have cared less. read more

This location just went through a renovation. The lights they installed have a whistling noise. That they are aware of. They said they have to switch out a piece etc. but why have the rooms for service. Then the air wont go past 71. There is no engineer on site at night. I called 4 times for an engineer he never came. Go to the jw marriott. This is not luxury at all!! The gym is outdated and so is the spa. The manager said he would yell at the engineer for not coming, but no accommodations for me being inconvenienced. Totally unprofessional read more

I stayed here for two nights with my husband and 2 dogs. The location is great as it is away from the busyness of 6th Street but close enough for a nice walk there. It is also near the bridges that connect to South Congress and thus a great walk to stroll on along the river. Parking is valet only which is a bit annoying to me but was pleasantly happy when I found out you can text valet services so they can have your car out and ready for you with no wait! The type of room we stayed in was their "Fabulous Room" and had a queen bed, lounge chair, and stand up shower. The room to me was spacious and clean (especially with 2 dogs). The only negative about the room was the lack of a refrigerator. We slept in late the first night but luckily they still serviced our room in the afternoon. Another bonus is their 24 hour room service- we ordered burgers late night and they were tasty, although they did not make them to order (ours were overcooked). The most positive part of our stay here was that the hotel is extremely dog friendly. They let you bring max 2 dogs up to 60 pounds. The dog fee is a flat $100 per stay plus an additional fee of $25 per night. The hotel provided each of my dogs (to rent free of charge) with a large dog bed and they also have dog bowls- both available upon request. They also gave our dogs a complimentary gift box which included treats and a toy. There is a park about 3 blocks away for the dogs to do their business. I would highly recommend this place if you're looking for a dog friendly hotel in Austin! Overall, we had a great stay here and wouldn't hesitate coming back. Context: This is a W and if this was a Hampton Inn, mmmboy it would be five stars but alas, this is a luxury brand of Marriott. So the hotel front doors are very heavy and glass, they swing open with quite of bit of momentum and I have my bag and backpack for my 5 day journey through the large state of TX. There were a number of valet's hanging around talking who did not attempt to go for the door - thank you. But if I did not have eagle like reflexes, that door would have shattered. Like Aunt Marge, I have a real firm grip. The elevators, there are three and one was functioning. Worse, I saw a person moving food on the lift and he said all of the service lifts were down too. So that wasn't good to hear. I was on the 8th floor. So about that, I decided to take the stairs and that was an experience. I got to either 4 or 5 and then you go to another stairway down a corridor and then to another stairway. I needed to go to two and that wasn't going to happen. So I went down to one and you cannot exit. Additionally, it seems these doors all lock which is great but 1) they were all propped open or 2) what if you didn't want or couldn't take the lifts? The room was nice, it looked at a construction site but you could not hear it. There was a shelf right as you enter that has glasses on it. There are a lot of mirrors in the hallway and in the room. The one in the room freaked me out because it is just leaning so I was afraid that one wrong move could cause catastrophe. Otherwise, it is a fine unit. I would not return, it was almost $400 a night and there are many other places to try. read more

Update: After speaking with the general manager I'm updating this review to 4/5 stars. While I can't give the visit a perfect score, the manager did make a concerted effort to recover my experience and make things right. -------- Checked in today. Room smells like it had water damage at some point that's been repaired but not completely eliminated. The hotel is undergoing construction. So you have to take the elevator to the third floor, walk a bunch, and then take another elevator every time you want to come or go. And if you have status, don't expect to get your upgrades. First I was told there weren't any available. But upon further discussion, they revealed I won't get one because I already booked a decent room. And the manager was pretty dismissive about it.
