Loved discovering these magical confections years ago in Portland. Scrolling through the gram, it was exciting to see a shop eventually opened in L.A. What's more? If you join their Fan Club, you'll receive a coupon for a free Cherry Popper. Oddly enough, inside, this sweet circle is filled with lime cream! Not my fave, but hey, I'm not a local Voodoo virgin anymore. Being a fan has its benefits - free doughnuts throughout the year! If you're not adventurous, it introduces you to kooky ones you might not ordinarily try: Old Dirty Bastards, Oh Captain, My Captain, Marshal Mathers. You get the drill. I'm a Maple Bar gal, but on National Donut Day (another freebie), I expanded my horizons with a Maple and Bacon Bar, which I devoured before I remembered to photograph it. Wow! It was huge, filling, and delicious. Real bacon, too! Not a meat eater? Vegan options are available. Too bad there's no seating at this location. At least there's free parking behind their spellbinding pink building on the corner of Melrose and La Brea. I passed by this location of Voodoo Doughnut on my to an event earlier this week and decided I would visit on my way home later in the evening. I had no idea this location existed until now, but glad to have happened upon it because it's work to visit Citywalk lol. Not gonna lie, the choices of doughnuts are overwhelming. I settled on a Churro Cheesecake doughnut and the Mango doughnut. I fully admit I probably should've checked the bag before heading out, but when I got home I realized instead of mango I got a raspberry donut instead! Argh! The churro cheesecake donut was really good, great balance of cinnamon sugar and cheesecake tang. The raspberry donut was ok, nothing terribly interesting about it. Part of that might have been my disappointment at not getting my mango donut though. Look forward to trying other flavors in the future! read more

Popped into Voodoo Doughnuts on my day off from most things and finally go to take in everyone's favorite pink corner in Hollywood on Melrose Avenue/La Brea Avenue where this newest Voodoo reside neighborhood to the legendary Pink's Hot Dogs. Great store front, wall art outside as well as in and all the decadence in the form of doughnuts. The vegan friendly options are plentiful with loads of classic style as well some of which are the same ;) like the Apple Fritter. Big fan of the Raised Glaze, ODB (Old Dirty Bastard), Maple Bar and others. Service at this location is warm, sunny and personable. It can get busy especially in the early AM and sometimes at late night. Open until 3am daily! Parking is where you can find it, though they do have some of their own parking behind the main entrance with access frok either street. V.Doughnuts also does mobile pick up and 3rd party delivery. We were at Pink's and I noticed Voodoo donuts next door. I didn't know they had a SoCal location and wanted to try them after all the hype I had seen in years prior about their Portland startup. I've tried my share of donuts over the years and these did not disappoint. The maple bar with bacon was excellent. The chocolate on the raised donut was perfect. My wife enjoyed her favorite, plain glazed. We've been back for a second visit on our way back from Canters deli and I can easily say that I am hooked on Voodoo Donuts. read more

I'll give this donut spot a five because I loved Old Dirty Bastard. Initially I wasn't sure how the donuts would taste but I really enjoyed what I had. It was soft, moist, and so chocolaty addictive! On the hunt for a good apple fritter donut. This place is located on the corner next to Pinks hot dog, the building itself is PINK, you can't miss it. Plenty of parking, before stepping into the place you can see the menu of the difference donuts. The apple fritter is HUGE, so sad that I couldn't find any apples in my donut. So sad! Old fashion donut was dry and not moist. The churro cheesecake donut was good and I think the cheesecake helped it from being dry. The oreo donut was also dry. Blueberry cake donut, that one was actually moist and flavorful. Overall, I probably won't be coming back to get donuts here. 2/5 were good donut. read more

Both were so delicious and filling with the perfect amount of chocolate! Stopped by and the room was very welcoming. Staff was awesome and knowledgeable. They were friendly and willing to give me their personal recommendations. The vibe inside is a chill donut shop. Very clean and well maintained. The donuts were pretty good. The icing is a little sweet for my taste. Almost like a fondant type of texture which isn't my favorite. Recently found myself in LA and wanted to go to Pinks. When we were done with lunch, we saw Voodoo and decided to stop in. There was a line with a few people ahead of us and just one gentleman working the counter. We ordered a few of the voodoo doll donuts as well as the Memphis and the strawberry donuts. The voodoo donut was very good and this was recommended to me by my sister. I like the raspberry filling and that it isn't too sweet like a pie filling. Pink building on the corner of Melrose--you guessed it, Voodoo doughnuts. I first had their donuts when in Portland, perhaps like most, and I was so happy that they are making their way a little further down south. I was greeted upon entering and hopped in line. I ordered the Vegan Belgian cream and Vegan Raised Glaze. The Belgium cream donut was good, but a little on the sweet side; the raised glaze was absolutely delicious. It rekindled fond memories both the donuts and the shop in Portland. It was clean inside of the establishment and the service was great. Tried it in another state on one of my travels and my enthusiasm is about the same at each lol. I've tried a few different ones like the Homer, the dirt, this time I tried strawberry shortcake which was one I liked a little bit more and they had a funny Pac-Man one called "cok n ballz" which I got for the meme factor of surprising my friends with this "funny shaped" donut. Donuts here are like $6+ for the specialty donuts and no disrespect the donut shop by my house with their $7 donuts though a little more costly are way more impressive. Years ago, I attended a party where someone brought a box of VooDoo Doughnuts. I remember trying the signature VooDoo Doll doughnut. Not sure who I was mad at, but I'm sure they felt it when I bit their head off. LOL! Based on the name most people think this place originated in New Orleans. However, it was founded in Portland, OR by two friends - Kenneth "Cat Daddy" Pogson & Tres Shannon. VooDoo offers traditional and unconventional flavors sporting clever names (like Old Dirty Bastard) and creative toppings. Their repertoire includes 40 artisan creations and 10 vegan options. I finally had the opportunity to check out the new location on Melrose. The first thing I noticed was the visually appealing décor and the vast selection of tempting doughnuts on display in the carousel case. The young man behind the counter was very friendly. I asked for a Raised Glaze for my nephew and a Churro Cheesecake for me. Both were yeast raised and they were thick, fluffy, & chewy. The glaze was sweeter than I expected but better than what you get at a regular ole donut shop. The Churro Cheesecake was coated in cinnamon sugar topped with dollops of creamy cheesecake and a caramel drizzle. There was also some cheesecake filling inside. It was exceptionally yummy! It was very filling, so I saved the rest for the next day. Next time I'm in the area I will try some other flavors because "Good things come in pink boxes." read more

I tried: -- buttermilk bar: nothing will ever compare to Randy's Donut's version, this one included. Not enough sugary, crystallized glaze, & the overall taste wasn't as good. -- butterfingering: I mean, that name is just so wild; major points for that, alone. I was waiting for an order a block or so away, so I decided to wander on over. Normally it doesn't take much for me when it comes to doughnuts, so this was a no-brainer. There was a couple of people ahead of me which was good since I wanted to take a look at what they had to offer. I do have to say that the service here was great; helpful and super-friendly which is commendable in this part of town, much less town in general. They seemed happy to be there which is a rarity. Sadly, I wasn't too impressed with the product. I guess too much basic doughnuts in my life have screwed me when it comes to tasting real doughnuts, and I know a lot of people were thrilled when Voodoo came to this side of town so they wouldn't have to go to Universal anymore. I had a chocolate cake and a chocolate ring which I know aren't the most exciting choices, but I figure if I enjoy the basic, I'll branch off to the Grape Ape, etc. Maybe I am growing away from doughnuts which is devastating, but I am glad I tried this place. I honestly don't even really LIKE doughnuts... but these are a game changer. We get 'em delivered (Postmates). At first I assumed they were going to be just another gimmicky place with so-so pastries. So wrong. Sure, they're gimmicky but these doughnuts are seriously fresh, with super creative fillings and toppings. The chocolate that covers the Portland Cream, the Voodoo Doll and others is lush and definitely not an afterthought. The fillings don't taste like the familiar "goo" that you'll find inside most doughnuts. The Apple Fritter is perfection, although not always available, so grab one if you see it. My rating distribution for donut joints in Los Angeles has been consistently high-rated . Why? Los Angeles has some bomb ass donuts . Call it based, but my metric boils down to this: À good donut need not any toppings -- or very little. I ordered the regular glazed donut, and one glazed donut with sprinkly frosty top with a cherry filling. The regular glaze was moist, creamy the way a man likes it! First of all, I want to remind everyone about the concepts that make life worthwhile, for just a minute: happiness, healthiness, accessibility, and, well, just plain fun. For me, Voodoo Doughnuts ticks all the boxes. Of course there are doughnuts elsewhere. In fact, I care so little about the "where" when I need a doughnut fix that I will take one from the supermarket, in a box, stale and tasteless. So, when I tell you that I am delighted with Voodoo, thrilled to have found them, that they bring me joy, it is because, unless I want to be 600 pounds, I have to pick my doughnut shopping very carefully and cautiously. Let's step back a minute. I discovered Voodoo Doughnuts at Universal City Walk (see my reviews from October of 2024 on this) and was immediately struck by its novelty, the Mardi Gras colors, the dark humor vibe, the Goth implications and the quality of the doughnuts themselves. I don't expect these to be Michelin Star products and wouldn't want them if they were. For crying out loud, a doughnut is street stuff, hardy, fried to the point of dangerous, sugary, decadence in endless combos of flavor, style, and texture. I went to professional baking school. Doughnuts must be deep fried. Period, end of story. Nothing else is a doughnut. So, let's put the sugar-fat-salt scoldings aside. I get a doughnut to satisfy a craving for hedonism. Since I am pretty disciplined in most things, this is an outlet, this lets some air out of the over-filled balloon that is life these days. Now, it is a hassle to go to Universal City Walk for any reason, much less to get a quirky confection. Imagine how wonderful it is that they opened one on Melrose, with insane long hours, and parking, in a cute, murky-girlie pink building, and filled it with unbelievably cheerful and friendly people like Wavi G.! Imagine! If I had room (body and fridge, that is) for dozens of these little mouth-toys, I would have gotten one of every single one they had. Instead, we controlled ourselves and made the limit 6; these are large and we split them so we wouldn't feel overly guilty. We got the: Raised Maple Bar, Voodoo Doll, Viscous Hibiscus, Homer, Grape Ape, Blueberry Cake. (Yelp is not letting me upload my picture of the box contents yet, for some reason -- stay tuned.) These doughnuts do not disappoint. They are unique (love that about them!), they make us squeal with laughter at the shapes, concepts, toppings, and flavors. They are satisfying without giving me that awful aftertaste of lard or unhealthy fats that, as a lifelong vegetarian and somewhat health nut, I can detect immediately on first bite with some fried goods. Nope, they go down easy, don't stir up my stomach, and I slept like a baby afterward, despite eating the Voodoo Doll at 9 pm. Now, if they would only put one near my house, I promise my higher self, I will walk there and back to make up for being so self-satisfying. Run, don't walk. You won't be sorry. read more

Got the vegan raised glaze and vegan maple bar doughnuts. Both were raised donuts that were a bit on the oily side, but made up for it in its softness and pillowy-ness. Just stopped by this legendary donut shop, part of a chain out of Portland, because my friend loves their "grape ape" donut (it tastes like grape candy and Welch's grape juice). Saw their limited edition Halloween donut collection which is definitely worth a trip. My favorite donut here is the "school daze" peanut butter and jelly donut but right now they have a special "PEANUT BUTTER POLTERGEIST" donut just for Halloween season. Free Parking on the side and the merchandise and donut boxes are so cute. One thing I really appreciate is the service because they are so patient even if there's a line and if you're trying to pick a donut they'll gladly give advice and help you out. Decor is so cute and definitely Instagram worthy. If you have a friend from out of town that loves donuts and you want to surprise them, this is a great stop! This is such a fun donut shop! The energy is so fun and welcoming. It's just a counter where you order to go but there is a big observation window so you can see all the donut making magic! If you ask them nicely, they might write on your donut for you! All of the donuts were so fresh and soft! Some of the best quality donuts but fun flavors and shapes like other bakeries where you get donuts that taste like they are more for looking at... these are not like that! OK, let me start by saying Voodoo Doughnuts makes a fine doughnut. I went to their original location in Portland and stood in line with the rest of the tourists and enjoyed it. It's just not that special. The store vibes are great--it's what they're known for. The doughnuts are creative; they're the Ben & Jerry's of doughnuts. Great. But to compete in LA you gotta be amazing, man. We got thousands of Mom & Pops that have been here since they came over from Cambodia, also doing their best to create Fruit Loops toppings and Oreo chocolate doughnuts. We got the high end overpriced chains that charge a ton to represent their product as gourmet baking and riding the matcha revolution. We got YumYum who aren't that bad at all and who I would like a lot if it weren't for my favorite, Randy's Donuts. They offer the best in taste and texture IMO, they're a great value with their size vs. price, and their selection is expansive without being frivolous or silly. I'm not gonna even mention the national chains like Dunkin' or Krispy Kreme because they're in their own category.
