I love Vom Fass. Today was my second time stopping in here and I was in search of the delicious Bear Garlic oil I had gotten last tim. They did not have this but once the very nice lady that works there knew what I wanted she was able to recommend items I would enjoy. She is so patient and kind. I enjoy the fact that she is extremely knowledgeable about the products and gave me a taste of everything I asked for, even mixing oil and vinegar together for me so I could taste the combination. She took her time explaining the bottle sizes (and a bonus, I didn't know before is that if you keep your bottle and clean them, bring them back and they will refill them with a new oil. It saves on the cost a bit because you don't have to buy new bottles) There is a very nice stock of alcohol as well here and they are all so unique. I am not a drinker so I skipped that but the selection of oils and vinegars is just as impress. They also have things like risotto, spices, chutneys, honey, chocolates and more. It is a very cute and welcoming space where you are greeted, allowed to explore and then assisted which makes for a great shopping experience. There is also a man who works the shop who I spoke with last time and I'd like to acknowledge that he is equally as friendly and knowledgeable about products and very friendly and helpful. Now I want to say here that I really feel when it comes to oil and vinegar you get the quality you pay for. Bot only does Vom Fass stock items using herbs and fruits that are in season but they are truly quality items. I am health conscious so enjoy using oil and vinegar of salads or veggie platters and Lao use flavored oils for roasting vegetables and each time I have used a Vom Fass item, I have been blown away by the taste so their products are definitely splurge worthy. Finally they host wine tastings and meal events that look fantastic and I will be signing up for some events here in the future. On the way out, the gentleman who works there came and opened the door for us and void us goodbye and safe travels. I appreciate this step and again felt not only welcomed but appreciated. read more

Definitely a hidden Gem in downtown Maplewood. I decided to stop in to see what they had to offer and I'm glad i did. They sell infused oils, Vinegars, spices,liquor, wine and spirits. The oils and Vinegars are in barrels lined up on the shelves, with labels that show pricing and a brief description. You are able to taste all that they have to offer, just reach out to staff for assistance. I saw quite a few different olive oils i wanted to purchase, but opted to go with the garlic infused olive oil. I did sample it, and it was absolutely delicious. You can definitely taste the garlic. It was almost as if i was eating a fresh baked slice of garlic bread. I'm looking forward to going back and purchasing the chili Olive oil, and the pomegranate Vinegar. The gentleman working at the time stated Vom Fass has been around since 2006. Beautiful clean layout. Plenty of parking outside and friendly staff! They offer tastings in store so be sure to check them out. Also, they are an Eco conscious store, so all their products are in reusable glass containers. This is one of those iykyk kind of places. We happened upon tickets to a wine tasting on eventbrite but what got us coming back is the owner, Anita! Vom Fass has wines, whiskeys, and vinegars, among other items, that you might not find anywhere else! Go in and try a few out. You can even buy a mini barrel and age your own whiskey. They frequently host events which is where they truly shine. Grab a buddy and go meet some new folks while trying wines from all over the world and potentially many years ago. Some events have tastings and Anita purposefully pairs the food and drinks to excite the taste buds. They were also able to easily accommodate my food allergies with advanced notice. Complimentary tastings are great! The only thing that bothered me was as I checked out, the pay screen asked if I wanted to leave a tip! My family went in here to buy olive oil and there were two employees working. As my wife was telling the friendly sales clerk what she wanted, the other employee shouted pretty aggressively at my 6 year old telling him not to touch anything (as far as we could tell, he had not touched anything). My wife was about to spend $50+ on a 500ml container of fancy olive oil but we were so shaken by the rudeness that we walked out. I'd never heard anybody talk to one of my kids like that. I get that people find kids annoying (and I find my own kids annoying plenty). And sure, sometimes you may need to redirect kids to prevent problems. But if you want people to come in and spend money you can't yell at their kids. We had been regular customers but wouldn't go back without an apology. read more

What an interesting find in Maplewood! I often read about their various events and have been wanting to stop in for awhile. The employees are super friendly and helpful, very knowledgeable about their products. If you're like me and sometimes indecisive about a purchase, they allow you to sample their products and purchase items in various sizes that are perfectly right for what you need. I love this place so much! It's a great place to go if you're looking to treat yourself, your friends, and your tastebuds. Let me start by saying the staff is SO helpful. Every time I come in I have a great experience. Last time, I asked about a white port as I was checking out, and the gentleman went to the basement to get me samples of his favorite white ports as well as suggestions for cocktails. I mean that is just excellent customer service. They offer a ton of different liquors from lemonchello to whiskey to wines to premade old fashions. They offer a variety of sizes, so it's great to stock your bar or give as a gift. Their olive oil and vinegar selection is outstanding. They have a ton of different flavors ranging from mild to strong. They staff helped me pick out the perfect bright and vibrant vinegar paired with garlic olive oil for salads. We love having Vom Fass in our neighborhood it fits in very well with the Maplewood feel. My husband and I have actually stopped buying salad dressing after trying their balsamic vinegars. OMG, so wonderful. I had just wrapped up dinner at Crow's Nest, and passed this on the way to the car. I'd never been inside. I had so much fun. They have absolutely no problem providing samples, and they'll also help you with suggestions. I was a little timid, but the guy that helped me was like, I'll give you a sample of anything you'd like. I just finished writing a review for Teavana, and this place kind of reminds of there, but the employees are helpful and informational, not badgering and nagging. They let you look for a while, and then come over. BTW, all the times I passed by, I thought they just sold fancy olive and oil and vinegar. Wrong I was. They sell infused oils (not just olive oil based), vinegars, they also have a wine section, they sell liquor (brandy, whiskey, cognac, absinthe (whew!) and others), and also infused liquors that are flavored with fruits and stuff like that. In addition, they had gift sets of prepackaged oil (great gifts for the chef on your gift list), pasta and wine accessories. And there is a variety of alcohol concentrations in the liquors, for example, Absinthe is like 50% (and that's the weak one), some with 40%, and lower ones like 15%, depending on if you're a lightweight, or if you want to drink them neat or mix them into an awesome artisan cocktail and impress your friends. What a wonderful place to shop for gift basket items. Wine, olive oil, and vinegar all make great gifts for some of my friends! The best part of this store is that they let you taste test just about everything in the store-wine included! The night I went I sampled about 4 wines and a caramel whiskey! Who knew they would even sell liquor? I was happy to find this place. They also have a punch card system For every ten items you purchase you get 1 free olive oil or vinegar! How cool is that? The service was really good and the workers all spent a ton of time explaining the items to me and letting me sample the oils and vinegar; the flavored vinegar is really good-I would have never known had I not sampled it. This is a great local store and their prices are too bad-I found a bottle of wine for $10! That's just in my price range. So-you go to this oil store, they have plenty to choose from, you wonder why the 3 star rating? Because you seriously have to buy your bottle to get the oil. Okay, we've been to about 10 to 15 oil stores-we hit up different ones when we travel-this is the first one you had to buy the bottle. The staff was very friendly. Answering question. Letting me sample-which you use a spoon-first time too, usually have little cups, they said they cut waste down by not having cups. But buying your own bottle? We just left after that. This is an interesting shop, its actually an international chain but sure enough its right in the middle of Maplewood. It's much more than an olive oil store they also have vinegar and to my surprise also whiskey (they also do whiskey tasking too!). Most of the stock here is very much about the infused thing, you name it they seem to infuse it. The staff during my visit was very attentive and seem to know a lot and not in a know it all sense, very helpful and of course lots of little things to buy, a great place to get a special gift for someone into the whole kitchen experience. If you want just a straight up traditional olive oil place, then Olive Ovation might be a better place, but there are lots of options here too. read more

I love that they let you taste test the stuff and also have adorable little containers to put them in. I was intimidated by this store for a while but I'm so glad I finally stopped in here. It fueled my salad craze for quite some time, trying all the different oils and vinegars. Now, it's where I go to get gifts for all my foodie friends. I also tried their little 3-sample Scotches for my hubby once and he enjoyed them all so much. Vom Fass is a German franchise. The store is very clean and well-organized with its displays of oils, vinegars, wine, brandy, liqueurs, cognac, whisky and other spirits. Our group of four was greeted and given the "company story" about Vom Fass. Tastings were clearly possible, but weren't offered. And she disappeared. Maybe she didn't want to intrude while we looked around, but we had to go get her for tastings. When we got her back, three of us were tasting a variety of offerings. I really wish they offered self-tasting with those little white cups -- like Di Olivas. At Vom Fass, they draw the taste for you into a little, teensy plastic spoon, then hand it to you. One little twitch on either the employee's part or the customer's part is going to make a mess on the floor or on somebody's clothes. And, IMO, she was stingy with the tastings, too. Or maybe she was just unenthusiastic overall. Further, she used the same spoon for all of one person's tastings. Doesn't that leave residuals? I get that the alcoholic beverages may need more monitoring, but vinegars and oils do not. And she disappeared again. Found other patrons, just as more purchases were about to be had from our group. Maybe they need more people working on Saturday. Or maybe they need to be more friendly or more generous and less keen on "THE SALE," because we clearly weren't buying fast enough. read more

As an aspiring cook, and a well-read herbalist and health nut, Vom Fass has things to offer that you cannot find ANYWHERE else in St. Louis. Amongst a long list here are some highlights: - Wellness oils such as Evening Primrose Oil, which is a female balancing tonic for hormones and has a high level of y-linolenic acid - Their fruit vinegars are made by fermenting the actual juice, not just adding fruit flavor like other makers do - Rare culinary oils like Argan Oil, Pine Kernal Oil, and Pistachio Oil (YUM!) I didn't get a chance to sample any of the liquors, but I will be back with my better half for those (I at least need to wait until after 10am to drink whiskey) read more

Oh my god. I came back here on a friend date with some friends who love scotch and vinegar. We were determined to try lots of exciting things. I am so glad I did! It was AMAZING! Amazing enough for a bump in the stars and a review update! We tried lots of things and the ones I really want to rave about are 1) the calamansi vinegar and 2) the fig vinegar. Both are SUPER flavorful. The calamansi is wonderfully bright and I can't wait to use it to brighten up a salad (yes i bought some). Also, the fig vinegar is amazing too! Its very figgy and fairly thick. I want to use it for a goat cheese and fig flatbread. Sounds good, doesn't it? The service was as good as it was last time: super helpful and friendly. OMFG. This store. Crazy awesome. I was wandering down Manchester earlier today, in hopes that I could hit up Penzey's for some cinnamon since I am running low and walked by this place. Noted that it sounded interesting. Realized Penzey's closes at 5pm on Saturdays (dammit!) and on my way back, decided to stop in here on a whim. As soon as I got inside, I was immediately greeted by a suuuuper friendly little dude (omg he was so adorbs...think his name was Luke...) who talked suuuper fast. I was having a difficult time following everything he was saying. But I told him I was looking for an olive oil similar to Frantoia and while he hadn't heard of it, I was able to look it up really quickly on my phone and describe it to him. He pointed me in the direction of a similar-sounding olive oil from Sicily. I tasted it. It was soooo good. Really liked it. Then he explained to me about how you have to either bring your own bottle or buy one. Realizing that running back to my car to grab an empty, desecrated water bottle was probably not an option, I decided to buy a bottle to put the olive oil in. Looking around, I began noticing more and more interesting-sounding items for sale. Saw that they had more types of oils besides just olive and decided to get some truffle oil as well and also some grapeseed oil for making popcorn. While he wrapped those up for me, I wandered over to the booze section. Damn. Alcoholic's paradise. Why did I have to wander in this store!!! Ahhhh my wallet. I had just dropped some serious cash in Maven, so I had to restrain myself here a bit. Except that I didn't. Go figure. I tried the wild rose liquor as well as the vanilla. Ended up walking out of there with 100mL of both (metric system FTW) and also a half-bottle of Malbec for only $8.99. I like that they sell half-bottles here so that way I won't feel bummed about wasting half a bottle when my boyfriend (who does not drink) will not have any either... (yes I have the air pump to prevent leftovers from oxidizing. But it's still not as good the next day. What can I say? I am a wine snob who knows nothing about wine!) I wanted to try the apple pie liquor but decided to save that for another time. I plan to come back here for a wine tasting for sure. He gave me a frequent buyer card because I suppose they wanted me to come back...either that, or I guess I had the look of "unrestrained buyer" glimmering in my eye, lol. Actually, my total came to about $55 or so after tax which wasn't bad for 3 small bottles of oils, 1 half bottle wine, and 2 of the 100ml liquors. You can bring the oil bottles back when they're empty for a refill (so you don't have to buy more bottles) but you can't do it with the booze, sadly. He said it had to do with politics and other lame stuff like that. Lame. Politician losers ruining my alcoholism, lol. But yeah. Only weird thing? He used the same spoon and same glass for multiple samples. I get that they don't want to be wasteful but the truffle oil was so strong that it made the grapeseed oil still taste like truffle oil from the residue left on the spoon. I guess I could have asked for a new clean spoon (or 'accidentally' thrown my old one out!) but I guess I didn't care that much. It was nice to taste the rose and vanilla liquors together but I bet they'd blend anything for you so you could try them together....probably.
