Fantastic place to stay when in town. The history the location and the building itself is so lovely. I love the rooftop seating area great views of the surrounding area. Great staff and amenities. Just a short walk from a local pantry type store. Cobble stone street and entry way makes for bumpy luggage arrivals but it was not a huge problem. Entry way is small. read more

We really liked our stay at the Donna Camilla Savelli. It was a perfect location in Trastevere-- everything was easily walkable, both in the Trastevere neighborhood and across the river. We were surrounded by great food, and the hospitality was great. We loved the chapel inside the hotel, and I wish I had experienced one of the daily masses there. My only downsides were that the shower was hard to work (it was either burning hot or freezing) and there wasn't a gym. However, both are acceptable given the historic nature of the building. There is no other place to stay if you visit the Trastevere neighborhood of Rome. This hotel which was a former monastery built in 1642 was truly beautiful, historic, spacious, and only a 10 minute walk to all the shopping and dining of this specific neighborhood. It is not near the drama of all the big tourist attractions. Unfortunately we only stayed here two nights but it was the best hotel we had stayed in during our 12 day trip to Italy. From the moment you enter through their gate, you will fall in love with this hotel. The front desk staff, bellhops, and concierge, ensured our stay was comfortable and pleasant. The hotel is clean and everything in our room worked to perfection. The housekeeping staff was attentive. The hotel offers dining and drinking in their tree and flowered courtyard which was quiet and peaceful. If you go to their third floor rooftop, you will get an amazing panoramic view of the area. A hearty breakfast buffet is offered each morning and an ATM is in their lobby, which can come in handy. The hotel will arrange car service for you and make dinner reservations. There was no language barrier. The room rates were reasonable and I would not hesitate to stay here again on my next visit. I do not know where you would park a car if you drove here. When you stay in a hotel built in the 1640's it is truly amazing. You have to enjoy the moment. read more

This hotel was very very nice! The front desk staff, the concierge were very helpful throughout the stay, even booking cars for us and a barber for me! Idris, one of the bell persons, was everywhere and helped us numerous times. The standout was the restaurant staff from the manager to the services they were awesome! Sitting in the garden/courtyard area, the center of the hotel, was the center for the restaurant and was great to do whether for the sumptuous breakfast or ice cream at the end of the day. So the suite was a 4 star experience only because it was difficult to get to with crazy stairs and hidden but spatially was great and bathroom solid. The thermostat in both rooms we had was unreliable and it was cold at night consistently. In the next room small superior it was small but workable. I swear it was haunted by old monks. We both felt a presence. This hotel was an old monastary. Smokers from passer by outside would seep through the windows and smell up our room. Thermostat was cold here too. Internet was unreliable and intermittent. Best parts of this place were the breakfast staff and free breakfast. Carmen is a rockstar and deserves a promotion. She got me to try my first blood orange. Location is dog friendly and we'd definitely stay again but in a high room or suite to avoid the smokers. I did not enjoy my stay here. The difference between the service and friendliness of the staff here compared to my hotels this week in Positano and Ravello cannot be understated. - The hotel simply isn't as luxurious as the pictures appear. It's not a $700+ per night hotel. - The concierge completely blew off my request to help me book a dinner reservation even though I emailed 5 times over the course of two months. They answered once so I know the address works. - My departure flight from Rome was delayed two hours so I asked the front desk to reschedule my taxi pick up time. They said they would try to help and two minutes later called back and said they couldn't find a cab at my requested time...It's Rome. It's not hard to find a taxi with a three hour notice. - The front desk was extremely rude when I asked for water and said I could buy it from the bar. - I was quietly drinking wine in the garden one afternoon with my wife when a staff member came and said it was against the rules of the hotel to drink personal wine in the garden and I could either take it to the roof or buy from their bar. It's important to note the garden was essentially empty. - The breakfast is large but not good. Eggs are watery and runny and the staff acted like we were making unreasonable requests when we asked for Tabasco. - The shortest way to sum this up, the staff isn't friendly and doesn't go above and beyond considering the cost. read more

My friends who live in Trestevere recommended this hotel. I double checked reviews and was pleasantly surprised at the high rating and low cost. When I checked in early I was further pleasantly surprised to find that I had both an upgrade and a room ready. This vacation was off to a great start! The hotel used to be a convent and some areas and rooms were more stark than others. Mine was perfect. A large hard bed. Large windows with sturdy shutters and heavy drapes to block the sun. Plenty of room. A large wardrobe for clothes and with a full length mirror as a door. The room also had the Where Rome magazine. Bathroom a good size. They had great amenities - Etro. Loved the bath gel and lotion! There was a church attached and to the left as you entered the hotel. I liked that. But no candles. There were all kinds of nooks and crannies if you go exploring around. There is a grotto/cave but you have to ask reception to see it and I forgot. Downsides: the water did not get hot, only lukewarm, at night. Morning it was fine. There was no clock in room. Service was excellent at the reception desk. You have to give up your key when you leave and retrieve it when you return but they always stopped what they were doing; so you never had to wait. They were always pleasant. They knew every answer to every question I asked. Service in the morning in the courtyard was more hit and miss. Breakfast is a buffet but getting a cappuccino could be quick or 15 min. While I was there is late August, the restaurant was closed and there was a wedding one night; my room was close to it. It went to after 1:30am but hey that's life and I was reading a good book anyway. I would definitely stay here again. read more

Fabulous hotel and fantastic value. Right in the heart of trastevere, which is the hip and trendy part of Rome. The hotel was converted from a historic convent built on top of a hot spring. It has amazing pieces of art - paintings and sculptures that bring you back hundreds of years in history. Since it was built on a functioning convent, the building has great ventilation and quite cool without too much air conditioning needed. Beautiful and quiet courtyard where breakfast is served. An oasis when we stayed there during the heat of summer in 2015. The service was extremely efficient with super capable and friendly staff. It was the fastest checkin ever in Italy (including a five star hotel in Sorrento). When no one else found tickets to the vatican (including the tour companies with guides), the concierge found them in minutes and booked an amazing private guide for us (Barbara) who also was the private guide for Guiliani. If you book private guide, make sure that you have tickets for both vaticans and coliseums separately. The only downside is the bathroom is pretty small and the door opens right to the edge of toilet and a bit cramped. The drainage of the shower didn't work so well. A small downside given the location, historic beauty, and fantastic service. read more

On a recent stay in the Trastevere neighborhood of Rome, I chose the Donna Camilla for it's history and beauty. Overall, I enjoyed my stay here with just a few caveats. 1. Getting off a cruise, we registered early - about 10am. We were told by the very gracious reception desk that we were more than welcome to enjoy breakfast on the premises. Very happy to grab a bite before wandering off for the day, we entered the dining area to find a very aggressive woman (middle age, brunette) working there who refused to let us eat. She told us that we could have a coffee or juice if we really needed it but otherwise could not have anything until tomorrow. Just wow. This was unexpected and I instantly felt very unwelcomed. 2. Construction noise from 8am on. I'm not sure what they are working on but very loud construction began every morning like clockwork at 8am making it absolutely impossible to sleep past then. Think drills, hammers and yelling and you've pretty much got a clear picture. 3. The bathroom. Hot water and water temperature in general was very temperamental. Basically warm or just ice cold. Also, while the bathroom is very large, there is no where to lay out any toiletries and for some reason, the tissue box is hiding in the closet in the bedroom area. The nice things I enjoyed were the lovely bar/food service in the evening (delicious snacks to go along with your glass of wine), the overall beauty of the hotel and the very kind reception staff. For those wondering, the hotel is less than 10 minutes walk from the main Trastevere shopping and dining area. There is a corner store a few minutes down the hill for water, sodas, snacks, etc. The rooms are air conditioned (but will never get very cold if that's your thing). It is easy to get a cab to the main airport (FCO) from the hotel (with reception's assistance) but it will cost you 48 euros. read more

How cool is it to stay in a hotel that was once a convent commissioned in 1642 by the Duchess of Latera, Camilla-Virginia Savelli Farnese, and designed by Francesco Borromini? Pretty freaking cool, I would have to say! Fortunately for guests, this convent was converted into a luxury hotel that has been fully renovated with modern comforts/conveniences that we are accustomed to, including air conditioning and high-speed internet. The service and staff are exceptional, and the rooftop offers some spectacular views of Rome. There is a charming courtyard garden that offers guests some tranquility, and there is even a chapel by the main entrance, too. The location is great... It's steps away from all of the dining and nightlife that Trastevere has to offer, and is a 20 minute walk to the Vatican. The Roman Forum and Colosseum are about 25-30 mins away by foot, but you can get there quicker via public transportation (personally, I enjoyed the walk). I look forward to my next stay. NOTE: Free wifi is accessible only in the common areas, however, they do offer wired access in each room, and it's free, too. read more

I can't believe this hotel is rated almost 5 stars. I would give it maybe 1/2 a star if possible. Yes the building was beautiful but there are many, many beautiful buildings/hotels in Rome. We had been in Italy for over a week already and thought most everyone was lovely. THE RESTAURANT STAFF was horrible!! Just so unbelievably rude for a highly ranked hotel! The 2 MEN that worked there were just the rudest people I've ever interacted with. THE girls/ladies were okay. One of the waiters actually yelled at me this morning. My new address in Rome. Located in the Trastevere area of Rome one can not go wrong in staying here. Formerly a monastery / convent in the late 17th / 18th century turned into a Hotel that comes along with all the blessings. The staff is amazing starting with their Manager Louisella, Alejandro , Giovanni and the rest. Extremely accommodating and super helpful. Very safe area surrounded by tons of quaint restaurants and bars. Better bring a nice pair of walking shoes because one can't help but get carried away in this neighborhood. 45 minute walk to the Coliseum or 24 minutes to the Vatican. That's if you don't get distracted by something of interest along the way. What a find . Great job Louisella. read more

My review relates to management and not the hotel itself. Some time ago, we booked a nonrefundable two night stay after a Celebrity Cruise which was schedule to end on May 4, 2020 in Rome. Clearly we will not be in Rome on May 4 as the respective governments, US and Italy, have cancelled all cruise ships and further, the airlines have cancelled flights back to the US. When I contacted the Hotel and requested a refund as we were not cancelling but rather the authorities cancelled, we were advised that the Hotel would only give us a voucher to be used within a year. Since we are senior citizens (78 & 75) I do not anticipate going to Rome in the next 12 months even if the quarantine was lifted. All of the other nonrefundable deposits have been returned due to the circumstances but VOI Donna Camilla Savelli. BUY BEWARE. read more

This place really is cool! And when you need a place to retreat to in Rome, check this hotel out.... Picking a hotel in Rome is difficult at best because many of the typical chain hotels are not in the center. The Donna Camilla Savelli is great choice. 1. Location - In the Rome Trastavere area, you are within two streets walking distance to squares with tons of restaurants and bar area. This makes it very, very convenient. 2. Ambiance - The hotel is a former convent and is very elegant and informal at same time. Rooms are nice, simple, clean. In the summer when it is 30 or 90 degrees, and humid, the thick stone walls and shutters will keep your room cooler than any air conditioning that usually don't work too great. 3. Parking - If you are in Rome on business and driving this place has it's own courtyard and it is easy to park right in front of the hotel. 4. Price - Reasonable for European / Rome Summer standard. Not the cheapest, but not the most expensive. 5. Food - Fantastic breakfast in traditional European sense that is continental with a bit of hot food too. Don't expect American style breakfast. More fruit, cheese, bread, eggs, cereal, yogurts. But nice. Also, no restaurant on site, yet they do have an inside courtyard that is absolutely tranquil with about 25-30 small tables for two or three that you can sit outside, enjoy your breakfast in a nice cool area before the summer sun warms up the place. 6. Internet - In the main lobby and courtyard. Really not available in the room. However, the seating areas are really perfect for working outside the room! As a traveler that is mostly on business, I am used to staying at all sorts of hotels and I really like this place a lot. I stay, check it out. And, it is very QUIET. read more

We found this hotel after several great reviews on Trip Advisor. I was intrigued after reading it was a 17th century convent, so we talked to a few locals and they also recommended. It's located within walking distance to Trastevere, which is packed with great restaurants, shopping and nightlife. The hotel is near a top of a hill and is quiet at night. Rooms weren't over the top, but very comfortable and tastefully decorated with excellent marble bathrooms that were very clean. They have a great (free) breakfast in the mornings that you can enjoy in the courtyard or the parlor. and they make a good caffe and kept bringing them. The hotel has a very nice feel--maybe it's the nuns that still live in one wing! Many of the original sculptures, woodwork and art appear throughout the hotel and add a nice touch to a newly renovated building. There is also a rooftop deck with 360 view of Rome where you can have a drink and take some photos. The bar and common areas have free wi-fi (the rooms don't have wi-fi, but you can plug in via ethernet). Overall, great hotel, great service and great location. We would stay there again and highly recommend. Do it. read more

The hotel itself is beautiful and the staff is friendly but has a lot of issues that need to be fixed for the price you're paying for a room. 1) the water temperature in the shower is horrible. It's either boiling hot or freezing cold with no in between. My family in other rooms had the same problem. 2) the walls are extremely thin. I did not appreciate getting to listen to the people in the room next to us talking (literally just talking, any other hotel i would not have heard a single thing they were saying) until two in the morning and then even better, listen to them have sex. Very unpleasant and an invasion of privacy on both parts. 3) food at breakfast is sub par and nothing to rave about, i found a hair in my eggs the first morning we were there Overall, would NOT return to this hotel read more

I Love this hotel. Its in the heart of Rome, yet this hotel is peaceful and relaxing. You can go on the roof and watch the sunset or have a glass of wine and read a book in the garden terrace. The employees treat you like family and go out of their way to make you feel at home. The property is beautiful. It was a convent and is filled with beautiful art. A fantastic,charming hotel.
