With so many hotel options in Rome, it seemed oddly coincidental that Hotel Portoghesi was recommended by not one, but two completely unrelated friends. It was described to us as "clean, safe, and ideally located." So we, and another couple that was traveling with us, decided to go with the recommendations. And were so glad that we did. This small, family-run (2 supremely helpful brothers) hotel was absolutely perfect for our short stay (3 nights). It was walking distance from just about everything you would hope to see, close to excellent restaurants and small, unique shops as well as a reasonably-sized grocery store for stocking up on water and other necessities. The rooms were not large, but were more than sufficient in size and impeccably clean. Plus, importantly, the AC unit capably kept up with the 100-degree heat that we experienced in July. The entire experience was superb, and when we return to Rome in the future we will certainly stay at the Portoghesi again. As an added bonus, the best gelato place in the area (Giolitti) is just a 2-min walk away! As a side note...be sure to stop into the beautiful cathedral that is right next door. It's stunning. At 200 euros a night (for 2 person occupancy), it was a mid-range price (for high season, in July). We could have found a less expensive place, but we chose to maximize our experience and minimize the potential for inconveniences. read more
