This was the never ending massage. I have never before wanted a massage to end, never, until today. I had originally found this spot via Yelp and feel compelled to share my experience in hopes it could help someone in the future. I originally tried to book the Thai Essence special (60 minute foot massage and 60 minute Thai massage) online through Yelp but didn't feel comfortable giving a credit card via yelp and was told to call in. I did and booked the Thai Essence package for Saturday. That process seemed straightforward and easy. I arrived and was greeted by a lovely receptionist and given a delicious cup of tea. I was then greeted by the masseuse who seemed equally pleasant. We walked in the room and he asked if I had done Thai massage before. I had in San Francisco and shared my experience. He then asked if I had tried the "herbal ball" before. I told him I had no idea what that was. He then said they'll get me wet so we'd do the foot massage first. I thought that was strange because none of my previous sessions involved water but chalked it up to this place doing things differently. The package started with a 60 minute foot massage. No one needs a 60 minute foot massage especially a mediocre one. It was 60 minutes of moving hands across my skin with barely any pressure. I asked for more pressure once and realized it wasn't going to happen. I immediately thought of how I wasted extra money for this add on. Then he started the Thai massage with the extremely hot balls. I said "owe" no fewer than 6 times. And this went on and on. I remember saying "great, thank you" when he had me roll over because I thought it was finally over. Nope. Another long period. I mentioned to him that it felt pretty long and he chuckled. It did eventually end. I finally got my phone back and saw it was late. Perhaps they built in time it took to set up and transition between services. When I told the front desk how long it felt, she said it was 90 minutes. It then became apparent they booked me for some extreme package. When I shared that was an error and not what I booked, she told me she'd give me 25%. It was not a discount and just what's listed on their website. After expressing my frustration, she charged me for the service I booked. I'm not sure if this is their MO, but thought it could be. Hopefully this prevents them from doing this in the future(if it wasn't a mistake). Note: I modified the review to reduce the star rating based on the owner's response to my initial review. I had originally given them 3 stars in the event the "miscommunication" was inadvertent. His response shows clear dishonesty. There was no parroting back the package I booked during my initial call, I never received a text or call confirmation from their company (I don't even know if I gave them my number when I booked), and there was no mention by the receptionist or the therapist about the modified service. As noted above, I made two comments that demonstrated I thought the service was supposed to be shorter but the therapist either didn't respond or, in one case, laughed. Unfortunately his response demonstrates clear dishonesty from the company. read more

I was really excited after booking a 1 hour full body deep tissue massage. I have gotten countless deep tissue massages in my lifetime. I was also excited to try Viyada Thai Spa as it is very close to my place and I had never been there before. Most unfortunately, my experience was the most terrible I have ever had. In fact, it was so shockingly awful that I am now writing my first ever Yelp review. What I received was not a massage at all. From the moment that I entered the room with the masseuse, he was abrupt, rude, and unwelcoming. The actual massage was so bad that I actually had to tell him to stop. He basically just rubbed oil on my body, which I could have easily done by myself at home. I told him to apply pressure pretty early on, at which point he basically put his entire body weight into one spot on my back and jabbed his fingers in, as if purposely trying to hurt me. I horrified. I told him to take it easy and he gave me attitude and some snarky comment. He had absolutely no technique, no skill, and no idea in the slightest what he was doing. Eventually I told him to stop. At this point he stood over me (as I was under nothing but a sheet) and aggressively and rudely demanded for me to tell him what exactly he did wrong. This made me very uncomfortable. I tried to politely suggest that he should work on applying pressure evenly and learning to identify tension spots (he had no idea how to do this). Additionally, every time he moved the sheet to take my leg or arm out, his movements were very brash and abrupt and he would suddenly pull and yank the sheet out and actually throw it over. It was very bizarre and the farthest thing from relaxing. I walked out of there feeling agitated, annoyed, and furious. I told the reception person that my experience was awful and she did not seem at all concerned. She charged me $125. On top of that, they wouldn't let me use my American Express card. I hope this review saves people their time and money. read more

This place is tied with Bodywaves for the best massage I've received in Boston. A relaxing experience from the minute you walk in. The massage itself was so specific to my body. My right shoulder is always tight and knotted. The therapist spent so much time getting at the area- unlike other massage spas where they don't seem to pay any mind to your requests. I have visited this place two times and now am suffering with pinched nerve, which I have never had in my life before! Doctor said that however I was twisted during Thai massage stretching cause a pinched never. I can't walk or put on shoes and it has been going on ever since the massage. Imagine shooting lightening pain, yep that's what I got. Do not get massages at a place that does not have certified doctor professionals. I just completed a 90 min massage at this spa. The location and environment was clean and lovely and the receptionist was very sweet and professional as was my masseuse. Unfortunately, the 'deep tissue' was light and the technique was very limited. Generally at massage school one is taught a series of techniques and recipes -- this massage therapist clearly had limited training or was very new. Again, the place was clean and everyone was lovely, but I should have left early and didn't. That said, when you pay 145 for a massage - you expect someone seasoned with hours of experience. I booked a couples' 60-min introductory Thai massage for my bf and me last month. Since I've never tried this type of massage before, I can't judge on the authenticity. For sure, it was more invigorating than relaxing, and probably the deepest pressure I've ever experienced. ***THAI MASSAGE FOR DUMMIES*** 1. Do not get nakey. This is *not* a normal spa with lotion/oil slathering. You have to wear the outfit they give you. 2. Your therapist will use his hands, elbows, arms, and FEET to massage your body, and it will feel like good punishment. 3. At times, you might feel like you're Tickle Me Elmo. 4. The therapist will get all up in your space. Yes, my inner thighs and groin area got some attention too. The intimacy is all normal! 5. Never done yoga before? Now you have. Your arms and legs will be pulled into certain static stretches by the therapist, basically assisted yoga poses. 6. Be prepared to feel sore for dayzzz When the hour was over, I felt like Mrs. Incredible with super stretch powers. My therapist, Chris, did an excellent job. Throughout the massage, he focused on my back and legs (as requested), checked in with me about the pressure, and helped me with my breathing technique for certain movements. +1 for hot tea before massage and bottled water afterward. Overall, a great first experience, but not sure if I'm hooked per say, since I generally prefer more relaxing massage. Ambiance was your typical dimly-lit massage room - simple, nothing fancy. FYI. Finally!!!! Thai massage in Boston! I regularly used to get Thai massage in San Francisco, and ever since I moved to Boston I've been on the hunt for Thai massage. I prefer Thai massage because, while Swedish tends to feel great in the moment, I'll still leave with knots, whereas Thai is more intense and involves the massage therapist gently stretching out your limbs, but it gets all the knots and kinks out. I used the Gilt promo, and was able to schedule my Thai massage easily and right away. The massage studio is on Boylston downtown, and it was surprisingly nice and really relaxing. There was low, almost candle-lit lighting, and the receptionist gave me tea, a warm wash cloth, and bamboo sandals upon arrival. I was impressed by how spa-like the space was given it's a smaller establishment downtown. Chris, my massage therapist, was excellent! I tend to prefer deep tissue massage, and I've found that with Thai massage in the US, when you ask for deep tissue, it's DEEP tissue. It was absolutely perfect for me, but if you prefer lighter, just ask. There were certain areas I asked for lighter massage, and when I asked Chris adjusted immediately. Incredible massage, got out ALL the knots and kinks. I felt amazing for days---- Chris erased all the soreness I had from the gym and yard work. I will DEFINITELY be coming back, but hoping for a deal, as $130/hour is a bit pricey (especially for Thai massage). read more

I ended up going here last year and just never got around to giving a review. The massage itself was decent but the masseuse did not practice proper hygiene. She massaged my feet then proceeded to give me a face massage without washing or sanitizing her hands! She was massaging the oil that had been on my feet and body on my face. I had the great fortune to receive a deep tissue massage from Suda. Aside from being an excellent deep tissue massage, Suda combined it with holds and fusion strokes with Thai massage. She has exceptionally strong hands and is very knowledgeable about anatomy and massage techniques. I am a massage therapist myself and its wonderful to find someone as gracious and competent as Suda. I have had a lot of massages in my life, and even completed a full course of Rolfing (which is very intense). I have to say that 90 minutes here with Arnie was what I have been looking to find for some time. Part osteopath, bonesetter, physical therapist, chiropractor, and massage therapist, Arnie moved parts of me back into the right positions that I had been trying to get back in alignment for some time. While the full experience is intense (at times, I felt like some of my muscle fascia was coming apart, which is a good thing, but burns pretty deep), when you are done you feel like a new person. Previously, I would have to go to my chiropractor, use various techniques to stretch my muscles on various planes and ranges of motion, go back to my Rolf therapist for a number of visits, and then to a deep tissue massage therapist - Arnie hit all of this in 90 minutes, in one place. I rarely give five stars for anything - in fact, I rarely write reviews. However, this was truly worth it. Get 90 minutes here, and find out how much better your body can feel after a Thai massage. Best deep tissue massage from Ryan. Period!! I was in town for a wedding and by Sunday I was just exhausted. I was able to make a last minute appointment. On Sunday they have to ring you up and you have to walk one flight of stairs -- just FYI. The location was quiet as it was a Sunday. Staff was friendly. Ryan was very knowledgeable of my tight upper shoulder and chest from breastfeeding and doing a lot of upper body exercise. He worked very thoroughly through them and they felt SO MuCH BETTER afterwards!! In fact I extended the massage from 60 to 90 minutes because he was really trying to work on my knots and get them to loosen up. He was very attentive and applied just the right amount of pressure. We also chatted a bit during the session and definitely you can tell he has a great personality. I have had many massages--- traditional Chinese foot massage, deep tissue, traditional Thai, prenatal, etc. I have had it in China, Taiwan, Seattle, San Francisco, Las Vegas.... this is by far one of the best. I am in fact kinda sad I don't live in Boston because I wish I could come back next week for another session! Highly recommend this place and Ryan. Hands down the best massage I've had in Boston!! Actually, better than the several Thai massages I got in Thailand several years back. If you're looking for an extremely she-she, fancy spa experience, walk around the block to one of the sheik Newbury street spas. If you're looking for an excellent, therapeutic massage in a relaxing atmosphere with extremely friendly service, look no further. Receptionist greeted us very warmly, serving us lemongrass tea and slippers as we filled out our paperwork. The lobby is very nice - dimly lit, wonderful relaxation music, and lovely lemon-verbana type aromas. A little small, and one notch down in frills from a fancy western spa, but nicely decorated and a relaxing start to massage. Oh yeah, great relaxation music. I had a 90 minute Thai massage, my girlfriend had a 90 minute Swedish - separate rooms, not couples massage. My masseuse asked me about any particular trouble spots, of which I have a bad one. She asked me expound on its history, etc. During the massage, she definitely dedicated more time to working out my trouble spots than any massage I've had over the years. My girlfriend said her massage was excellent but she thought it was a bit pricey for swedish. I did take advantage of their offer to save 20% on my next massage if booked the same day - the first time I've ever booked a follow up massage! I also liked that they were very forthcoming about the 30% discount on first time massage as advertised on their website, instead of hoping I'd forget about it. Stay away from the Thai massage!!! The guys feet were used to massage me and they were freezing cold. Plus the bed was hard as a rock. Instead of a hole for your face I had to put a pillow under my chest and another pillow on my forehead. The space between just pushed my hot breath back into my face and I could hardly breathe. I work on computers and asked to focus on my Neck and shoulders. Instead he spends 10 min on the most important area for a 90 min massage. On top of this I feel like my back is messed up now due to the unnatural stretches he had me do. I've had more massages than I can count and this was the worst. I figured the good reviews meant I was safe but boy was I wrong. I asked for a discount since it was such a terrible massage and the owner who gave me the massage said I don't have to tip him. On another note my friend got a deep tissue massage from a lady and he said it was amazing. So I paid $260 for 1 bad massage and 1 good one. The moral of the story, don't get the Thai massage. Edit: Fyi 4 hours later I feel like a nerve was pinched or something really bad. Looks like I might have to spend time and money on physical therapy. I just wanted my shoulders and neck rubbed. Fantastic couples massage! It was our first time here and they run a really nice introductory discount; 30% off your entire service! We got a 90min massage; I got a deep tissue and my boyfriend got a Swedish. Only cost $252! My masseuse was very nice and took some time to understand my problem areas. The massage was amazing and I was really relaxed the whole time. After the massage was over and we were dressed our masseuses both made recommendations on stretches that we could do to help loser up our shoulders and other problem areas. Viyada Thai Spa was a solid experience, but I think the devil is in the details with high scrutiny for a high price. I went with my partner for a couples massage. We were excited to celebrate Valentines Day with a relaxing experience. We entered a dark lobby with a calming ambiance. The decorations are beautiful, although the candles are all fake. I suppose real candles could be hazardous and would need to be replaced somewhat often, but they would be much better than fake ones. But let's get to the massage itself. I think there were huge differences between my partner's and my massages. While I got a truly deep tissue massage, my partner got more of a superficial massage. We didn't really have significantly different requests. Definitely be specific about what you want and advocate for what kind of massage you want. You definitely pay enough that you should get what you want and not leave disappointed. Unfortunately, that was the case for my partner. For most of the time, it was silent in the room. I think playing music or having natural sounds for the whole time would have been nicer. But in truth, the candles, the music etc were less the issue than the massage itself. While the staff was kind, I think the massage has to match the cost. read more

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaass!!! I came here last week to get a Thai massage and the experience was wonderful!! I had gotten a Thai massage before in LA a few years back, so I thought I knew what to expect, but this experience surpassed by last experience by eons. My massage therapist, Chris, was very friendly and accommodating. He asked me what I wanted to get out of the massage. I told him about all of my "problem areas", upper back and hips, and he made sure to focus on those areas during the massage. I also told him I was ticklish, but surprisingly there were only 2 brief moments where I laughed. He also kept checking in with me about the pressure, making sure I was OK, and I really appreciated that. The ambiance was lovely. The place is dimly lit with faux candles. They bring you water or tea and a hot cloth for your face and/or hands upon entering. It's a good idea to arrive 15 minutes before the session if it's your first time because you have to fill out a health form beforehand. The rooms have minimal decor. There was soft music and nature sounds playing in the background which really aided me into falling into a state of deep relaxation. During the massage, there was some slight pain/discomfort, but in a good way. You know that the kinks, knots and muscle tightness are being worked out because of it. So, expect this. You will feel so much better afterwards. I'm also extremely inflexible, but by the end of the the massage, Chris has me bending in ways I never thought I could. Haha. I highly recommend Viyada. In fact, I'm going back in a month for a foot massage. Can't wait! read more

I don't really Yelp much these days but sometimes an experience is just so beyond your expectations that you have to shout it from the Yelp rooftops. I desperately needed a day of pampering and self care and booked an appointment here after reading an article about local spas in Boston Magazine. Turns out, a friend also highly recommended Viyada and promised it was one of the best spas in town. I had no problem booking only a couple days before I wanted to come in and even got a 30% off first time introductory rate. I opted to book with Lay for a 90 minute aromatherapy/hot oil massage. This woman is a magic miracle worker. Not only did she apply just enough pressure, she made sure to communicate with me the entire time to make sure she was not hurting me or not getting deep enough. Lay was also extremely intuitive and knew when to have casual conversation with me to help build our connection (she's such a sweetheart!) and when to be silent to allow me to enjoy and breathe. Afterwards, she transferred a final blast of energy that left me light, carefree, relaxed, and completely ready to take on the world. (And book a second appt :) I absolutely recommend this little slice of heaven for a much needed urban escape. read more

If i could give more than 5 stars I would. What a way to pamper myself after a 4 hour drive from NY. It was kind of difficult to make an appointment for 2 for the same massage treatment at the same time so my friend decided to do the traditional Thai massage & I decided on the hot oil massage. We both loved it! As new customers we had to fill out an information form & were given slippers and offered drinks. Our treatments in total was $200. Not too sure how much each massage are but I think there was a 30% off specific treatments for new customers. I would definitely return if I ever visit Boston again. The stretching and active movement really help. The staff knows their art, ask good questions for first-time-thai-massagers like me. Fantastic massage! This was my first experience with Thai massage and I don't think I could have had a better one. I felt welcome and comfortable from the moment I walked in the door. The spa itself has a warm, relaxing feel with dim lighting and a nice seating area where you're offered tea and/or water. If you're unfamiliar with Thai massage, do your research first! It's not your standard lie-on-a-table massage, it's actually interactive - your therapist will ask you to move your body in different ways and he/she is kind of all up on you, but in a good way. Could seem weird if you're not prepared for it, but it was exactly what I was looking for after a 13.1 mile walk the day before. I've had a lot of traditional massages - almost all of which were great - but this left my muscles feeling the most rejuvenated by far and my aches and pains had nearly subsided. It helped that I had a Spa Week gift card, otherwise I'm not sure I would have splurged on the full price, even though it's absolutely worth it. As soon as we had arrived, my partner and I were warmly greeted by the smiling and very soft spoken receptionist who was just the sweetest! I had signed us up for the couples massage. My partner chose the 90 minute tradition Thai massage while I had the 30 minute salt scrub and 60 minute Swedish massage. My masseuse explained that the salt scrub was not going to take up the full 39 minutes but once applied and massages into the skin it would be left on with hot towels until I felt cold and wanted to start my massage. I appreciate the fact that she told me instead of thinking I would be left there for just 30 minutes with a salt scrub all over me. The massage was amazing! Her hands really worked wonders on me and I was never once in pain or felt like she was using too little or too much pressure. I couldn't believe how thorough and particular she was making sure every knot was relieved. I peeked my eyes to look over at my partner and saw that the masseuse was standing on his back and heard occasional loud cracks which had me wondering if he was alright. He told me she was a little heavy handed but managed to work out every problem area he had. He does flooring and works long hours bending over so his back and legs always seem to be suffering. I don't doubt that his masseuse was amazing if she could take away all the aches and soreness in just one massage. I think the massage along with the experience and atmosphere was totally worth the price! We both felt like kings and queens the minute we walked in.
