Alpendre is popular, so it is probably best to make a reservation. We arrived at 7:30 without a reservation and we were told we needed to be finished by 9:00pm. That was no problem and we glad they could seat us. Alpendre is simple and casual. The prices are reasonable. Sadly they were sold out of the grilled octopus and sardines. We did order the garlic shrimp and they were excellent. The Piri Piri fried chicken was also delicious. The chorizo and pickles was a strong dish also. The wait staff was super friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend this restaurant. I wish we had time to go back to try some more of the menu.

When in Lisbon... seafood! We found this decently reviewed restaurant that is also located on a…read moremain square adjacent to the sea/port. It sports a large outdoor dining area (roughly 20+ tables). Our waiter (as so many in Lisbon) also spoke English, Spanish, and a little French. We all had fun(?) trying to practice our own other language with him (me Sp and her Fr). He was... polite. There are multiple seafood platters on their menu and they are somewhat grouped by theme such as primarily shellfish or primarily fish. We opted for the shellfish (crab, shrimp, clams, snails, even barnacles!) all ocean-derived and nearly all are served precooked/chilled FYI. I lamented to our waiter that there might be too many shrimp and maybe not enough crab. He said, but why, it's all you can eat! Whaaat? This is nowhere clear from the menu but that made our decision easy. We tweaked the initial order and subsequently got a couple of refills on the crab claws once we finished the (enormous) first platter. The barnacles were our least favorite - roughly 1 inch long rubbery, super salty tubes. In Portugal, as most of Europe, there is no free tap water. Anywhere. There is ample plain (bottled) or sparkling (bottled) and each always comes in glass (different brands) and typically runs about 3 Euros for either. Throughout the week I made accidental requests for "seltzer" and always received a "pardon?" Their terms are sparkling or "with gas." Our bill total came to €101 which included about €10 in VAT tax, two orders of bread; two glasses of wine and a bottle of water. Not bad at all. Service was consistently slow and you had to "find/hail" your waiter for anything. We learned this was the norm in most restaurants throughout Europe and tipping is generally not expected because they all receive standard wages. We tacked on 5-10% nearly everywhere because, well, one less reason to dislike Americans?

The main disappointment was that the service was just HORRIBLE. There would be times we felt neglected and there would be long delays between courses that really interrupted the flow of the evening. It was so bad that we were able to notice that our dishes slowed down so much that other tables (at least 2) that had showed up 30-45 minutes after us had caught up to our course. It was hard to even flag people down. The food was delicious but didn't have that wow factor. My partner is vegetarian and her meal was simply the same dish just substituted with a vegetarian food type so like replacing meat with soy protein or vegetables. It felt like such a cut and paste type of action that her dishes were quite underwhelming and left a lot to be desired. The restaurant does have a beautiful spacious space that overlooks the park but that's not enough to cover the underwhelming food and terrible service. It felt like they were just doing the bare minimum and riding on the success of past years and I would be honestly surprised if they keep the star with this kind of experience. For reference, we had the typical 11 experience menu.

The same thing happened at this restaurant but the menu looked good so we decided to try it. I had their typical fish stew and my dad had their typical cod dish with mussels and potatoes. Both dishes were excellent. I loved my fish stew, however my fish had so many bones, it was a ton of work. Flavor wise, I would get it every week, but I told my family I wouldn't order it again because it was too much work. We sat on the patio and we had a view of a beautiful tiled building. But the view is really just of the tourists walking by and more restaurants. Of note, when we got the menus, the menus called the restaurant "Scarface Restaurant" which was funny because we would eventually see a "God Father" and "Good Fellas" restaurant in Lisbon as well.
