I haven't been to an Optomistrist in a very long time due to not being able to afford to go, but I got better insurance and was able to come here. Dr. Aker and his staff have been incredibly friendly and helpful in getting me a new prescription and new pair of glasses that work for me. The first time I came in, Dr Aker took the time to get to know me, and address any concerns I had. The office pup is also a huge plus! Every time I come in, he comes running over to say hi. I have not had my eyes examined in years, and was completely impressed by my experience at Visualeyes. Dr. Aker was very helpful, extremely knowledgable, and made the entire process comfortable. He explained each step of the process, and also let me know exactly what each step would accomplish. After Dr. Aker completed the thorough examination, I began to look for frames for my new prescription. Having never worn glasses before in my life, it was nice to have the help and support of the staff in providing numerous options, as well as opinions on different styles. I've been going here for over a year and have never experienced anything less than perfection! They have the most frames with the best quality and the highest level of customer service. Never did I feel pressured to buy anything that I didn't need or want and the lovely ladies (shoutout to Natasha and Rida!) did an amazing job of helping me pick my frames out; all genuine in their opinions and catered to my every need. I went in for a new prescription and was pleased with the service I received from the moment I walked in. I've gone here for the last few years, really only because of the convenience factor. I was a student at Portland state so it was easy for me to go in for appointments or to grab contacts etc. However in all my time here I've experienced both the doctor not listening to my needs, but also trying to constantly upsell me. I feel like he tries to take advantage of kids who don't know any better or who have parents that pay for everything. He offered me a sample of blue light contacts, and then charged me for them without telling me. And then when I explicitly said I did not want them and wanted my regular contacts, he still ordered the wrong ones for me to try to make me pay for them. He also was pushing colored contacts on me which I had mentioned I was not interested in at all. With covid they have been on limited hours. That's fine and normal, however I have been unable to get any information from the front desk about the hours that seem to change everyday. I've driven down there twice and have had them closed twice and have not had my messages returned They also don't update their website at all for hour changes. Just not with going to when there are other, professional doctors to go to. read more

This office had an opportunity for a loyal customer, and blew it. I had explained my situation and my troubles trying to go to Costco for glasses and female receptionist was amazing by addressing what I was saying. However the male receptionist didn't even provide his name and didn't seem to listen to me on the phone. He came off as rude and came off as only caring about himself. Snow was not even stuck to the ground yet except for some very light patches. Still I called just in case the decided to close early and informed them if they had any cancellations that I was close and would love the opportunity to have an appointment before they close. The male receptionist only replied, "I will call you if we close early." Not even acknowledging the purpose of my call. An appropriate response would have been, "If there are any cancellations, I will inform you as well if we close early and are unable to see you due to weather conditions. How about I reschedule you just in case we do have to close early and if we are open we will see you at 12:30pm. Is there anything else I can help you with? Ok well I hope you have a great day a be safe out there. That weather may be getting worse." That response is the type that brings in and keeps patients. Instead he kept everything short and honestly probably causes a lot of people to go elsewhere for their eye wear and care. If I had an employee like the male receptionist and I read this review, he would be talked to about appropriate customer service and I would point out to him that causing me to loose money due to his attitude makes it a lot less likely for him to have a raise and if it continues would increase his chances of unemployment in the future . However he is not my employee and after seeing other reviews I don't feel like this office even cares about new potential patients and their current patients. read more

The rest of the staff were really laid back but very kind and well informed, especially about insurance issues. They just let me do my thing and pick my frames but were there if I had any questions. If you value your time, go somewhere else or you can expecting wasting at least 20 minutes besides your appointment time. I have been a regular customer at this store for at least 4-5 years and I had no problems waiting extra time before, but it just keeps getting worse and I'd arrive before my appointment and check in and be kept waiting for long periods of time without even getting something along the line "sorry about the wait". On top of that, they would give you the attitude of "our time is really valuable, but yours is defiantly not." Customer service keeps getting worse and worse and it's funny to see the management trying to come up with excuses and justifying the behavior replay to the reviews. I was in there today for an eye exam appointment. Checked-in 5 minutes before the appointment time, and waited for exactly 20 minutes, that's 15 minutes after my appointment time and then decided to leave because no one even spoke with me, or told me that I'll be "seen shortly" or that there might be a delay or anything like that. When I came back, about 20 minutes later (which is exactly the amount of time they wasted from me), they said they can't see me at that time. When I mentioned that they wasted 20 minutes of my time waiting without even telling me something like "sorry about the delay," I got a funny replay only then, they said "oh we are sorry about the wait.!" Really? I don't usually like to write negative reviews, but I wish I did long time ago so that people do not have to waste their time (as it turned out I wasn't the only one facing this issue with this store!) however, to be honest, their contact lenses prices are competitive in comparison to others. But their glasses frames prices are ridiculously over priced at least double their online retail price. Bottom line is, if you're okay with waiting, and are there for an exam or getting contacts, go for it. Otherwise I'd suggest you find another place for your business. read more

Dr. Aker is by far the most attentive doctor of any kind that I've ever seen. I went in with an eye comfort problem, rather than vision problem. He was very patient and took his time with testing and explanations, even though I had screwed up and was late to my appointment. After my appointment, he emailed to remind me what we'd discussed and let me know approximate costs with my insurance status. The staff is very helpful as well. Even the wait area is unusually enjoyable, with hilariously oddball reading material. read more

I've been to this place a few times in the past, last time one of their employees messed up with the screw of my sunglasses. Today I called for another appointment to give it another chance. The guy picked up the phone was very rude, he was very impatient as if he was in a rush to finish work. Well there are plenty of eyewear places around and he just made my decision easy. read more

Buyer beware. Bought new lenses with all the pricey options and paid a fair price. Was told to expect a week to 10 days for completion. Took three weeks due to continual quality problems with the optician they sent my order to. I started complaining after the 10 days were up and was told that they sent my order to an un-tried contractor optician because of my insurance which is UHC. After relying on back-up glasses for three weeks my eyes were literally bloodshot due to the strain. If they had told me that my insurance was an issue I could have decided whether to take the risk or not. But they took my order and $$ and implied that all was routine until it was too late to take action. Very sloppy management and customer focus read more

I usually just don't feel strongly enough about services to write reviews one way or another, but the service here is legitimately some of the most incompetent I have ever received, and when I got an email reminding me to make my appointment with Visualeyes earlier today (given that it has been a year since my first amazing experience there), I was reminded of the sheer unadulterated loathing that I really wanted to put into words. I went to Visualeyes because I'm a PSU grad student and the price was right, but what ensued following my first appointment was a nearly six-month ordeal. The first time I went in, Dr. Aker gave me a thorough examination and a new prescription. I got a nice discount on the frames and the lenses. When I returned for my glasses, my prescription turned out to be incorrect. The employees encouraged me to wear the glasses for at least a week to make sure my eyes had adjusted properly, but it still ended up being incorrect (which I knew in the first place). We did another examination, got it checked out, no sweat. However, this happened at least four times. Maybe five. Every time that I went in to pick up my glasses, the prescription was incorrect again, and every time the the prescription was incorrect, I was made to wait a torturous week before I came back in, and I would have to come back in and meet the skeptical face of the doctor who, every time I came in, forgot the issue I had been in with a measly two weeks before (no matter how many times it happened). Every subsequent time, the staff was friendly but vaguely condescending--I was genuinely made to feel like I was making up my issues, wrong about the problems I was encountering. They seriously made me wear incorrect prescriptions for weeks at a time. They just couldn't get my prescription right. They couldn't figure it out. And they did a terrible job explaining what about it was wrong too, didn't ever bother to explain to me what was happening inside my own face. At one point, the doctor prescribed something that had no possible way of working on the off chance that it might...? It was like they were pulling solutions out of midair, taking their best guess, because they couldn't figure my eyes out. But I had to wait for the solution, be disappointed time and time again, and in the meantime, my eyes were suffering. I'm an editor. I read tiny text for a living. Do you know what it's like copyediting with an incorrect prescription for months at a time? I will give you a hint. IT IS PURE SUFFERING. The final prescription they gave me before I gave up on them altogether was so far off the mark, I honestly have no idea what was even going on in the doctor's head. When I took the last pair of glasses he had given me to a different optometrist, he actually laughed at how far out of left field the prescription was. Using the frames that I had gotten at Visualeyes, I had another eye exam, and I was fitted with a working pair of glasses in three days flat. This new optometrist also recommended I get reading glasses, and you know what? Those worked perfectly too. Two working pairs of glasses in three days! My new optometrist hand-cut the lenses in their offices instead of shipping them off to some impersonal factory to maybe get it right, so that should have been my first clue, I guess. My first appointment with Visualeyes was in March 2014. I didn't get working glasses until December, and I certainly didn't get them from Visualeyes. They unrepentently sucked up all my visual insurance for the year and wasted months of my life on headaches, and I should've given up on them a long time before I did, but I just didn't have the money to burn elsewhere because I'm a poor grad student. I would not recommend Visualeyes to my worst enemy. I'm not saying they're not genuinely friendly people, and I believe that they were genuinely baffled by their inability to help me. They didn't mean me any ill will. And hey, their collection of frames is great! But holy goodness, do not. DO NOT. Trust your eye health to them. read more
