From their commitment to being a safe inclusive space to having a unique and fun environment, this is Columbus's hidden gem. I love Virtue! I've been coming to Virtue for close to 2 years now and have had nothing but positive experiences. I love changing up my hair and Ava has always been so helpful with executing just what I want. From a normal trim, to bangs, to a major chop, I've never been disappointed. The vibe of the salon is also so fun! The hair wash room is dark and quiet and great to relax. The rest of the salon has a very quirky/eclectic aesthetic and has great vibes. Everyone who works there has also been so nice and chatty. I also feel like they don't try to upsell you on products/services if you don't want any which is a nice change from other salons. It is on the pricier side of haircuts (I've never gotten color so I can't speak to that), especially if you book with a more experienced stylist, but the pricing is clear when booking and is worth it in my option. Due to a protest on the Main Street corner, there was heavy traffic and no parking around the building. I called ahead of my appointment to inform staff that I would be late, but their policy was a strict 15 minutes with no grace for the situation, and charged me 40$ for a no show on time fee, even though I was arriving at the 16 minute mark. I was a first time guest and excited to try the salon out but will not be returning there again, this encounter left a bitter taste. read more

I've been to a handful of hair stylists across the city, but I keep coming back to Virtue. Their prices match those of independent hairdressers in the area. The difference is, I've found, you're more seen and heard here compared to other places. After a particularly negative experience with a hairdresser at the German Village Penzone Salon, I came to Virtue to help fix my poor hair. I've been going here since. The stylists are all knowledgeable, regardless of years of experience or price point offering. They all have their specialties, and there's a lot of variety and options here. And of course, as their namesake, the products they use are vegan and don't test on animals. I need to ensure that the products used on me are paraben-free, and they're able to accommodate that without issue. They are also LGBTQIA+ friendly, which is a plus in any establishment. I've been going to Virtue for 10 years. The owner is from my home town, so I've always taken a little pride in what a cool business it was. They do a good job with my hair consistently. However, the salon in general has just become increasingly aloof and pretentious over the years. Last year, I went in with my 4-month-old, breastfed baby. She was in her seat, awake but happy (nothing but smiles and giggles out of her the whole time). I was duly informed that children were not allowed; they would allow it this time, but "if it happens again" I would be asked to leave. I then proceeded to sit quietly and receive my $80 haircut feeling like I was in detention. Just as it is the business's right to make policies that work for them, it is my right to not patronize businesses that make mothers feel like they're not welcome in society. My two daughters will only be young children for a few years, but we'll all need haircuts for much longer. You can bet we'll be getting them somewhere else. P.S. I find it very disingenuous how Virtue makes a big show of being inclusive, then excludes all children, and, by extension, any mother without the privilege of a good support system. read more

If I could give it 0 stars I would. Please see the pictures for reference. I asked the stylist for her help because I knew I wanted something face-framing but I didn't know how much off I wanted because I've been going to the same stylist for the last 3-4 years but then I moved to OH and everything is new to me. It took me a year and a half to grow my hair to the length it is after having it short for a while. Now I have something that resembles a diy hair cut gone wrong. The front has layers that were poorly executed and the back chunk has no layers at all. It's just one straight random cut. It doesn't blend in. It doesn't look right. I've been crying and tucking my hair behind my ears, wearing baseball caps, clipping the random Frankenstein pieces back, tying it up and gel-ing down everything. It's my birthday in two weeks and I've never felt so ugly in my life. I can't believe I spent 60+ dollars to hate myself and enter a new year of my life crying and hiding. read more

In all of my 35+ years of life my first appointment at Virtue Vegan was the very first time I felt like I was being listened to. For years Saralee has been absolutely amazing and walks me through the plan and explains why she is doing things a certain way and if she thinks something might look/turn out better than what I was describing she'll explain why. I fully trust her and anyone in the salon. The staff has been nothing short of amazing and I always feel welcomed and comfortable. I had my second appointment with the stylist Lillian at Virtue this morning and I noticed something that really sets this salon apart from others--every single stylist in the room was really listening to their client! My experience was so amazing the second time, that I scheduled another appointment with Lillian for later this Spring. I had my first visit to Virtue Salon this week and I will definitely be coming back. I had been growing out my hair for years, and finally cut it all off to donate it a few months ago. I don't know what to do with shorter, chin length hair, so I asked the stylist, Rachel B., to basically do what she thought would be best. She asked me some questions about how I care for and style it, and she took that I to consideration for the overall cut. It was a simple cut with light layers and face framing, but it turned out so nice! The washing room was such a nice touch being a quiet and relaxing area. Even when I first walked in I could tell I liked the whole vibe of the salon. TJ helped to check me in and took my jacket, and I had only a short wait by their fireplace until my stylist was ready. I had an appointment and got there and was told my stylist wasn't in. They claim they sent a text but when she showed me proof, it was the wrong number. She then blamed it on the computer when it was HER error because I've had texts and calls before so I know its right in the system. Don't lie and blame it on the computer! Own up! And of course there is no other way to communicate other than reviews if I want to speak to someone. I don't know if I'll be back. And your cancellation policy should go for your stylists as well. I've been cancelled on three times and they were all hours before my appointment. I count on my appointment too just like your stylist count on the money. read more

The most important thing at this Virtue Vegan salon isn't the client's time, money, nor satisfaction. Rather, the highest priority here is the stylist's time and their ability to get through as many appointments in a day as possible. During my last visit I was unhappy with how my hair was cut and styled (eventhough I bring a reference photo in every time and, truth be told, I wasn't happy with the cut and style of my 2nd to last appointment but chose not to say anything thinking I would be sure to give the stylist more specific guidance the next time). Regardless of me giving more specific guidance, my stylist just seemed to want to cut and style my hair the way they thought best. When I said something I was told to wait until I wore it curly (I have naturally curly hair and the style I had gotten was a blowout), then if once I wore it curly, I still didn't like the cut, I could come back and get it fixed. When I tried to schedule the "fix it" appointment, rather than trying to get me in as soon as possible (so I wouldn't have to walk around with a haircut I bought and paid for but did not like) they chose a day/time that worked best for the stylist (it was at least a week and a half out, if not more). I took the appointment, showed up 10 minutes early, and was taken back to the chair early. I explained what I wanted and the stylist cut my hair for maybe 10 minues (never washed, never dried, never styled). When I couldn't see an improvement, I was told there wasn't anything else that could be done as the stylist didn't have time to even wash my hair (even though I made the appointment at least a week and a half earlier and was taken back to the chair 10 mimutes early). I immediately left the salon as I finally realized my satisfaction (as the client spending my time and money there) wasn't this stylist's priority. Any salon that prioritizes cranking out appointments over client satisfaction isn't one I want to frequent. I do not care how "trendy" everyone looks or how safe their products are, if they don't value their clients and strive for client satisfaction, this is not a place I'll patronize. A woman's hair is an extremely important part of her appearance and a professional woman's appearance (right or wrong) can affect her professionally (you only get one chance to make a good first impression when standing in front of your C-Suite). If you're a hair salon and you don't understand how important and how personal a haircut is, or you do understand but just do not care, you're not the place for me. To possible future clients, good luck if you go to this salon. Fingers crossed the stylist gets it right the first time because they WILL NOT make time to properly fix anything you don't like later. The highest priority at the Virtue Vegan in Clintonville is getting folks in and out, not client satisfaction. But hey, you get to enjoy the really cool ambience if you ever go there, so ... there's that. -_- read more

My first review of Virtue was from over 5 years ago. Time for an update! A few hair stylists and salons later, I'm back. I am really digging their new (to me!) location. Virtue is a vegan concept salon--which is not the reason I chose to go back--but it's their thing--and I respect that (and they're not at all preachy about it!) It's close to home for me, so I know I'm supporting a locally-owned business and I really like the chill vibe and their retro aesthetic. It's such a shabby-chic eclectic environment with tons of eye candy to keep your eyes busy while your hair processes! I've now been back for two appointments with Brittany and she's pretty awesome. My first appointment she balayaged some warm brown into my blackish brown locks and the result was amazing. She listened to what I wanted--my likes and dislikes of a "great hairdo" and made it happen. The cut she gave was also very versatile for my thick hair which sometimes I leave naturally curly or sometimes straighten. I returned to Brittany 6 weeks later for a root retouch and trim--and was thrilled again! The pricing is on par with similar salons in Clintonville. And hell, I deserve a little splurge sometimes! read more

I'm a long time costumer of virtue salon and have enjoyed their services over the years, until now. I unexpectedly got sick on the day of my appointment. Virtue would only let me cancel it with a 50% cancellation fee costing me $30. When I spoke to the manager to express my dissatisfaction as a costumer, she was not sympathetic and said her doctor's office does the same. I am a medical provider, and we do not do this to our patients because we understand that people have circumstances that arise that are outside of their control and would't want to punish them for that. Additionally, my doctor's office does not have this policy, nor my dentist nor my pediatrician. It was a bizarre argument for justifying this policy. I understand that Virtue wants to protect their hairdressers' time and money, but the business should do that. That shouldn't be put on costumers. I'm a very dissatisfied costumer. read more

I first came to Virtue Salon because my hair stylist started working here and I am so happy she did! The vibe and atmosphere here is so refreshing and relaxing. I love that they do "silent shampoos" where you get to relax and enjoy the projections of patterns on the ceiling. The products they use are all natural and vegan. I usually get my hair cut at Ulta but wanted to donate my hair and found Virtue donates to Children with Hair Loss. Scheduling an appointment was easy. They asked a few qualifier questions to make sure I had usable hair and booked me on my day off. It was raining when I walked in and the receptionist took my soaking wet umbrella and coat. She offered me hot coffee, tea, or ice water. Armed with hot tea, my hairstylist, Kayleigh, was ready for me. We spoke about my hair goals and realistically how much maintenance I was willing to spend on my hair each day. We decided on bangs and I let Kayleigh go from there. 10 inches shorter and feeling much lighter I love my new hairdo! Afterwards I stuck around a bit longer to answer some emails and enjoy the rest of my tea. It was nice getting to relax and take in the environment. The next week I received a hand written note on a homemade postcard (made from a cereal box. How creative is that!?!) hoping that I was pleased with my haircut and style. It was super sweet of Kayleigh to send a card. What a unique way to reach out to clients. I will definitely be going back to Virtue in the future. Plus, they offer free bang trims! read more

I had emailed Virtue about my experience a week ago with pictures and asked for a partial or full refund and got no response from management. The only thing she offered was a free consultation (no thanks). That did nothing the first time because nothing was explained to me. I got hair fixed in Huntington, West Virginia, surprisingly for less than half the price ($145) by a non-pretentious sweetheart who went to a tiny school hair school in Appalachia. She explained how to create dimension in my hair, which I did not get from my specialist, and did a fantastic job with only two days notice. She also mentioned that my hair didn't lift well, which I explained to my stylist at Virtue as well, but got no response in return and told me the blonding turned out fine. I was hoping for more, I guess. Next time, if I want to spend nearly $400 on my hair, I'll go to New York. I lived there for eight years and at least everyone is a straight shooter and at least you get what you pay for. read more

Worst hair color experience ever had, yet charged the most I have ever paid. In what universe does a hair stylist think a woman WANTS her gray roots to show? Virtue has beautiful mirrors at each station, problem is they don't really provide sufficient light. So when stylist says, "may be too much gray at top so you may have to come back to have me fix it" you should go outside and look in a mirror. It was not until I got to my car and really looked that I realized I still had gray roots over my entire head! Shocked she even key me leave salon looking like that. Called first thing next morning, and was told she could not get me in until a week later. Clearly this salon does not take responsibility for their screw ups. So buyer beware! If they screw up, it's on you!! ******** I notice a month after my horrible experience at Virtue that TJ posted a concerned response. I am curious, TJ, why you have not sent that private message, or why you never contacted me directly. Your salon has my phone number, address, and email. I did receive an insulting post card from Brittany so happy I visited her at your salon. Apparently she was able to completely forget the mess she made of my hair! Seems you responded to review for appearance sake, as I have not been contacted or refunded for this diaster to my hair. Obviously, TJ, I did not walk around for weeks with my hair left like this, so no you cannot fix my hair. NO, I had to spend more, than the $350 spent in your salon, to fix my hair. First let me say that this salon is amazing. I was in a bind and needed my hair done before vacation and a big event and my normal stylist had to cancel due to sickness, I rushed in a panic to call a very popular chain salon which shall remain nameless but it is located in Dublin and a couple other suburbs and they assured me they would be able to assist in my hair needs and well....this was not the case unfortunately so again I was panicking. I had been referred to call Virtue Vegan and I am so happy and blessed I did. Julie at the desk was sooo understanding and she really worked to get me in for a color correction and cut. Lindsey my stylist was Amazing, she worked so hard to make me feel better and correct what the previous stylist had wrecked. After reading such great reviews, and sending my husband to Vice Barber (he loves), it took me a few months to actually decide to get my hair cut, spend the $, and make an appointment. I was in yesterday after work for an appointment with Lexi. I was greeted warmly by Jacquie and offered a refreshment, choosing peach tea. Delicious. The shop itself is cute and funky. Lexi greeted me with a smile and we went to her station. My hair was past my shoulders and I explained it hadn't been cut in awhile and I had just been wearing it curly/wavy with product. I said I wanted to go back to a bob, because it works for me. Lexi washed, conditioned, cut, blow dried, and flat-ironed my hair to perfection. Absolutely worth $40. She offered up a texture powder to make it fuller on top (for fine hair). She's a great stylist and very sweet person. My entire first visit was spot on and I will definitely return. I love this salon! I'm vegan so I was so happy to find a place that doesn't test on animals and cares about the environment. The friendly staff and cute vintage items all over the store make each visit great. I've been going to Colleen White at Virtue Salon since early 2018. She was the first hair person I found to properly complete full highlights. I leave each visit with her feeling confident and glowing. I think some people are shocked by their pricing.. but those individuals don't realize how much a true good hair cut and color costs. I've been getting my full highlights for over 10 years so I'm prepared to spend a few hundred on my hair. This salon also helps support local vegan shops which is really important to the community. Amy cuts my hair but everyone here is so amazing -- from the minute you walk through the door they make you feel welcome. Since they moved to their new space their décor is so fun and comfortable, lots of seating areas to relax and they bring you coffee, tea, or water if you want. I went in almost a year ago to chop off a good amount of hair to donate, and Amy actually sent it off to the charity for me. Truly, I never write reviews for anything BUT I have to drop in a nice word for Virtue (a VEGAN salon, which is a godsend) and specifically Jasmine, who is hands down the best stylist I have ever seen in my life -- and I've been getting my hair done for 20 years. Long story short (lol!) I ended up having to cut some of my own hair due to a horrible color disaster (I know, sacrilege) and made a first-time appointment with Jasmine to get it evened out, fixed, anything--my best friend's wedding is next week and it was in such a state of shambles I didn't expect anything amazing. BUT: not only did she give me the absolute cutest wavy bob (I'm a long-hair girl through and through, never thought short would look good on me), she salvaged my damaged strands with an incredible deep conditioning treatment and really took the time to sit down with me and talk it out, answer my questions, and just genuinely be kind and supportive. Virtue is my salon now, I'm so happy to have found it and a stylist I know I can trust! If I could put 50 stars here I would. read more

My ginger locks have been washed, cut, and styled! My salon visit was pulled straight from a Yelp fairy tale! So let me tell you the story... My previous hairdresser (and friend) moved to California so I felt all alone in this world without someone to care for my hair! So I turned to my fellow yelpers to ask who I should turn to in this time of need. A few people mentioned Virtue Salon, and it was close enough to my house that I thought I would give it a go! I had an appointment with Claire and was immediately in love with the place. I walked into a great, hip salon with the receptionist asking if I wanted tea or coffee or anything. Then Claire (my hairdresser) came and got me and it was a match made in heaven!! :) She listened to what I wanted (which never makes any sense and usually goes along the lines of "uhhh yeah whatever you think, hmm maybe like an inch or five off? yeah layers, sure, whatever you think....") So she went ahead and washed, cut, and styled my hair! The salon not only has great stylists, but also amazing products! It left me sticking my head into everyone's face for the next couple hours saying..."see, ugh smell it, so good yeah? yeah?! yeah??!!!" So I definitely recommend stopping in here to try out this Clintonville salon. They have talented stylists, friendly staff, reasonable prices (Haircut, including wash, for $30), a great location, cute set-up, amazing products... and well my ramblings of awe could go on and on! read more

I know what a lot of people will be thinking,but I would say 3 stars is appropriate in my experience. I have been a few times and the first few times my hairdresser (I wont say who cuz she is awesome) was not "able to complete" my appointment. What? Are you kidding me? My last hairdresser would make sure that I am completely satisfied yet at this salon I'm passed around so that she can fit someone else in? That is not good service. The real reason I even made a review was because I made an appointment, was told the time, went in, and "We tried to call you. You missed your appointment". I dont know what happened but they sent the wrong time, so I missed my time. I was told to come back 4 hours later. THERE WENT MY DAY! I made an early appointment because of my schedule. I did go back to get my haircut because I needed it done but the price wasn't even discounted. SO unprofessional. I will not be going back but I do know that it is not the hairdressers fault, I fault the owner and receptionist. And for the price I'll gladly go somewhere else, which is a shame because I liked that they were vegan. read more

Sarah was talkative, professional, and asked for my opinion throughout the haircut to make sure I was happy with how it turned out. Considering I made a minor change--some bangs--I was pretty pleased by this. I really like Virtue for the following reasons: - It's close to where I live in Clintonville - The products used as all-natural and do not test on animals - The hours are flexible; Virtue is closed for the lunch hour but has morning and evening appointments - The staff is really friendly and helpful - Bang trims are free I'm pretty sure I'll be back to Virtue again.
