I had Virtue Cider before at other breweries and locations that had it on tap so when I was visiting my nephew in the Holland area and we were going down to South Haven I made sure that it was a stop on our tour. They do have signs for it on the highway, however I would definitely suggest using your GPS as it is out in the country. Pulling into their parking lot, I was not expecting to see the large barns that we did but it looks pretty cool to me so I was excited. I was actually breaking one of Ben's and my rules and that is to not tour new breweries without the other one, but since ciders are mostly for me, he said it was okay for me to go with my family and he wouldn't hold it against me. LOL Inside was pretty cool looking obviously like an old barn revamped. You walk through the area where you can purchase things to go first and then the bar to order is directly in front of you. They do offer flights that are pre-arranged and you can order separate small glasses if you would like to try anything else. I do remember trying something that was not on the flight. Unfortunately, I cannot remember the name of it, but it was my favorite and of course because it was my favorite, they didn't have it to go. Story of my life. It was a super sunny day that when we were there and they have outdoor seating areas where there are some live animals wandering around and in enclosures. Looks like it could be really relaxing and fun to spend the afternoon at. I have been here a couple of times when driving up to Grand Rapids. Great place with very friendly staff. Staff took the time to explain their setup. Beautiful place to have a drink. We stopped by after a long day of shopping in downtown Holland. My mom wanted to try cider. The property is beautiful, with a tasting room, large outdoor seating area with some lawn games and a trail. I had my dog so we weren't allowed in the tasting room but found a nice table outside and set up our umbrella. We each ordered a flight and enjoyed the beautiful weather. Two flights are available-I don't know if you can create your own-and are presented beautifully. I liked the descriptions for each cider and the numbering to keep us on track. We were quite slow and stayed after close. The employees were super nice about our being there late. I had a great time at Virtue and highly recommend a visit to end your day out. read more

We absolutely loved sitting outside on a Friday afternoon and listening to some live music. I was excited to visit here with our two dogs, and after trying a few Virtue ciders from Binny's back home in the Chicago area. The vibe is relaxed and we loved the rustic charm of this location, complete with chickens roaming. Inside the taproom is beautifully featured with high ceilings and warm wood colors. It appears you can make reservations for certain seating areas. I tried a Farm Flight and then ordered the Mitten, a light, crisp cider aged in bourbon barrels. The Blueberry Mitten was good too. The Mitten ciders were not too sweet or tart for my taste. They have light charcuterie type food you could buy and we tried the cows milk spreadable cheese with raspberry crisp crackers. It was a little challenging to eat outside on a windy day, so we tried to keep our food and drink weighed down. The online ordering was a little confusing, but we just went inside to confirm we ordered what we wanted. Afterwards, we took a walk on one of the trails before heading out. The owner was sitting nearby and he and the rest of the staff we encountered were very friendly and helpful. Such a fun place! This was one of the highlights of our trip. It's a little ways out of town but so worth it. We were immediately greeted at the check in desk where they gave us a couple menus and explained the property to us and sat us at a cute little spot with a couple adirondack chairs. We ordered both flights offered, the farmhouse and the salute. The ciders were so delicious, we had to purchase a couple bottles to take home to share with friends and family. We brought our dog with us and they even brought us a water bowl with cold water for him. One of the servers came around and offered to take photos of us which was such a thoughtful touch! After we finished our cider, we walked the trail out to see the pigs. Overall, wonderful experience and would recommend to anyone! I wish we lived closer so I could come back soon. read more

My friends and I recently stumbled upon Virtue Cider during Apple Fest weekend and was pleasantly surprised by the event! We were welcomed into the festival with a free tote bag, pint glass and the opportunity to listen to live music (on the most beautiful fall day) while trying some of their specialty ciders. My girlfriends and I just stopped by to check it out so we could plan a more purposeful day, but the facility was so big, we just grabbed a drink and enjoyed the live music! What a cool neat experience! So I love cider, and if you're like me, this is the place to be. We got two different flights of different ciders in all ranges of flavors! The first flight we got was I think the 101, which was $20 for 6 ciders. The star of the show for me was the cherry cider, but others at the table enjoyed the blueberry cider. I also liked the dry ciders offered. The other flight we got, the Small Batch, was $25 for 6 ciders, which we did not like as much. I'd say, if you're gonna get a flight go for the 101 tasting. In terms of food, we got the fish dip (based on previous reviews) and the white bean dip. The fish dip very much lived up to its hyped reviews. We gobbled it down quickly! The white bean dip likewise rocked but the star of the show was easily fish dip. After our tasting, we visited the gift shop and walked the grounds. There were some beautiful trails around the area! I swear I've reviewed Virtue Cider already but here it goes again - worth the second round ;) This cidery is extremely kid-friendly and charming for a few-hour visit. It gives off cozy fall vibes all year round with their farm animals, outdoor seating spaces, picnic benches, and small trails in the woods. I wouldn't say that I'm big on cider, but I love what they offer here. It's the perfect spot to get a flight and find something for both sweet and dry palettes. I'm also obsessed with the architecture of the old Belgian horse barns and their adorable potbelly pigs. What better entertainment could you ask for with kiddos in tow? I definitely should have brought my dog because with the bonfire we were able to chill outside the whole time even with it in the 50's. I tried the cherry (always a fave) and the blueberry (not too sweet and good notes). My friend had the mulled cider - it was much drier than mine. She was really happy with it but it was too dry for me... I think I was expecting more of an apple cider? Hopefully they'll have something sweet and warm next time I am here. Let me be clear: the cider at Virtue is beyond exceptional. It is, in my opinion, the best in the Midwest -- and that's not faint praise, that's just geography. It's also easily comparable to what you'll find in Europe, for those of us who've had the pleasure (or the miles). The new Lapinette is crisp, complex, and could almost convince you to move to a barn. Almost. The staff, as always, are lovely. Warm, helpful, and the kind of people you'd want to be seated near at a very long wedding. Now, the food. Or rather -- the absence of it. The menu, as far as I can tell, no longer exists. It's less a menu and more a rumor. I've heard whispers that it's returning this summer, and I sincerely hope that's true. Because without food, Virtue lacks something it once had: a sense of place, of purpose, of identity. The cider deserves a supporting cast, not a box of grocery store cheese. If you haven't been, go. Have a tasting, have a glass. Get a Lapinette. Bring a snack. But please, let us all cross our fingers and hope the kitchen finds its way back -- because this place, when it was firing on all cylinders, was something rare. It still could be. read more

My little family visited Virtue Cider on a Wednesday during the afternoon. It is child and dog friendly which is a huge bonus! Your dog must be on a leash and water bowls are available to wet their whistle. Chickens roam the grounds, and bunnies and ducks are in houses - my kiddo loved this feature! There is trail to walk if you feel inclined. All the staff were incredibly friendly/informative, and the service was speedy. The vibe of the entire establishment is fun, casual, and relaxed. There are picnic tables and greenhouses (which I think you may need to reserve). You can order inside or use the QR code at the outdoor tables - convenient! We ordered a cider flight. The Mitten was my favorite! We also tried the frozé which was refreshing! We got our kiddo the apple cider; I took a quick sip (shh...), and it was delicious. When you walk in to the indoor area, you enter through the merchandise shop. They offer a large variety of bottles ciders. They offer flights and a variety of cider selections. Virtue Cider had been on my list for years - I'm not sure if I've ever had any of its cider "in the wild" before, but I usually am around Saugatuck/Fennville when I make my yearly trip to the west side of the state. We finally got to check it out yesterday. I did my research here on Yelp ahead of time and noticed that (in the summer, at least) it's outdoor dining only. You can make a reservation on Resy, but for a Tuesday we didn't need one. One you arrive, check in with the hostess, and you can choose to sit under the pergola, which is what we chose (which was in a more shady area, and nice) or on the lawn area, which has picnic tables and umbrellas. I've heard that for the winter they have small glass "greenhouses" you can rent, too. The one caveat I will say is that they have outdoor bathrooms, aka port-a-potties ... I wasn't a fan of that, but they were clean, and they also have a handwashing station next to them, too. Originally we were going to get the flight but it was $18 for six ciders, which is quite a lot, so instead we each got an individual cider. My boyfriend got the Framboise, which is on tap, and I got the Peach cider, which comes in a bottle. Both were very good although the Framboise was a little bit dry; I had heard that a lot of Virtue's ciders were dry or semi-dry. You order from your table via QR code (they use Toast Tab) and then the employees bring you your drinks. It was like $13 before tip for two drinks. They also have small bites, too, like charcuterie boards, crackers, etc. In addition, they have a trail you can walk and some animals - we saw this huge bunny who was taking a nap in its cage, and it was pretty adorable. Overall, Virtue was a cute place, I'd come back if I was with people who hadn't been there before (i.e., maybe a girls' trip to the west side of the state), but now that I've been there, I probably don't need to return for a bit. read more

I visited Virtue as a friend had recommended their winter snowshoe tour. By the time we came, the warmer weather had basically melted a fair amount of it so we didn't need snowshoes at all. We just strolled around with our boots. Francoise was a fantastic tour guide - super knowledgeable & loves doggos (our friend brought her pup along for the tour!) We then spent the rest of the afternoon at the fire pit. I tried the flight which was 6 - 2oz pours of the Core ciders: Brut, Rose, Pear, MI Apple, Southcider, MI Cherry. It was driest to sweetest & I'm definitely more of a dry cider fan. I highly recommend the tour and reserving a fire pit or greenhouse! The greenhouses are especially cute. But for old-hats like ourselves, the small batch flight is a great way to dive deeper. After the flight, my husband got the flagship cherry cider which is his favorite and never disappoints. He was pleased as punch. I decided to get the special 'Those Women from MI' cider AND IT WAS THE BEST CIDER IVE EVER HAD! The Lavender and butterfly pea pollen came together for the most delightfully floral and dry cider ever and I couldn't get enough. We've been coming to Virtue for many years. The cider was perfection as always today, but imagine our surprise when we planned to be eating lunch and there's no longer a kitchen. I nearly cried. This is a really beautiful space and it's definitely a full 'cider mill' experience with access to their orchards and look at animals. I was left a little disappointed in a couple things-- firstly, we made reservations for the walkway (the covered tables along the side of the building) but we were seated at a regular picnic table-- in the mud, I might add. There was also a huge, wrapped up umbrella in the middle of the table so we had to keep ducking our heads around it to talk to each other. I don't really get the point of making reservations for one area if they're going to put you wherever. I also didn't love that their flight options were pre-determined; you couldn't try sips of anything and had to commit to the flight for the smallest possible taster. Everything else I believe was 10 oz or more. We tried all three of the flights on the menu and while there were some really good ones (the peach and the Mitten, especially), some of those funkier ones were out there even for me as a big cider fan. I much prefer a tasting room atmosphere where I can actually taste! I know that sounds like a lot of complaining but I actually would recommend this place! Booked a private greenhouse for a bachelorette party of 7 people about 2 months in advance ($104). We were booked into a greenhouse which was cute. When it came to ordering our drinks, this is where the experience was really faltered. Once we ordered we were asked to pay and tip upfront, I paid about an 18% tip on a $60 bill ($82) 7 drinks, 4 of one Frosé, 3 of another. About 10 minutes later a waiter came back to say they were out of the Frosés and asked if we wanted to wait 30 minutes for the next batch or if we all wanted the Lavender Cider. It was odd to assume we'd all 7 want that cider out of the entire menu, and we had another reservation at Modales in 50 minutes so we asked to put in a different order. We waited 40 minutes on the new order and went to check at the front. There was an 'oh you didn't get your drinks' and no direct apology or acknowledgment that we had waited quite long. By this time the Rose was ready and we all received the 7 of whatever was most frozen at the time. Given the wait, our next reservation was in 10 minutes so we had about half our Frosés and had to depart. The oddest part was there was no offer of discount to our drinks, or return/adjust my gratuity, just that they'd update the charged price to reflect the new drinks. read more

We visited Virtue Cider before the pandemic and just recently. Our family has been taking a summer vacation in the area for 15 years. We rent a big house. We stayed in Fennville this year. Virtue was about a five minute drive. They are doing well. The picnic tables outside had many visitors, families among them. Dogs are welcome outside, and we saw a couple of Yorkies and a bigger fellow who wanted to play with the chickens. According to news reports, Virtue, a craft operation, sold itself to Anheuser-Busch, and then the founder bought it back. I am not sure if it is related to the Bud Light boycott (which I am impressed by, though my cause would be the opposite; I would not have thought they could sustain it, nor produce the effect, though it may be simply that the beer was not great to begin with, not due to the reactionary message they are trying to promote, against trans folks). Apparently A-B has not done well with its micro-breweries. They are unloading them, which is fine; these are not the same type of business, the mom and pop enterprise on the one hand and the international conglomerate on the other hand. Virtue has gotten bigger. They built out various aspects, as indicated by signage. Our party of nine (a group of five had departed due to teen children having activities back home) had two flights, actually two of each, for four total. Then we ordered a few full glasses. We had cheese and charcuterie. The pours were modest and the serving size on the food. That is not a complaint. It is what it is, and you are not likely to come here expecting to consume a full meal. We sat outside. We just fit. The ciders displayed a range of tastes. Some were more fruit forward, others stronger with alcohol content, and a couple with pronounced terroir, and one had a bit of a cleaning fluid profile (not bad; it was very clean). If you don't like cider, you might be converted. If you do like cider, you will be impressed by the range of their offerings. Service is modern. You scan a QR code. The waitress came out promptly. She was kept busy. During the visit, we also stopped into two beer breweries. Women in the group went to a wine tasting as well. I'll close on the comment that the restrooms in a repurposed shipping container are the best restrooms in a repurposed shipping container. Of course, I cannot claim a sample size that is great, and it might be limited to this single experience. Whoever built those has an excellent design and high standards. What's not to love about Virtue Cider?! The ciders are great, they're sustainable, it's on a farm with adorable animals and their outdoor space is amazing. We went on a recommendation from a friend and drove over to check it out. Since it was our first visit we decided to order both cider flight options and we paired it with their cheese & charcuterie board. The barrel tasting flight definitely tasted stronger than the classic tasting. The standouts on that one was the old spot, mitten, and cherry mitten. On the classic side, we loved all of them except the brut & rose. If you had to pick, I'd say go with the classic tasting. The charcuterie board had a really healthy amount of goodies and it was wonderful to munch on between cider sips. Both the fire pits and the greenhouses are great but I highly recommend booking the heated greenhouses on a super cold day. What a charming place! First time at a Cidery and honestly it was awesome... Came with a large group from Chicago and it was definitely a nice change of pace from Citylife. Its about a 2 hour drive and upon our arrival we were greeted with a can of Cider and taken on a tour of the grounds. Its a peaceful backdrop to enjoy the afternoon and they have rabbits, lamb and a pig there too. Was sad to hear that after the Season is over they sometimes turn them into food and are not truly pets! Please reconsider this Virtue! Seems we came a week or so early though missing the large batches of apples physically onsite and the production of apples being pressed. It was still cool to hear how they use various types of locally grown apples and that they do not add any extra sugars to the brew.
