In March my wife and I decided it was finally time to get a deck built on our TH after almost 10 years. I realized it probably wasn't the best time to be building a deck with wood prices sky high, but figured we'd see what we could find. I contacted 5 companies to come out and give me a quote. Out of those 5 only Virginia Deck Builders and 1 other sent me a quote for the deck within 24 hours. And out of both of them only Virginia Deck Builders replied to every email question I sent (even after hours). My wife being a graphic artist was very impressed by the multiple autocad renders of what the deck would look like that were included with the quote. Nikolay answered all our questions a long the way and filled out the HOA approval form for us. From start to to finish everything took about 3 months (permits, HOA approval, inspections etc). We did run into 1 snag where we had to make an adjustment to how the deck was supported which increased the price slightly but Nikolay was willing to split the cost with me. After the deck was finished I had to have Virginia Deck Builders come up and do a few things that probably should have been done without me asking (cleaning up the work site better etc). There is still a couple minor things I still need them to do but they haven't stopped us from enjoying the deck. Also as we know no review can be 100% perfect my only real complaint so far is the Trex Select deck seems to be scratching very easily, obviously not an issue with the building of it, but I sort of wish I had been warned that it scratches easily and maybe I would have maybe gone with the Trex Transcend. read more

The only time that Nikolay Jantic, the owner, was responsive was when he came to pick up my 50% deposit check. 2/10/23 - I paid $3,752 (50%) to have 20 rotting boards replaced on my wood deck, power washing, and staining. Despite repeated calls, I received no info on scheduling. 4/18/23 - Finally a 3-man crew showed up and replaced the rotting boards and one upright post, but they left all the old wood in a pile behind the house. 5/15/23 - I was concerned about safety and HOA rules in regard to the pile of wood boards, so I paid 123Junk to haul it away, I also called Jim the Handyman who agreed to come this week and complete the project, because I was only getting the run around from Nikolay about when they would return. If you choose Virginia Deck Builder, expect total lack of communication and long delays in receiving the product you paid for. read more

Called and scheduled and estimate for a Friday afternoon, almost a week ago. Got a follow up confirmation email that everything was set. Rush home to ensure I best traffic and meet the estimator. Person doesn't show. No phone call, no email, nothing. Call their number, and connected to some random service line where I have to give a bunch of personal info to even get validation of what I am talking about. After 10 min of that, the person on the phone finally says they'll contact my "tech" but cannot give me a name or number. Said that person will contact me in 5 min. Guess what, that didn't happen. I'm had to call back and start all over again. I gave up and cancelled the estimate. Don't schedule work throigh these people. It's clearly a scam. I'm sure the positive reviews are fake and bots. read more

We had actually sought a proposal a year ago at the beginning of COVID, but decided to put off our deck project until this spring. Nikolay stuck with us and really stood out when we compared his overall proposal with three others. Several of whom took weeks to come look at our project. Meanwhile, Nikolay had already submitted his proposal! Pros: Nikolay was very responsive and helpful as we figured out what exactly we really wanted. I always felt he guided us as if he was building this for himself, from a quality perspective. If we had ideas that needed flushed out, and/or put to rest, he helped. He knows what looks great and what doesn't. For example. We were planning to leave underneath our deck as it was originally - not very appealing to the eye. Nikolay showed up one day with some stones and landscape fabric to put underneath and said let's do this. They then built a small retaining wall to hold everything in place - at no cost to us! We are thrilled and very happy with our deck now. Nitpicks: Could they have started a few weeks sooner and proactively updated us of the slight delays? Sure. Did it really matter in the end? No. Every contractor worth hiring should have a backlog at the moment. This was understandable because several of his crew had come down with COVID, and given many supply constraints, they got a little behind schedule. I would NOT recommend this company. As of 3/12/24, we are beginning legal proceedings for a ~$4k refund after the company pulled out of the contract and has since refused to contact us. Facts: In March '23, we chose VA Decks for a $37k three season room project. They were not the cheapest option, but we liked their design and plan the best. Within a day of signing the contract, the owner (Nikolay) came to our house personally to pick up the 50% deposit check (which we have been informed is now an illegal deposit % in the state of VA). Then, we didn't hear from the company for two months. In May, after a number of attempts to reach the company, I submitted a complaint to the BBB and left a review on Google. Within an hour, Nikolay reached out saying there was a misunderstanding and that he had submitted the permits and we were just waiting for them to clear. Not completely untrue, as he had submitted the permits that day (I assume after my complaint/review, and before contacting me). I will give them the benefit of the doubt that the delays in the coming months were out of their hands, as permitting in the City of Alexandria can be cumbersome. However, the company not once reached out with an update; rather, I was constantly having to check in to make sure the permitting office got what they needed to move the permit forward. When the permit did finally come through, in the Fall, the company came out within a week to tear down our existing porch and install the new one. In their favor, the team worked efficiently to get the new porch up - and it appears to be of decent quality. [Though the work crew did insist on going to the bathroom behind our shed, despite having access to a bathroom, and leaving trash all over our yard.] Once the porch was installed and the second payment was paid (35%), the company went dark again. It took MONTHS for them to admit that they were not going to be able to install the windows/screens, per the contract. And, since agreeing to cancel the remainder of the contract and agreeing upon a refund amount, I have not been able to reach the company, despite numerous texts, voicemails, and emails. Nikolay, the owner, hits the "on a call - will call you back" auto message when I call, and then has never once returned my call or texts. At the time of this writing, we are waiting on a $4k refund (the remaining 15% ($5k) was never paid, so the outstanding work not done is around $9k). Besides the horrendous communication of this company and the near fraudulent business practices, a couple of things to note: - Their claim of a high BBB and AngiesList rating are false; they are intentionally misrepresenting their customer satisfaction. - They continuously breached contract. The contract stated that they would begin work within 3 weeks and the job would be finished no later than 6 months from the signing of the contract. Neither of those things took place. When I tried to cancel the contract, Nikolay was evasive and immediately made progress. - There is no project management team. It is completely overseen by Nikolay, who is impossible to reach. - Their place of business does not exist. The Holland Lane address is a condo building in Alexandria, so there is no location to go to get answers. All in all, this has been a painful and regrettable experience that I do not wish on other consumers - hence the lengthy review. We are working with HD Exteriors to have the remainder of the work completed, and we are very happy with their professionalism so far and their communication. The remaining work will cost modestly more than that contracted with VA Decks. All I can hope is that we eventually get the refund for the work that was not completed. read more

This is mostly a duplicate review from what I posted on g-maps. I came here when I started looking for someone to remove and replace a very old deck in the middle of a townhouse row, at the top of a hill, with not much room behind the backyard. I got a couple quotes and Nick's was very competitive. On our first meeting he gave me a simplified run-down of the process, which goes something like this - 50% deposit up front, apply for permits, wait for permits, rip out existing structure, frame, pay 40% of the balance (or maybe it was 30%), finish building deck, any extra work (I needed an electrical outlet), pay remaining balance. After a few days of back and forth making sure the project was correctly scoped, we agreed on price, signed a contract, and I did give him the 50% deposit. Then came the wait. Now, this is something that was out of Nick's control but was frustrating and concerning for me as I was already in for several thousand dollars. I did get a few emails in the meantime saying that permits were still pending. Still, there is some discomfort not knowing when the project might kick-off. Assuming you are also Fairfax County, there is a website you can go to on your own (no cost) to check on the permit yourself. I know that Nick was never dragging his feet because the same day that my permits were approved, he called to schedule the work. Two days later, the crew were at my house and tore the monstrosity of an old deck out in no time flat. As I said earlier, my house backs up to a hill, in the middle of a row, with a narrow walk way, and the nearest parking spot for their trailer was about 150 feet. This was not an issue for them. And there is another thing that was way above and beyond the call of duty -- as they were ripping out the existing wood they uncovered a huge wasp nest inside the exterior wall to my house. The guys took a few stings but they pulled the nest out, patched up the destruction the wasps had caused, and kept on working. Real tough dudes. Now the project is done. The quality is fantastic. The deck, which is hybrid wood+Trex is very nice to be on. The construction of the frame is outstanding. Absolutely no concerns with the integrity and/or strength to hold a party outside (not that I want that many people at my house). I can't think of anyone who is actually excited to spend money on a new deck, but I had to one way or the other. And although spending the money on a new deck wasn't exciting, I am excited about my new deck. I love being outside on it chillin' & grillin'. I definitely got what I paid for, and it is worth it. read more

Nickolay called me the moment that I posted to Yelp. His crew came down with COVID. Whether an excuse or the truth, (even if true, a simple text is needed as the business owner) his crew came the day i posted to Yelp and got to work. A couple things changed from the original design because of structural issues with our existing deck. Because of the changes, we decided to add on to the original design and add steps going to both parts of the yard - the addition was completed right away. Our project was to add stairs from the existing deck to the ground. It took 8 days to complete with one or two men there at a time each day starting at 9. The crew did a great job, were nice, and cleaned up afterwards. They didn't work in odd hours which is also helpful. Be ready for quality work, but likely delayed communications. CAUTION: Fraud, theft. We hired Nikolay Jantic of Virginia Deck Builders in October 2023 to complete a three-seasons room porch remodel. The contract stipulated that the project would be done by February 2024 by a licensed contractor. Nikolay's license (2705177868, Deck Dream LLC doing business as Virginia Deck Builders) was revoked by Virginia DPOR in December 2023 and as of May, he is UNLICENSED (https://www.dpor.virginia.gov/LicenseLookup). He has multiple violations listed on the DPOR website. To date, our project is still unfinished and we are owed significant funds. Nikolay is unresponsive to communications. The company has committed fraud and theft and I do not recommend their services. Our experience has been similar to other one-star reviews. read more

I requested the permit in June 2023 and the company agreed to facilitate. After a year-long battle of receiving sporadic updates on the permit and being misled when we did receive updates, we decided to officially cancel the project on 4/15/2024. Our experience was absolutely fantastic. Nikolay (owner) and Phil were heavily involved from start to finish - he helped us with colors, layout, permits, inspections, multiple renderings to help us make our decision, and was here constantly to check in on his crew (who was also fantastic). He was always very responsive, and in multiple cases has gone the extra mile to make sure we were happy. The deck was built exactly on schedule, and the workmanship is superb. Several neighbors have already sought quotes after seeing our finished deck. Like any project, there are some delays, complications, changes, etc. - but even with multiple projects going Nikolay and VA Deck Builders moved schedules, crews, etc to get things done on time and to our complete satisfaction. From the very first visit (June 8th) to the finishing touches on our project (July 26th), Nikolay and his friendly Virginia Deck Builders team were truly a pleasure to work with! We wanted a new composite deck to replace the original wooden deck of our 21 year-old townhome. Of the 4 contractor proposals we received, Nikolay's was reasonably in the middle of the range. Not only that, his proposal was the only one with computer renderings of the design (quite accurate in hindsight) from several vantage points. He was also the only contractor to recommend a darker border color (Trex Spiced Rum) to match the cocktail rails but contrast with the lighter decking color (Trex Rocky Harbor). We're happy we went with his idea because it turned out beautifully! Communication was excellent and responsive throughout, whether by email, text, or phone. This proved valuable and reassuring as this was our first project requiring a HOA submission package, county permit and inspections. Nikolay helped with all of the logistics, which made for a seamless experience. Invoicing also went smoothly via email. After the project started with tearing down the old deck on July 19th, Nikolay and his team finished the new deck exactly one week later! We couldn't imagine a better experience and outcome. Neighbors have also noticed and inquired. My family loves the new deck and we look forward to spending more and more time on it as the Fall weather approaches. We started our search for a deck company to renovate our deck. The floorboards on our original deck were not in good condition, but the railings were. The previous owners used horrible paint to cover up the floorboards, but it chipped after a month of moving in. After receiving quotes from 4 different companies, we finally decided on Birginia Deck builders. The owner, Nikolay, was the person who came to the house the quote. We weren't exactly sure the path we wanted to take, but he supplied me with 4-5 different quotes to show me the different prices points. His estimates were clear and detailed with the cost for each part of the work. I communicated with him through text and email. His responsiveness was beyond exceptional. Usually responding within minutes, but never more than a few hours. Some of the other companies we received quotes with didn't even follow-up with the quotes they sent. We decided to remove/replace the floorboards and top of the railing with Trex. Since the railings were in good shape so we decided to keep them, have them power washed, sanded and stained. Last minute I requested a quote to create a new opening with stairs to the lawn. Nikolay was able to start work less than 2 weeks from when we decided the exact path. Tasks had to be done in parts (powerwashing, drying wood, sanding, staining). The final product was completed in 1 week. Throughout the work I would send questions or concerns to Nikolay. Again he was quick to respond or come on site to discuss. We are very happy with the final product. Nikolay worked with us through the whole process, answering any and all questions. I would HIGHLY recommend Virginia Deck Builders to anyone. We can finally enjoy our deck! There was only one time I was happy to be home as they were working to make an adjustment to the work. The framing in the corners was going to be at a 90 degree angle and we wanted it to be cut at a 45 degree angle. They were quickly able to remedy this. Pictures in red are before. Then said we should get an estimate in 2-3 days. 4 weeks later - still havent heard back from them. Called multiple times, and we were told they would call us back. At one time, I even told them "just tell me if you dont want to or cant do this project, so I can find someone else", and still nothing. Nikolay and his crew have been fantastic. They replaced our deck that was almost thirty years old and brought it up to code. It looks amazing. I would highly recommend these guys. Also, they were working while we were out of town, and the GFI breaker tripped cutting power to the outlets outside our home. We had no way of turning the power back on for several days when we returned home, and Nikolay brought his generator out, allowing them to finish the deck before we came back. I can't say enough good things about them. The final product looks wonderful, the crew worked incredibly hard, and customer service/communication were outstanding. Was initially impressed with the professionalism and ease of scheduling plus having the worksite looked over, though it did take several weeks before they were able to come out. Since then, however, I have been unable to get in contact to receive the quote or schedule the actual work. I've wasted enough time and don't understand the point of coming out to gather the information for a quote, but then failing to actually provide it or do the work. Edit: I'm revising my score upward because the business contacted me back and cited software issues with the lack of timely quote, which may very well be the case. However, the lack of response to attempts to contact them were still concerning and prevents a higher rating. read more

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! I signed a contract last fall, and as soon as I did, Nikolay stopped responding to any of my messages. After two months I asked for my deposit back. It took me weeks to get the check sent to me -- and then it bounced at my bank. I assumed the company went out of business, but then I got a marketing email offering me a discount for a referral. I renewed my demand for my deposit, which Nikolay ignored until I posted a bad (but accurate) review of my experience. Within 10 minutes, he emailed me to say that he would send me a check -- but that was several weeks ago and I still haven't received it. So very frustrating. Stay away. read more
