However, on about 50% of my visits I have been either ignored completely, treated rather rudely, or some combination. This doesn't seem to be based on how busy the store is- I've really only ever had one or two other customers in there at the same time I was in. I have no idea why, unless it is the difference in my apparel (work vs. casual). I left the other day knowing I won't be back. I can get good wine elsewhere without leaving feeling badly about the interaction. Too bad.

He offered me a bottle of the same wine as an apology. So I went and picked it up. I also met the owner Mr. Rande Jenus and he was very apologetic for what happened. Although I had almost forgotten about it, I was happy that Wine Cabinet whose first impressions on the phone, of the wine tasting lady, were very good, gave me another good one by showing a nice gesture. It is after all, "Better late than never."

There there is an Olive Garden nearby so it isn't out by itself, even if it feels like it. The weather was beautiful, so we grabbed a high top in the bar area, overlooking a nice little pond behind the restaurant. The service in the bar was surprisingly good, despite the bar itself being pretty crowded and nearly every table around it being populated. The food was served quickly and they allowed us to customize to our liking (TIP: pay the nominal upcharge to replace your existing side dish to Brussels sprouts with bacon and spiced pecans! Or get it as a side to share) I had the Hickory Grilled Hanger Steak with mashed potatoes and a field greens salad, except no potatoes. The salad was amazing (it has dates in it for a sweetness to balance the sour of the dressing) and the medium rare steak was phenomenal. We each had a glass of beer -- the Pale Face Summer Wheat on draft. It is a classic German Hefeweizen and described as "malty with banana and clove flavors." I tested the banana on my first sip. It was a solid choice. The next day, we worked a 15 hour day without stopping to eat. By the time we finished, we were so tired that we agreed to return. I ordered the same steak and my coworker followed my recommendation. He agreed that this is the steak to order. (even if he ordered his more well done than mine). For the second visit, we ordered the bread pudding for dessert instead of beer with dinner. I suggest splitting the dessert. Don't get me wrong, it was fantastic, but was definitely shareable after a full steak meal.

Last time, I learned "Total Wine and More" doesn't have the "and More" in Virginia. This time I learned this place carries only liquor. This seems to be the place to come locally if you like your bourbon, as shelves on one entire wall, and about half of the back wall, were devoted to it. The selection was decent, though a large portion of it was numerous varieties of the most popular brands. Prices were typically a buck or two above competitive for the whiskey/bourbon/scotch selections in general. I liked their rum selection too. Everything is well laid out here, and it's bright and clean, a good place to include in your liquor shopping itinerary.

But, the business seems to struggle from a fundamental tension at the core of its identity. Classic cocktails are just $7, and we went with the Sazerac-style drink, which reminded me a lot of an Old Fashioned--smooth and well-balanced. The food really stood out. The Chicken 65 was absolutely incredible--I haven't stopped thinking about it and was honestly tempted to go back just to grab some to-go. The cauliflower bites were also solid, and I liked that you can customize the spice level. Service was impeccable. Whether it was because it was a quieter time or just great hospitality, our server was attentive without being overbearing and made sure we had everything we needed. This is definitely a must-try at least once--but for me, it's already become a go-to spot.
