Eh. I've been in here about 10 times and the service varies considerably. At times I've been treated well and people have helped me choose a wine for the occasion, explaining the difference between wines. However, on about 50% of my visits I have been either ignored completely, treated rather rudely, or some combination. This doesn't seem to be based on how busy the store is- I've really only ever had one or two other customers in there at the same time I was in. I have no idea why, unless it is the difference in my apparel (work vs. casual). I left the other day knowing I won't be back. I can get good wine elsewhere without leaving feeling badly about the interaction. Too bad. read more

A year after my review, I was contacted by the owner of the shop. He wanted to apologize for giving me the Drumheller Chardonnay bottles with messed up labels. He offered me a bottle of the same wine as an apology. So I went and picked it up. I also met the owner Mr. Rande Jenus and he was very apologetic for what happened. Although I had almost forgotten about it, I was happy that Wine Cabinet whose first impressions on the phone, of the wine tasting lady, were very good, gave me another good one by showing a nice gesture. A cool little wine store right next to Reston Town Center. The staff are friendly and helpful. Last Saturday 10 of us were going to go to a winery. We decided on a private wine tasting instead with Steve Mesteiro from the Wine Cabinet . Boy did we make the right decision! Talked with Steve about what kind of wine we wanted and he was right on! He brought with him a fabulous selection of wines from around the world! It was so informative, he even brought a map of each country and region of the wines we were tasting! He brought all the glasses and wine! It was so wonderful to not have to drive home from a winery after all the tasting The tasting can go as long as you want, we did 3 hours! Until today I had no idea this place existed, but boy am I glad I found it! They have quite an extensive selection of reds, whites, bubbles and rosés at various price points. Although I do agree that some bottles seem to be a little overpriced, at least compared to the small wine store I typically frequent. That said, I do like that their sections are clearly marked by intensity and the store provides notes about flavor and staff favorites. On my first trip, I was able to find 3 mid-priced wines that I look forward to enjoying later on. Shame on me for checking in after the fact though, it looks like I missed out on a very generous 20% off coupon for your first visit. Oh well! They also offer a variety of artisan chocolates, some wine related bric-a-brac, and have a section of craft beers I will have to peruse better next time I stop in. read more

I actually quite like this wine shop. Their selection is excellent. I was not actively greeted when I walked in, but that doesn't offend me at any store. I've worked retail before and I know even if there aren't customers in the store, it doesn't mean you can't be busy. I went to this store for a specific wine, and started at the front and worked my way down the sides looking for it. I could not find the bottle and approached the man at the counter who was happy to show me where it was (tucked back a little like the first three bottles had recently been purchased), then he also showed me a few other comparable wines. I've read some of the other reviews and I think it's strange that people want to bash a business for the employees not hovering. Personally, I'm pretty self sufficient when it comes to both shopping and wine and I prefer to browse WITHOUT someone hovering behind me, which was the experience I had here. If you need something and approach a staff member they seem very receptive, knowledgable and quick to respond, and that to me is service. read more

This is the second year in a row I've had an amazing Christmastime experience heavily influenced by The Wine Caninet, and in particular Steve M., whose passion for wine is infectious and inspiring. Last year, Steve helped our family organize an awesome tasting of strictly Pinot Noirs, but from all of the major regions of the world - the idea being to focus on a single wine and figure out for ourselves which particular region of the world produced our favorite. The exercise was super helpful for identifying my personal go-to Pinot Noir when dissecting overwhelming wine menus. This year, we did something similar, but focused on a wide range of red blends with grapes from all over the world. The kicker was that Steve came to OUR HOUSE and conducted the wine tasting. Steve layered world history, geography, and a deep knowledge of everything wine -- from the grapes, to types of glasses, to crafting methods, dispelling wive's tales, and personal stories from his own eclectic past -- to provide an experience that was both informative and very entertaining. I was drawn here by the amusing mail flyers for 5% discounts. "Coupon and high-five must be presented at time of purchase." Extensive collection of wines, and I agree that the bottle alignments are consistent, and organized well. I was prepared to be lost and describe what I was looking for, but even then the staff is practical, friendly, and willing to help. Wine tastings twice a week, and the beerman is cheerful with his suggestions when he's in. Some light holiday snack sales by the register. Dessert/ice wines in the back. Would've browsed more had I more time. Found the perfect ice wine for a wedding gift, and snagged another riesling for myself. This place will be my fix now that I have no BevMo, since the ABC Liquor 5 doors down will cover whatever this and grocery stores (Giant in the same plaza as well) don't have. read more

I had a very negative experience at this store. We went in about 15 minutes before they closed, not intending to spend more than a few minutes inside. There was only one other customer, and the lady working at the store wasn't helping either of us, and she didn't acknowledge our presence when we came in. I would think that a wine store would be a place where employees would be actively helping customers and explaining things, but it wasn't the case here. After about three minutes of looking around, the woman working at the store finally acknowledged us, but only to tell us that she wanted us to leave so she could close the store. We were planning to buy something, but instead left and vowed never to return. In the store's defense, it's possible that they have other employees who aren't completely rude and anti-customer, but I won't be back to find out. read more

I'm currently training myself to be as much of a wine expert as I can possibly be (knowing it will come in handy later in life even more so than right now), and The Wine Cabinet is doing everything they can to help me achieve my goal. The exact opposite of the pretentious, stuffy, intimidating wine & cheese shops you may have come across in the past, this place is all about friendly, warm customer service and fair prices for a wide variety of wines, beers, and accompanying foods. Definitely don't sleep on these guys when it comes to the cheese selection: if you're hosting a party in the near future, keep the Cabinet in your mind, they'll be able to provide you with the perfect cheeses for an appetizer course. As for the wines, just know this: if you're looking for something in particular that's outside the realm of ultra-premium and/or rare, you'll find it here. Red and white, all the bases are covered. I went in earlier this week, looking for a good chianti for dinner later that night, and walked out with one of the best I've ever tried, all thanks to their great help. The beer selection is far smaller, but what they do offer is all quality. You won't be finding any Bud Light or Corona here- this is the place to come when you want a microbrewery-produced specialty brew. This used to be my favorite wine shop in the area. They were very receptive when I went in the first time looking for some Columbia Crest Two Vine Shiraz (or anything really - the Columbia Crest Two Vine series is some of the best wine on the planet. Trust me). Anyway, the last couple of times I've been in have not been as pleasant. I asked about a wine with which I was unfamiliar (Qupe Syrah) and the guy treated me like an idiot not worth his time. Clearly I did not realize that there are many types of Qupe Syrah - I thought Qupe was the producer. Anyway, after I did a quick internet search on my phone and found what I was looking for, I asked another guy about it. He was kinder, said he would order some, took my number and said he would call when it was in. He never called. That was at least 8 months ago. The last time I was there I took some out of town state friends who wanted to get a Virginia wine as a gift for their housesitter. The guy with whom we spoke made it abundantly clear that buying Virginia wine is a waste of money. He was snooty, rude and very unprofessional. Eventually, however, he did recommend a reasonably priced bottle that my friend purchased. (By the way, I have had a lot of Virginia wine since I moved out here. Some of it is quite good. You will never have the selection you have in Sonoma Valley, but that does not mean that none of it is worth while.) Then we moved to the beer section and my friend was laughing about the name of Arrogant Bastard ale. We were done talking with the guy at the store and he was not standing with us. Yet he jumped into that conversation grabbing a bottle of wine called "Bitch" and showing it off. He told some pointless story about some guy who bought the "Bitch" wine for his wife because she was actually a bitch. He seemed to think he was pretty funny. I did not. My friend was actually a bit offended. To be honest, I think they judge on appearance. I will be the first to admit that I do not look like your text book wine snob. I am super casual in both dress and attitude, but I make a decent living and I buy and drink a lot of wine. Anyway, I'm now looking for a new local wine spot. I'm happy to go to Total Wine and Wegman's - both of which have great selections, but neither of which is super close - but I'd rather patronize the local, family-owned stores. read more

Hands down the best wine store in northern Virginia I've been to. The level of service here is great (the one-star reviewer may have visited on an off day). Dave the beer manager knows his beers and gets huge kudos for obtaining cans of Lost Rhino the week that Ashburn brewery released their brew in cans. They get an automatic four stars for having as good a craft selection as Total Wine (and constantly rotating), without the stress of having to drive to Sterling and deal with a superstore. They get an additional star for their customer service. Visit between 1 and 5 PM on Saturdays for complimentary beer AND wine tastings. I always leave here with at least 2 six packs, or two bottles (if I'm in a wine buying mood). read more

This is a fairly new wine shop that is definitely more Napa Valley than Loudoun County. The display racks are a nice polished dark wood and the bottles always are aligned properly to keep you from picking one up for a spin to see what it is. No carts or boxes in the aisles just nice floors. The selection is excellent and the arrangement quite logical so you can easily find what you came for. They are big on Wine Spectator reviews. I think there was a stack of neatly arranged suggested shopping lists on the counter complete with dainty little check boxes to keep track of your progress on the Top 100 wines list. I passed, as all I had on me to take advantage of it was a recently borrowed Marriott pen and the tip might not have been fine enough to make a sharp looking check mark. In retrospect perhaps that was not really the issue. They go all out for wine tastings setting up tables in the middle of the store on occasion and jointly host wine dinners with L'Auberge Chez Francois and Fleming's Steakhouse. The staff is helpful but the prices are a bit high. read more

Yes, they are slightly more expensive than Total Wine but I choose this place every time. Family owned and great folks to talk to every time. Tastings every weekend and their staff are more than happy to give advice on what to dry, no matter the tier of wine. No snootiness! Also, Dave gives some great beer tastings of some awesome rare beers. A must try when you're already there for a wine tasting. This is the only place we buy our wine. Still top notch! I live in Arlington and don't like travelling to Reston because my body can't take the time change but I like stopping in because the crew there are still the best! Dave (whom they call "the beer guy") has increased and improved the beer selection and offers different labels as they come available and sends out updates and reviews on them. The chicks dig him and after seeing how he treats them like all other customers (i.e. some beverage stores seem to treat women like they are morons) I understand why. Gave a description of what I liked, and was handed two wines (only one was for me unfortunately, the other a gift). The wine was delicious and not costly! This boutique wine shop has been a hallmark of Reston for many years. I don't remember how I discovered it but I love my visits to pick out favorite wines and discover new ones. The owners are usually at the store, and you can tell theirs and the team's commitment to true customer satisfaction. From guiding my selection based on my taste, budget, and occasion; to assisting to resolve any questions or concerns. I'm especially impressed that they will make themselves available for "wine emergencies" even during holidays when the store is closed. Charming little place tucked into the North Point Shopping Center close to Glory Days, the Wine Cabinet is stocked with a respectable variety of international wine and organized like a progressive wine menu--by color and body, lean to lush. I love small businesses with character, especially if there are "characters" working there (check and check-- this place hits a homer for both categories!!) these guys don't just SELL wine-- they LIVE wine. All are passionate enthusiasts and their love of winemaking and brewing is contagious! I fell in love with wine on high school trips to Italy and France and repeat trips to almost anywhere. From then on, I've endeavored to further my education by the glass and found like minds to share the experience. I can't say that I have one favorite, as my tastes tend to favor what pairs nicely with what I'm eating and magnifies or offsets the flavors and textures contained therein. So when I find a place like this staffed with knowledgeable and kindred perpetually epicurious folks like me I get excited. This weekend at a tasting, I found a lovely single vineyard Pinot noir from the Edna Valley (between Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo), planted East to West with raspberry-bing cherry nose and that whisper of Paso jamminess (if you've spent any time in Paso Robles, you know what I mean) that made my mouth excited and my wallet happy for less than $20 with the Yelp coupon! I can't wait to return to this little gem and taste every week to discover new finds from the old favorites and new arrivals featured in the lineup. I can always pick a $50+ bottle that impresses, but the joy of finding a $15-20 bottle that delights the palate just as much delivers the thrill of the hunt! I royally embarrass my mother when I can't resist pointing out to our guests what great finds we've served them and where I discovered them-- it may be gauche to speak of bargains when you're hosting, but I truly love to share great wine finds with friends and family. After all, if more Americans develop an international well-honed wine palate, savvy capitalists will seize the opportunity to cater to the new aggregate market= better wine, more competitively priced for US oenophiles!! In addition To the open bottle and Saturday tastings, WC now has: 1- a more intense 1 - 1 1/2 hour classes on wine categories with nosh included 2- amazing wine pairing dinners at Passion Fish!! The Wine Cabinet is (was?) one of our favorite places to shop. Typically friendly staff help navigate through the myriad of excellent selections. We've been shopping there for years. We are in our 60's, and called ahead for curbside pickup. The man who came out to the car was not wearing a mask nor gloves. That's fine - we asked him to place the box in the back seat of the car. Wow! We got massive eye-rolling and body language that suggested extreme annoyance. Was my husband to expose himself to a mask/gloveless stranger? My impression that curbside delivery meant just that. We both were so taken aback that we will carefully decide whether or not we want to tolerate this kind of rudeness. It would be too bad to not shop there, but we both left the curb rattled. I still am astonished at the abject lack of professionalism. read more

Great wine store! Go here for the best wines that Oregon and California have to offer that you won't find at the other wine box stores in the area. They have some of the more obscure, but great, wines from the west coast. The people are friendly, down to earth and ready to help. I will never walk into the store called the Wine Cabinet in Reston, VA ever again after being profiled. I used to buy this particular wine called Smith & Hook at this store and the gentleman acted as if I cannot afford it by pointing to a $65 bottle of wine. (Tried to intimidate me lol) He also told me that they never carried the wine there. That's not true! I've bought half a case before and gave some bottles to my friends in Northern VA and they loved it. Now mind you that the price of the wine I wanted was $20 and I looked at the man as if he lost his mind. We went back and forth but then I came to the conclusion that I shouldn't continue spending my money there by clearly seeing that I wasn't wanted by that man's actions. I come here quiet often as I live right up the street. The staff is always super accommodating and will be more than willing to address any questions or concerns you might have. The beer and wine tastings on Fridays are a delight and it's always something new and exciting. We entered the store, and despite it not being terribly busy, my husband and I were completely ignored. A couple that entered after us got a greeting, but none for us. The store was hosting a small tasting, and we were never invited to try the wines. We wandered for a few minutes, and were never assisted by any members of the staff. We selected a few bottles on our own, paid for them (strange, our money was worth their time) and left. They sell very yummy french macarones here (from a bakery in DC). Be careful, once you've tried them you might be back all the time to see if they got more. They are very pricy and you have to buy the whole box with whatever flavors they have in it (usually a nice assortment). Go all the way to the back of the shop and look for these in the fridge!
