Happened 2 weeks ago. Wrote email to customercare@totalwine.com that is explaining the matter but did not get response back in 2 weeks, so i am writing here now. We experienced older lady was so rude. ID CHECK acceptable 24 hour ban- I DID NOT understand So, my boyfriend and I were at the Fairfax Total Wine location, trying to buy a bottle of wine. He was the one paying, and he showed his ID. The cashier asked mine, but mine was in the car. The cashier said they need to check everyone's ID. We completely understood.When a group of people purchase, they have to present their ID. It is the store policy that applies to all states. Truly UNDERSTANDABLE. We said we'll go grab my ID from the car, and we'll be back in 2 minutes." The store was not even busy at the time; there were only two of us, and maybe there were two more people, including her. But then the lady at the counter said something that totally threw me off - she goes, "No, NOW I CAN'T SELL IT to you for 24 HOURS." She explained it was some POLICY that if anyone doesn't have their ID, EVEN IF WE GO AND GET IT, they won't sell us alcohol for a whole day. I said okay, I'll wait outside so he can get in and collect them again." But she refused to sell it to my partner and we felt like we'd been blacklisted from the store for the entire day. We asked to see the policy but no response. WHY make us wait 24 hours for something that could've been fixed in five minutes? The entire thing felt completely unnecessary. I was just standing there, totally shocked. I've never heard of any rule like that in any store! It's not like we were trying to SNEAK AROUND WITHOUT SHOWING ID. I know there are laws around alcohol sales, and stores have to be strict, but is this 24-hour thing really a Total Wine policy? Or was she just making it up because she didn't want to deal with us? I've never run into something like this before. PS: We did not argue with the group ID check policy, but 24 hour store ban. read more

We shop here frequently and love the selection of wines & beers. You can find varietals from all over the world and they have a great selection of accessories too, including seasonal items. I went here to get some Rosé wine for our beach trip; a case to be exact and FYI you get 10% off if you purchase a case! I knew exactly what I wanted but immediately after I entered he store, I was greeted by a lovely gentleman with a delightful British accent. He was so charming, pleasant, and attentive. Getting in and out of here is always an adventure. There are too many stores, in this small strip mall. The high traffic and non drivers can be frustrating. Actually frightening. On a plus note I'm glad this store exists. They have a very good beer selection. Plus I like an occasional Virginia wine. The fancy Bordeaux types will find a lot. Nice employees. Also I'm thankful for their expertise. They definitely know which ones to pick. Prices aren't as competitive as they used to be. Yet if you're looking for a more challenging beer to find, this could work out quite well. One stop shopping is always best. read more

I bought a 12 pack of beer at the store on LRT and Pickett in Fairfax. When I got home, I realized that one of the bottles was broken. So I went back to the store and reported a problem. After a bit, the supervisor came out with a full box of 12 and asked me what I wanted to do. Take one and leave or pay for the other 11? I noted that this was the third broken bottle from his store in about 1 year. He looked at the box with the broken bottle and said that there was only 1 bottle in the box. I repeated that this was the third instance in about a year or two. Apparently this was too much of a bother for this fellow so I walked out. He called out, but I kept ongoing. Customer service? First time in Total Wine in years recently. This location seems trimmed down from what I remember but that could be me. I went in and was helped by Dominic who was very helpful and polite. He checked on things when I had a question and introduced me to some terrific wines. He must have spent 30 mins with me. I ended up getting quite a few nice bottles which Dominic carried to the counter. At the checkout there was some confusion as I was using 4 different coupons. When Dominic tried to explain to the "manager" (Conner) which bottles I wanted the discount on, Conner rudely told Dominic to "just return to the floor". I was shocked that he, as a manager, would address an employee (who was assisting a customer) like that in front of a customer. It was very unprofessional. I think Conner needs some more management training and Dominic deserves an apology. read more

This was my first time coming to any Total Wine and More. And I am in love! The store has a variety of beers and wine. I was more about the beer since I could get local brews as well as imports. I learned I can special order without purchasing a set amount. I also like the fact I could buy single beer bottles so that way I don't waste my money buying a 6-12 pk of beer that ended up tasting gross. Yeah I am talking about your Banana Bread beer! He always greats me with a cheerful hello and offer of assistance with wine suggestions. He has never steered me wrong. Stopped in to get our bearings for purchasing wine for our upcoming wedding and walked in on Friday when they were doing a wine tasting! Dominic was great; knowledgable, funny, and just so darn charming. He gave us a tasting of 5 wines, two whites and three reds and even though we weren't planing on it, ended up purchasing a red blend we tasted. He then took us around and gave us a lay of the land and even highlighted some suggestions and best sellers. We went over to the beer section and another associate told us they can chill the beers ahead of time if we wanted (and suggested we call the night before we pick up). The staff were friendly and store layout was easy to navigate amongst the cigar, wines, and beers. You can even return un-opened wines as well. So helpful to know. The store is not as large as others but good luck walking into this store and leaving empty-handed. There's something for everyone here. You can even get some good cigars and winery eats. This location offers wine/beer tastings and every staff member is knowledgeable about what you're looking for. I love their regional sections as I've found wines from Spain and Germany that I can't find elsewhere. As for beer, they carry craft brews local and all over the US of A. I've been a long-time fan of Total Wine and happened to stumble upon their Fairfax location on VA-236 (Little River Turnpike off the Beltway). Sorry, McLean, but this location's won me over! The McLean location, while being cavernous and having a huge selection, tends to be a bit of a zoo sometimes, so I really appreciated being in a slightly smaller store with a better-curated collection of wines (and not having to constantly avoid shopping card collisions). More importantly, the customer service as this location is excellent - especially from my new friend Dominic, a delightful gentleman who helped me find what I was looking for and who turned me onto some new versions of old favorites, including a Spier chenin blanc from his homeland of South Africa, a crisp and lightly fruity wine that's perfect for summertime. We had a great chat, and he's an incredible font of information regarding anything and everything about wine, so make sure to make his acquaintance when you're at the shop stocking up! read more

My entire family loves this place so much! They have any kind of alcoholic drink you can imagine [except hard liquor of course] they even have non alcoholic beer for the little ones. It's like if Sam's Club ran a liquor store (well... that sold beer and wine, not liquor, per se). The prices are surprisingly acceptable, and the selection in beer AND wine is varied. They carried a beer I'd been looking for for a while (Samurai Rice Ale, actually), so I'm a fan. Great selection! I'm a regular at Total Wine, but often head to Chantilly because it's a bit bigger than (this) Fairfax location. Actually headed over to the Fairfax location after going to the Chantilly location yesterday and not loving the selection nearly as much. As with any Total Wine, the associates are friendly and I don't think I've ever been to any Total Wine location where I haven't been approached by an associate asking if I needed assistance. Note: They offer great coupons, but can be weird about them (using more than one for one big order) - my husband and I will often "shop separately" so we can take advantage of several coupons that we've collected. This location is actually smaller than Chantilly, but I think I'll be coming here a lot more often! read more

Total wine is like a big toy store for adults. Since covid started, you can now do all of your shopping online, both wine and beer, and they will bring it right to your car and place it in the trunk. All you have to do is click on the link in the email and tell them which one of the designated curbside pickup spaces you parked in. If you sign up on their website for an account, you can accumulate points which will provide discounts off future purchases, in addition to the standard 10-15% off coupons they have. These 10-15% off coupons are usually only good on winery direct wines which is ok since that includes top wines in all price ranges. If you live in VA, I believe they will even deliver or ship the wine to you but unfortunately this is not the case if you live in Maryland. I find that the wine tastes better if you stay away from having it shipped anyway. Although it is nice to support local wine/beer stores instead of the larger chains, total wine has both a great selection and customer service. read more

Staff was perfectly friendly and accommodating here, but I gotta say, the parking situation makes this particular Total Wine location less than ideal. The Total Wine is located on the far side of this shopping area, where the parking lot exit (and traffic light) is located. There was a huge line of car constantly trying to get out at the light, which made both parking and walking across the parking lot extremely challenging. It's probably not always like this -- particularly on weekdays, perhaps -- but coming on a rainy Saturday did not lead to the smoothest overall experience. I think it'd be more worth it to drive to the one located at the Greenbriar Town Center closer to Chantilly (which is also a bigger, more flagship-style store with a larger selection of both wines and beers). But if you're in the area, you're probably in good shape to find what you're looking for at this Total Wine. read more

Friendly checkout staff bagged my purchases in a practical manner, but the lady from the shelving crew was really a space cadet. Asked if I should look in another aisle for a certain beer, and she indicated that the one we were standing in was it. Happened to route through another aisle and there it was after all... then she came around the corner of the aisle I needed with a straight face 5 minutes after. Disclaimer: This is strictly based on the beer side of the store. I didn't even walk down a wine aisles. Four stars for the beer selection and variety butttttt ... navigating the store is a bit of a challenge. We were in from out of town and stopped in with hopes of grabbing a few 6-packs of locally brewed beer. They seem to organize the beer like you'd organize wine and it just doesn't work. There was a table setup on the beer side of the store and a woman offering tastings. I approached the woman for suggestions on local beer, she advised she was just working the tasting and directed me to customer service. I asked what appeared to be the manager at customer service and he suggested I ask another employee. The employee offered a suggestion and walked me to the aisle only to find the shelf empty. The ONE local beer he could suggest was out of stock. I'm sure the place is great if you know exactly what you want but it was slightly disappointing for us. We left with some new beers to try but nothing local. read more

Based on previous Yelp reviews, It seems like customer service at this Total WIne is hit or miss, and unfortunately, the most recent time I went was a miss. We came in not for their wine selection, but for their beers. They seem to carry to more unique craft beers than other places and we were looking for a particular kind. It took us a while to find it and we must have had a look of confusion while looking, but no one stopped to ask to see if we needed help. It would not have been so bad had we not been in the same aisle as 2 staff members who were just chatting it up. Not impressed Total WIne. When ordering a keg, Total Wine makes the process pretty seamless. They have craft beer 1/2 kegs as well so if you want something better than your typical Bud Light or Miller they have Lagunitas Sumpin' Sumpin', Dogfish, and other IPAs available depending on the week and availability. Just call in, let them know what you want, pick if up the day you need it, and return the keg (and tap if you rented one) the next day! Easy! No, this place isn't American Eagle Outfitters (remember high school?) where the associates will literally follow you around asking if you need anything every 5 seconds from the second you walk through the door, but if you seek help they are usually pretty friendly and resourceful. I love the Total Wine chains! Their staff is always knowledgable, friendly and eager to help. After doing the fun tasting event at the Chantilly location, I took snapshots of all my fav proseccos and wines. I simply opened up my photos and showed them to the friendly sales associates who quickly walked us over to their locations. For an occasional wine drinker who is curious to know more about the different varieties and brands out there, this store is a great resource. I would prefer to buy from this place if I were scoping out wines that I have never tried before rather than winging it at a local grocery or Whole Foods. I love how they have paragraph-long descriptions for 80% of the wines that are displayed in the store. There is also a wine score for some based on the Wine Spectator magazine. Lastly, there are staff favorites In addition to wines, they carry a good selection of beer. This store also sells wine glasses of all types and other accessories such as bottle openers. I'm a West Coast girl stuck in an East Coast world. With that said I have been looking for a stand in for my local BevMo (which doesn't exist out here sadly). I decided to check out Total Wine to look for some holiday gifts. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. While it wasn't as large as I would have hoped, the selection was relatively extensive. I was looking for a very particular wine (again, being from Napa/Sonoma area I am picky) and the employee helped me right away to find it. Prices are reasonable. Selection is good. Staff is friendly. This place is great if you're looking for unique wines or beers. They have a whole section of beers from around the world that you can buy individually complete with descriptions of each one. It's awesome! I went here once looking for Sake (where else does one buy Sake?), and I wasn't disappointed. They had a section on a few shelves dedicated to Sake. On another occasion, I was with a friend looking for a specific wine that we didn't know the name of. We looked lost and the sales associate asked if we needed help. We told him that we're looking for a wine from New York with a cat on the label. Somehow he knew exactly what we were talking about, and led us to the section that it was in. My only reason for 4 stars is that the cashier is never friendly with me.
