I flew Virgin Atlantic from Detroit to London on March 23, 2017. Their baggage handling system tore the entire wheel assembly completely off my spinner suitcase. At Heathrow Airport, I made a claim with a Virgin Atlantic employee immediately. He offered me a cheap new suitcase (not a spinner). He said if I didn't want the cheap suitcase, I could call a phone number when I returned home to make a claim. He handed me a red brochure on which he wrote my PIR number (claim number) and circled the phone number I should call. He neglected to point out in the brochure the section that says I had only 7 days to fill out an online form (which I had no ability to print out on my trip) and mail it to Virgin Atlantic in order to get a refund (it can't be filled out electronically unless it is scanned which I also had no ability to do). After I returned from my 12 day trip, I tried the next day to get compensation from Virgin Atlantic and was told that I had only the seven days to mail in a claim. I had made the claim at the airport with their employee as soon as I retrieved my broken bag!! Virgin Atlantic is sticking to a very rigid interpretation of the Montreal Convention (the international rules that govern airlines) which they don't have to do; they have the discretion to be customer friendly and do the right thing for their customers. If you choose to fly with them and they damage your bag, accept their cheap suitcase substitute because it is probably the only satisfaction you will get from them. Also, the seats on Virgin Atlantic are incredibly uncomfortable. My entire family hated them. Our return flight on Delta was infinitely better. My advice: DO NOT FLY VIRGIN ATLANTIC! read more
