This is one of my favorite spots in Blacksburg. The workers here are so nice and helpful, and always help me find what I need. They have free tastings on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, which are great for people learning about wine and beer. The owner is also incredibly knowledgeable, and I always enjoy talking beer and wine with him. The layout of the store is also great, with all the regions together and labeled. The selection is also one of the best I have ever seen, and I don't think I will ever run out of beers to try. read more

This place is BALLER!! What an amazingly curated selection of wines - better than places I've been on the east coast. If I lived in Blacksburg, I'd do all of my wine shopping here. The staff was amazingly knowledgable and friendly. I could not believe some of the gems I found in this store that are hard to get and even rarer to find out here on the coast. Plus, we wandered in during one of their free tastings. Everything on the tasting menu was delicious and well thought out/themed. We left with a case to drink over the course of our two-week visit with my parents, and I went back my last day for another case of stuff I know is impossible to find back home. If you have any real interest in craft wine and beer, you simply must check this out. Plus, if you're wanting to make a day of it, you can do the samples here, and then walk next door to Kroger for another round of free wine samples! Awesome bottle shop that has become a weekly tradition. I love that the beer supply is divided up by region, and the rotating seasonal/new arrivals selection always has some interesting beers. The service is always friendly and the mystery packs are a fun change of pace. From my point of view this is the best place to buy beer in SW Virginia. I was traveling through this area with my dad and made a special trip out of our way to stop and pick up some brews that we can't get back in the ATL. We picked up a bunch of Dogfish 120 IPA, some nice high ABV bombers, and a few random singles that had interesting labels. The guys working at this shop were awesome. They know their stuff. On the day we were visiting they were holding a tasting of several types of beer and wine. This is kind of odd since its not something commonly done at home but it was very enjoyable. read more

Being stuck in college in middle of nowhere WV, I really find this place a gem when it comes to wine and beer selection. I love wine and the Lover is a beer connoisseur so this is a place that we both appreciate dearly. Vintage Cellar really is about as good as it gets. The beer selection is phenomenal, from locally-brewed to internationally-renowned. If they don't have it, they'll get it. One of the top 100 wine stores in the country, and a nice to have right here in our backyard. read more

There are lots of things to like AND dislike about Vintage Cellar. Pros: -Best beer and wine selection in Blacksburg, by a mile. -Knowledgeable staff, who are mostly friendly. -Free beer and wine tastings on weekends. Cons: -Surprisingly expensive, even for a specialty wine/beer shop. -Slow service at times. -LOTS of beer being sold WAY past its "best by" date. And don't expect friendly service when you point this out to the staff. I usually wait till I'm in a city with a Total Wine, and stock up then. But if you're in a pinch (i.e. "I need to have Lagunitas Little Sumpin' Wild Ale RIGHT NOW!"), Vintage Cellar is fine. Just make sure to check those dates on the bottles. read more

Best beer selection in town. Best wine selection in town. They have some bargains for wines but the beers are a little more pricey than normal. But like they guy that complained about Five Guys burgers having grease, what do you expect if you want the best beer? The staff is über knowledgeable and friendly. They have free wine and beer tastings every week too. And bread from a great bakery in Roanoke delivered fresh every Friday. And good cheese and a few craft soft drinks. A beer of the month club is available as well as a wine of the month club. Both offer discounts on their regular priced items for giving them some regular monthly income. Sure, you can go next door to Kroger and get a few of the same beers for cheaper but that's not what Eat Local is about. Support your local food places. You get better service too. So, yeah, their prices are up - for the beer - over mega chains but that's a bit like saying you can get cheaper burgers at McDonalds. A, you don't want to support McD's when you can support Mike's Grill. B, you want to try more and different burgers you can't get there. Ermm, uh, beer. Oh, dear. I've gone and confused myself. I was a big fan of this place while I was studying in Blacksburg. Its not a huge store but definitely decent sized. They have huge selection of variety of wine with something surprising for every pocket. If you like particular wine, ask the staff and they will assist you in showing the variety. The staff is really friendly and eager to help. Some times they have sale on really expensive wines and that is the good time to stock up. Most of the wines I bought from there were good. I never bought beer from there so cannot comment on that front but for wine I can say without hesitation that they are best in the area. They also have tasting which is great way to taste new wine without purchasing the whole bottle. read more

Vintage Cellar by far has the best wine and beer selection in Blacksburg. Their prices are fair and they offer free wine tastings weekly. When I was a student, Vintage Cellar hosted free wine tastings several times each week for students in John Boyer's Geography of Wine class. It was so nice of the staff to take the time to talk to students about the flavor profiles/wine regions/pairings for each of their wines! Each week they would also pick their favorite bottles under $8-9 to recommend to students which was great when wanting to expand my knowledge of wine on a budget. My only (small) problem with Vintage Cellar, is when they got very busy with students during their wine tastings, some of the staff wasn't the friendliest. Overall, I recommend Vintage Cellar if you're looking for a wide variety of wine and beer in the Blacksburg area! read more

This place is indeed incredible because it has such an amazing selection of beers (and wines too I guess but I'm a beer aficionado). I've walked by as they do tastings, but haven't taken part in any myself. However, in spite of their status as a distributor the beers aren't necessarily cheap. I tend to go and get a bottle or two to try something new, each running around 2-3 bucks. It isn't bad, but you're looking at a college town here, 8-12 bucks for a 6 pack is getting in the pricy range for me. I like how they added beeradvocate ratings to some of their beers, but I would prefer they did more special discounts when possible. Either way, you won't find a better beer store. read more

This is a ridiculously good wine and beer specialty store to find in the mountains of Southwest Virginia. They have a huge selection of craft brews from all over the country and even the world. The wine selection is even larger, and some years ago they were rated one of the top 100 wine stores in the country by GQ magazine. The staff is super friendly and helpful, and they have offerings for the whole price spectrum. When I was a grad student at Virginia Tech, I would frequently go down on Friday for the free beer tasting, or Saturday for the free wine tastings, and I almost never left the store empty handed. I live in San Francisco now, and although there are great wine (K&L, etc) and decent beer (City Beer, etc) stores, there's nothing I've found yet with the 1-2 punch of this place. read more

The price ranges are good for someone looking for a cheap bottle of wine (e.g. Lost Valley for under $5), to some that are in the $40-50 range. The beer tends to be more expensive, but they're not the cheap brews you want to get you drunk in a hurry. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Any time I'm looking for a wine for a specific meal in a certain price range, they been able to suggest selections that have yet to disappoint. Friday beer tasting! Saturday wine tasting!! I love the smell when I first walk into this place. It is a feast for the senses, including taste as they have weekly beer and wine tastings. Their price ranges from very cheap to very expensive, depending on what you're looking for. Staff are very knowledgeable. Don't expect to walk in this place and be waited on hand and foot. They expect you to come in and "mosey" and stalk THEM to ask questions. Sometimes, they sell beer past their "best by" date. I've never been able tot ell a difference, but upon pointing it out the staff invited me to just not purchase it, then. Good news is they never pressure you to buy anything. If you come in waving 100s around you are treated the same as someone looking to spend 5 dollars or less. I like that about any place of business, all customers valued equally. read more

We are extremely lucky to have a place like Vintage Cellar in town. The occasional premium (usually no more than a couple of percent) in price is easily outweighed by the service and attention you get versus other wine stores in town (including Kroger, next door). You're buying wine; enjoy the full experience and use this store to catapult you into new tastes. The staff is extremely good with suggestions and pairing foods with wines. I love picking out a meal to cook in Kroger and then heading straight to the Vintage Cellar and letting them pick out a matching bottle. Sometimes I'll reverse this process; either way, well worth the couple of steps down the sidewalk. read more

Prices are inflated, even compared to product that is available next door at Kroger. This place was more useful twenty years ago before the supermarket boom, and with the recent craft beer craze, every wal mart and kroger within 100 miles carries IPA's. While Vintage Cellar does have some of the most rare of the rare, if you're just looking for common brews I would say you'd be better off going to a supermarket. read more

After trying Dog Fish Head Midas Touch downtown one day, I went all over town trying to buy some for myself. I had no luck until someone suggested the Vintage Cellar and voila! Not only did they have Midas Touch but just about any other bottled beer you could want. You're not just restricted to buying 4, 6, or 12 packs of a single beer either. You can mix and match to customize your own pack. Throw in the excellent wine collection and the complimentary weekend tastings and the Vintage Cellar earns a perfect 5 stars! read more

This place really sets a high bar for specialty beer and wine shops. HUGE selection of craft beers. More than any other place I've ever seen like this. We would go more often if we were closer. It's an hour's drive for us - one way - and we have since found a smaller but competitive stop in Floyd. Even with the distance, though, "going to Blacksburg" comes up every now and again around our house and it's understood that that means a trip to Vintage Cellar. read more

These guys were AWESOME with all the booze planning that goes with throwing your own wedding - from all the changes from this keg - no that keg - no this keg, no - that keg, to constant questions about wine and sparkling wine, this place took customer service to the next step. We used to live in that town about 6 years ago and got a particular kind of Portuguese wine - we couldn't find it and they looked it up and found out not only that they didn't carry it, but why they didn't. We asked a wine specialist to put together red and white wines in the $10-$15 range for my daughter's wedding. We were very disappointed in two of the wines recommended. No one drank them. After the wedding we opened fresh bottles and confirmed that they were awful before throwing out the two cases. We were from out of town and couldn't taste the wines beforehand. read more
