What a great way to have lunch at the airport! With a warm and inviting atmosphere and a friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff, I forgot that we were in the airport awaiting our flight home. Decent wine selection with some nice flight options. The food was great! The brie, prosciutto and fig jam sandwich was heavenly. The pork tacos were fun and delicious and the chicken sandwich was so so tasty. It's great to see that you no longer have to grab a burger in the airport. Looks like there is a location in JFK as well, so I'll have to check it out. read more

As far as airport food, five stars all the way. Vino Volo is my go to food/ wine stop if I'm ever at the airport. While the food menu is small, everything I've ever had was delicious. My go-to is the Tuscan Chicken Sandwich and a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. The place itself has a nice ambiance and serves as a quiet getaway from airport noise, at least for a little while. The wine flights are delightful and pretty reasonably priced in my opinion. As an extra bonus, the staff at the Detroit Vino Volo were extra friendly and seemed to know most of the customers, almost like your neighborhood bar. read more

Definitely the best food and drink option in Terminal A...it's located across from Gate A46. Prices are reasonable for food and wine...especially when considering its at the airport. Everything is tasty...the food options range from lamb meatballs to smoked salmon rolls to chicken sandwiches and more. Good music too. Definitely check it out! DETROIT AIRPORT: I love Vino Volo: nice ambience, comfortable seating, tables and nice servers, and the food is great. It's my little airport oasis anywhere I go where they have a lease. The charcuterie board is good, the soups are good, the fish is good (salmon bruschetta) and the macaroni and cheese is awesome. Portions are a little small so bring your wallet. I'm a frequent traveler and a sucker for great airport restaurants. On a recent stop in Detroit, the Yelp reviews sent me to Vino Volo (across from A46) with little hesitation. Vino Volo, while nice, can't compete with my all-time favorite airport dining option: Atlanta's One Flew South. My obsession with OFS required some "getting over" to embrace the Vino Volo experience because they're quite different. At Vino Volo, you'll enjoy an impressive wine list and a severely limited menu. There's no doubting the fact that you're in an airport restaurant. It's tough to miss the signs. Like the waitstaff's name badges, the fact that everyone's tapping on iPads, and the omnipresent rollerboard bags. But, it's definitely a step up from the nearby Chili's Too. The menu is, as I said, limited. I asked about the Roasted Lamb Meatballs and was gruffly told they were out. I opted, instead, for the "signature" Salmon Roll, which was not so much a roll as smoked salmon and crab meat on a cracker. It was really good. And incredibly fast. In fact, I think it arrived in front of me milliseconds before I'd completed my order. While I didn't try them, the wine flights look interesting and would be an opportunity to try something new, which is definitely a worthwhile endeavor while on the road. Isn't that the benefit of travel?! Let's face it, expectations are dulled when eating in an airport so my four stars would be three in the real world. I have always wanted to try this place whenever I travel through Detroit, and I expected it to be better. It fell very short, especially considering the price. Service: Not good at all. It was slow and not attentive (seemed understaffed as the place was almost full.) One of them was much more friendly and prompt (he came once to check on us), the other was just not happy to be there. Grumpy, not interetested, and just not a good server. Not even once he came and checked on us. Not even a thank you when we paid. Food: Overall not good. The "signature" salmon rolls were almost pathetic-5 small crostini topped with mushy crab (although I really couldn't taste much crab or sense crab meat) and a piece of smoked salmon on top for $17? No thanks. If the crab mixture was better, maybe. But it was really so not up to what it's trying to be. Roasted tomato bisque was also not good. It was too sour, and there was not much hint of roasted tomatoes, either. Also it tasted more like tomato soup, not bisque. Not creamy at all. And the crostini that came with the soup were too hard. The sour cream on top didn't go well with the soup, either. Brie and prosciutto sandwich we got for our son looked slightly more promising, but I didn't even want to try at this point. Menu looked promising, but things were just not that great. Wine: My husband ordered a glass of Barolo. It was the only thing that was good. $13 seems ok considering it's at an airport. Atmosphere: ok. Not great. It is a bit crammed for the space. We paid $68 (with the tip), and I have had much better experience at other airport restaurants with the similar amount spent. I had high hopes for this place, seeing as it was practically the only highly rated place at McNamara terminal. The space is very small and cozy. I walked in and the waiter told me to sit where ever I pleased. There are only about 8 tables that seat two, and the rest is bar seating (assuming 8-10 seats). I decided on the 3-piece smoked salmon dish ($11) and the California flight of reds (3 samples totaling a single glass of wine for $14). I watched as the waiter walked around the other 5 tables to ask if everything was okay. He went back and forth between these tables and I thought, he'll eventually make his way around to me. Nope. He hangs out at the bar, talks to his co-worker, then goes back to a table that he brought a check to. I get to the point where I am saying excuse me and trying to flag him down, where he acknowledges me with a single nod of "yes, I see you". He takes care of that table's check and continues to make his round of checks from where he left off. Mind you, the place was only half full and no one was sitting at the bar. The man two seats down asks for a glass of water and gets it right away. I ask for a glass of water plus an order of lamb meatballs (3 meatballs at $15), and 5-10 minutes later a server brings a bag to my table. Turns out my order was put in as to-go, and still no glass of water. I think I get the idea. Although I am in my business casual attire, I know I look a lot younger than most and I personally felt like I was discriminated against for it. I actually tip very generously (especially on corporate meals), but if your focus is on the older crowd then I will just take my generous tip elsewhere. My flight was delayed, so I'm going to find another place to have a drink. EDIT: I just read a review below that said she had the worst service ever here, and I too had the guy with the dreads. It's gotten to the point that I actually go out of my way to have long layovers in the Detroit airport so I can come here. Yes, I realize it is ridiculous to give five stars to a chain. Yes, I am still going to do it. Vino Volo's pleasant interior, with clean, modern lines and comfy chairs, and its friendly service are a balm for the weary traveler. Come here to unwind on your way home, or to celebrate the start of a big vacation. The samplers are definitely the way to go. You get to try 3 unusual wines (no Yellowtail or Robert Mondavi here) and the menu changes often. There are fun themes like rosé and barbecue reds for summer; samplers from a particular region of the world; and even samplers themed around a price point ("value reds" if you want to share a sampler and then pick one glass to order, or "special" wines that you'd never get to try by the bottle or even by the glass, but here you can have a taste for a reasonable price). If you really fall in love, you can buy a bottle to take home. The last couple of times I've gone, I've tried the food and been bowled over by how good it is. Appetizer selections include marinated olives with herbs; Marcona almonds with rosemary; and a cheese plate. The main-dish items can be ordered as a half portion - great for sampling, and for the budget-conscious! Out of those, I've tried the smoked salmon bruschetta; the braised pork tacos with cabbage slaw on corn tortillas; the chickpea & chorizo chili; and the mac & cheese (made with cheddar, gouda, and truffle oil; topped with breadcrumbs). I thought the salmon rolls were a bit blah, but everything else was lip-smacking and mouth-watering. Next time you're at the airport, skip the $7-a-slice pizza or the $12 "salad" with suspicious ingredients, and just come here. With higher-quality food than you get at many restaurants outside airports, and prices that are actually lower than most airport food, why would you NOT come to Vino Volo? read more

Things I'm still trying to get over: 1) The fact that I am writing a review of a business in an airport. 2) The fact that I feel so moved by something in an airport! 3) The fact that this place was in an airport! Like layover, connection miss miss, plane fly fly goodbye AIRPORT! But let me just say, Vino Volo is such an amazingly refreshing change of pace from the usual Junkfood Express style places you end up at while flying, because it tackles some tough questions-- like why NOT enjoy a beautiful glass of wine instead of a nondescript draught beer??? Why not some actually good (but still reasonably priced) food instead of a limp sandwich made and Saran-wrapped last Tuesday??! Really, no reason, except for precedent. F that! One thing I'm still deciding about is their decision to insulate the place from general airport announcements/ status screens. While I appreciate a break from the bustle to breathe and enjoy my vino, I kind of want to make my flight too. Tough decisions -- I guess I just can't have everything! But seriously though, even airport novelty aside, Vino Volo does a good job at being a straight up wine bar. An interesting array of options to choose from, with some cool, local and seasonally rotating features as well. As everyone mentions, the flights of three are a steal at $10-$15, and really possibly THE best way to spend a layover. read more

Okay, don't take the 4 stars to mean that I think this place is a great wine bar. I've only had one glass of wine there as part of a special. The little oxygen bar cum spa place next door had a little deal going on with Vino Volo for the holidays. One $10 glass of wine at Vino Volo and a 15-minute chair massage at the other place for $25. That's the extent of my experience with Vino Volo. So, I can't really comment on much more. So, think of my four stars as a provisional rating. Some of the stuff being sold there, I like. Notably, they have Dibon Demi-Sec Cava, which I love. The menu looks decent as well. Anyway, for me, the best thing about this place is that it exists at DTW, and it doesn't suck. If I had known that it were there, I wouldn't have eaten at the Burger King around the corner. Now, I know better. Another cool thing, I can buy wine there and bring it to my travel destination. We were so skeptical about this place at first, but we relied on Yelp and gave it a try! We started off with the Sweetheart Sparkling Sampler for $11 (most samplers around $11-$15) which consisted of three generous samples of wines with descriptions and prices per bottle for each. The highlight of the three, in my opinion, was the champagne. Since Vino Volo specializes in wines, it only offers very few small tapas-style dishes, so I was bummed about that... so much so that I had to force the boyfriend to eat at another restaurant at the airport thirty minutes later. We ended up ordering the Brie & Prosciutto Sandwich (small, $6), Braised Pork Tacos (regular, $9), Artisan Cured Meats (small, $8), and Penne & Cheese (small, $6). Seems like a lot, but it really wasn't much because the portions were minuscule. The Brie & Prosciutto Sandwich was our favorite, however. The brie and fig spread complemented well with the delicious slices of prosciutto and crunchy bread. We liked it too much that when we got back to Jersey, we went to the store and made some. The other small plates, on the other hand, were just blah. Either it was too salty or just eh. Good thing we didn't totally blow our money on this place, but we thoroughly enjoyed it. read more

Let's put aside the price. This spot is in the airport so it's going to be expensive. Accept that, get over it, and then go grab a seat - preferably at the bar. Kris and I had a 7:something flight from DTW to Amsterdam where we would be starting our European Adventure. We're both a little weird about flying... we don't really mind it but we convince ourselves that we're going to be nervous. Then we're fine. Weird, right? The good thing is, it gives us an excuse to drink. Usually that means some lame airport bar with horrific beer. Not this time! Vino Volo is a welcome change to the pre-flight drinking game. Wow. Sparse and chic, the bar offers just a few seats - I hope you're lucky enough to get one. We were able to sit at the bar and greatly enjoyed the two flights we tried - a red and rose. From there we each picked a glass (or three) to have after. The wine selection is great but, more importantly, the sommalier working the day we were there kicked ass. She was sassy, friendly, knowledgeable and fun. She not only guided us through the selections we made but also had advice for what to drink when we were in different cities on our trip. The food is limited but excellent - I strongly recommend getting olives and a cheese plate. The half sandwich is teeny but the perfect size if you're more in the mood for tapas style which is a great way to go. We will definitely be popping in here the next time we fly. Hell, we'll probably sneak in after we land and before we head back to Ann Arbor! read more

Terrible service!!! I went in for a glass of wine before my flight. I sat down. No one greeted me. There were 2 guests sitting at tables and 3 sitting at the bar. 10 minutes went by and finally someone came to take my order. I was disappointed at their selection of reds by the glass, but got a glass anyway which was served right away. I had hoped to order some food and ask for some water but the server never came back to check on me. Finally, I had to go up to the bar to ask for my check. What a disappointing establishment. I love this place....sometimes I buy the cheapest airline ticket I can find so I can just hang out in Metro Airport- Mingle with the tourists, get a massage and then go next door to this gem! The wine, is reasonably priced and they carry and feature local wines. The staff is well behaved and are very helpful. Every time I travel, I try to make it through McNamera terminal so I can stop by this classy little space. The wine selection has always been versatile, even featuring "local" wines from the increasingly respectable Northwest Michigan region. The small plates offered are also not to be missed - with standout sandwiches. The staff is also worthy of mentioning. Every time I (or several recommended friends) stop in, each staff member has been remarkably knowledgeable and friendly. This makes for a truly comfortable pre-travel experience. Bizarrely good, Located between gates A-43 and A-45 in the McNamara Terminal building, once you're through security; short distance to the iconic water fountain. Sat down at one of the two person tables in a comfortable chair. Extraordinarily civilized wine list and waiters are actually able to discuss the characteristics of the wines (cab versus pinot versus the various whites) Plugs in the wall behind you for charging technology. Had the large chicken breast salad---chicken came thinly sliced warm on a cool spring lettuces and arugula---very very nice. Finished with a chocolate something or other---also nice. All up, for two and half hours of a nice environment, very decent food and good service (I know others said slow, but I didn't experience that)--$25. Would and will go again. read more

This is a little piece of heaven for a constant traveler who loathes the Russian Roulette of airport food. Cozy seating and ambience for an airport spot. Friendly staff who seem to know what they're talking about. I just love the bit of class this place offers with tasty treats that come in half sizes if you're not too hungry. The only reason I give it 4 instead of 5 stars is that those half sizes were surprisingly on the small side...I was hoping for New York City quality without the price tag. These are terrific spots to hide out in while on a long layover in an airport. I recently was able to enjoy the solitude of Vino Volo in Detroit's Macnamera Terminal. I was greeted within minutes of seating myself, and ordered the truffle mac and cheese. Clearly this is reheated in the back, it is some of the better food available in an airport. The portion size is very small (they are small plates), so I waited and ordered the roasted tomato soup drizzles with creme fraiche. This too was very good. The 4 stars is not so much for the food, but for the whole package. The attentiveness of the server, the food quality (for an airport), and the wine recommendations that paired perfectly with my small plates.
