My impression of Vinny's is quite conflicted and mixed. I was in Dubuque on business and a coworker of mine is very sensitive to gluten (moreso than most who live gluten-free). He found two spots in Dubuque who openly advertised themselves as offering a gluten-free menu. We opted for Vinny's and arrived at around 8pm on a very sleepy Monday night. A cool dark and lofty space with high ceilings and a cozy vibe especially during the winter months. Aside from two other diners and a couple more seated in the bar the place was empty. We were immediately seated (we had a very unnecessary reservation) and were presented with both the regular and gluten-free menus. So far so good. We both made our selections and promptly ordered. My coworker reminded the waitress of his strict gluten-free diet and she assured him that his needs would be accommodated. Since we both had ordered pasta dishes, we off-handedly inquired to make sure that separate water was used to boil my wheat-based pasta vs his wheat-free pasta. Many Italian restaurants will keep a pot of water on the boil as orders come into the kitchen. We were told that all pasta was cooked in the same pot/water. Hmmm, no go for someone with a gluten sensitivity. My coworker kindly asked if perhaps his meal could be prepared in a separate pot? The waitress seemed a bit miffed by this, but assured us that this could also be accommodated.
Salad, garlic bread and a couple glasses of very watery-tasting house chianti were served after 5-10 minutes. By now all of the remaining customers had left and people were cleaning up, vacuuming, etc. No problem...I'm sure we're the last customers of the day. Our food arrived in 20-30 minutes which was fine as we realized that boiling separate water, etc. was a special request.
My linguine with the spicy Vinny Sauce was quite tasty. The zip of the sauce and added chiles was very flavorful and required no extra seasoning. I ordered two meatballs which rounded out this otherwise minimal dish nicely.
My coworker reported his pasta to be 'OK' if a little underseasoned and bland. The available medley of the standard hot pepper flakes, grated Parmesan, salt and pepper might have been a necessity, but I'm not sure if he used any of them.
About halfway through our meal we started getting some looks from the kitchen and figured it was time to wrap it up.
I'm convinced if it hadn't been for the gluten-free issues and late hour, my experience might have been 3-4 stars, but I'm bothered by the fact that a place advertises itself as friendly to gluten-free needs (even offering a separate menu), but is sadly uneducated in what gluten-free actually means. read more
