It was my fault that I didn't go with him from the get-go. I had experiences with two others that were terrible: The first one installed a couple things that were falling out by the time he left, and the second one apparently doesn't need business because he didn't respond to me for over 10 days after coming to take a look at what I needed. But anyway, this review is about the AWESOMENESS that is Michael! He responded within a day of my contacting him, which was a great place to start. He asked me to let him know what I needed and set up a time within a week or so. Then he contacted me to let me know he'd had a cancellation and could come three days earlier if I wanted! Yes please!! Michael is so personable. I liked him from the moment I opened the door, literally. One of the first things he said to me was "Can I tell you something about this door?" Apparently he has lots of customers who don't realize their storm doors have a screen and wanted to show me (I already knew though!). The most important task I had for him on this visit was to reattach the handrail that had been removed by some movers, and which had before they removed it been loose and coming out of the wall. That handrail is now rock solid. I honestly think I could hang from it (and I'm not a small gal) and it would not budge. He patched the drywall from where it had been coming out of the wall, and then he checked the remaining four or five handrails in the house to make sure they are equally as strong. He also gave tips on some filters for the furnace, and suggestions for smoke detectors--which was very timely, because I had been researching them before he visited. He's not inexpensive but he's worth every darn penny. I won't ever use another handyman whilst I live here, and I'm already feeling sad in my heart that if/when we do move, it'll probably be to a near suburb or outlying neighborhood like Norwood Park that he doesn't service and I'm mourning the loss of this awesome dude as my go-to handymensch.

Between the email exchange and the visit, I came up with a list of to do's, including the disposal, toilet issues, door and shelf issues, lighting problems, etc. In addition to fixing them all, he gave me a long list of ideas and recommendations and easy fix its from air filters to fire/carbon monoxide detectors, to ceiling fans, to water heaters, and the list goes on. All in an hour. It was a tremendous value for the money. I can't recommend Michael enough.

The job consisted of: * Demo some existing framing * Re-frame around steel * Tie steel into walls for support I had gotten a few quotes from others for the job, but decided I would go with Tim at an hourly rate. In the end, it cost me less money to pay Tim hourly to complete the job, and I think I was likely more happy in the end as I was able to go onsite with Tim and sort through a number of issues (Tim could have easily done that himself, I just enjoy working on my house). Some things I really liked about working with Tim: * He's extremely prompt, and often arrived to the site early (I've worked with so many contractors on this project, arriving when they say is rare these days) * Tim is incredibly hard working. He worked 8 hours non-stop on my project for multiple days. There was no smoke breaks, lounging around, etc - Tim's there to work and get stuff done. Far too often I see other contractors spending only 3/4 of the time actually working, this was definitely not the case with Tim! * He adapted to changes easily some things took longer, some things went quicker and Tim was super flexible and easy to work with. I never felt Tim was working slower or anything to increase his billable hours. I stopped for lunch, Tim worked straight through and had a bunch more stuff done when I returned each day. * Easy going and generally great to work with. I had some last minute things I thought Tim could help with on the last day, not a problem, Tim was happy to stay and help with some odds and end carpentry even after working for about 7 hours straight that day. When all was said and done, I was very happy with the work Tim did, and I felt it cost me less than a lot of other people would've charged and had quoted. Don't be afraid of paying him hourly, I can tell you its honestly cheaper and easier than how much bloat is built into other quotes these days.

After I finished setting up the service appointment we discussed the time, location, and other details. I immediately placed an order from my local hardware store and to have all the items (appliances) shipped to my home. The day before the scheduled appointment the repairman messaged me that he made a mistake and that he was supposed to schedule my appointment for the following day. He also mentioned that I did not send him a deposit to lock in my appointment as if I lost the appointment due to not paying him a deposit. I was confused! We never discussed a deposit or a deposit amount when I spoke with the handyman over the phone. I did not see the other Yelpers reference in their post anything about Zelle quick paying their repairman for a deposit. I thought something was odd I immediately thanked him for his time and told him I would not need his company to complete the repairs!

The problem: Andersen inswing patio door very difficult to open & close. There were two problems:…read more worn out weatherstripping gasket and need for adjustment for this complicated door. It took 2 visits to measure to the satisfaction of Andersen to correctly identify the right replacement gasket (Andersen may have as many as 20 models). Before the repairs, I had to slam the door vigorously and finish by kicking the door in order to get it closed. Thieves robbed my next door neighbor, perhaps having seen how difficult it would be to open my door! After repairs, the back door can now be opened & closed like a normal door. It has proper weatherstripping that makes it more energy efficient. Good job, difficult, but mission was accomplished.
