I'll start off by saying Va Jack built our first and everything went well. Fast forward 5 years and…read morewe decided we wanted a more customized house. We decided to go back to Va Jack. We brought some plans we liked online and brought them to Kevin (owner), essentially same way we did before. Kevin said no problem I'll send to my architect. This is when it gets to why I'm giving them one star. The first time we built with Kevin he did everything himself design wise and didn't charge a dime. Foolish us we thought it was the exact same process. Kevin did not once mention that the architect he was giving our plans to was $5000. We were a little upset then but figured $5k in a loan was not a huge deal. When formulating our budget we told Kevin several times our max budget which INCLUDED our lot cost. Once again same as last time and something I have no idea how he missed. When finalizing our budget we were way over our max because Kevin "didn't realize" we wanted everything included. I had a text showing him that it was indeed talked about and after that he said "we ll work it out". We had to get a second plan and ended up not building with Kevin. Long story short Kevin was not willing to work with us on paying some of the fees owed on the first plan even though it was entirely his fault. Just wish he did the right thing.

We have been in our home since 2004. As any homeowner knows, repairs and remodels are part of…read moreowning a home. We had a leak coming from the tub in our second bathroom, which dripped through a light in our kitchen. The leak is why chose to remodel now. We selected 4 companies from Home Advisor to interview and bid on the project. From the very beginning, we liked Next Home Remodel. Matt was a great listener, and his bid undercut the competition by several thousand dollars. We decided to do surround walls, which are easy to wipe and clean, in the shower and the the ceiling above the shower (pictures below - -sorry they uploaded sideways) plus replacing the tub and toilet along with repainting the other walls in the bathroom. We did wait 5 1/2 weeks to get on the schedule after deciding to go with Next Home, and the wrong faucet was ordered (one for a shower only). Other than this minor issue, the only other thing was that Behr paint was used on the walls. A friend who does professional painting had recommended Benjamin Moore Aqua Bath and Spa. I probably should have clarified if I could substitute paint. We used a flooring with AquaGuard which looks as fabulous as any flooring I've seen, and as the rest of the story will tell you, is absolutely waterproof! If I could give our installers, Dave and Chris, 20 stars, I would. Dave, who did the drywalling, is a consummate professional who was conscientious and attentive. They do not get paid by the hour, but by the job. They have an interest, therefore, in doing things right and in a timely fashion. Our old tub required a saw to cut through it so that they could get it out! These guys worked tirelessly, but also cleaned up immaculately when they left for the day. If they left tools or part of the rubbish inside their trailer in the yard (which they did remove by the end of the job), we were asked for our consent. In addition, Dave worked hard to make sure our ceiling in the kitchen looked as great as the bathroom that we completely remodeled. After the install, we had a couple of problems. First, the temperature valve on the tub faucet wasn't opened all the way. With an email to Matt, Dave came out that same day and fixed the issue. Second, the flow of the water came out slowly. I didn't even think to check the water valves into the tub were open all the way, but again one email and Dave resolved the problem immediately. The new tub has a push-to-close drain, but not having one of these before, we had issues closing the tub. Via email, Matt was able to explain how this worked. Finally, we had an issue with water backing up out of the front base of the toilet and leaking into the kitchen (not in the same place as before). Our first thought was not that the installers had done something wrong, but we called Next Home anyway. We thought perhaps a faulty seal was to blame. After another email to Matt, Dave came out again and figured out a clog from the master bath caused a coupling on a drain pipe, which was situated crooked (and looks to have been installed that way), to leak. While frustrating to have this issue occur only 10 days after the remodel, Next Home came immediately and helped us discover the issue. Both Matt and Dave stated their desire is to continue to help and serve us. These guys are honest, fair, and knowledgeable. We plan to have them remodel our kitchen in the not too distant future. We would use them again and recommend the company to anyone looking for a fair price with a company that knows what service after the sale means.

Promise after promise went unfulfilled. He is a flat out liar and storyteller. Don't walk away from Matt Taylor and Next Home Remodeling, RUN! Do NOT be fooled by their low prices. You truly will get what you pay for! Look at the photos below to see the problems that appeared within weeks of completing the project. He has, in writing, promised to take care of the problems for MONTHS! I would not recommend this company to take out the trash! As a 100% VA-disabled veteran needing ADA-compliant features, if you value your time, money, or…read moresanity, do NOT build with Mitchell Homes--especially if you want anything beyond their bare-bones, builder-grade models. Their marketed "simple, affordable, no-down-payment building on your land" turned into 8 months of mismanagement, opacity, endless excuses, and zero progress. If you have not yet read JC's Google review of Mitchell Homes (Richmond), he articulated our experience very well. We signed in May 2025 for a custom AVA Farmhouse: $464,025 base + $393,202 in proposed upgrades = $857,227 total. 8 months later--with no finalized plans--we paid $16,641 just to walk away in disbelief. From day one, we did Mitchell's job for them: hand-delivered a redlined 24×36 AVA plan with numbered additions, provided multiple well/septic contractors, and clearly requested structural/ADA upgrades (e.g., 3-ft ADA doors $3k; zero-entry shower $9.2k). Despite weekly follow-ups, every inquiry led to new questions. Windows took over 4 months to finalize despite day-one specs for black-on-black casement. Repeated mistakes triggered redraws week after week. We quoted Pella/Lowe's prices ourselves--within $2k of their "in lieu of" costs--which left us unable to explain the pricing through normal errors or standard builder markups. Our original sales rep was fired. Then, cabinet prices ballooned from the advertised $48,000 "Gourmet Kitchen" to $104,344 all in (excluding appliances). After objecting, an EVP got involved and offered $55k for kitchen cabinets (no backsplash, appliances, etc.) + $15k for butler's pantry cabinets (See image). Retail equivalent was $26k for both, installed. They would not provide line item breakouts. Rheem HPWH: $3,500 (after credit) vs. $2,300 retail Kohler Tub: $10,500 (after credit) vs. $2,500 retail Roughly 30% of the CPRs appeared to reference the same items, compounding costs for the identical scope. There is not enough space to call everything out in these reviews. They claimed we'd be expedited in the drafting queue due to delays. After weeks, still "waiting on well/septic quotes." I called the same contractor and got a quote in 24 hours; Mitchell took another week. Plans were still not in drafting after 5 weeks, we had been told they were; then emails asked about the ADA doors--drawn undersized/non-standard--triggering more CPRs, repricing, redraws, and delays. Projected close of March 2026 was now September 2026+. VP of Sales, Freddy Vincent, admitted many issues were Mitchell's fault and promised that no further price increases would occur. That written letter never came. Mind you, we were paying for the 240-day price lock and STILL needed it because we were guaranteed to blow past that timeline. Based on direct retail quotes we obtained for the same materials, Mitchell's pricing was consistently far higher, often more than double the quotes we received elsewhere. If wrong, Mitchell is welcome to share their markup formula publicly. I'm pretty sure Pella windows, cabinets, lumber, insulation, tubs, etc., don't have "better build quality" when Mitchell installs, versus buying direct from the company with their installers. No amount of sales copy, whether in emails or on voice calls, is going to change that. After terminating on Dec 31, 2025, it took senior leadership 3 weeks to reach back out. In that same timeframe, we: Bought a doublewide home with cash Poured footers Secured permits Drilled the well Had the home delivered I would avoid Mitchell Homes. Non-Richmond offices seem even more clueless amid rapid expansion and inexperienced hires; they will send every single question you have to Richmond for an answer. Our experience mirrors multiple BBB complaints (delays, surprise charges, poor communication) and JC's review; it's not isolated. Eight months, $16,641 wasted. We had zero faith that costs wouldn't explode further and zero faith in their employees. It was such a poor experience; we went from building a million-dollar dream home to buying a double-wide just to be done with it.
