I ordered take out as we didn't have the time to wait for a table and sit down to enjoy the meal,…read morebut the food tasted just as good regardless. I had to get the Blueberry Pancake, as this was advertised everywhere during my search for places to eat/try. Surprisingly you can get a single stack, double, or triple, but it made the most sense to get a triple stack for $15 ($5 per pancake) rather than a single for $7 or double for $13. Or maybe you want to try a variety of different pancakes so getting a single makes sense. Anyways...the Blueberry Pancakes are delicious as advertised and would get at least one regardless. We also tried the Banana Nut Pancakes (did the triple stack as well for $15) and those taste just as magical as the Blueberry Pancakes. So come early if you want to be seated immediately, otherwise plan on waiting for a table or you can order it to go and be on your merry way.

When we went in there for breakfast, the line was again at the door. I understand Bar Harbor is a vacation spot with Acadia but nonetheless this place was booming the entire time that we were there. I ended up getting eggs and coffee, some toast, and a chocolate chip pancake. My friend also got blueberry pancakes, which were absolutely loaded with blueberries. In general we had a really nice time. The food was pretty big. The service was really nice. The atmosphere was a ton of fun and overall it was just really great comfort food. I definitely recommend trying this out.

We didn't know that savory crepes were a thing and we now love them! Also, it comes with a side salad, which was an added bonus. We went here before our whale watching cruise, so we ended up getting our food to go and ate it on the boat. We also got a blueberry muffin and blueberry scone which were wonderful! Highly recommend stopping in!

The staff just doesn't acknowledge you as a customer until they are ready to take your order. I expected better. We were going on a whale watch tour next door and wanted to get some good food to take with us...we would be disappointed. I paid $15 for the smoked salmon bagel and it was horrible. Couldn't even taste the salmon let alone the smoke. It was mostly onions and tasted of onions and cream cheese more than anything. My coffee was $4 and lacked complexity, refills were $1. The blueberry muffin was gluten-free and for all of the stuff we got with blueberries in it while in Maine, these did not taste fresh or local. The English muffin was the worst thing...maybe it was the gluten free bun, maybe it was the toppings...just not great. The one that that was good was the Choco boom. It was like a breakfast chocolate milkshake. All this cost $50 so once you add in a tip which it defaults to 25, 20, and 18 as your options, it's a $60 breakfast that wasn't as good as a hotel breakfast. The inside of the store is super small, I'm assuming most people want to eat outside and look at the bay. But the inside is so small even with the short line (2-3 people in front of us) the layout was very awkward and people were getting mixed up where the line was supposed to go. I'll skip this place next visit to Bar Harbor.

So, if you're considering dining here, which I highly recommend, put yourself on that waitlist! I got the Whole Steamed Lobster ($33), which comes with a cup of clam chowder, half a corn on a cob, and fries. The lobster is about one and a half pounds, so this was worth the value. And of course I left very full and satisfied. Yes, it was messy to eat, but much worth it to me. Some of the other items my party ordered included Lobster Roll ($38), which tasted great. The Bulgogi Beef Wraps ($16) was an interesting choice someone picked for an appetizer, but I'd personally skip that. The Side Street Tacos ($20), which they use whatever the catch of the day is, I'd recommend if you're looking for a lighter meal. FYI: All lobster dishes are market price, so the prices I have listed here may not reflect the current economics of lobster prices when you order.

After walking by a few different spots, we decided to walk into Side Street Cafe and put our name down. We had about a 45 minute wait, which allowed us to walk around a bit more, and got a text less than 40 minutes later that our table was ready. We were sat on the bar side (vs restaurant) but the menu was the same. The server seemed extremely busy and that we sat there for a solid 5 minutes before menus and someone greeting us. She was kind but clearly handling a lot of tables on her own. Given that the menu didn't really speak to a ton of us, we decided to split the lobster roll and buffalo wings! The lobster roll was pretty good for market. There were large pieces of lobster with little mayo and not a lot of butter. It was a bit too much for me without a ton of flavor, so it was not my favorite (especially since I'm not a huge fan of shellfish). The wings were good though. Pretty typical and nothing overly special, but were piping hot and enjoyable! There was a band starting to play, which got really loud, and another reason we decided to leave. But otherwise, I'd try it again.. maybe hope for the restaurant side instead.

The Black Friar is one of my favorite places to come and eat at when I'm in Bar Harbor. It has a…read morequiet charm in the dining room that perfectly compliments the town it's in and they serve the best fish and chips in town. As stated above, the fish and chips is the thing to get here. The fish is clearly fresh (not frozen), cooked to order and has an almost unbelievable level of perfect crisp on the batter that coats it. It's also wonderful to see that they're serving it with some fresh-cut fries as there's such an overwhelming improvement in both taste and texture that you get with fresh (never frozen) fries. The fries are also perfectly cooked with a good crisp on the outside, but still fluffy potato in the middle. They then went the extra step and have house-made tartar sauce and slaw to go with it. It's a simple dish in concept, but this place goes the extra mile to make you something that's both delicious and worth coming back for. The dining room is on the smaller side, so if you have a large party it would be a good idea to call ahead and make a reservation to be sure there's a place for your entire group when you get there. I came a little later in the evening (maybe around 7pm) and found it to be pleasantly quiet, though not empty. I was greeted quickly by the owner and seated quickly. I also found the staff to be pleasant and fun to chat with while I waited for my food (I sat at the bar). It's also worth noting they have a full bar and a good choice of local draft beer to choose from.

Update: See the business owner's response to my review for a look into his lack of professionalism…read moreand the unwelcoming attitude we experienced. We visited on Thursday, October 22. If your staff doesn't have time to answer a question about the menu on a weekday in mid October, maybe you should seat less people. I've ranked plenty of dive bars higher than Black Friar, and my use of the word mid to describe the drinks says nothing about how much "coddling" I receive in my personal life. I suppose I should have used the proper word, mediocre (at best). We sat at the Black Friar Pub bar and it was honestly one of the worst bar experiences we've had. We planned on staying for longer, but ended up just getting one drink there and leaving because the bartenders acted like we were bothering them by being there. We asked one of the bartenders a question and he couldn't have looked more irritated, then walked away without answering. Everyone was unfriendly and it ruined the experience. The drinks were also very mid for the price point. The vibe was just off from the moment we stepped in. It was dark and weirdly quiet to the point where we felt like we had to whisper. We were really looking forward to trying it, but definitely won't be going back.
