Village Hardware is a throwback worthy of visiting ................ You can't find the old style of hardware store any more with variety and the ability to buy a few pieces of what you need. While on this visit, an employee actually asked me if I needed assistance - and meant it! You have to check out my pics of their nuts and bolts. As a DIYer, I was in heaven. I was looking in bins, just because. They had fasteners, I hadn't seen before, but now I know they exist when I need that certain something in a particularly hard project. The open stock round bins brought a smile on my face as I remembered those bins as a kid going with my grandfather to the hardware store. I've shopped at this hardware store purely for convenience, but after repeatedly witnessing how the owner treats his staff, I will no longer be returning. On multiple visits, I've seen employees--often teenagers--spoken to in a demeaning and belittling way. During my most recent visit, I asked an employee a simple question. He went to confirm the answer with the owner and was immediately talked down to. After hearing this, I approached the owner directly to ask the same question myself and unfortunately received the same condescending attitude. It's also worth noting that there are no prices listed on items, which makes shopping unnecessarily frustrating, and if you need to return anything--unused or opened--good luck. It's disappointing to see workers treated this way, and it explains why there seems to be constant staff turnover. Customer service starts with how employees are respected, and sadly, that's lacking here. Despite the longer commute, I'll be taking my business to the other hardware store on the island moving forward. read more

This hardware store is pure vintage, so cool, so full of things, even the gum machines at the front are pure nostalgia. I was with the boyfriend in Coronado some weeks back and he needed to buy some items. They did not have what he was looking for but the customer service was outstanding, we spend a great time actually checking how well organize was everything and thinking how do they managed to know where everything goes. The signage in the facade is very nice, like everything in Coronado, colorful and retro. read more

Older man whom owns the store is very rude. Customer service was terrible and he tricked my fiancé into paying almost double what the price would be anywhere else. When I went to return the product he wouldn't take it back though it wasn't opened. read more

Came here last weekend to get nails. An employee named Glenn was working all by himself in the store (and as the cashier) and had several customers but still found the time to inform me of the 2 boxes of free nails available (rather than needing to buy some.) He was so friendly that I decided to ask for advice for my backyard hose attachment problem. I found his advice to be so helpful that I got 90's nostalgia (back when store employees were nice and cared about customer service. ) I would definitely recommend over a home depot where you get professionally avoided by employees when you need something. read more

Probably one of the cutest little hardware stores around. My boyfriend found himself in need of purchasing a small screwdriver while on vacation to fix something and it was located right next to the restaurant we dined in. While he was grabbing what he needed, I browsed through all the kitchy gifts and found a key I bought to make into a christmas ornament. DONT SHOP HERE! Dont care if the owner is a navy veteran or not. I've never been so offended in my life. Walked in for teflon & a faucet adapter (maybe $6 worth of stuff), grabbed the teflon but they didn't have the correct adapter so I put the teflon back on the shelf & left. Within a second TWO employees came out screaming very loudly at me asking to search me (after they had watched me like a hawk from the second I walked in) and asked to search me. Not just once, but TWICE. I've never stolen anything in my life & I pride myself on honesty & respect so you can understand how offended I was. I feel the general public should beware & refrain from going into this joke of a hardware store. It's very uncomfortable inside the store without the employee watching your every move & screaming at you, and theres a good chance they won't have what you need anyways. I've shopped here multiple times over the years, so I'm no "new customer" or stranger to this place. Zero stars is more accurate for Ace Coronado. You've been warned. read more

Terrible. Today I tried to return an item unused less than 24 hours purchased in unopened packaging and this box cutter was considered a tool that couldn't be returned. This is my second experience w. this hardware store and both were bad. Their policies do not support good customer service. Its not worth the island convenience. It really isn't. A really well-stocked local hardware store. If they don't have it, you don't need it. I had been looking for some quality pants hangers, you know, the ones with metal clamps. Looked in several big-box stores, no luck. Since I was in Coronado, I thought I'd give this place a try. Village Hardware appears quite small, but once you are inside, you notice two things immediately: The wooden floors, and the incredible array of merchandise. There was only one person staffing the place, and she was ringing up a customer. I asked her about the pants hangers, and she directed me to the back area of the store, where, amazingly, I found exactly what I was looking for ! Only the hangers were way up at about the 10 foot level. The staffer immediately set up a stool and fetched the hangers for me. All done with a smile. I was very glad I visited this store ! read more

The return policy here is non- existent. I bought a polyurethane spray for a furniture project and the spray left the furniture with milky white blotches all over the black paint. I went back to the store in an attempt to exchange it for another clear gloss but was met with three rude teenagers working at the store. They belittled me despite my concerns, had no customer service skills and told me "well since it's not broken, you can't return it anyways." The boy with the curly brown hair said this with a straight face, blunt and curtly as he walked away. I don't know about you, but anyone in the customer service industry knows that's not how you talk to someone especially a regular customer that buys product. The products are over priced, and frankly I don't feel like being undermined by teenage boys. I will bring my business elsewhere. read more

You will be greeted by a lovely young woman who is friendly and refreshingly helpful-they even help find your item (unlike the big corporate stores!). I was in the area and I needed Blue Tape--painting tape. I wasn't sure if they'd have it because the store is so small. However, they pack soooooo much into so little space. The prices are okay, also, which was surprising. The lady who was working there was super-sweet and helpful. I was looking to get a key, made and they got my key copied very quickly. Very convenient location since I work on the Naval Base.

Bought the wrong type of socket set. Realized it 5 min after I left the store. Turned right back around to exchange it to find out they have a "no returns policy". There are no signs posted anywhere in the store, I looked. Oh but guess what, it is printed at the very bottom of your receipt! So now I have an extra $70 socket set that I can't even utilize for anything. Thanks for nothing!! If you shop here make sure you have exactly what you need when you leave the store!! read more

The staff is very wllling to assist and they have just about everything you need. Its convenient to walk to. However, it would pay to price shop depending on what you are purchasing. I found most items cost 10-20% more here than at Coronado Hardware store just a few blocks east on Orange Avenue. read more

So tonight I went in to buy some duct tape for one of my sons school project. When I got to the counter, I had asked the clerk Josh to check and see if I had a credit and to please apply it. I also asked if they still do the military discount, which I am very grateful for. When the cost of the duct tape came up to about $15 I was taken back as that seemed very high for a roll of tape. So I looked on google and the first result was Amazon for $4.89 or something close to that amount. I kindly asked Josh if they priced matched and he said I don't know I have never been asked that so he asked the older man that was also behind the desk and who was the one that applied my military discount. Immediately the man got aggressively confrontational and gave me the stare of death and in a loud confrontational voice asked me "what they Hell is a Price Match?" Then he asked me if I wanted pay his rent. I then told the man you don't have to be so rude an easy No we don't would be appropriate. So then the man came out from the counter and got in my face and tried to tell me how expensive Coronado is and "Boy I am standing on the most expensive place in San Diego". They he asked in a very condescending way "Boy where are you from?" I then told him I am from Coronado and then he said "No Your Not!" He kept inching closer and closer to my face where he got about 3.5 inches from my nose and I just was taken back and told him he is a very Rude person and that I would NEVER Shop here again. I was so taken back that I forgot to take the Tape I just bought and the clerk Josh said loudly as I was walking out of the store, "Don't forget your tape". I then quickly turned around and the man through the heavy roll of tape at me and it hit my right middle finger and jammed it. The tape fell on the floor and I told the guy I think you broke my finger. The man then said well Ill be looking forward to your attorneys call or something to that effect. HOW CRAZY!!! AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE THE PLAGUE!!! I fully plan on contacting the police department, Ace HQ and my attorney. No person should have to be subject to Mob tactics when you ask a simple question. read more

If there was a negative rating scale on Yelp, I would be more than happy to give Village Hardware -5 stars. I was so displeased with my experience here that I made a Yelp account specifically to post an honest review about how bad this place is. Village Hardware, especially their rude and overly cranky owner, were single handedly responsible for ruining my day. First off, the prices are outrageous. $18.00 for 6 inch needle nose pliers which are like $6.00 at any other hardware store... Second of all, they do not inform you that there is a no return policy whatsoever, so if by any chance you find yourself stumbling into this store, do not fall into the same trap I did before it was too late. Last of all, and certainly most importantly, the customer service is pitiful. I accidentally bought 6 inch needle nose pliers and came back with 10 minutes to find the owner yelling at me about how he's not going to allow me to return the item although the pliers were still in the original package and in perfect condition. I would rather get mauled by a grizzly bear on the Pacific Crest Trail than have to step foot in Village Hardware again... let alone have to see that owner again. I'm just kidding about the grizzly bear part (kind of), but seriously, DON'T COME HERE! read more

I've been a customer here since moving to Coronado 8 years ago. Love the hardwood floors, the attentive service and the fact that the prices aren't over the top. It's not huge, so there are some things you're not going to find, but you'll be surprised how much they do have. Parking might be tricky (I either park behind or ride my bike) but, big big plus, you don't have to go off the island. read more

I love to support local businesses, and I bought many an item here until recently. My big complaint is their return policy. Seriously, you can't return an item because it's been opened? This is a hardware store! Most people are involved in a self repair job and the item needs to be opened to see if it works. I have also tried to return speciality lightbulbs, still in their unopened package, and they wouldn't take those back either. What a horrible business practice! Despite its convenience because I live in the neighborhood, I won't go back. I would advise to be sure you have the right item, before purchasing anything here. read more

I am so sorry I ever went to this store to find a part I needed. Big mistake, the owner was so rude when he couldn't figure out what I needed. I needed a simple part for my bathroom sink. I finally had to go to home depot to get the part, which I did, and they knew exactly what I needed. The owner of village hardware in Coronado is one of the rudest people I have ever met. He will never get my business again. Just because he owns a store in Coronado doesn't mean he has the right to treat customers like they are beneath him.
