I've been to Kelley's Island many times but never to this particular bar/restaurant. They had live…read moremusic over the weekend so I tried it out. Upon entering, the inside bar was pretty empty. The bartender seemed annoyed to help and service was slow. We ordered food as they have a bbq smoker in the back on the patio. Ordered the Brisket Philly with fresh cut fries. The food took about 30 minutes and was served without utensils, napkins, or asking if we wanted ketchup or anything. We had to flag the bartender down and she brought over what we needed. The brisket was really good. The fries were very undercooked, which was disappointing as I love fresh cut fries. When the band started, the inside bar started to fill a bit and the outside patio bar was pretty full. The outside bartenders were much more attentive and friendly. We enjoyed the band and drinks outside. Some of the patio tables were more shaded than others - it's definitely hot back there when the sun comes out. Prior to leaving, we went back inside to order some sandwiches to go and again, they took about 30 minutes. The service with the inside bartender did not improve. I have mixed feelings about this place. I think it has potential; needs better attitudes from the staff. It's a great place to see a band.

We ended up eating here 2 days in a row! I chose this restaurant for our Saturday night dinner…read morebecause the specials on the board out front and the dessert list looked great, and they were. Saturday night was pretty popular and the patio was full, so we sat inside, which is why our photos were rather dark. We started with a round of drinks. I had a glass of rose. Note that the drinks menu is several pages longer than the food menu, with beer, wine, and a variety of specialty and standard cocktails. They also have an espresso bar. It wasn't on the menu, but we ordered the Street Corn dip from the specials board on the sidewalk. We got a nice sized serving, and it was very good. I had the za'atar roast chicken for my entree, and it was delicious! The chicken comes with a lemon yogurt sauce, and Fattoush salad, but the salad was kind of a cross between Fattoush and tabbouleh, with pita chips and a grain base. It was a great combo, and the chicken was very juicy and seasoned nicely. I ended up with a slice of the almond cake, which was moist and had sliced almonds on top. Very much needed after missing out in the ice cream stop this afternoon! One of my friends had a bowl of gumbo and the other one had the taco pie. Since everyone enjoyed their dinner, and we confirmed that the patio was dog friendly, we returned with Miss Pup for brunch. We were able to snag a patio seat with a super friendly server. Miss Pup mostly hung out under the table, but managed to convince some other diners to pet her. We went with some plates for the table - Chicken and Waffle, Chilaquiles, and the special Quiche, which had sundried tomatoes, bacon and feta. All 3 portions were just right for us. The chicken was really moist and the waffle had slightly crispy edges. It came with some fruit and syrup. The quiche slice was generous and it came with a large portion of salad with a fruity vinaigrette. The sundried tomatoes were a really fun addition! I chose the chilaquiles. I'm pretty sure the chips were fried fresh (the ones last night were not), and I liked that it had beans and pico on top! This dish did not contain enchilada sauce, it was more like breakfast nachos, but I really enjoyed it. This place is definitely worth a stop, and the menu stands out from the standard island fish and chips and burgers fare (not that I dislike those things, just something different)!

We came for Friday night sunset dinner. The West Bay Inn is hopping, pretty much all the time. We…read morewere able to snag a patio seat pretty close to the edge for a good view, and quickly got drinks. I had a margarita and the others ordered canned seltzer. The margarita was $5, the seltzers closer to $7. The marg was just OK, not a bad size, chunky salt rim, not exactly cold. For dinner, I had the walleye basket. It was also OK - 2 large pieces of fish, and some obviously frozen fries. The first piece of fish was good, crunchy breading, flakey fish. The second piece had multiple bones and it still had the skin on, which isn't my favorite in breaded fish, so got messy picking it apart. My friend ordered the chicken bacon ranch flatbread and that was surprisingly good, with garlicky sauce and plenty of chicken chunks. We did catch the sunset cannon fire, and in spite of knowing about it, were still all caught off guard! The vibe is great, there were a lot of people having a fun, and both live and recorded music going on. More for the vibes than the food, but it was fun.

Odd--for reasons I'm still trying to wrap my head around. Kelley's Island doesn't offer endless options, so I guess "beggars can't be choosers" applies here. Bottom line: come with your expectations firmly tapered. You might stay because it's there, but I wouldn't go for the food.
