Wow! What a find. I was just passing through and decided to stop in for a tasting and I'm so glad I did. A little off the beaten path but the drive was gorgeous. Villa Appalaccia Winery is a self sufficient vineyard and bottling operation with a variety of Italian inspired wines. The grounds are breathtaking with mountainside views and Italian inspired architecture complete with a stone fired pizza gazebo. They had live music on the porch which was such a lovely perk. The staff was very welcoming, warm laid back and kind. Tastings are $15 and worth every penny to taste all 8 of their featured wines. All of the wines are dry, which I loved but they also had one dessert wine, a bubbly prosecco, and a rosé sangria. All the wines had unique and interesting noses and were clean and balanced, many vintages having won awards. The Sangiovese was my favorite. The winemaker also let me try a coveted sip of "The Buffalo" wine which is aged in bourbon barrels giving it a rich leggy, almost fortified texture and finish that is very unique on the palate. This is a must stop destination if you are so fortunate to be in the area of Floyd, you will not leave dissatisfied. read more

Had a large group tasting and buying their wine. A few didn't want wine so they brought a few low alcohol canned drinks. One of the staff came and snatched the drinks out of their hands and poured them out saying " We're not going to lose our license because you're drinking this!" I would have understood if they would have explained politely and asked us to pour out the drinks but that attitude was inexcusable. We won't be back. Also the place is a dump! The owners are very kind and really take their time during your wine tasting. I tasted 8 - 9 wines for $10, which is reasonable. So yummy, I brought home two bottles and will likely go back before we head back toward Raleigh. They also serve food, and on the weekends pizza from their pizza oven. One of the best winery visits during a 4 day trip. They changed ownership weeks before my visit, but everything was running so smoothly I hope they keep things exactly as they are! Villa focuses on Italian varietals, including ones that are hardly ever seen in Virginia. Placed right off the Blue Ridge parkway, it also has one of the best views of any winery in the area. 12 acres of vines, but not sure what their production is. My server was their tasting room manager; I briefly got to chat with the owners who were also running around. While the wine was excellent, the service easily matched it. I wish my notes were more detailed; sadly I was too busy chatting it up to write down what I was tasting. What I tried: Pinot Grigio: Citrusy; had a little Vermentino as well. Allegra: A prosecco-style wine that was really light and refreshing. Sangiovese (with a little Cab Franc): Italy's most popular red grape, light bodied. Toscanno: Tuscan style wine; forget the grapes but I enjoyed it. Allianico: Fruity red wine that was smooth and light on tannin. Not tasted but available are the 100% Vermentino, Corvinna and Malvasia; all Italian grapes perhaps unique in Virginia to here (except I think Barboursville..maybe...). We loved all the wines which has been a first for us, we've visited 5 VA wineries. We really enjoyed the Pinot Grigio, the sparkling white Allegra, and the red Toscanello. Just an opinion, but if they had more eye catching labels/rebranded, this wine would be in all the local grocery stores because you know who buys and drinks a lot of wine? Millennials. And you know what kind of wines millennial like to drink? Those with cool labels. Don't believe me? See Whitebarrel formerly know as Attimo wines. We love to buy local wines and a hipper label means we'd be gifting it to family members. Bottles of wine cost between $17-$30 dollars with discounts for multiple bottles. Cheese plates are offered on the weekends, $22, which we found to be extremely pricey compared to the other wineries' offerings in the area. The scenery: This Villa is situated in the blue ridge mountains with tables inside and outside, room to walk around, and bocci ball. Make a trip out to Villa Appalaccia. Buy these wines. This place has a neat location tucked away in the hills. It does have that Tuscan feel on the hillside. But, the wine was not good. I'd give the wine two stars. I guess there is a reason other Virginia vineyards don't plant and make wine with the red Italian grapes? The bread and cheese platter was ok but we would have ordered a wood fired Pizza if it was available on Saturday. They had live music on a Saturday afternoon which was cool. The view was nice and the bartender and owner were delightful to talk to. This is a small thing but the building had a fake trying-too-hard-to-be-Italian feel to it. Probably nothing the owners can do about it though and the covered upstairs patio is nice. Really can get over how disappointed we were in the red wine. read more

A much smaller alternative to Chateau Morrisette, Villa Appalaccia grows its own grapes around Stuart and has a tasting room right next to the FloydFest site. GPS was accurate, which we find to be unusual when trying to find things off the Parkway! We stopped in for a tasting ($7 for 7 wines) and left with a bottle of Aglianico. If we'd had more time, we definitely would have sat and enjoyed a glass and the beautiful landscape. They are under new ownership in the last year and the owner was very approachable and friendly. It seemed dog and kid friendly. There was a corner set aside with art and lego supplies for the littlest ones. They also have a pizza oven outside but not sure if they have a regular menu or if that's just for special occasions. They were offering a cheese plate for $23 that was very popular! Their Italian varietals are excellent and we liked all of them, even the dessert wine. The price point is a bit higher than we usually spend (around $20-30) and they only had two whites, which seemed most popular given that it was summertime. A lot of the other tasters passed on the reds offered but they were so wonderful, albeit a bit heavy for this time of year. It is a small winery so they can only fit about 8 or so for a tasting and we did have to wait a turn or two. We went on a weekday so I can only imagine how busy it must be on weekends. So glad to know about this place; been coming to the area for almost 40 years and never knew this little gem existed! Come here to visit Italy (no need to bring your passport!) This hidden gem was well worth its 1 ish mile detour off the Blue Ridge Parkway. It's sandwiched between another winery and the national parks with a few overlooks of amazing breathtaking views. Floyd being a few miles away (think.... up and coming "People's Republic of Boulder" focused on art and music). This is a great location when you want to get away from a busy city for the weekend and be one with nature and vino (of course!) The wines here are beyond phenomenal and high Italian flair. You won't get wines like this elsewhere in Virginia. The complexity and depth are beyond exceptional. What you taste in the beginning of the sip won't be the same flavor in the end, and the old world vines will immediately have you turning to the person next to you saying "when I visited Tuscany" or "when I was last in Europe..." Kind of effect. While you're here, get a cheese board. It's a lunch and a half. Plus we opted in for the reserve tasting and it didn't disappoint. The Cabernet Franc 2007 was my fave. My husband liked the Aglianico, as well. We spent the afternoon there. We were the fourth couple / family that walked out with a case. Not just bottles of wine..... A case of wine. This winery is really doing everything right. My local friend who brought me here raved about how much more complex their wines are, and better bouquets, than the nearby Chateau Morrisette. She also mentioned that the new owners (as of about the last year) provide a vibe that is superior to the previous owners. All the wines I've tasted here on my two visits are quite wonderful. Visiting the tasting room and hanging outside on the property was such a beautifully relaxed yet elevated experience, the food was very good, and I just love their canine policy! (Bring your dog!) Our brother-in-law, who is quite the wine aficionado, just can't get enough of their wine. We gave him two bottles of the Toscanello for Christmas last year and he keeps dropping "hints" (not hints, haha) that these are the wine he expects in future, so we picked up a case this time and a few bottles of their other varieties. Definitely recommend this as a "can't miss" experience for most anyone visiting this area, especially any wine lover. read more

My favorite winery on this visit to the mountains of Southwest Virginia. Wandering around without WAZE working to give us directions and Zero bars cellphone service, I saw what looked like a winery, no sign, and found it by just turning down a side road off the Blue Ridge Parkway. Looking like a winery on a hillside in Italy, the wines all have an Italian flair. A beautiful bread and cheese platter was delicious- more than enough to feed four people for $22. Along with a glass of wine, we enjoyed outstanding views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, breezes, and sunshine. You really won't want to leave this place. read more

This is a BEAUTIFUL little winery right off the Blue Ridge Parkway that specializes in Italian style wines. SUPER rare for Virginia which is overrun with Cab Francs and sweeter style wineries. We stopped in for a nice afternoon tasting and enjoyed chatting with the winemaker about her journey. All of the wines we sampled were creative and delicious. My favorite was their 2011 Sangiovese - a gorgeous vintage that has aged well. They only have limited quantities left and only let you buy two bottles per customer. It's totally worth it. They have a cheese/meat plate option you can get to sit and enjoy some wine with an absolutely gorgeous view. A BIG perk for us -- they had a little table set up with coloring books and crayons for kids, so my five year old was easily entertained while we sampled the wines. We walked out with an entire case and will probably be back again the next time we are in the area! read more

Pretty good place... if you're looking for wineries in the southwestern area of Virginia, this is probably going to be your best bet. Chateau Morrissette is great in a lot of ways, very commercial but nice... this is more about the wine. They do a lot of things very well. Their whites are not nearly as good as their reds. The reds are mostly (or all?) Italian varietals. These are the best Italian grapes I've had in Virginia (with the exception of the Nebbiolo at Breaux which is fantastic). This is where you'll get the better Tuscan/Chianti style grapes. Their Sangiovese was great and their Super Tuscan style was fantastic. They had a sweet desert wine with raspberries that was a hit with the ladies but I still enjoyed it as well. Nice looking place although hard to find so make sure you know where you're going especially if you've already stopped by a few wineries. read more

I was a little underwhelmed by this winery. One drawback was the fact the wines I really wanted to try (Cab Franc and Sangiovese) were not available for tasting. Plus, the wait for a tasting was nearly 30 minutes, and they weren't that busy. The wines spotlighted in the tasting were highly unusual (for VA) Italian varietals that were too heavy for a summer tasting. The Pinot Grigio was the best option for the hot Memorial Day we visited. The tasting room was stifling hot; even our pourer commented on that (how about a few fans?) The views - well, this is off the Blue Ridge Parkway, so the views are incredible. The picnic tables were sort of strewn about, and not all had umbrellas (this location and Veramar in northern VA share that attribute; maybe it's an Italian thing). The location is a bit hard to find. Blue Ridge Parkway does not allow those state grape cluster signs, so do your research before visiting! I would recommend this location for families with kids, as there is plenty for kids to see and do (bocce ball...) read more

You know what? I was super impressed with this place. Having enjoyed many wines from California and living in NOVA, I am used to some really great local wines. From my experience, the wines/wineries near that part of VA/NC are usually overly sweet and frankly not that great. BUT the wines at Villa Appalaccia were actually very good. We bought three bottles and sat outside with our cheese and crackers and enjoyed our hour with our family. The lady pouring was very friendly and informative and the property itself was very impressive. They had bocce to play and a good amount of places to sit and relax outside and also some seating inside. The view was beautiful and the prices were VERY reasonable. It is worth a visit. read more

This vineyard is celebrating their 25 anniversary this year. We went in on a sunday and were the only ones there. I felt a little out of place doing the tasting and having the person that worked there overlook my tasting sheet. The wines were very tasty but the one that stood out to me was the "raspberry-cab" it was something I had never had before but you could really taste the raspberries!! I feel I would have enjoyed the experience more if more people would have been around. This is right near the spot floyd fest is at so I can see this getting really crowed then! They must have too much money as they don't care about making any off of us. We walked out and went to another winery down the street. Ms. B. and I were staying at a nearby cabin for New Year's Eve, and had dinner reservations at Chateau Morrisette, nearby. We discovered Villa Appalaccia, which was very close by, was open on New Year's Eve afternoon, and so we decided to give it a try. They had only a limited sampling of wines for New Year's, but they were reputedly their best. After the tasting, I'd have to say that they may have been not only their own best but some of the best regional wines we've tasted. Of particular note were the Sangiovese and Aglianico, and we bought a bottle of each. We learned that Villa Appalaccia's wine is made from grapes that are grown in slate earth, rather than the typical clay of the region. Apparently, it makes a significant difference, for both wines were dry, yet rich in fruit flavor, with varying hints of oak and pepper. Fortunately, I had marked the location of the winery on my GPS, because it can definitely be a bit hairy to reach if you're relying on signs on the Blue Ridge Parkway (there aren't any). I give the winery a high recommendation for both their product and the scenic locale. read more
