So as a woman who games a lot (mainly war games and D&D) I am always concerned going into game stores due to being stared at and condescended many times before. I love Viking Hobby. Jessica and Mark are excellent and attentive to their customers and are extremely knowledgeable about different games and product lines. They have a huge selection, especially for such a comparatively small space and if they don't have it, they'll usually know when it's supposed to hit the shelves. I first found Viking Hobby when I was an Undergraduate. I can say that it is one of my favorite places to indulge my modeling and history hobby. For such a small store they are extremely well stocked with both plastic models and that latest magazines and periodicals related to my hobbies. Viking Hobby was actually recommended to us by some people we ran into at another gaming store, so we decided to check it out. The place is tiny - only a couple tight isles, with much of the RPG and boardgame stock stored behind the counter. They do offer a 10% discount on new boardgames, so make sure you ask! The store definitely has a focus on models and wargames, but their selection of games is actually very good if you take the time to look. They also offer used/consignment items, although with the price set by the owner - you are often times better off buying new. Jessica wasn't in when my wife and I visited the store - her name was mentioned along with the recommendation and I see it in several reviews as well. However, the staff member on hand was still very knowledgable - although he only turned on the charm when my wife and I were about to depart empty-handed after perusing for a few minutes. He was able to make some recommendations based on the kind of game we were looking for and the size of our group - and we didn't end up leaving empy-handed afterall. My friend and I are avid Munchkin players. We love to play but we constantly ran across the same cards. That can be repetitive and boring, so we decided to purchase some expansion packs. No stores in our area (North Highlands) had heard of them. We found Viking hobby through Google after searching card shops with little to no luck. We found the store easily, The person working there was friendly, and he even offered to back order some of them if we called in earlier in the week before our purchase. I recommend this shop for anyone who plays munchkin. Aside from our quest for more cards, we found the store had a plethora of hobby supplies. Models, tiny soldiers, Rpg books,you name it. My general problem with gaming hobby shops is the elitist attitudes you generally get while shopping. I've been to many stores including franchised locations and they always seem to be an uncomfortable experience. Most employees never bother to acknowledge you let alone show a sense of urgency when it comes to helping with any inquiry you may have. Not the case with Mark and Jessica at viking hobby. Once you enter you are instantly greeted with a friendly smile and you know you are welcome. They share a plethora of knowledge and and give sound advice on purchases even if it is to another store. If you ever have problems finding something they can generally get it or give a good reason as to why it may be unattainable. The gaming selection is good for people whom enjoy casual gaming along with a great selection of models and war miniatures . Don't let the store size fool you, just the customer service alone makes it a giant in the gaming community in my opinion. read more

Just a point: there is ONE DP spot on property, and the owner came out & told us we couldn't park there (yes, we had a placard) unless we were patronizing the business. Notice to Business: it is against CA DP DMV rules & regulations to DENY use of a DP zone whether private property or not. We could've made a stink about & I could've showed my law enforcement retirement badge, but we didn't need to come back and have a flat tire or paint keyed. Right? I would never patronize a business that denies access to a legally displaying DP vehicle. Know the law, lady. read more

I spend so much money here. And I'm not going to stop! They have most things, and they can order everything. They are knowledgeable, helpful, and best of all, enthusiastic about the products they sell. Seriously. Go in and tell them what types of games you like. There is little I can add from the first reviewer's post. I've been purchasing from Jessica since 1986. I have never found another shop that has made me feel more welcome than Viking Hobby. Viking is the quintessential game/model store. Jessica is the jewel in the crown. Every other shop in the area could take lessons from her on customer service. Viking Hobby inspired me to open my own store and learn the ins and outs of the gaming retail industry. Even though I own my own shop, and I can get anything I want at wholesale cost, I buy my personal games and accessories from Jessica and Viking Hobby...always. I never want to see this shop close. Small but densely stocked this is an old style, full service hobby shop. Carries plastic kits and war gaming supplies, as well as an outstanding selection of paints. What really sets Viking apart is the truly wonderful and friendly customer service. I've never experienced anything less than a warm greeting and the staff are truly knowledgeable and helpful. As an example, one time I got some paints and accidentally picked out a gloss bottle when I wanted flat. The clerk noticed the pattern of what I was buying and asked if that is what I wanted, saving me money and time. I drive down from Grass Valley just to go here - over 100 miles round trip - and it's worth it! read more

These guys are part of a dying breed: little brick and mortar shops with friendly, knowledgeable staffs. The first time I was recommended was when I was in junior high, and here I am at thirty, still lauding them. The store itself is really cramped, which is what adds a kind of magic to it, and the crew is really friendly - I doubt R/C Country would basically offer a tab to a customer (speaks to how much I would go in). Really good selection of Tamiya, Hasegawa, Dragon, Italeri, GHQ, resin, and assorted chemicals - all in all, Viking is an awesome shop that has a good selection with excellent customer service. read more

I called to find out if they had any models or toys for my cousins, ages 6 and 9, as I wanted to get something different than the usual toys r us garbage. He said they had some snap models that would be just right. I drove over there and he helped me pick them out. Great selection, but what I like best is their customer service. They're willing to do special orders and if they're out of stock, they actually WILL call you when the product is in. How many other businesses have you run into that will do that? Prices for board games are MSRP - 10%. add tax to it and you're still under MSRP. Can you find them cheaper online? Sure. I have been a customer of Viking Hobby since 1998. Mark and Jessica have always been delightful and very supportive of a dopey young teenager hanging around their store when I was in Middle School and High School. The store is small and older, but it is ran with love for the community and hobby. The real tragedy for Viking, in my opinion, is the glut of indie publishers at the turn of the Millennium which bogged the store down with tons of old stock that makes it difficult for them to invest in many of the newer game lines. I can't say I blame them - they are first and foremost a model-driven and historical-wargame business, and it must be difficult to turnover 20 years of old d20 product and books from the boom of desktop publishing era of the 1990's. I drop by from time-to-time to check on the store, but sadly I can't give them my money more often since I no longer compulsively purchase a wide range of game lines and they haven't kept up with the Star Wars RPG from Fantasy Flight Games. However, they have a great selection of model parts, kits, board games, miniatures, and more. That said, they are a real treat to spend an hour or two with and will happily help you find the perfect board game, model, or other item for that special someone in your life. There aren't many old "hole in the wall", home town "Mom and Pop" stores left - especially when it comes to game, card, and hobby shops. Went here on a sunday when most other hobby shops are closed. They had a decent supply of model stuff, some cars and ships and planes etc. I found bare metal foil and glue and paint. They have lots of testors bottle brush paints to choose from and some spray cans. If you need supplies on a sunday ....they are open. Lady was friendly and helpful. read more

I recently got the idea in my head that I'm going to paint my miniatures for Pathfinder. I accidentally stumbled on this place and I am so glad I did.
