the entrance to a restaurant

Had to come and viet this place to see if it was legit. There was an old Vietnamese man smoking a cigarette outside so we were pretty sure it was going to bistro good and we were right! I used to go to Huong Tram/Nam Son all the time when I lived here and I love The Breakfast Den but it's so great that there's a traditional Vietnamese place in Grad Hospital again! I recognized one of the waiters from Huong Tram I think and my friend recognized another from another closed Viet restaurant at 11th and Washington so it's so nice to see familiar faces again! Food: Egg rolls (cha gio)- usually call these spring rolls but either way they're delicious, fried and stuffed with pork. Spring rolls- usually call these summer rolls but, again, so delicious we forgot to take a pic. Shrimp and pork Pho Tai- we ordered Tai Nam but they brought the wrong one. Either way, good amount of meat, good broth (not as amazing as Washington Ave, but still good). Banh mi- ordered the BBQ pork and they brought out the wrong one, but brought out this one when we told them- toasty fresh bread, delicious meat, watch out for the jalapenos! Lemongrass beef bun (vermicelli)- great flavor beef and sauce Good size portions, great price, delicious food, quick service, and BYOB! Just double check when you order and get your food that you got the right thing. Hoping all the people who learned to love fusion Viet food from TBD migrate over here and support Viet Bistro too!

This food is legit! My friend is Vietnamese and they eat all these foods all day. I was so excited when she said that she knew it was good as soon as she all the proper aromas filled the room and welcomed her into space. Yay! I ordered all my favorites spicy shrimp, beef pho, short ribs, and the fresh veggies for the pho. The shrimp is addictive and flavorful. The noodles were perfect and not mushy. It was so cold and rainy evening, so a warm tea and hot bowl of soup was just what we needed!

Soooo... I was looking for a new place to eat lunch today so I thought this would be a good option. I ordered BBQ Pork Banh Mi and Chicken Wings. I was so excited to try this new place so I walked to the store, after paying for my order online+tip, only to find out that they were closed. There was no sign on the door and the phone numbers on the menu that was in the window were not working. So much for trying something new! Needless to say I did not try anything new from Veit Bistro. So... I walked back around the corner a next day and, to my surprise, they were open for business. The person that I spoke to( possibly a manager) provided no explanation of why they weren't open when my order was placed, but was willing to make my order. I explained that I would not be able to have the order made that day. He took my information and we agreed on a day and time for my order. When I called in, there was a little bit of confusion surrounding my order and my previous communication had not been shared so after showing proof of my order and re-explaining the situation, my order was made. The person that was at the counter was pleasant and provided updates on my order without prompting. The FOOD.... As I stated in my earlier review this was my first time trying Banh Mi. It was so GOOD and fresh. I also ordered Chicken Wings(Canh Ga). They were crunchy and flavorful without being too salty. I would recommend and order again. The menu notates that this is a BYOB but this is does not seem like typos of place one would come for a dinner and bring wine. It has a "hole in the wall" type of aesthetic.

Wings and fried wontons

Almost a year later, I can't believe it's been so long! Me and husband were out playing Pokemon Go today and it was chilly so a warm bowl of cozy Pho sounded like a great idea. We decided to stop in and order to-go this time: chicken pho for me, veggie pho for husband, and we also threw on some fried wontons and chicken wings just to try something new. It was ready in about 10-15 minutes just as quoted. Got it home and unpacked and everything looked and smelled so good! We focused on the wontons and wings primarily and had a little pho tonight, figuring we'd have plenty for leftovers tomorrow. It was a good plan! The wings are really crispy and I like the light sauce that comes with them (or maybe it came with the wontons, not sure). The wontons were crispy too -- these are a meat-filled wonton and there was a good amount of stuffing inside! The pho was everything we remembered it being and really hit the spot. The chicken for the pho was a little bland (basically just some sliced cooked chicken breast, not even sure if it was seasoned at all) and I think since we ordered such meaty apps, veggie pho would have been just fine. Overall another solid experience. I'm really not sure why this place gets such mixed reviews!

Shrimp pho - no noodle (veggie)

To start the service was a bit weird. When I walked in, the workers were eating and no one really asked what I wanted. When I went to the counter they told me someone would come out shortly. I decided to sit down, as soon as I did a man from the counter waved at me to walk back.. mind you I'm dining in and i had a stroller. I went up to notice his nose was runny and he had no mask on. Still I was craving pho and noticed he wasn't actually making my food so I let it pass. You also have a visual of the kitchen. AFTER I finish eating I look up to notice the cook TASTING the food he was making with the SAME spoon he was mixing the food with. I don't know if that was his own food he was making, none the less a VERY weird habit to have working in a kitchen. The food- I ordered shrimp pho no noodle just veggies and shrimp summer rolls. The summer roll is rate 6/10 The pho id rate 6/10

I got take out. The food was really great. The tofu hoagie and tofu summer rolls were perfect. I will definitely be going here regularly.

BBQ Pork Banh Mi

Very homey and tasty food. They do a 4% charge on credit card. Their Banh Mi are delicious - toasty warm bread and fresh garnishes. Pho is a little light on the meat but everything tastes like it's made the day of.

Plate full of noodles, very little chicken.
Jonathan C.

Disappointed with how little chicken they gave me. All I wanted was grilled chicken, they gave me full plate of noodles and less than a handful of tiny thin pieces of chicken. $13, deserves more chicken. Also the spring rolls had the tiniest piece of pork I've ever seen. I'm talking super razor thin. They mostly just have me noodles.

Vegetarian Pho

I was so excited to see a new Vietnamese place near my work. I've already ordered a couple of times since they've opened and it's been great. The people are so nice. The food is fresh and delicious with lots of vegetarian options. Can't wait to go back again.

Solid mom and pops place. Authentic food and good prices. Service isn't the best but you don't eat Vietnamese food expecting good service.

This place was packed, which is always a good sign, and even with that the staff stayed super prompt and professional. The house special was my favorite. I got it with the knife-cut noodles and it was perfect with the broth. The noodles had that slightly uneven, chewy texture that really holds onto the soup. I never thought I'd be the type to talk about "mouthfeel" but here we are. The broth itself was rich and savory with a deep beef flavor, a little bit of oil on top that adds body without feeling too heavy. It's that classic, comforting Chinese beef noodle soup done really well. I added a braised egg, which had great flavor soaked into it, though it was served cold, which threw me off a bit. The mapo tofu with noodles was also really solid. It had that signature spicy, numbing kick from the Sichuan peppercorns, balanced with a savory, slightly salty sauce. The tofu was soft and silky, and mixing it with the noodles made it extra satisfying. It's got some heat but not overwhelming, just enough to keep you going back for another bite. The shrimp stir fry was lighter but still flavorful. The shrimp were cooked well, tender with a slight snap, and the sauce leaned more on the savory side with a mild sweetness. It felt like a nice balance alongside the heavier noodle dishes. Couple practical things: it's cash only, but there's an ATM right by the seating area which makes it easy. And the portions are generous for the price, so it feels like a really good deal. Overall, super satisfying spot. Busy, a little chaotic, but the food absolutely delivers. Definitely a go-to if you're craving hand-pulled noodles.

The homemade DanDan noodles were our favorite, which are served with ground pork in a spicy peanut sauce. We also got the three cup chicken which was so good, with a sweet, licorice-like glaze. We had the ginger and scallion dish and was not our favorite, as the chicken had a unique consistency and was quite limp. Overall, good service and a relaxing ambiance in a bustling city.

The food is consistently strong, and the signature dan dan noodles are a must-order. We also tend to get the chicken potstickers, scallion pancake, kung pao chicken, and dry pot beef, along with white rice for the table. It's a menu that rewards repeat visits. We've had both takeout and dine-in here, and we definitely prefer dining in. The food is at its best when it comes straight out of the kitchen. The staff is always friendly, helpful, and kind without being overbearing. For seating, we prefer the cozy but small upstairs dining area, so making a reservation on OpenTable is usually a good idea. There are a few high-top tables downstairs near the kitchen and windows, which are also great, but if you prefer a quieter or cozier spot, we think the upstairs is best. They also offer a happy hour with good prices, and overall, the value for the food quality is excellent. We often bring out-of-town guests, and it's always a hit. Sichuan cuisine remains distinct from typical American Chinese, which helps Dan Dan stand out. We've also noticed their Ardmore location, which appears to be a strong alternative. Consistently good, well-run, unique, and worth visiting, especially for the dan dan noodles. Highly recommended and hope to be back soon!

Chengdu Famous Food has created the right balance of cuisine authenticity, hole-in-wall-ness, and hipster vibe... all undeliberately. An absolute gem. Service was friendly. Can see this place being overrun during peak hours, as it was already a bit busy even at 5pm midweek. Lots of takeout business too but fortunately there are seatings available for 20-25 diners. The shop is in a nice area of the revitalized Powelton/Drexel/University City area across from a few new developments with reasonable street parking in the area. Absolutely a go-to if in the area, and may be worth driving a bit to if in the Greater Philly region.

I ordered my usual ramen and two sushi rolls to split with my partner, and ordered through here on yelp through DoorDash. Because of a system issue, my food was ordered twice (after paying it said there was a system error and it couldn't be completed and my cart was still full and after it happened twice I figured something was really wrong.) I had a sense something was weird, and had my partner call ahead to assure there was only ONE order, and otherwise cancel the second immediately, which he did. When I got there there were 2 orders, and the restaurant smilingly said it was already made and wanted to give me both bags. They REFUSED to cancel an order or to talk to DoorDash directly. I insisted on calling DoorDash in the store to make sure I got a refund because I couldn't afford to pay double for my food and risk it (what would be $84 for one bowl of soup and two sushi rolls.) After 45 minutes on the phone, and now cold soup and warm sushi to bring home, I was assured I would get my money back in "a few days." It has now been two months and I have not received a refund. I have been going here for years, and very upset on this lack of oversight on the restaurants part. I think they mostly interact with college students that are passive and they can manipulate. The restaurant said it was my fault because I used the ordering service they provided through yelp like I should have known better not to use it (and again, I've ordered online here many times!) They made my favorite ramen, but the countless hours I have now spent on very expensive cold soup and warm sushi-- I will not return until this is rectified. Other comparable restaurants that make ramen in other areas of the city of the same size will send me a full refund for a drink just for sending me the wrong flavor! it's so loud in the restaurant to even have a conversation or be on the phone to communicate when the issue happened (again college scene and club music.)
