OK, so we were going to another restaurant, but due to the inclement weather in North Carolina our first choice was closed. Not sad for us at all, let's start with the silverware... details already get your mind prepared that it is about to be blown. Our waitress was, Ki, and she was excellent and informative. We are not too familiar with Indian food, so her explanation of the dishes really helped us to have an incredible meal. So, a round of applause for the SPICY PAPI, do you see the all caps? It is the best drank I never knew I needed! I only ordered 2 because I had to walk to my next venue- lol. London Mixed Grill and Garlic Naan enough for the two of us. Last, but not least the only two desserts (unfortunately for us) on the menu... yummy! This place has a down home feel with exotic food that sticks to your ribs. LOVE the quality of food here! Service is extremely careful to those with food allergies and sensitivities! Have no fear, they will take care of you here. Very few obstacles for having a stellar experience. Ambiance is quite dark and comfortable. Nice to not have to deal with overly obnoxious florescent lighting, for those of us who have worked or work in hospital conditions. This may not be the best place to take pictures in the evening since it is quite dim. Food is rich yet not overwhelming! Their spinach felt as if it was melting in my mouth and surprising not bitter! I was pleased with their alternative to using butter (ghee is typical in Indian cuisine) and their use of vegetable oil!! Very sophisticated presentation of food in beautiful porcelain and silver dishware. Huge fan of their pairing with the light and fluffy rice along side the hearty dish. I commend the level of service that I was able to experience. They helped to assure me I wouldn't have to run out of the car to get my EPI-pen in the case that I might be close to dying! "Indian/ pub combination in downtown Durham" Came here finally for lunch with a friend today, interested to try Indian food in downtown Durham at last. I ordered a "mix" thali mix plate (one veggie option/ one meat option) with an okra dish, a chicken vindaloo, fried vegetable pakora, small mixed vegetable dish, rice, naan, and a dessert (they were out of raita, so it was a sweet carrot dish instead). I also got a "beetroot lassi" to drink. My friend got the veggie thali combo (same as mine but with a lentil dish rather than chicken). Positives: + Quality. Wow, we were both blown away. Every part of every dish was absolutely delicious. The vindaloo was pretty spicy but extremely flavorful. The okra less spicy but also quite tasty. All sides were excellent, even the naan bread. + Friendliness. Both the entryway hostess and our server were quite friendly and helpful. + Speed. Food came out super-fast... within a few minutes of ordering. Negatives: (these were all minor) - Quantity for price. Despite all the parts to the thali listed, it was not a very large lunch. Given it cost around $13 before tax and tip (not including the lassi), I would've liked just a bit more food. If you're not a big eater, it's a "fine" amount, but definitely not enough to share. - Seating. The seat was hard and very "upright"... I would've liked to be able to lean back slightly and maybe have some cushioning. Probably set up in that regard more pub-like than restaurant-like. - Dark. The place was rather dark for lunch. I imagine it must be really dark when people come after sunset. - Beetroot lassi. Not very sweet and really did taste like beets (which I guess shouldn't be a surprise). I wouldn't get this again. Not sure what I expected, but it wasn't that good, yet it cost $4. They offer their meals in different heats. We ordered everything medium because my wife is not a fan of the hot. The server brought out a couple of option in cups I could stir in to raise the heat level of mine. They were good, but never raised to the level of pain fuel hot "to me". You milage will vary. The important message is they will work with you on getting it right. Interior is nice, no strip mall feeling at all. (partially because it is not in a strip mall). Service was well attentive, and quick. Floor manager checked with us as we left if we were satisfied. We chatted with the table next to ours, an equally inquisitive couple.. atmosphere seemed very welcoming. It is premium priced, but I would say value is representative to the price. I can't recommend The Viceroy enough!! My relatives and I split three dishes as well as vegetable samosas and naan. Everything was phenomenal. The moderate spice level was just the right amount for us and the curries were rich and flavorful, especially the red Thai seafood dish. The rice on the side was also fluffy and well-cooked. We visited Viceroy for some late night snacks. We had just left Pour and needed a bite to eat. Alan and I munched on poutine fries, jeera chicken wings and Shepard's pie. Loved the food. The only thing I could say is that when asked how hot, I said "Indian Hot". That was Soo hot! Take it from me, don't do that... The service was excellent . We ended up at this place after trying a couple other places and could not get in. The staff were very kind and sat us at a table even though we were there 15 minutes before close. I'm a novice when it comes to Indian food and don't do well with spice but the waitress suggested a couple of dishes. My husband got the poutine and I got the spinach and lentils. The poutine was different than a traditional poutine and had ground meat with peas and he said it was good. The spinach and lentils was good and definitely not spicy like I wanted. The menu was a little bit on the short side and lacked variety. The lighting was very dim, and the poor elderly man at the next table had to use a flash light to read the menu... good thing he came prepared! On an important note, the service was wonderful. The food came out very quickly, and most of us were satisfied with our orders (aside from the veggie saag). The chicken wings were also a little on the dry side. I recommend the red Thai curry dish or the tikka masala here with a spiciness level of "2." I underestimated the spice and got a level "3." Whoops! I went to the Viceroy for dinner a few weekends ago and it was absolutely fantastic. We had made a reservation and were seated right away (I would highly recommend doing this if you're eating later on a Friday or Saturday night). Our waitress was super friendly and knowledgeable and recommended we try the paneer and murg mykanwala, which was phenomenal! We also ordered the off menu puff pastries, jeera wings, garlic naan, and I got their off menu limeaid drink. Everything was great and I'm still thinking of the paneer mykanwala weeks later. The atmosphere was relaxed but nice -- you could wear casual clothes or dress up to go out. The seating area is a bit smaller so the tables are closer together, but they did a good job of balancing being close to other tables but still feeling like you had your own "bubble." I ate here for a small business dinner. We shared some appetizers - a fried cauliflower dish that was quite flavorful, and a roasted sweet potato and black bean dish that was fine but unmemorable. I ordered the London Mixed Grill as my main, which as I now look back at the menu to refresh myself, was apparently supposed to have five different proteins. I could (of course) tell the lamb and shrimp apart from the chicken, but I don't recall there being three different types/flavors of chicken. All the chicken that I remembered eating just tasted of grilled chicken, with minimal hint of spice. The onions that came on the plate were still raw and to me, unpalatable. While the decor of the place was great, the ambiance was lacking. It was so loud that I had to strain to hear the person sitting next to me, even when the two tables closest to us were empty. All in all, I was glad that I tried this trendy British/Indian place, but with so much great food in downtown Durham, and so much tasty Indian food elsewhere in the Triangle, I don't feel the need to return. read more

I absolutely love Viceroy - it is one of my go to restaurants when I get a rare night out. I was thrilled to dine there last night and, as usual, everything was fabulous! I tried their new seasonal cocktail, which was made with fresh watermelon and tequila and it was delicious. I ordered my regular, Murg Mykanwala with chicken, medium spice. We also had their naan. When my companion asked for extra rice, I was shocked and disappointed to hear that they now charge $4 for additional rice. Their entree to rice ratio has always been slightly off, so we often order extra to even it out (and we eat every bite!). So, the food and service was outstanding, as always, but being charged for extra rice after spending almost $100 on dinner and cocktails was really discouraging and I hope the restaurant will reconsider this new policy or else start serving enough rice to accompany their delicious meals. read more

COVID Outdoor Dining Review Viceroy has outdoor seating on the street on Friday & Saturday nights, we were so happy to learn they are being safe and still providing service! They don't take reservations but there weren't many people sitting outside (it's starting to get cold of course now that it's November) We ordered way too much food but we were so excited to try out all the items and we got to take enough home for dinner the next day. For starters, we got the Gobi Sukka, which was perfectly textured inside and out. The curry leaves are usually serves as a garnish but these were crispy and flavorful. The Momo Bhel was AWESOME, probably my favorite item of the night. Crispy fried momos topped with a spicy tangy sauce, peppers and onions and a twist on traditional bhel sprinkled on top. For dinner we got the London Mixed Grill - the shrimp and the lamb chops were bomb! Also got the Jeera wings which sadly didn't live up to expectations. Most of the food here had fresh clean flavors but this one was a bit confusing and muddled. This one is a pass for next time. Also tried the Chicken Korma which we loved as well. I know this is British Indian cuisine and this is the reason why I wanted to try this spot! Curry houses are known for their rich creamy curries in the UK and I loved this twist on traditional korma which is rich and creamy in it's right but not smooth like this dish was. Try the Cadbury Kheer for dessert! I don't think I've ever had chocolate kheer (rice pudding for the uninitiated) but it was genius. I don't think I ever want regular kheer again after trying this. read more

Well, downtown Durham has another amazing restaurant. I went to Viceroy on it's opening night with my husband and fellow Yelper Anthony. Other than the questionable nod to colonization in the name and decor, everything was outstanding. The have really transformed the space from the Beyu Caffe that it used to be-- it definitely sticks with the theme even in the small details and has a very nostalgic vibe to it. There's lots of space and I appreciated that the tables weren't totally crammed in next to each other like at some restaurants. The service was also excellent. Our waiter was fantastic, the manager came over to speak to us (and remembered us from a previous restaurant), and the chef also came out to speak to us. The food also came out very quickly. Onto the food because it gets even better. All of the dishes were amazing-- flavorful and when we asked for spicy we got SPICE (so be warned). I got the daal which was full of flavor; my husband got the shepherds pie which had a great mix of creamy potatoes and meat & veggies, and Anthony got the bhaji with chaat which was probably my favorite of the night. All of the meals were extremely filling (and Anthony's was actually a starter but enough for a meal if you aren't super hungry). We stuck with the cheaper end of the menu ($13, and the bhaji was only $9) and everything is under $20-- so you are getting an amazing meal at a very reasonable price. Oh, and the garlic naan-- don't skip the garlic naan. Downtown Durham already has a lot of great dining options, but I am really glad that we have an ethnic food option now. There aren't a lot of great Indian places in Durham so definitely check this place out! read more

Really flavorful and spicy Indian food, HOWEVER it is way too salty for my taste! We had made a reservation on a Friday night and were seated right away when we got there. The ambiance is great, their decor is really off the charts, and our waitress was super nice as well! For a table of 4 we ordered 2 appetizers - sausage rolls and goat somosas. They come with 2 of each thing per order, so it was a great way to split it for 4 people since they could be easily divided. The sausage rolls were very crispy and appropriately teased the palate. The sausage rolls themselves were full of flavor and covered in a melt in your mouth pastry crust. It also came with a salad with a mayo type sauce which I felt did not need to be included, perhaps they had to add more to the plate so that they could charge $9 for 2 rolls of sausage covered in pastry? We also ordered 4 entrees - Green Curry, Paneer Mykanwala, Lamb Durban, and Sarson Ka Saag. This was a lot of food for 4 people definitely and we all left very full! The green curry was delicious and really refreshing. The paneer mykanwala was very rich between the curry sauce and the fattyness of the paneer, but this was perfect for a cold winter night. The lamb durban was good, could have used more pieces of lambs - but honestly compared to the previous 2 other entress really did not hold the candle. The Sarsaon ka saag was forgetful as well, it's good but then again not as rich or flavorful as the first 2 entrees we had. Overall, I would come here again but be prepared to bring the salty entrees home with me and eat with my own rice! read more

Had the pleasure of trying out this pleasant little restaurant at the behest of a close friend. From the outside it has a very warm, London tavern kind of vibe, which makes it even more shocking the quality of the Indian food that comes from the kitchen!! I was advised, by BOTH our terrific (and pleasantly quirky) server Kai and my friend that I must try the London mixed grill. We also had the gobi sukkah and samosa for apps, and my friend the paneer mykanwala for her main. This has to have been one, if not THE most delightful dining experiences I've had in the Triangle area. From the food, to the atmosphere, to the overly accommodating staff. My partner and I were celebrating our anniversary and had previously heard great things about this restaurant. We had reservations and were seated quickly. The restaurant had a beautiful ambient interior which was both classy but comfortable. My partner had the bourbon specialty cocktail and I had the watermelon margarita, both of which were phenomenal. When ordering our food, our waitress was knowledgable in helping us pick the right spice levels based on our preferred spice tolerance which was medium high. We ordered the Szechuan paneer, Thai chili naan, London mixed grill, and palak daal with shrimp. Everything was delicious with the perfect seasoning and most importantly spice. Our server was spot on with our spice levels!! The owner was very welcoming and checked in on our table with surprise Pani puri shots. My family brought me here while I was visiting from Dallas. Most people say Dallas has amazing Indian food, but Viceroy was beyond anything Ive tasted in Dallas out of the ballpark. This little gem is located in the heart of Durham and is a serious must visit! Initial reaction: Walked in and was immediately greeted by smiling faces. We had reservations and were promptly seated. The restaurant was clean and food smelled amazing. Overall great ambiance. I let my family take the lead in ordering the food and in my excitement to eat the food, I did not get pictures of anything except the dessert :/. I had a glass of Malbec that was just what I needed after a day traveling. For apps we had some bhaji chaat that was fantastic. It was the perfect portion and well balanced flavors. Of course, you can't go to a British Indian fusion joint and not try a vegetarian pasty! Seriously though, TRY IT! it was not super oily like a lot of pastys (pasties?) Ive had in the past. Perfect flaky crust and again well seasoned filling. The Red Thai Paneer was delicious. Tender paneer with a great balance of asian spice flavors with a hint of the coconut adding some sweetness. The veggies and paneer were perfectly grilled and not overly charred. Garlic naan was fresh and delicious, great to eat alone or with any of the entrees. Coming to the entrees... from a vegetarian standpoint, I highly recommend the Panch-Ratna Daal and Paneer Mykanwala. Both were seriously delicious without being overly heavy or doused with cream. The dessert special for the day was Cadbury Shahi Tukra and it was absolute deliciousness. I loved that it was not overly sweet. I am a huge coffee and chocolate lover and this just hit the spot. Viceroy was an enjoyable experience from every aspect. Having been to pubs in London, I really appreciated how authentic the decor was: I felt like i was in a genuine pub - dim lights, buzzing crowd and random wall art. Granted, if you're a party of 2, you might get seated in a communal dining table. Some people like it, some don't - I personally hate that idea and was glad I was with a party of 4 and got an individual table. The food was amazing, everything was very flavorful and the dishes were complex and not at all basic; something I've come to appreciate from restaurants serving popular cuisines. I had the fried cauliflower appetizer and seafood curry, 10/10. The waitress was incredibly friendly and despite being lost in conversation, I did notice that the meal did take some time to come out but the appetizers arrived instantly.
