This is absolutely some of the best Indian food in durham. Everything from the drinks to the appetizers and entree was delicious. Highly recommend the cauliflower as well as the tamarind drinks- they are truly unique in flavor but so delicious! Will definitely be back

Viceroy is an absolute gem for Indian cuisine in Durham! There's a lot of competition for the best Indian restaurant in this city, but for me, Viceroy wins time and time again hands down. The decor is simple but effective, imagine a British-style pub with plenty of wooden accents but with an Indian flair. The space is comfy and approachable without doing too much. What I also enjoy about Viceroy is the service. Quick and efficient, you never have to wait too long for your meal. Plus the servers are all extremely friendly and make you feel right at home. Now on to the food! When I say that Viceroy has some of the BEST Indian food I have EVER enjoyed, it's not an understatement. I'm originally from NYC and have been spoiled by amazing Indian food, and Viceroy can hold their own with any NYC restaurant. Everything is DELICIOUS but the standouts for me are: The Naan, both the plain and garlic varieties, are incredibly tasty, soft, and fluffy The Mykanwala curry is so rich and flavorful in a well-spiced, creamy tomato and onion sauce- I always get mine medium spicy with chicken! The Curried Shepherds Pie is the kind of dish you don't expect to find on an Indian menu that delivers a delicious punch of flavor. It's what you would expect from a shepherd's pie but with the unexpected twist of Indian flavors and spices- a must try! The Smoked Daal Bukhara is also another standout curry dish with lucious smoked black lentils in a flavorful sauce that you can choose your favorite protein to accompany. This dish has a very unique taste that is sure to please Besides the amazing food dishes, the cocktails here should also not be missed! My favorite drink on the menu is the Kali Mirch, an amazing concoction of black pepper infused vodka, fresh strawberry syrup garnished with a lemon salt rim- SO GOOD. And lastly, if the warm butter toffee cake is on the menu just get it. Honestly, there are few words to describe how amazing this cake is, the perfect amount of sweetness and served warm.

This is the kind of place where you'd want reservations on the busier nights, but I managed to grab bar seating. The vibe was modern, and the menu offered options that were recognizable, yet distinctive. Notably, ordering some dumplings served in Indo-Chinese style with tangy sauce and fried noodles was a good way to pass the time until my entree arrived, and I was pleased to have gotten a ginger-based non-alcoholic beverage. The main course was a lentil curry which looked a lot like the butter-based Dal Makhani one often finds but was in fact stewed in coconut and was vegan as well as having a rich mix of smoky, spicy flavors. I will say that it was a noisy place and the bathroom was a bit of a mess, but the food is most of what I rate and it lived up to expectations.

In a landscape full of good Indian food, Viceroy steps up to the challenge of elevating a meal to a truly exceptional experience. Everything from the elegant decor to knowledgeable servers added to the experience before the food even came to the table; and when it did, I was pleasantly surprised by both familiar and new flavors, all exceptional. I especially enjoyed the vegetarian kofta with fig - and those who know me would know that a vegetarian item hardly ever receives such high praise from my carnivorous palate. I would absolutely come back just to have that single curry again. It's not just curries either - their small plates and tandoor items all go above and beyond, demonstrating the true breadth of their culinary capabilities. This is a must try for anyone looking for an Indian spot that goes above and beyond.

Even though I don't eat hot food, the presentation was wonderful. We were treated well. We were the minority in the restaurant and we didn't feel that not once.

The vibe here is trendy but still comfy as a pub. The food arrived quickly and full of flavor. There wasn't a single miss from drinks to appetizers to main course!

Viceroy is one of the Durham restaurants I will come back to without fail whenever I visit after living in the area for four years! Highly recommend a reservation in advance - the place is always packed and for good reason: top quality Indian food with the unique colonial era influence reflected in both the menu choices and interior design. After multiple visits across the years, my family's favorites are the palak chaat, hariyali chicken, smoked daal, and garlic naan. Don't miss out on this one while in Durham!! Pro tip: park in the lot behind the restaurant!

Incredible food! Service was good, but I would recommend a reservation for dinner. (We sat at a communal table because we didn't have one.)

Finally tried out Viceroy after multiple recommendations. I got a few appetizers to try and while they were definitely tasty, they came out extremely fast and were a little cold. The samosa I thought were average and you can find it just as good at any Indian restaurant. The main stars of the show is definitely their grilled meats and curries. I highly recommend getting a mix of the meats to try. They are a tad on the salty side, but very flavorful, juicy, and well cooked. Restaurant is of course very well decorated and gives an English curry house vibe. Service was good. Definitely a great date night spot at least just to try!

Low quality pic but high quality food haha; plates were demolished :)

My favorite spot to get Indian food in Durham! Love the aesthetic, upscale ambiance. The food is also authentic & tasty; portions are a bit on the smaller side compared to prices, but I suppose that's expected given the fancy nature of the restaurant. We tried the London Mixed Grill (Hariyala + Angara kebabs, golden chicken, lamb chop, & masala shrimp sizzling with onions and rice), Paneer Mykanwala, Chicken Vindaloo (both of which are tomato & onion based stews- Mykanwala is creamier though), and garlic naan; enjoyed all of these. I also got the Mango Lassi, which was classic. Service was good; we came with a large group (~15 people and the reservation process was straightforward). 9/10 would recommend!

The food was incredible! And when they say their spicy is spicy, believe them! Everything was delicious. The service was wonderful, they definitely all work as a team here. We had no shortage of attentive staff! The vibe is definitely more Saturday night out than quiet evening dinner. There is fun music to dance in your seat to while you enjoy their amazing food! We'll definitely be back.

Does this restaurant have outdoor seating?

When I was there last time (two months ago), they had like three seating spaces outdoor-- may have changed bc weather!

What dishes are Vegan on your menu?

They have several vegan dishes--I haven't exhausted them all, and I've been three times. They're marked on the menu. The cauliflower, the fruit pooris, some curries, etc are all fantastic.

I took off early and came here early on a Wednesday night with my aunt (we were going to try another restaurant on Tobacco Road later that evening for dinner.) This is a very definite speakeasy vibe here...the art deco decor is amazing. My eyes were thrilled before we even sat down. We had our pick of places since we got there right as they opened. Our waitress came over and was so pleasant and extremely knowledgeable. I cannot wait to bring my uncle back to enjoy some new bourbons. I started with a Wake Up Holland and my aunt had a chocolate martini (not on the menu but the bartender understood the assignment!) Wake Up Holland is 100% worth the hype. I LOVED IT. But since I was worried about the caffiene, I tried The Smoking Jacket next. It wasn't really my favorite...it tasted like a campfire which I know some people enjoy but it wasn't my jam. The waitress was very astute and mentioned that they could make the Wake Up Holland in decaf and I rejoiced!!! And ended the evening with that. The service, ambiance, and drinks were all stellar and I cannot wait to return to this establishment!

We made a reservation for a Saturday night dinner and he made sure we were well taken care of all night. The latter two drinks were mocktails and they were still standouts! As for the food, the Alley burger was perfectly cooked: juicy patty paired with truffle cheese and simple toppings that really highlighted the burger itself. And shoestring fries are always a good choice with a delicious burger. Ricotta gnocchi was also very good. As our server Anthony said, let's get this burger nominated!

I go here to celebrate milestones with a good friend and we always have a mini feast, paired with a glass or two of wine. My favorite time to go is when the weather is comfortable and we can sit in the alley way, it's soooo chic that it feels like you're sitting outdoors at a meal in Italy of France. Service is always on point and I forget the bartenders name that is super knowledgeable and super kind. When I remember, I'll circle back to update this review. The wine list is broad and thoughtfully curated, with options that feel approachable whether you're a casual wine drinker or someone looking to try something new. The space itself is adorable, with eclectic décor and cozy lighting that makes it easy to settle in and stay awhile. It's a great spot for conversation and a relaxed evening with friends. The only downside is that the space is fairly small, and I would have loved to see one or two more lower seating options for small groups rather than mostly high tops. That board was so good--I can't stop thinking about it. The toasted baguette slices with truffle salami and mustard? Unreal. It was the perfect little snack to share. We also had the citrus lavender crème brûlée, which was surprisingly delicious. I don't usually go for crème brûlée, but this one was light, not overly sweet, and just had a really nice flavor. I've also tried their shepherd's pie before and loved it--wish it was still on the menu! The vibe inside is moody and cozy, and they've got a cute outdoor patio too. Overall, such a great spot. And, it truly lived up to the hype. One of the best we've ever had! I also tried two other cocktails made with their house-distilled rum and gin, and both were delicious and perfectly balanced. The seasonal menu is creative and reasonably priced, we were genuinely impressed. The ambiance is charming and cozy despite a bit warm inside (the AC was pretty weak), but quiet and tastefully decorated with velvet couches, exposed walls, vintage touches, and fresh flowers on each table. We had fun flipping through their amazing cocktail book collection on the shelf too.
