I didn't do any research on this campground before going as this was a last minute trip however I…read morewish now I would have. This campground was probably very nice back in the day however now not so much. The only enjoyment we had was at the creek that runs beside the camping spots. The very first thing we saw was a burned out camper, we were told the upper campground was full that had full hookups we rode up to check it out and it was scary. Run down permanent campers with sketchy people hanging around and trash everywhere. We were unable to sit outside because of a horrible smell that we never figured out where it was coming from. We ended up leaving early. The camping office where you check in smelled awful like 40 cats lived in there and peed on the carpet. We walked up and looked in the showers it was also a scary place doors are rotten and dirty inside. I usually don't leave bad reviews because business owners have a hard time with covid but this was going on long before Covid. If I could rate this as 0 star I would

The pool & water slide have been neglected sitting unused for many years & a haunting reminder of better days. It's creepy, run down, a lawsuit waiting to happen & either needs an overhaul or they need to close. The upper campground looks like it's mostly full timers & getting a rig up there would be a challenge to say the least. The ones that are occupied have stuff piled up outside it & that's also where you find the cabins but considering the state of disrepair the rest of the place is in I'd be worried about falling through the floor. There's an old abandoned camper that's obviously been neglected from the 60's & I didn't even want to know what was waiting on the other side of the bathroom door up there. The lower campground was close to deserted complete with a old van & hippie, a pop-up camper with tent & another pop-up camper with a tarp over it. The only way to distinguish between the overgrown grass & the campsites are the pole with a number on it. If you have more than 2 people you have to put picnic tables together & the fire rings are car rims without the tire. The shower house is cinder block tombs with rotting bedroom doors & the bathroom is several porta potties sitting around. In the back part of the lower campground there was an old building half enclosed/half open & stuff piled up around it. The only good thing about here is the waterfall.

The web site was not updated from 2021 each time I accessed it in the past 6 months so I could not use it to obtain a reservation. It told me to call 'the station' number provided. I did this monthly and was assured that the web site would open in October sometime. Today, 8 October, I called the station again and they said that I must obtain reservations through the web site. Guess what? The website now says that all RV sites are taken. I've wasted a bunch of time on this.

I have been coming consistently for over 10 years to This campground for Merlefest. I am aware of some that had items taken in 2017. I do know that fire dept was very concerned about this. A vehicle that was stolen came into the campground (not a camper) and took some items. But I feel this could have happened at any campground. Overall I would say this campground is very safe. As for jamming after the shows, and during I am surprised at the comment of few pickers. I heard music everywhere and am a musician myself. Many people gather in the barn (normally used for the fire trucks) to pick. But there were many groups around the open field around the campfires. Wood for campfires is provided for free. There is a quiet camping area on the hill where music is not played at night. Perhaps this is why it seemed there were few pickers. You can view many jam sessions that took place at night in the barn on the U Tube channel. The campground also has food venders and sells it's own shirts, hats, etc. Several of the partnership and breakdown volunteers camp here because it is one of the very few (if indeed there are any others) campgrounds were visitors can come early few days before fest and stay a few days after.

I have read some of the other reviews and I hate to see people have had anything less than a fantastic experience. I want to emphasize that we have never felt anything less than welcomed at this location. My son doesn't open up to people very often, but he always readily signs up for anything offered because he loves it. I am very particular about who my child is around and associates with, so I understand that some people may have concerns, but I follow recommend the Wilkes Family YMCA for all activities!

On top of that, there were honestly times where we felt creeped out by some of the gym-goers who would intently stare and watch you in the work out room. At first I put it off thinking "oh I or whoever looks familiar", but it got weirder as time went on and the same 5 regulars stared me down and honestly made me just never want to bother going there to workout. The janitor, I do not know her name and it's not like she'd tell you, was beyond rude telling us to "hurry the hell up" in the changing rooms 10 minutes before closing of the pool room, not the gym, when we already were leaving! Then as we pass her walking out she cusses us under her breath. Come to find out she's had multiple complaints and was never fired or even scolded, that I would guess. The daycare staff allegedly led someone's kid barefoot out of the classroom, through the halls, and into a public restroom, which is very unsanitary for a 3 year old. There was also a shooting there recently, which doesn't factor into the review, but was my ultimate decision to stop my membership. When I attempted to cancel the membership, it had already charged me and I was told I would receive a refund since the payments are delayed on my bank so I assumed it was still ok. I called back a week later saying I had not received a refund and would like to know if I was ever going to get it back, they told me no and that "they typically don't do that" which implies they can; however, they insisted I could not have a refund even after I explained my situation which is honestly ridiculous. It's not the staff's fault in that case, it's the policy, and the lady I spoke to was very kind about it, but it doesn't change the fact that I should have received a refund since my payments are typically random and I basically called the day I was charged asking to cancel the membership and request a refund. All in all, aside from these reasons, the only redeeming factor is the pool. Also do be aware that if you have children, men in the men's locker room ARE NOT changing in the adult section, they will walk around bare butt booty naked everything hanging out in the under 18 section in-front of other's kids and that is flat out disgusting like c'mon. Very nice weight lifting section and courtroom, the back workout room kinda sucks as there's not really more than one set of weights and 1 machine of every type which makes it difficult especially on busier nights. If you want a gym, do not go to the Wilkes YMCA, just do a local gym instead or go to planet fitness, it's going to be cheaper, better, and have more equipment. $30 a month for somewhere this poor is absolutely not worth it when its that uncomfortable to go.

The food was the most surprising part about the stay. It was well prepared, served buffet style and basically all you can eat. We had a date night where they set individual tables and served a five course meal. Salad, salmon, asparagus, linguine and berry tart. They served each course to our table, meanwhile camp staff were watching our rug rats. (They will not watch rug rats under 2 years old) The high ropes course was a good family bonding experience. The course is set up to be as challenging as you want. The grand finale is a double zip line. It was open for us from 2 PM to 4:15 along with climbing wall and you could go as many times as you wanted. The marina on Lake Broyhill had a fire ring, canoes, kayaks, sailing boats and a pontoon boat. The lake is textured enough to provide a long afternoon of paddling and support sunfish / bass. Bring your fishing pole to access lake from shore or on a boat. Lack of fishing pressure should ensure a good time. There are a couple of creeks thg that the kids can explore with frogs and interesting rocks. They are small enough to be safe, but big enough to support creatures. The camp is 2k+ acres and adjoins a wildlife preserve. This provides seclusion and provides wildlife viewing opportunities. The cabins were great...for kids. The mattresses were uncomfortable for adults, but no complaints from the kids. That may have been due to the multiple activities they experienced during the day encouraged on by an enthusiastic camp staff. Besides the bread and butter summer camps, they do retreats for different groups that can be tailored to their needs. Scout campouts, corporate retreats, special needs retreats, family reunions and weekend campouts are all on the menu. Cellphone service is marginal, but they have wifi throughout the cabin and dining hall.

Whenever you put together mass amounts of women in a defined space, this have the potential of getting a wee bit crazy. Some of my fave activities... -Morning yoga -Zip line, Jacob's Ladder & climbing wall -Hiking the trail to the gorgeous overlook (yes, it's worth it) -Friendly dude ranch with precious horses -Zumba (praying there are no cameras filming my athletically induced dance moves) The camp is only 1.5 hours from Charlotte and it's a great getaway for ladies, families and kids. You'll find tranquil campgrounds complete with teepees, plenty of activities, pool, lakes, nicely appointed cabins with private bathrooms & shower stalls and a stunning view. The staff are incredibly sweetl and the food is spot on. If you're considering a weekend trip to the mountains, a corporate retreat or a camp for your kiddos, definitely check out Camp Harrison!
