As far as rest areas go, this one has plenty of parking spaces and is clean. It's a little odd because the entrance to it is from the left lane, and the exit merges into the number one lane (the passing lane).

Fairly clean rest stop. My main concern with this location is that upon leaving to get back on the interstate, the driver must enter into the left passing lane. This seems a legit safety hazard, but I have seen more states are doing this as a cost saving approach.

This left-exit rest area is in the center median of I-77, about 50 miles north of Charlotte. The one rest area services both northbound and southbound traffic. There is no road access between the two, so no worries about getting lost! Considering that it gets twice the traffic of regular rest areas that only support one direction, this is in great condition. I found the rest rooms to be clean, the grounds free of trash and the vending machines well stocked. There is no shade here if you were thinking of taking a little siesta. A good place to stop if traveling Interstate 77. According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation website there are nine welcome centers and over 50 rest areas throughout the state. You can download a list from their website and get a lot of good information detailing their locations. The purpose of the rest area is just that, to get a break from the drive, use the restroom, and possibly get a snack. Per their website, "Loitering, camping, soliciting, consuming alcoholic beverages and staying overnight are prohibited. North Carolina's Rest Areas." This one is located between the northbound and the southbound traffic. There seems to be plenty of parking and, thanks to its location, it is easy to access. The building and area look brand new. The building has a large open lobby with some very pretty terrazzo designs on the floor and on the wall. The bathrooms were very clean and it was a nice place to stop. There was a very distinctive "farm" smell on the day that I visited. Overall, it was a nice place for a break and I will stop there again if I am passing through and want to stretch my legs or refresh myself on the drive. Enjoy.

New and Clean This has been going on for over a year now. I-77 is Iredell County is one of the few places in the United States were there are two set of rest areas in the same county. There is a set both North Bound and South Bound just south of the Yadkin County line. About 30 miles further South just North of Mooresville, there is another set, again one North Bound and one South Bound. I particularly like the pair just north on Mooresville because of the openness and the one on the South Bound side has a nice view of the Davidson Creek Channel. Very nice especially in the fall at sunset with the foliage and the setting sun. Problem is most of these facilities are built away from municipal areas and over time, the exceed the capacity of the leech fields and become both difficult and expensive to maintain. Expensive also because these are four different facilities to maintain. Over the past few years since I started working in Statesville, I hate to think of the number of times these places have been closed for maintenance. Solution the DOT came up with and it is similar to what you see in Florida is to build one large facility in the area between the North and South Bound lanes. They picked a spot South of Harmony and North of Mooresville or in other words, between the two older sets of rest areas. New facility is spartan with little more than restrooms and vending machines but plenty of room to walk you dog or have a picnic. For the truck drives, plenty of room to park their rigs for a break. Well lit and easy access both North and South so we shall see. Have not seen the upper location lately but they have removed the building at the lower two and are re configuring the terrain back to a more natural feel.
