A very nice rest area along the I-85 corridor. North Carolina has several welcome centers and rest areas along the I-85 corridor. This particular one is located at mm 99 in Thomasville, NC. It looked like a very well-maintained facility. The grounds seemed well maintained and the brick buildings looked very clean. There is plenty of parking with truck and trailer parking to the left as you exit the interstate and cars to the right. The car parking is around the onsite structures in a semi-circle making it easy access for everyone. There are 2 buildings. One for restrooms and the other for vending. The restrooms seemed clean and well-kept with an informational sign and map along the wall. I thought that the best features of this rest area were its well landscaped surroundings. It had shaded picnic tables and green spaces making it a very nice spot for stretching your legs, enjoying a snack, or simply taking a break. I did not realize until doing this review that there is a pathway to a memorial between the northbound the southbound stops that I will have to check out next time. Overall, this is a pleasant stop if you are travelling along i-85.

Being born and raised in nearby High Point and having lived in High Point for the first 18 years of my life, it took me almost 40 years until I finally visited this North Carolina Rest Area on I-85 in Thomasville, Davidson County; well, at least that I can remember. It's completely possible that I stopped here in my pre-Yelp days (before 2009) or as a child/minor and just forgot. I stopped going northbound, while on my way to Chapel Hill from Atlanta. There's a southbound stop too. In between the northbound and southbound stops is the North Carolina Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park. That makes this rest area unique. From the northbound rest area, you have to walk through a wooded path and over a bridge above Hamby Creek to get to the park. You can actually drive up to the park from the southbound rest area. It has a parking lot that's accessible via the southbound rest area only. The park is a simple, circular park featuring a long wall with veterans' names etched in brick. To learn more about the NC Vietnam Veterans Memorial, visit its Yelp page here: https://www.yelp.com/biz/vietnam-memorial-thomasville. According to the NCDOT website, this rest area opened in 1982 and was renovated in 2011. It has parking spaces for 56 cars, 6 car-trailers, and 19 trucks. This rest area definitely has that old-school aesthetic. During my visit to the northbound stop, the buildings and grounds were clean. There were two buildings, one with restrooms and one with vending machines. There was a variety of seating, inside and out including picnic tables, places to walk dogs, and separate trash and recycling bins (multiple). The northbound rest area was moderately busy on a Tuesday around 4pm. A woman was approaching people in the parking lot asking for help. She told me she was trying to get to Carolina Beach and needed gas money. I saw one guy repark his BMW SUV, around the curve, closer to the main walkway between the buildings, and he took his laptop bag with him to the restroom, presumably because of that woman.

The door is not a door. It's a jar.

If Duchovny, Beckham, Navarro, and Jones come to visit you, it's time to get your Davids on. I recently spent the night here and I really appreciated how safe and secure I felt. The only problem with the rest area is probably that there are not any services for proper eating or gas, but other than that this is definitely one of the better rest stops that I've been too. They even have a really nice poignant Memorial to Vietnam.

Finally passing through here with a few minutes of extra time. As well, it was a bright sunny day (maybe too sunny for driving) so I stopped here to give my eyes a break, look at some greenery and pop over to see what the North Carolina Vietnam Veterans Memorial looked like. A short walk down a tree lined lane, over a single lane bridge and up a short hill (the sign says 900 feet, but it seemed longer) and I found it. A large circle with a grassy area. Along the wall at the back, the names of those from North Carolina who gave their lives. Quite peaceful and with the wing blowing, the POW-MIA flag flying below the Stars and Stripes. I'm glad I stopped, especially with Memorial Day coming up.

Love how north and south do the whole diverging diamond thing here so you exit the highway on the right side of the road but end up in the median at a rest stop that shares the memorial with traffic going the other way. Getting back on I-85 provides an opportunity to merge poorly by not using the acceleration lane to match speed before entering the traffic flow inducing snarls and congestion that never quite dissipate entirely. yea!! The actual SB rest area is nicely managed with vending in one building and facilities in another plus picnic tables and shelters all over the grounds. Good car parking is available on both sides as the lot wraps around the buildings, that being said truck parking is displaced somewhat and suffers slightly. But perhaps the increased separation from car traffic helps with extended periods of resting?? Not sure if it's a good idea but there's a lot of nature to explore just a little ways off the beaten path and seeing as it's between the roadways a person shouldn't get dangerously lost.

Your standard clean, useful rest stop, which is much appreciated by travelers. What sets this one apart is the nearby North Carolina Vietnam Veterans Memorial, which is accessed by a short path off the north end of the rest stop.

    Nice little picnic area

AnotheR good rest stop in NC. I feel like I am usually scared to get out of the car at rest areas, but this one was nice and no qualms here. The bathrooms and very clean and vending machines well stocked. Make sure you have coins or cash though because they don't take cards.

Nice rest area in a wooded parklike environment. Highly recommend you walk the few hundred feet into the woods to see the North Carolina Vietnam Veterans Memorial, it is a pleasant tranquil place, a great respite and a nice excuse for a walj in the woods where there is a nice brodge over a small stream. In general NC rest areas are nice and generally much cleaner than those in most other states.

I had a bottle of hand sanitizer in the passenger door trough and it had tipped over and drained into the door. The smell was making me sick but a quick pick up Into a small trash bag and wiping with paper towels fixed the problem. This looks like a nice stop if we needed to stretch our legs or use the restroom but we hadn't traveled far enough for that kind of use.

Reviewed 1 year ago with this...A nice place to stop for a break when traveling south on I-95…read moreAccording to the North Carolina Department of Transportation website there are nine welcome centers and over 50 rest areas throughout the state. You can download a list from their website and get a lot of good information detailing their locations. The purpose of the rest area is just that, to get a break from the drive, use the restroom, and possibly get a snack. Per their website, "Loitering, camping, soliciting, consuming alcoholic beverages and staying overnight are prohibited. North Carolina's Rest Areas." This one is off the right (west) side of the interstate when traveling south on I-95. The truck parking is closest to the road and the car parking is farthest from the road. There are two car lots and plenty of parking. The building and area look brand new. There are two single-story buildings separated by a covered walkway. One is the welcome center and the other is the restrooms. The restroom building has an open lobby with some very pretty terrazzo designs on the floor. The bathrooms were very clean and it was a nice place to stop. Overall, it was a nice place for a break and I will stop there again if I am passing through and want to stretch my legs or refresh myself on the drive. Enjoy. Added one picture to Google
