I have a Yorkshire Terrier with extreme subluxation of both of her knees and an ACL tear, because of the subluxation. I went in for a consultation with Vet Surg and Doctor Webb, who was very frank about the procedure. She didn't "sugar coat" the difficulty of the procedure or the recovery process. I was very worried about the entire process. The surgery went very, very well, and my dog has recovered almost 100% since the surgery (which was only 9 weeks ago). Initially I had a great experience... but that was 2 weeks ago... and now everything is different. My Corgi has a dislocated ankle, and I had just recently adopted him. Mind you, I haven't had a dog in 3 years, but that shouldn't matter. I have been proactive to get my pet the medical attention he needs. I only adopted him 8/15. Dr. Webb told me two weeks ago that my dog needed a fusion, that's the only option we were given, and we just needed to get him healed. He's an energetic pup, 11 mos old, and the Trazadone they'd been giving him seems to have amped him up. He got a splint and we were told to bring him back in a week. They gave me other medication to help to actually sedate him, and we were off. Unfortunately, his splint was dirty when we brought him in last week, as he had been active... and the front and back yard is dirt... so not surprising. We have been doing our best to keep him calm, but had not always been easy. Dr. Webb called me to tell me that our dog's splint was disgusting, and that we would have to take a step back on whether we would be having the surgery. I was surprised. I said that he had stepped in the pee, and I knew it was dirty, but it wasn't wet or anything. She was adamant that we needed to take a step back, and said that if we weren't diligent, he would need an amputation, if things weren't taken care of after the surgery. I mentioned that my husband had said "There's not much we can do to harm when it's been a month and a half since it was injured, before we got him" and so he had been more lax than I would have liked, and she said "Well, if your husband isn't on board, we should really take a step back." I never said he wasn't on board... he just wasn't as concerned about creating more harm... we just wanted to insure he was healing, which he has done beautifully! I have been really upset about this, and so when we visited today, I let the tech know that I'd like to talk to Dr. Webb, as she simply spoke to me on the phone last week. He called me later to tell me she would call me later, and that we would schedule the surgery in 2 weeks. Healing nicely, he said. The Dr. eventually did call, and all I can say is "No Bedside Manner"... It started off cordial, and then went into discussion of my discomfort with the direction of her pulling back, and with her pointedly saying it was because of the ONE dirty splint. She later added on "this isn't the first time..." which, in fact it was... we have only seen them for 2 weeks, and that "from what the staff tells me he has not been properly crated and he's been left to run around at home... I asked her where she got that information from, as she hadn't asked me anything, and that isn't what had transpired over the last week... She then said "perhaps we aren't the right place for you and your dog". That they were only interested in what's best for my dog. I was shocked. She was basing her decisions on one dirty splint, and hearsay... and my expressing concern about her pulling back, and not wanting to do his surgery... If you want to work with someone who will communicate with you, get the facts, and be a partner with you in planning your success, then don't use VetSurg. I felt set up for failure, and when I tried to explain that I had been working to get a cart for him to insure his success, she had mentioned that that was great, but that she would never have suggested it because it was too expensive. You think $8500 for surgery isn't expensive? Carts are offered for loan, so WHY NOT tell someone...? I had planned for his success, knowing he was an 11 month old pup... Why wouldn't she have...? The BEST TPLO surgeon and experience we could have asked for. We've been through 3 TPLO surgeries, between two dogs, and Dr. Holsworth and his team made this last one above and beyond compared to the others. Things we loved: Dr. Holsworth did the initial exam with us in the room and talked through everything. He's a leading expert with tons of experience (even helped create the current, improved TPLO hardware) with this procedure and pain control. The staff was SO friendly and helpful, both at appointments and by phone and email when we had questions. Our dog was allowed to roam a bit with her 5-10 minute "potty breaks," which helped in so many ways. The added drive was so worth it, compared to driving in LA traffic and parking in noisy neighborhoods, which only made our dog more anxious last time around. We had 24/7 text support with a surgeon in case of emergencies or important questions. Best of all, since recovering, our senior girl (11 at the time of surgery) has seemed easily 2 years younger as far as her physical fitness and vigor. My dog, Charley, an American Staffordshire Terrier mix had torn both of his ACL's back in the spring of 2022. He couldn't go for long walks anymore without limping. I was worried about his condition, being only 5 years old at the time. As a resident of Santa Barbara, I knew the vet bill would not be cheap. I was recommended Advanced Veterinary Specialist (AVS) being told they were the best. They did an initial evaluation on his condition which cost me over $600 just to look at him! They then quoted me $8,000 to perform the TPLO surgery just for one knee. Sharon Shields at AVS told me that doing one knee at a time was her preference over both knees at once because it was too "hard" on the dog. The next knee surgery would have cost me an additional $5,000! This was WAY out of my budget and felt they were price gouging me. I proceeded to look elsewhere and found VetSurg in Ventura. Courtney Campbell did the initial evaluation and explained Charley was young enough to have both knees done at the same time. I was apprehensive after what Sharon Shields told me at AVS, but Dr. Campbell assured me that it was not uncommon for him to perform double TPLO surgery on most dogs. The upside was the cost was much lower AND it meant Charley would only have ONE surgery and ONE recovery. I went with his suggestion and with a price quote of $9,000. This was much more affordable. I decided to go ahead with some worry on my end. It has now been over 7 months since Charley's surgery and I am AMAZED at how well he has been doing. Charley no longer limps after long walks and appears to have a lot more energy and seems happy. He even has a bounce in his hind legs which he never had before. He is happy and healthy and had no complications after surgery! I am thoroughly pleased with Dr. Campbell's expertise, as well as the staff at VetSurg. The best experience, frankly. We took our cat here for gland removal surgery. Had been a chronic issue for the poor kitty most of her life. We met with Dr. Campbell for my American Bulldogs spindle cell tumor on her ribs. He has a great bedside manner [covid protocol, we spoke on the phone while my dog was inside the hospital]. He mentioned how much the stuff was enjoying my gentle giant of a dog [and her pearl collar], which I always love hearing! He recommended a CT scan and biopsy for a definitive diagnosis, which I agreed with 100% - I believe it took about 3 weeks to get in for this procedure. He called me 6 days after her procedure with results, which unfortunately found additional cancer in her heart and pancreas. Dr. Campbell was very empathetic and thorough on the phone. I greatly appreciate his time and expertise! My only complaint would be when we picked her up from her procedure she was covered in her own urine [I'm a veterinary technician at a small general practice] so I'm sure she urinated in her kennel and laid in it. But a quick wipe down would have been appreciated so she didn't soak my car in urine and smell so strongly for the 1 1/2 hour drive back home. We had previously met with Dr. Holsworth about 2 years before for her arthritis and he was also amazing, knowledgable and very thorough in her exam and diagnosed her with sciatica, which had gone undiagnosed until his exam. He prescribed a new medication for her which has helped her move around so much more comfortably that the average person would never know she has arthritis, sciatica and a bad back. I really can't comment on the quality of the surgery. Our dog seems to be fine after his TPLO surgery a year ago. There was very little communication with the surgeon so we just have to trust that it was good. The bad thing is our dog now hates being in the car for rides longer than 10 minutes. He pants like crazy for fear of going back to the vet. This never happened till taking him to this vet. I told them I wanted to be able to bring him home after the surgery so he wouldn't have to be in a kennel but they wouldn't allow it. I get the reasons why but I now have a dog who is fiercely afraid of going to the vet again. It's a shame that vets do not have more empathy for this kind of thing. They also prescribed way too much medication which I am positive had a negative impact on my dog's behavior. He has nowhere near the energy he had before the surgery. read more

Beware of Dr. Campbell! Ask questions and seek a second option. I took my dog there due to a lameness in his back knee. Dr. Campbell, without X-rays, decided he needed TPLO in BOTH knees, a $10,000 procedure requiring plates and screws. The other knee was not bothering him! They needed to keep him for two nights at $450/night. $450 in a kennel?! With much support staff pressure, I scheduled the surgery and was going to get another opinion. They told me if I cancelled the surgery date after three days, they would charge me $500. I cancelled right then and called all my friends for a recommendation. They sent me to VMSG. I went down the road to See Dr. Simpson. She highly recommended one knee at a time IF he needed anything. The other knee was fine. Dr. Simpson took X-rays and couldn't be sure. When she went in, his ACL was intact. It was a side ligament. He got an MPL, aka no plates or screws. She let me take him home that night and i just monitored his pain. It was easy. It was also just less than $4000. She actually refunded $ when they didn't need to do things. We are ten months out and we are doing well. Get a second opinion! Our four year old golden retriever recently developed a small lump on her leg. After inconclusive results from a fine needle aspiration, our normal vet told us it needed to be removed but was in a tricky spot, so we should go to a board-certified surgeon to ensure we got good margins. If I could give them more than five stars, I would. The vets (and techs) are skilled and experienced. Dr. Holsworth won't recommend surgery without really ensuring the best chance for success and the best for your pet. He did an emergency surgery to remove my beloved Jesse's gallbladder. Jesse is almost 13 years old, has a heart arrhythmia, slightly enlarged heart and slightly diseased mitral valve, so there were many issues to prepare for. Dr. Holsworth also was surprised by a pericardial hernia (hole in the diaphragm just below the heart) when he opened Jesse up for surgery. There were other complications, but Dr. Holsworth and his team brought Jesse through it. I hope you've read through all of this because you also need to know that the entire staff is kind, compassionate and accessible! I cannot recommend them highly enough! read more

Pet owner/lover BEWARE! This is the most non-caring vet we have ever encountered. Our Great Dane had knee surgery there. The plate that they implanted was not sterilized and carried an infection that resulted in 3 more surgeries to remove, and countless trips to the vet. Worst of all, he was unable to walk for almost 6 months. VetSurg declined any responsibility, even when we showed them the lab culture results of the plate that they implanted. Dr. Campbell saved our Gracie's life!! Our poor girl was super sick for over a week and we did not know why until we got her to our regular vet and saw her x-rays! Gracie had gotten a hold of a needle and thread that our daughter unfortunately left laying around and decided to eat it. The needle broke in two, one half was found in her asophagus and the other punctured into her lung. The thread had cut through her intestine as well. Needless to say she needed emergency surgery! Horizon vet hospital was unable to do the extensive surgery to remove needles and repair her lung and intestine. They brought in Dr. Campbell from VetSurg to perform the 3-4 hour surgery. After X-Rays, numerous medications and no improvement, they referred us to Dr. Holsworth at VetSurg. He carefully examined Aiden, his symptoms and X-Rays and explained the potential causes. Dr. Holsworth then had us undertake a regimen of medications and gradual exercise, monitoring Aiden each step of the way. Over the course of 3 months, the transformation we saw was nothing short of miraculous. Not only has Aiden stopped limping, he's acting like he's a puppy again despite being 10 years old. Dr. Ian Holsworth is the most skilled, professional, caring vet I have ever met. Our little rescue dog, Mz Abby, is five years old with very long legs for a bichon frise. Mz Abby had luxating patella and if she'd continued walking without surgery, her ligaments would have eventually ruptured. She was walking with prolonged abnormal hindlimb movement, leading with her right leg and dragging her left leg until her kneecaps re-situated themselves and was, as Dr. Holsworth said, "stoic." Letting my dog sit with a broken leg for 3 weeks was not an option, so I asked the emergency vet facility that treated Vinny (in Ventura) if they could recommend any surgeons and they said they worked with Dr. Holsworth at VetSurg. I was not crazy about driving Vinny to Ventura for surgery, but was desperate and called on a Monday to see how soon they could see him. I was thrilled that they were able to see him on that Wednesday. Not finding an available surgeon in LA, turned out to to be the best thing that happened to my dog. Not only is Dr. Holsworth an extraordinary surgeon, but his entire operation runs like a well oiled machine - with a lot of compassion and detail given to the treatment and care of your pet. Everyone on the staff was so nice and the Office Administrator, Kim, was on top of her game and always made me feel good when I knew I'd have to leave Vinny there. Vinny's surgery was a success and he is on the last phase of his rehab program provided by Dr. Holsworth. You cannot tell by looking at him that his leg was completely broken in April.
