She was once a handicap puppy and after the surgeries, Bo turned into a jumping bean! I am glad to report that my Labradoodle puppy who is 80 pounds now, is still jumping up and down before dinner approx 5-6 feet and pulls like a husky in winter on every walk, she climbs ladders and trees and even jumped off our 2nd story house patio at age 3 (All ok!, her nick name "Bo-Jelly"). My yorkie, Scruffy, was diagnosed, at about 8 months old, with a genetic disease called Legg Perthes syndrome. As a result, he needed operations on both hips. Before the surgeries, my dog's entire hind quarters were atrophed to 1/2 the normal size and he could NOT put any weight down on his legs. He was like a tripod dog - 2 strong front legs and 2 hind legs working as 1, but barely. He urinated in hand stand positions - which sounds so funny if it hadn't been so painful for the little dude. I was skeptical about having both hips operated on but I also did not want to put the dog down. So, Dr. Thomas performed the surgeries. I could go into a lot of detail about Dr. Thomas's personality traits here but none of that really matters to me. At the end of the day, what matters is that Dr. Thomas actually performed 2 successful surgeries on my pup and today you would NEVER know the dog even had surgeries. Dr. Thomas promised that eventually the dog would build muscles over the hip joints and the movement would return to normal. I was SO skeptical and it took a while but eventually Scruffy healed perfectly. Dr. Thomas came through for us! Dr. Thomas is quick and sometimes you DO feel rushed in his office, but he gets the job done effectively. He is confident with the animals and a competent surgeon! If you are looking for a soft touch and gentle words, this is not your vet. If you are looking for a "get to the point" type vet, and a highly skilled surgeon, go see Dr Thomas. I wholeheartedly recommend that all of you take your animals to Dr. Samuel A. Thomas, DVM. Dr. Thomas has been my veterinarian for over ten (10) years. At one point, he was caring for my six animals. I had three cats; two Siamese, and one Himalayan. I also had two Australian Shepherds, and one Chihuahua dog. Presently, I have one Siamese cat, going on twenty three (23) years, and one Chihuahua dog, going on fourteen (14) years; left living from the original six animals. I mentioned these animals, and attribute their longevity of life to Dr. Thomas's excellent veterinarian care. Dr. Thomas is a very knowledgeable and experienced veterinarian. He has been practicing veterinarian medicine for around thirty (30) years. He cares for animals, big and small; from giant St. Bernards/Great Danes to kittens, rabbits, and even Koi fish. Dr. Thomas also goes out of the office to provide veterinarian service with a smile. I witnessed Dr. Thomas giving curbside service to a St. Bernard, who refused to enter the building. Dr. Thomas was very happy to provide vaccination shots for the waiting St. Bernard. Dr. Thomas provides veterinary care that is comprehensive and reasonable. He performs only necessary tests, procedures, and a care program for you animal, that gets to the crux of the animal's situation. He is realistic and reasonable in his care of the animals and his rates. Many consumers cannot afford to spend thousands of dollars to pay other veterinarians to care for one animal. Dr. Thomas does not oversell his services, his care, or his medications. He does not sell you unnecessary tests, unnecessary procedures, and does not prescribe any unnecessary medications. He does investigate each animal's condition, and after his physical exam of the animal, he then moves on to determine, if this animal's medical condition, require additional investigation. He may recommend blood tests, urine tests, stool tests, procedures. Last August '2018; my last veterinarian medical emergency was for my Chihuahua, "Chloe". She had been bitten by a coyote on her chest. He took us in right away, assessed the situation, and performed the necessary steps to getting Chloe back on the road to a healthy recovery. He neither overdid it, nor underdid it, in regards to what was medically necessary to save Chloe. He simply did what was necessary, and he charged ma a reasonable rate. I had previously gone to Dr. Samuel A. Thomas's Dad, Dr. Samuel E. Thomas's, veterinarian office in the San Fernando Valley. Both Dr. Thomas and his Dad are/were kind, caring, and knowledgeable veterinarians. I now travel from Tarzana to Camarillo to seek Dr. Thomas's veterinarian care for my animals. I last visted Dr. Thomas this July 2019. Next to me was another customer, with four dogs, who also had traveled from Encino to Camarillo to seek Dr. Thomas's veterinarian care. Additionally, law enforcement trusts Dr. Thomas's veterinarian expertise. The Oxnard Police Department Canine Unit bring their German Shepherds in to him for their medical care. Dr. Thomas is always booked, his waiting room is always filled, with many, many people and many, many animal customers who trust Dr. Thomas to provide the best veterinarian care, and for his reasonable rates. read more

My daughter just took our 2 year old rat to see Dr. Thomas. She had tumors and was going to need to be put to sleep. He was the worst vet!! He handled the rat Inhumanely and just left the room without saying anything or allowing her time to say goodbye to the rat. He was rushed and did not care about her feelings towards the rat... The only reason we went to him was because we knew the rat needed to be put to sleep because she was in pain and could not move but the way Dr. Thomas treated the rat and my daugher I will not being going back again...I would rather pay a full exam fee at my regular vet then allow him to touch another animal from my home. By the way, eight years ago he treated my cat...misdiagnosed him for over a week and put him on various pills. Needless to say he died under my bed the next week due to Pancreatic disease. After reading the other reviews on YELP and seeing a fairly high rating I thought I had picked a good vet to take my cat to. I should have been clued in when I made the appointment over the phone that I was in for the worst customer service and professional experience I could even imagine. I was curtly cut off when explaining my cat's problem that they would see me next week- *click*. Upon arrival I was seen to quickly and within five minutes my cat was aggressively held down and had blood drawn without so much as a greeting or attempt to calm her down. She went into traumatic shock and was unable to move her neck for three days due to how Dr. Samuel Thomas and his assistant had handled her. After speaking to other vets in the area that confirmed that Dr. Thomas has received other complaints and my cat should not have had that reaction if appropriately handled. While I was there Dr. Thomas asked me where I lived and pulled another patient's file and told me that she was my neighbor. They told me where she worked, her exact apartment number and that her check bounced and they were reporting her to the police. I explained that I did not know my neighbor and this was not my business. After questioning me further they finished up and let me leave. When I had to return to pick up her medications I explained that I did not feel comfortable returning Pet Headquarters because I felt his practice was unethical and unprofessional due to him sharing confidential patient information with me. The vet assistant left the room at this moment and Dr. Thomas proceeded to ask what was said. After explaining what he shared with me he said he was questioning me because everyone knows their neighbor and when I did not he thought it was suspicious and said he thought I was going to scam him out of money. I explained he does not know anything about me, or how long I have lived in the complex. I also explained that the neighboring apartment is not numerically ordered and the location of the disclosed apartment was beneath me which I had never had contact with. I explained I felt it was inappropriate to share that information and I would be going elsewhere. He responded that he has been doing this for a long time and is not concerned with building up his practice, he stated "There are plenty of vets in Camarillo and you leaving is your prerogative not mine." In addition to this horrible experience they never brought up concern about her kidney, phosphorus, chloride levels and presence of an infection from her blood panel and by the time I took her to another vet she passed away within 48 hours since her disease had progressed. I am filing a complaint with the Veterinary Medical Board of California as well as reporting this issue to the Santa Barbara Ventura Veterinary Medical Association. I hope you learn from my experience and find your furry family members the best care possible. The low cost, in my opinion, was not even close to worth it. read more

My family have been clients of doctor Thomas' for YEARS! We even took animals to his father (who is a great doctor) before he had his own practice. A couple years ago, my mother and I had a cat and kitten that had skin issues. The mother was very tiny, and instead of using his judgment by giving her a smaller dose of medicine, he gave her a full amount. Two days later, she died of kidney failure. Since then, my mother and I have not taken our pets to him, but my grandmother and aunt remained loyal customers- even close "friends". This year, my grandmothers dog has been sick. He wrote it off as pancreatic issues without doing X-rays or anything. This morning, the dog went lifeless. We tried getting hold of dr Thomas, but the office Is closed every wed. We called his house phone because they have been considered family friends for quite some time, he answered the phone and said "I am not in the office, stop calling". So, we took the dog to another vet. the doctor found a grapefruit size tumor attached to the dogs spleen. He said if it was caught in time, we could have done surgery. But at this stage, there was no hope, so we had to put her down. On two separate occasions, he has shown his carelessness. I don't believe his heart is in his practice. I would not recommend his as your vet. read more

I switched from my closest vet to Dr. Thomas on recommendation from good friends. What a great find. This guy is a real gem. He has been caring for my current Black Lab (6 years old) ever since he was a pup. Today I took him in for "kennel cough." Dr Thomas and an assistant examined him and did not recommend treatment as the dog was too healthy and active to "load up on antibiotics. It should clear itchel on a couple of weeks or bring him back." NOTE: My friend's elderly dog needed a significant surgical procedure and Dr. Thomas was 1/3 the price of our local vet. read more

I recently took my puppy (2 month old maltipoo) to get checked because it had diarrhea which is not good for the size and age of my puppy. I was beyond concerned. I took him with the hopes of curing my puppy or giving me advice on what I can possibly give him. He sucked, worst vet ever. He seemed like he didn't care one bit and told me he would be fine. Next day I wake up and my puppy is bleeding while going potty... I called beyond upset and they didn't even try to accommodate me or my pet most importantly. This vet doesn't seem to care for the animals. He wants money. I don't care to support a local veterinarian if he doesn't even seem to be concerned for our animals. Yeah maybe he is not too expensive but what is the point if our pets are not well taken care of? Do not waste your time or money!!!! read more

My 17 year old Chihuahua is a patient of Dr. Thomas. This Dr. knows what he is doing. I have been to his clinic many times and he has diagnosed and treated my dog efficiently and the dog was better in a short time. His fees are very reasonable he does not gouge you with unneeded test and xrays. He gets you in and out fast. He performed oral surgery on my dog and I was worried because of my dogs age, but everything went well. If you are looking for a warm and fuzzy guy he is not for you, but he kind of grows on you. I would NOT recommend Dr. Thomas. I took my cat in because he'd lost weight, an awful smell was coming out of his bum & he needed a vaccination shot. He dismissed me when I said he'd lost weight too fast & told me he didn't see anything that concerned him & gave him the vaccination. He spent all of three minutes with my cat and moved along. My cat had a cancer tumor protruding through the skin in the same area where the shot was given. I don't know how he missed the cancer protruding through the skin (the size of a golf ball) except to say that he moves too quickly and doesn't take enough time with your pet! My cat was in so much pain he would not let me pet or exam his hind quarters. He would only let me touch his head. When we see the vet or the groomer, he lets them do anything because he so scared. This happened three weeks ago. The cancer spread quickly and I had to put him down. We are all grateful not to be spending unnecessary money for tests that don't need to be run, but in this case he should have taken more time to examine him thoroughly. read more

I was going to a different vet in Camarillo for over 25 years. My dog has been having skin problems for the last 5 years of her life, she was miserable. I cant even begin to tell you all the money i have spent at the other vet on ridiculous test, pills, creams, shot etc. None of it has worked like he said it would, but we kept going back and he kept charging us SOOOO much. I finally decided to take her to Dr.Thomas. He basically diagnosed her on the spot, gave her a shot and pills and she has been much better ever since. One of the BIGGEST things i love is Dr.Thomas is literally 10 times cheaper than the other vet and a much better vet. You can tell hes not just trying to take your money and do ridiculous tests to make money. He makes the right diagnosis so you don't have to keep coming back and over and over and breaking your bank. On average, we would spend 30 to 50 bucks at Dr. Thomas's, and that's with visit, medicine, and shots etc. No joke, at the other vet, we were spending on average 100-300 a visit, it was insane! I do feel a little rushed sometimes, but its not that bad at all. He gets to the point and he's still really really nice. I like how down to earth he is and straight forward, its refreshing! If you are looking for a good vet that's probably the cheapest in camarillo, I'd definitely recommend Dr.Thomas! read more

I went to Dr. Thomas because he had walk in hours on Saturday and my regular vet didn't. I wish I would have looked into other vets open on weekends as this turned into a nightmare. Dr. Thomas and his assistant came into the room and asked what was wrong. We explained that our dog had scratched all the hair off his eyelid and his lashes were gone. Dr. Thomas ASSUMED that the dog had scratched his cornea and tested his eye for that. He prescribed 2 medicines and sent us on our way. He did not mention bringing him in for a recheck or anything we should be watching for. Our dog did not get better and I decided to call and see if the doctor wanted to see him for a recheck. I was told by the front office that he was out of the office and would not return until Thursday and they were booked. We could walk in on Saturday. That was too long. I ended up calling our regular vet and she saw him that day. She looked at the eye and then proceeded to take out a foxtail under his eyelid. It was bloody. I felt so bad that my dog had suffered with that thing in his eye. Those foxtails are nasty with those little barbs. I called Dr. Thomas's office on Thursday to talk to him as I was very disappointed in the care given. The lady who answered asked for my name and phone number and asked me what the problem was. I told her and she replied that Dr. Thomas would NOT return my call. I asked, are you kidding me? I then told her to relay to the doctor that I was very disappointed in his lack of care and that my dog had already suffered 4 days due to that lack of. I also said how would you or the doctor like to suffer with a foxtail under your eye for 4 days. If Dr. Thomas had actually checked the eye he would have found the foxtail and my dog would have been getting better not worse. My dog is being rechecked this Tuesday by our regular vet and we are hoping that the cornea is healing and there is no permanent damage. I could not in good faith recommend this vet. Obviously he has no problem with the lack of care that he gives. I am making sure I relay this experience to everyone I know who has animals. I am also contacting the State Board of Veterinary medicine to file a complaint and posting a review on the electronic neighborhood watch program. I would probably not be doing this if Dr. Thomas had taken my call. I feel it is very unprofessional to handle customers this way. read more
