I would not give this place one star except it's required---This is a sad story--My Cat BoBo is has been a important part of our family for 17 years. He's 17 which is the human equivalent of 85 in cat years. You have to handle him gently and softly because of his age. I thought it would be no big deal to treat BoBo's ear infection. I was given prices over the phone by Faryn Kapala, veterinary technician. Drew Johnson said to show up a half hour early. I was put into a TINY room where I waited for 2 hours as my cat paced in panic and in pain. Finally Dr. Karen Lovelace, appeared insisting I LEAVE MY CAT OVERNIGHT FOR A TEETH CLEANING. She was more interested in running up charges than actually helping his current problem. Having sales experience I saw through her sales pitch and I said "Why are you up-selling me expensive overnight room, board and teeth cleaning when I am here for an ear infection. Shouldn't you, treat the ear pain first, before we worry about a tooth cleaning? I would just bring him in the morning and pick him up in a couple hours-why would I leave my family pet in pain in a strange place for a meager tooth cleaning? (A CHARGE FOR OVERNIGHT BOARD!) Please let's just fix his ear!" (Clearly they're only interested in selling expensive unneeded services!) Unable to sell, she let me sit in the room for another half hour! My poor cat BoBo was crying out in this tiny room and pacing in pain. They still would NOT treat his painful ear! Finally Dr. Karen Lovelace comes back into the room SAYING ONE SHOT WOULD FIX MY CAT! (Later I found out this was untrue! He needed drops instead). She gave me a list of charges that were TRIPLE what they told me on the phone including a ridiculous charge of $42. for just looking at a slide! Surprised that the prices were NOT what they told me on they phone, I then asked if she could ask the person in charge for a discount.... She "Sure, no problem" and left the room and closed the door. SUDDENLY-THE DOOR SWINGS OPEN AND A FURIOUS DR. Drew Johnson, veterinary technician, with red eyes bulging and spit flying, SCREAMS AT ME "IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO PAY FOR SERVICES GET OUT!! GET OUT!! GET OUT!!" Meanwhile-my poor sick cat, SCARED at his yelling goes running past Drew out into the lobby and running free through the offices. To my horror- Drew, a supposed veterinary technician, chased my cat, grabbed him forcefully and threw him headfirst into the carrier! OMG I could NOT believe what I saw! I flashed $300 cash I had brought to pay and said, "Hey-I never said I wasn't going to pay, I simply was asking for a discount!" He continued to crazily scream at me "Get Out!" despite a shocked waiting room of The Cat Doctor's next victims. I will never forget the look on their faces as this crazed vet continued screaming! I spent my afternoon at this awful MEAN ANTI-CAT place in a tiny room. Instead of caring about my cat it was clear they ONLY CARE ABOUT MONEY. After taking time off work, witnessing the vet trowing my cat into the carrier and SCREAMED at-not to mentioned totally humiliated, but WORSE my cat was STILL in agonizing ear pain and not treated. In UTTER frustration I called THE CAT DOCTOR'S head office in Thousand Oaks to tell them I was going to report them to the Vet Board. William begged me to not file a report. I must be a sucker because I want to believe vets actually care about animals. (The truth seems more like these vets just want money.) He invited me to come to the main office the next day and they would "Comp" the charges for treatment. (I found out afterwards that that was a blatant lie-they tricked me into going to the other office and paying for it! I was a fool for falling for it. I was a fool. But I wanted to help ease my cats ear discomfort) The next day I showed up at the CAT DOCTOR's Thousand Oaks office. BoBo was seen by Dr. Darcie Heyes, owner, who said that the ONE SHOT the Ventura office prescribed, get this-WOULD NOT HAVE WORKED!! BoBo needed ear drops. This took maybe 5 minutes to finally treat BoBo. (The Ventura office did not care if BoBo suffered.) As I was leaving the office they charged me $65. I mentioned that William had promised to "comp" but since William was "surprise" not there... I gave up and paid anyway. I went through hell to get treatment for him. BEWARE of VETS consistently charge for unnecessary procedures to maximize profits and cause more suffering. If anyone knows a good, HONEST Vet in Ventura that likes animals, doesn't lie or steal, please post it and let us know! Folks-don't blindly let some strange vet take YOUR precious family member on a horror ride just so they can overcharge you. QUESTION the treatment! Question your doctor! and WRITE REVIEWS! Reviews are vital so we as consumers can help out each other and put crooked thieves like THE CAT DOCTOR-Ventura out of business! Do not take your cat here no matter what. Dr. Kendra is hands down the best vet I have ever met throughout my entire time rescuing animals. She honestly cares about your cat and she listens to your concerns compassionately. Furthermore, she has always been very reasonable with her prices; she makes sure that you are getting your cat treated in a way that is best and most cost-effective for you. I recently had a horrible experience and she saved my cat's life. My Cheeto had a bowel obstruction and since I had moved cities, I was at the mercy of the best vet I could find near my area. He charged me $1,100 for tests that found the obstruction and gave me a few options, but they all lead to surgery. He made it seem like that was his only option to stay alive. He quoted me 1,700 for a barium test or 2, 600 for an ultrasound to confirm what his specialist radiologist had already confirmed. Then quoted me at $ 3,700 for the actual surgery. I am of little means and there was no way I had that money. He did nothing without payment first. He told me to come back to euthanize him! I was so distraught. Although I had not seen Dr. Kendra in over a year since I had moved, I called her the next day and explained. She quoted me at 1,800 off the top of her head without having seen him yet of course and I said yes. She took him in that day. She waited after hours for me to drive there and she saw to him right away. She told me after some quick testing, that she did not feel that he needed surgery and she would try an enema, and keep him overnight to hydrate and him and make sure to give him pain meds and such. She sat with me and assured me as I was pretty distraught. The next morning she gave me the for sure good news that he would not need surgery and that she had removed some of the obstruction and would try again and remove it all. She later called me to let me know that they had removed all the hard poop and ton of hair my Cheeto had swallowed that had been accumulating. They made sure he was eating and pooping fine. My Cheeto is fine and healthy and NO SURGERY was even needed. They only charged me a little less than $600 for all the care and overnight, etc. She is INCREDIBLE and I have seen that she actually cares for cats and for their humans. I am so grateful to her and her kind staff. They were compassionate toward me and they saved my Cheeto's life and didn't take advantage of me with ridiculous overcharges. I am so incredibly GRATEFUL. There's a reason why The Cat Doctor and Dr. Kendra have so many five-star reviews. ...and I'm happy to add mine to that list! 1-Star for the staff... every single person I've talked to here has been super friendly. Each tech, every single employee has been super compassionate. 1-Star for Dr. Kendra - she's Amazing! I really can't say enough good things about this incredibly knowledgeable Vet, and quality human that genuinely cares about her patients! She will go over every concern and question in detail. 1-Star for price - very reasonably priced services. Another star for price because I'm struggling a bit and they worked with me when I was concerned about my precious kitties health. 5th star goes out to The Cat Doctor for ease of scheduling and peace of mind care... I literally trust my fur babies life with them and wouldn't go anywhere else. Ok... I lied, I went somewhere else.. ugh I'm guilty. I cheated. And I wasn't happy with the service and didn't feel the same peace of mind or connection with the vet when I went elsewhere. Never again. My senior kitty had a weight problem. Yup..she got a lil too comfortable laying around in her older years. We are a military family so we move a lot and therefore have to change vets often. The ONLY reason I am sad we found Dr Kendra at The Cat Doctor is because I know the day will come when we will have to leave the area. No other vet will ever compare! Dr Kendra has gone above and beyond for both of our kitties on more than one occasion. One time, I was sure my cat was dying. Out of the blue she started throwing up blood and couldn't even keep her head up. She would lay down next to her water bowl but couldn't even lift her head up to drink, although she tried. I don't know what miracle med Dr Kendra gave, but whatever she did was amazing! She sent my kitty home on some meds and with specific 24 hour feeding instructions. The results were night and day. The thorough explanation/discussion Dr Kendra takes the time to give a worried cat mom like me is something I have never found in any other vet. Further, Dr Kendra has even offered some advice regarding my daughter's cat who was going through a big health scare in another state 2000 miles away! I cannot recommend this clinic enough. Dr Kendra and staff are amazing and kind and they will treat your baby like their own. I know that I will never find another clinic as great as this one when the military moves us again next year :( read more

Dr. Kendra was very informative. My cat was a rescue kitty that was found discarded in a sewer drain. She presented with multiple issues. Respiratory, nasal polyps, urinary infection, ovarian cyst (found when spayed), kennel cough (at least that's what they call it when dogs get it-I forget the name it's known by when cats get it) etc. Over the course of one year she was seen and treated by 4 different vets and rescue centers in Northern California. Within four days of adopting kitty, she was seen at the Cat Clinic---and without her backstory, Dr Kendra was able to diagnose and succinctly explain/triage/categorize my cat's current health status. All the previous records from the other vets were sent, and Dr Kendra said she would review the records along with her own findings and send a complete plan for care going forward. She didn't miss or overlook any detail, and I feel confident my cat's future care is in good hands. The office staff and vet tech were very courteous. They also assessed the type of cat I had with one look (thru a darkly lined mesh cat carrier)--a Lynx Point Siamese. I appreciated the specificity, and gave it an unconscious nod to their level of expertise. read more

We moved into the area a few months ago and were recommended to The Cat Doctor by neighbors who assured us that Dr. Kendra and her staff are amazing. Sure enough, we could not have been more pleased with the welcome and treatment we received Our cat needed soft paws and a rabies shot. In keeping with the current practices given the pandemic, we called the office from the parking lot when we arrived and a very professional, sweet staff member came out to the parking lot, greeted our cat Gracie very affectionately, and took her into the building in her carrier. A staff member called me when they were finished, told me Gracie was wonderful, took my credit card number over the phone, and then brought Gracie back to the car. Gracie is a very discerning cat who can read people and situations like a book and responds accordingly. She returned to us calm and happy. It was obvious that Gracie, like us, was extremely impressed with the staff and the services. They were warm, professional, and extremely kind. We are thrilled to have found Dr. Kendra and her excellent staff, and we're sure that Gracie is also! read more

When our little guy Puck stopped eating, we called a half dozen vets for an appointment. All said, "next week" or even "next month." (With more people at home during Covid, the vet industry has been overwhelmed.) You can't wait that long when a cat stops eating because their physiology is different and they don't metabolize fat well. The result, even after a few days, can be liver failure. Dr. Kendra's staff offered to take Puck as a "walk-in" (drop off early in the morning, keep him all day, and run tests in between other patients) if they weren't inundated with walk-ins the next day. I kept that as an option but finally got a local vet to see him. The prognosis wasn't good. He has kidney disease and lymphoma. The diagnosing group wouldn't treat him, but Dr. Kendra took him on. She was kind and informative and prescribed a medication that's already making a difference. His spark is back, though we know we're on borrowed time. If I could rate The Cat Doctor in Ventura with higher ratings, I would. I was Terrified at the care and manipulation at an Agoura Hills Emergency Clinic whose Only objective was to take your money (I have receipts... they wanted me to sign in excess of $6,000 of care) while they misdiagnosed CBC numbers and gave my cat D- emergency care. While in their exam room I frantically looked online for another feline specialist and THE CAT DOCTOR popped up with a 4.9 rating. I called them though they were 30+ miles away and although they were booked up I explained my dire need for a vet who knew what they were doing. Dr. Kendra said come on in! She and her entire staff are AMAZING!!! These people Actually care. I waited in my car for hours, afraid to be away from my cat and spent the last hour in the Cat Doctor's office waiting and watching the contstant flow of cat moms and dads bringing in their floofs. Meow had a good appointment. He had an x-ray to check his congestion and blood test to check his thyroid level. He was very well taken care of and didn't have to wait too long to go home. On November 11, 2023, I brought him in to see Dr. Kendra because of heavy breathing and she found him to have congestive heart failure because he hadn't been taking thyroid medication (I had been giving herbal drops because the original Methimazole in pill form had made him sick.) Dr. Kendra rushed him right in and gave him Lysix and Methimazole. It was a Saturday so she kept him there for a few hours and we picked him up. We brought him back on Monday to see how he was doing and he had already gained a pound. By the following Friday, Meow was rolling around in the grass as he used to do. Dr. Kendra thought originally that he might not have made it through the weekend but instead by the following weekend, he was acting young again and he is 16 years old. This is a perfect example of how dedicated Dr. Kendra is to her funny, furry, feline patients and their loving partners in life... since cats basically just allow us to orbit in their universe. If you have a cat and need to see someone who is part feline herself, you MUST see Dr. Kendra at The Cat Doctor in Ventura. She is so personable, extremely intelligent and makes you and your cat feel at ease immediately. My love, Luna, just rolls around and purrs while Dr. Kendra examines her.... its just too sweet. Since Dr. Kendra is so good, she's very popular, and appts need to be made in advance, but if you need immediate attention you can always bring your kitty in and leave it with the caring staff and Dr. Kendra will make time for your furry baby. I Love The Cat Doctor! I remember the very first visit with Dr. Kendra when by babies were only 6 wks old. She was so kind and compassionate with them I knew then she would be their Vet for life. Now 7 1/2 years later I know it was the best choice I could have made for my babies. They are healthy, thriving and happy all because of that one choice 7 years ago. Everyone there is like family to us and I take them there for everything from exams to shots to grooming. I also buy Sami's food there ever since Dr. Kendra found crystals his urine. So now not only does Sami like his food which is also good for him but Delilah likes it too! Even during these difficult times when shipping has been difficult and stocks are low or backordered, Mimi found a way to insure Sami had some similar food until his came in.
