When do you decide that $$$ becomes the issue when your pet is critically ill? Last Sunday took our two and a half year old dog in as she hadn't "pooped or peed" in 24 hours. Thank goodness I listened to our friend who is a retired veterinarian. Dr. Yu and staff kept me in the loop at all times. Saw her X-ray, stayed with there as they treated her for bladder stones. Surgery was required. Dr. Yu called me at 2 am about his findings and her prognosi. Long story short, she went back and forth from there to regular vet (they are only there from 6pm to 8am) for several days. Another surgery, another 2 am phone call. It has been VERY expensive, but doc was up front about my dog's prognosis. Even though home, Dr. Yu has called several times with information about cultures and medications, and to check on her progress. She is 6 days out now and full of life and pep again. VEC and the kind, competent staff is responsible for her recovery. It got down to how much we were willing/able to pay for this life that totally depends on us. There was much discussion about this but chose to stick it out. FYI if you have a beloved pet, get health insurance. Many thanks to this entire staff!!! New facility so now actually attached to Standiford Vet. Makes several day stay far easier. Same owner, he just combined sites. Not cheap though.... read more

Awful place. One vet for the entire place on a weekend after hours. Waited 4.5 hours to be told an outrageous amount ($1800) of money to do tests on a lethargic cat. Ended up leaving with a $400 bill and zero answers and a 30 second conversation with the vet. And then never saw her again. A poor dog had come in hit by a car and there was blood all over the floors and no one cleaned it up the entire time I was there. The worst 4.5 hours I've spent anywhere in a long time. Awful. Too bad this is the only 24 vet place in town. Overpriced, ridiculous wait times and understaffed. Do not recommend. read more

This place is horrible! Such bad service and the wait was so long. They told me after I filled in the paper work that I would be seen right away, but then I had to wait for 2hours without any type of information or anything. The communication was so terrible! They didn't give me any updates on the wait and they put up a sign saying they would only be taking priority cases since they were so busy. I left and ended up going to Sisk Vet in Salida, which right as I walked in I got seen and put into a room for evaluation. I would like to start this off by saying the staff was very very sweet and with how stressed I was very caring about the situation. But that being said my dog went in for bloody stools, initially with the intake forms and talking to the vet tech I mentioned multiple times that he has gone through this situation once before and what I felt helped best was giving him lots of fluids. He was taken in and they started 1l, as much as it was probably a bother to them I called every couple hours when I was not there to check in, every time asking about fluids and a couple times they confirmed he was on the IV. I was told to bring in chicken and they were very happy to let me feed him in one of the offices. He ended up being released 3 days later for eating "better" 3 hours after getting him home he was EXTREMELY lethargic, so I went back to get him back to see the vet. When in the very full waiting room he started winning in pain and leaking blood again i decided i couldn't wait the 3+ hours again to get him to be seen and started to drive to UC Davis. When getting to the next hospital talking to the vets there they were appalled by their treatment plan. He was given appetite stimulants which does nothing but suppress the true issue, he was given only 2L of fluid over the 72+ hours he was there, and was given 2 other medications that were unnecessary. After UC Davis got him into good health and I was able to sleep for the first time in 4+ days I finally read the bill for staniford, in the description for his treatment plan described as needing "intensive course of action" but the chicken I was told I should bring in and fed him myself I was charged 15+ dollars for every time I fed him because they Weren't able to get him to eat. Also this might be not bad necessarily but kinda is on track if I should have expected this, there were multiple vet techs referring to my dog as she when he's definitely a male and I put on his for that he's a boy. Long story short I feel like I was preyed on due to my emotional state, being taken advantage of for thousands and my boy still was hanging on by a thread at the end of it all. Please let my experience be a lesson to anyone who will listen. Just go to UC Davis, it's worth the 2 extra hours. read more

Brought my dog in because he had been having diarrhea for the past 3 days and started to have blood leak out of his butt after he would poop. Came here and the charged $260 for exam and a parvovirus test even though my dog did not have parvo. Waited 9 hours to be seen only to be told that after they ran a physical exam that my dog would get on a treatment plan for something that could be healed on his own. Also wanted us to wait another two hours for someone to come and give us a treatment plan and meds even though he didn't need them. They need to hire more staff for busy days. read more

Everyone that we had help us out last night was very caring and nice. We were very grateful for this team for making Mahmah comfortable and sending her off into her deep sleep to be in doggy heaven. It is one of the saddest times in a person's life when they have to lose their furbabies. We got right in and they took care of everything nice and smoothly for us. Also supplied kleenex and gave us the time we wanted and needed. A very nice tech also came in and did a pawprint for us. Dr Caldwell was very sympathetic. First time at arrival, the young blond receptionist was extremely RUDE, I told her that my pet needed to be seen by a vet because he had lost a lot of weight. She didn't seemed to care at all and was arrogant and unprofessional with her nasty attitude. She said there was a 6 1/2 hour wait and that I had to wait outside in my car until a tech shows up and that can take up to 2 hours long. What really bothered me was that she had people waiting inside of the clinic but wouldn't allow me to go inside. One other Individual walking out said "they are f**** up here, don't bring your dog here." It's not fair for other people to wait inside and others to wait outside in their vehicles. We went there because my cat was dying! They told us he was critically ill, and basically said wouldn't be worth it to go through with the surgery because of the survival rate being at 25% this was my first experience with euthanasia. They were super unorganized, they didn't communicate well with us or each other & they just left us sitting in the room with my critically ill cat in the back without telling us what was going to happen next. This was a very sad situation and it felt like they were fake caring about what was going on and just there for the money. so do what you will with that information. They also forgot to give me any information about the urn & paw print and they forgot to give me my carrier back. read more

My heart is broken! Not only did I have to deal with the loss of my dog but I also had to deal with a very rude assistant, Kristen, which made my moment of heartbreak even more stressful!!! My beloved dog of 14 years died in surgery, the doctor told us to hurry back to say our goodbyes. We decided to take her home...they asked us if we wanted paw prints but we didn't know we would have to wait hours, we were told it'll be about 15-20 more min every time we asked... or we can call you, I said, we live out of town, how long does it take?... their response, "we're really busy"... but my dog just died and we would like to take her home and start the grieving process.... Ok wait outside and we'll bring her out... 1/2 hr, 1 hr, 2 hrs, 2 1/2hrs... They make you wait outside to bring your dog's body to you... While waiting for the paw prints and our dog who just past away, the office assistant (she said her name was Kristen), walked outside on her phone,... (after almost 3 hrs now) looked at me and said, no she's not ready yet!... so I asked how long would it take for paw prints and she snapped back in a very rude tone about how busy they were. I said, don't talk to me like that I just lost my dog and that's really rude... as she walked away and went back into the building. Kristen was really rude for no reason and showed no compassion for our loss. When I went to the office to complain, her apology was more of an accusation that she replied that way because she was on the phone... and she still did not give a genuine apology. Instead her and another office assistant that had tattoos on her neck bagan to forcefully tell us to wait outside or on the couch and to get away from the counter.... was still rude and only then she finally asked someone to get paw prints done... and get our dog ready for release. I was too distraught to argue and was just happy they were finally going to release our dog to us. When we finally got her body, they left the IV in her arm from when she was in surgery.and the paw prints were not in a certificate it was literally on scratch paper. I understand being stressed because she works in a busy environment but if they would have just given us our dog when we got there that would have been one less thing on their to do list to be stressed about. Why did it take a complaint to get them to give us our dog back??? After the complaint, it only took them 10 minutes to give me my baby. Now we can bury her and have closure. I would have given no stars but I am giving 1 star because there were 2 other office assistants that were actually very kind. Shalom and a gentleman who I didn't get his name that left at about 8:30p. She was stable but I was worried. Got her in at 430am, filled out paperwork explained what happened and the fact that she has a history of pancreatitis. The symptoms are also associated with pancreatitis. I authorized credit card charge ahead of time, asked to be called 3x for X-ray results before any other procedures may have to be done. At 730 am I get a call that Annie had surgery. I got not one call from this place, within 3 hours my dog was in and out of surgery for NO reason and without my permission or knowledge!! There was no blockage,I should have been given the opportunity to choose for My family member. She should have been given a chance with fluids and antibiotics and observation as she was stable. 2000 dollars for a procedure that put my Annie at risk, and pain and suffering for her!!!! I have attempted MULTIPLE times to speak with these people to no avail! It's not about the money , this is an ethical and moral problem with this VET! To top it off it was the director who chose to put my dog through an unnecessary procedure!!!! Brought our cat. Worried she ingested poison, she lost control of her bowels, bladder, and gagging. Arrived at 5:00pm. They had us fill out paperwork outside before letting us enter. They promised to send someone. Out take her temp and check her vitals but we watched everyone get their pets checked and communicate with staff but skipped us. Once she was taken back they assured us they'd check her vitals and speak to us but that didn't happen either. I realize they are busy but we sat there until 1:00 AM before learning anything of her status and seeing the vet. I'd say he made it worth the incredible wait. Very compassionate, thorough, kind, apologized for the lengthy wait, and she had improved over the hours we waited so we took her home. They followed up with a call later that week to see how she was doing and the cost wasn't astronomical for after hours ER visit. The wait was the worst, communication from the staff was lacking and would've made a great difference. We weren't the only ones in the reception area that felt this way. We had a lot of time to get to know people and their pets/ issues, Most of which, shared concerns over wait and lack of communication as we had. Had a serious injury (concussion/spinal) with my dog around 10pm. Arrived at this emergency vet thinking that the head injury my dog had (where there could possibly be brain bleeding/swelling which means time is of the essence) I would be able to be seen rather quickly. Wrong. I sat for hours seeing other animals coming in get seen before my dog. I understand how being seen in emergency is based on severity of injury...but head trauma SHOULD be seen ASAP. One dog had a mouse bite and was seen before mine, even though they came after me. A shift change meant further waiting, so I went to my car to sit with my dog. Around 2 AM I had enough, and went back in to see what could be causing the extremely long wait. Another shift change, and was told my dog couldn't be seen for probably another 8 hours. A nurse came out and looked at my dog, and because she wasnt "panting" she could wait. I took her to another vet, and my dog has a neck/spinal injury and now is partially paralyzed. That was $1200 that I could have dropped at this emergency clinic. Hire MORE PEOPLE.. god knows ya'all make enough. read more

We took our Dane here this last Friday at 1 am. He wasn't acting right, we thought he had a fever or was feeling ill. Turns out he had extreme back pain. The girls took him in and Doctor Holmes knew exactly what was wrong with him. For these gentle giants, finding that out before it gets worse ( how we lost our last Dane) was a great sign. He was put on meds and got a shot for the pain. He is doing a lot better but he is on bed rest. Thank you! You girls saved our baby. I/we should've waited until this Monday to take our sweet girl into our vet but because she was bleeding extremely bad from her vaginal area and should not have been because we had her spayed when when we got her eleven years ago, we took her to get help. The first clue should've been the fact that when we got there even though the lobby was empty it was 3am, we waited for 30 minutes all the while our dog was bleeding. When someone finally came to see us in the lobby, it looked like a blood bath. They took our girl and we went into an exam room. They brought our girl back to us and told us they'd have to sedate her which we expected because she doesn't like to be examined in her lady area. They told us they'd come back. Again all the while our girl was bleeding. An hour plus later they came in and again this room looked like a blood bath. A different veterinarian came in and started asking us question. She said our dog must've been poisoned which we know damn well she was not and has no access to. Then she said our other dog had to have bit her. Which was not the case these two grew up together. My husband said this was not only untrue but interesting since she had not examined our dog she did not care for the fact that we were questioning her judgment. So she said someone would be in to get our dog and also bring us a list of charges. It was over four pages to the tune of $8000.00. Given our dogs age and the fact that they told us she may still have to be put to sleep we made a heart wrenching decision. We wanted to bring her home to bury but these heartless people wanted to charge us an additional $650.00 to bring OUR dog home! We are heartbroken and extremely upset that they take advantage of you when you're most vulnerable. If this spares one person or family the heartbreak we went through we will be happy. For the sky high fees charged, I would expect better treatment, especially more sympathy, compassion and customer service. This time (7/15/23), I was one of the lucky ones who came in with a pet with an allergic reaction and left nearly 4 hours later with my pet alive at a cost of a few hundred dollars. Two years ago, one of my other dogs was there a few days, then needed euthanasia at a cost of a few thousand. So many pet owners love their animals and need responsive, affordable vet care! Tonight is the second time that I've been here, unfortunately. The first time, my little yorkie had fallen in our pool and they saved his life. It was amazing see them treat my little Peanut just like a human. They intubated him, started an IV, and provided him with life saving medications and interventions. Everyone was compassionate and genuinely cared about my little one's wellbeing. I am so thankful to everyone at Veterinary Emergency Clinic! Tonight we came in because I noticed blood in Peanut's stool. Dr. Klein was more than amazing. I love the way she interacted with both of my dogs (Peanut the patient, and his sister Lola who came for moral support). She is passionate about what she does and it definitely shows. She is super sweet. I asked, and unfortunately she doesn't work at a regular vet clinic... I would love to be able to take my babies to her for routine check-ups and shots. read more

They saved my cats life. After being rudely turned away on west lane in stockton I had no choice but to drive 40 minutes to the next closest Er which was this location. As soon as I walked in I went straight to counter. They checked on my cat right away noticed how ill he was and immediately rushed him back. After 30 minutes they called us to the back and gave us an update and went over his condition and told us he would be needing 4 different medications and 250ml of iv to get better. Whole visit took about 4 hours. Cost for visit and meds was just under $600. He was on the meds for 7-10 days and I had to force feed him during that time because medication would suppress his appetite. Now he is doing much better 2 weeks later and is back to being more independent and playful. I can't thank this place enough my cat is all I have in this world. This place has the best emergency services I have ever seen. The entire staff is compassionate for your pets. Sadly I have had to come here on more than one occasion. Each time I have been greeted with smiles and concern for my pets. My dog was immediately taken to the back after being hit by a car, the doctor instantly gave her pain meds and got her started on ivs to stop her from getting worse. Another time I came in not such a big emergency I was put in a room the doctor came in and took the time to explain what was going on and talked about the medications she needed and the nurse also took time to show me how to give the meds. My poor indoor kitty was infected with fleas by a visiting feline. I stupidly purchased some flea medication and administered the medication as per the directions. Well, later that evening my poor baby started salivating and foaming at the mouth. Since it was after hours her vet's office was closed. Luckily they had an answering service and they sent us to the Emergency Clinic. They were really helpful and friendly and saved my kitty. They told me that a lot of cats have reactions to topical flea medications and some even die. :( So needless to say I won't be purchasing that medicine ever again. If I ever, heaven forbid, have a pet emergency again I will definitely bring my pet to the Veterinary Emergency Clinic. Five stars for saving my kitty's life! Meow. read more

We brought in our three year old, male GSD when he was vomiting and had diarrhea. I forgot the ladies name, but she was very caring and made sure he was taken care of. We brought him in at around midnight and we were tired and worried, but we were relieved when all he needed was antibiotics, other medications and a strict diet for a week or so. This staff is sweet and caring but their policy's for paying are horrible. I brought my dog in when she had massive signs of pyrometra which is n infection of the uterus. My dog had only been showing signs for 7 hours, they told me if I couldn't pay 1500 dollars out of pocket they couldn't help me. Mind you pyrometra can kill a dog in 48 hours. I don't understand how you can run vet and turn people away when they don't have 1500 dollars just laying around. Another thing my dog was given an ultra sound which was needed to diagnose.. But I was never told before they did it I had to pay. I specifically asked how much the app. Would be before I came in KNOWING I had rent due on the first and my money situation. Thankful we had care credit which saved us.. But they need to tell you before assuming that you have money to pay. The total was 127 dollars and they discounted the ultra sound? So instead of paying 87 I paid 127 to leave that vet an go to another where they did the same thing.. Like I said the staff was very nice but people need to be told what is going on and not just left in a room to wonder what's going on.. They need to be informed in how much it will cost before you just start racking up charges.
