Only giving it 4 stars because of the insane wait time. With no communication and we watched others come and go even after us and be assessed before us. We waited 2.5 hours before being even assessed. But other than that I was happy with the visit. I read all the reviews and was worried about the level of care due to what I was reading. My cat bootsie came in with what seemed like she was exposed to a toxin. I'm glad we brought her in. It was the hardest decision ever but right by her. She had a fever of 106.4 and would have likely passed at home in pain. We opted for euthanasia due to the diagnosis and I knew it was coming. I couldn't afford treatment as it was. They didn't even charge me for the doctors exam for the $189 they only charged us for the euthanasia. Which I felt was a fair price for $199 to take the body home vs golden valley vet whom I called for a quote on the same thing and they quoted me $360!!! Not even for cremation The doctor she was very kind and explained the options and gave me reality. We made the right choice by Bootsie. The staff were great in helping me shave a patch of her fur and even got her paw prints for me and nose prints. I didn't even think they would get it since her whole mouth was covered in the activated charcoal I gave her. But I saw when I got home how many great prints they did of her paws and nose and it warmed my heart to have those. Thanks for helping her transition over the rainbow bridge read more

I had the unfortunate and sad experience of having my very ill older dog euthanized. I love my dog with all my heart and want the best for her, but I didn't have the money to pay for what some other clinics quoted and these are not emergency veterinary clinics. I called two vet clinics one that I used to go to and another one that I have been going to. The first quoted almost $700 for a little dog plus a $95 fee for coming in the same day. It made me sick that this is the way they think. Nothing but money not a care in the world about my pet. I'm glad I dropped them a year ago. The second one didn't even answer the phone and kept me on hold two times for over 30 minutes. so in desperation, I called Staniford veterinary clinic. They charged me less than the first veterinary clinic. They were so kind to me and so loving and treated my precious dog with kindness through the whole process and even when they carried her out of the room gently. I stayed with her the whole time and told her to go to God that I would see her again. This is a wonderful clinic and I am forever grateful for how well they treated her. Years ago and Neighbor's dog attacked one of my dogs and injured him beyond help. At that time they also were very gentle with me and explain that nothing could be done. Unknowingly my poor Karma passed away in the car on my way to the Stanford Vet center. They came out with a gurney and I was seated in an exam room. Then the vet came in and told me that she had passed! They brought Karma into the room where I was and told me I could stay with Karma as long as I liked. Everyone was so kind. The vet, technicians and office staff were so compassionate and understanding. I decided to take Karma home and they had her ready, wrapped in plastic then a white shroud and placed in a box ready for me to transport her home. They had also taken nose and paw prints and handed me a sweet condolence card signed by the whole staff. Karma was 13 years old and died from Cushing"s Disease. read more

I've been coming to Standiford since I was 12 years old. Now as an adult, I've been bringing my service dogs to them for almost 15 years. I've looked over the years for a closer vet (Sonoma County and San Jose) but the trust I have with Standiford could not be matched. My dog suffered a rare medical injury at a specialty vet. While he was hospitalized at a different hospital, Standiford staff were over the top with their support. Helping me make difficult decisions if the time came, then to the celebration of him achieving milestones of recovery. Coming home had its own challenges. The staff have been accommodating our appointments with all the uncertainty with my older dog and making it work with the puppy last minute appointment changes. I cannot thank them enough for everything they have done for us. Baileys, Bogart, and Wendell have had the best care for their everyday lives with their outstanding care. read more

All the negative reviews infuriate me. Vet med is one of the professions with the highest suicide rates. So many of the poor reviews claim the staff at Standiford are in it "for the money." Nothing could be FURTHER from the truth. Treatment is going to be expensive, especially ER visits. I have friends in vet med and none of them will tell you that they are in for the money. None. Also, not all animals can be saved, and some people just don't realize that. If you are going to take care of an animal for its entire life, you need to be budgeting accordingly and taking proper procedures to set aside money for emergencies. Even budgeting for annuals is important. And if money is tight, financing such as CareCredit or Affirm is available. Nobody said taking care of an animal was cheap. And tbh, if you cannot afford to take care of an animal, you are not ready for one. I have always had a positive experience with the staff at Standiford. Not just for my personal dog, but also with client dogs who have needed ER visits. Even though we now live several hours away, I still drive my dog to Standiford for annuals because it's the only vet hospital and ER we trust. We recently had to take my 6-year old dog Newt in for a sprain in his back leg. He was unable to bear weight and was screaming (partially the pain, partially Siberian dramatics). The techs took him in on the gurney and he was immediately rushed in to the back. Dr. Zach Albudri was the one in charge of looking at Newt. When he returned, his bedside manner was excellent. The way he spoke with my husband and I was extremely professional, and he gave us two options for treatment. He also mentioned to us that he loved Newt and that Siberians were one of his favorite breeds because of the Iditarod. This is where people complain about the price. We had the OPTION to either go home with some Rx meds OR opt for rads to rule out anything else. It was completely our choice, and to us it was a no-brainer to do rads. Yes they were ~$400, so what? For peace of mind of course we would do them. It's quite obvious that the smart choice would be to pay the extra money to make sure Newt didn't have any arthritis or HD. Thankfully his rads came back normal and we were sent on our way with meds for what turned out to be only a sprain. If we had never done the rads we would not have felt as relieved as we did. In addition, when I noticed on the treatment sheet that a catheter would need to be inserted for sedation, I asked that the techs NOT shave Newt's leg as he was a show dog, and that if his leg did need to be shaved, that it had to be the non-show side. They honored my request and when we picked him up, nothing was shaved. I have always been extremely picky about which vet Newt goes to, especially since he is a well-bred dog that participates in conformation and other sports. I never thought I'd ever have to bring Newt in for an ER visit but there we were, and if anything happened again, Standiford would be my first choice. I want to give a huge thank you to Dr. Albudri and the staff at Standiford for all the hard work that they do, and am so appreciative of everything. I will continue to bring Newt (and any of my future dogs) to Standiford for annuals and ER visits, if that happens again. read more

Our dog got bit by a rattlesnake. We were torn between here and another emergency vet in the area but ultimately chose to go here driving an extra 9 minutes. We called ahead and they immediately met us at the from upon arrival and took our dog back. They called us in a room within 10 minutes and suggested some blood work to see how bad the bite was if it might've been a dry bite. It wasn't and they worked with us on what we could afford for her antivenin and overnight stay. They were more than helpful and kind in their treatment of us and our toddler dog. When we came in, there was a client lamenting at the front desk. "I thought you at least would do something to try to save him". Thinking the man was distraught over losing his pet, I put it out of mind. My pet was there for ingesting human medication. We needed emergency help and quickly. The Doctors primary recommendation were charcoal to absorb the toxins and fluids. I agreed to the full cost of over $700.00 immediately. Time was of the essence. Then.....My puppy was left in a cage, with no treatment for over 4 hours. No Charcoal, no fluids. Simply left in his cage while the toxins digested through his system. This review is for Dr. Lepiz. She was super thorough when I brought my kitten in, as all the other vets I seen prior just felt rushed and brushed off the kittens condition. Dr. Lepiz knew something wasn't right and suggested more testing to get down to the cause and seemed highly concerned of the kittens condition asking questions, and asking for symptoms . She didn't push on medications that wouldn't be necessary til the results came in. Ultimately the kitten was diagnosed with FIP and we placed the medication order before the results came in. To me it was so obvious after the other blood work only suggested infection that should have been cured by the amoxicillin. Thanks to her and her paying close attention to her being smaller than usual and symptoms . Not judging us once. Unfortunately the GS Medication to save her arrived two days too late. I see quite a bit of negative reviews here, but I had a very different experience. I took my dog in because she was obviously in pain, but I didn't know what the cause was. Ultrasound showed she had liver tumors and was heavily bleeding into her abdomen. She had to be put down. All the staff members were very kind to me. The vet (unfortunately did not get her name) was super professional, straight forward, and as nice as possible about everything. She has a very difficult job. Nobody wants to put an animal down!! This was at 5am and it's an emergency medicine vet. Of course they charged more than a regular vet. However, they partially refunded what they initially charged me when they realized she had to be put down and no longer needed further workup/treatment. The bill went from $850 to $640. They could have just stuck with the initial charge and said they did x, y, and z to justify it but they did not. I didn't even ask and I was in no position to know any better. So if anyone reads these reviews, know that there are honest people working there. Maybe there's some bad apples I don't know, but this was my experience. read more

My dog recently had an ear hematoma drained and we returned three days later for her recheck. After paying $1,200 for the initial procedure, the staff informed me she would need new bandages and would have to be sedated again, costing another $460. I told them I couldn't pay that today, and they responded by saying it wasn't life-threatening and that if it got worse I could bring her back. Then they handed my dog back to me in a condition that was honestly unacceptable. Thank God my wife and I are competent enough to wrap her ear properly ourselves -- with a $3 bandage, no sedation needed. The fact that we could do a clean, secure wrap at home makes me question why they insisted on sedation and hundreds more in charges. I'm extremely disappointed with how this was handled and the lack of care shown once I declined the extra fees. I have left 2 photos above. The first one is the estimate I got from Standiford Vet Hospital, the second from another place (if you need an incredible emergency vet, I will gladly provide that name outside this review). Our small dog was peeing blood excessively, lethargic, and not eating. So we rushed her to SVH. First off, my husband arrived at SVH at 4 pm and waited 5 hours for them to say you need to pay over $900 for blood work and more tests. He couldn't, so he brought her back home. We managed to ask for money from family, and we returned. They charged us the nearly $1k for x-rays and urinalysis. In total, for other tests and fees, we paid $1.5k. After that, they diagnosed her with pyometra, a life-threatening condition that requires surgery for the removal of the uterus. Their estimate on the high end was $5,322. This would've been on top of the $1.5k already spent. We, of course, did not have that kind of money, and their only "options" were Care Credit and Scratch Pay. We got denied. We talked to them about potential payment options or anything else since our dog was going to die. The reception lady just kept saying "sorry unfortunately no". We asked for referrals to other places, and they said, "we don't know." Okay, cool, zero options. Secondly, their demeanor was trash. The receptionist lady was impatient, seemed frustrated, and rushed people who were clearly grieving and upset. They didn't explain anything bout costs. They just bring you a paper with an egregious total and hand you a pen. The way they handled my, mind you x-small dog, was ridiculous. They muzzled her because she was "nippy", i must note she could barely walk and was disoriented. They took her and left us waiting. Once again, there were no explanations, no care, no compassion. After they proved to be completely useless, we contacted another vet and set up to meet in the morning. When I brought her into this other hospital, they immediately admitted us. They didn't muzzle her, and they took her in with care. While I waited, the vet himself came into the room, sat down, and explained everything to me. (The SVH vet NEVER came in or spoke to us directly) Numer one, he told me he couldn't 100 rule that it was pyometra, but that he recommended spaying her anyways to prevent that in the future. This reduced the cost astronomically as he put it down as a regular spay. I was blunt about the amount of money I had, and he stopped me and said, "Don't worry about that right now, we will get her in, and we'll work on that later." They brought me an estimate (the second photo). On the high end, $3,811. I agreed and paid $1.6k as this was 70% of the low-end cost. He called 3 times and updated me throughout the day. The next morning, I was able to pick her up. My doggy was on the receptionist lap, happy, wagging her tail. No need for muzzles. That told me everything. Longest story short, I paid them a TOTAL of $1,200 for surgery and also a removal of a mass in her breast. They REFUNDED ME $400. How does SVH get away with charging over 5k to people in desperate need? I have no clue. Take my review into serious consideration. These people DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOU. They will try to get as much money from you as possible. They shouldn't be running what they've got going. Do not take your pets here. They are money-hungry, price gouging scammers. read more

We rushed out mini weenie here on 02/04/26 with extreme overnight unexplained weight loss. When we got there we were fully expecting to have to put her down. Dr Schacher went right to work running tests to get us answers. The first few tests did not help with anything but he was determined. By the middle of the night we had some answers but were waiting on a few more results. During the night we dealt with Dr. Sorenson. She was wonderful and worked just as hard. Within 24 hours we had answers and a treatment plan. We were able to take our girl home saturday morning and she is doing wonderful. It was 4 AM on Tuesday morning and I had to rush my Yorkie to the emergency room because I suspected she had food poisoning. Upon arriving the first thing that I had stated was that I think that my dog had poisoning they took her in the back put her in an oxygen tank and came in and said they suspect that she had a stroke or a spinal injury that she was in a lot of pain asked me if they could give her a pain medication shot that would be $150 I said yes.. I was in tears crying, thinking I was about to have to put my baby girl down.. one of the ladies came in and spoke with me and said they would like to keep her overnight and it would cost $4000 not even offering me a tissue. I had tears all over my face.. I declined after they told me that they don't know what is exactly wrong and that she would need to be sent out for an MRI which could be around 15,000. As much as no one wants to go to the emergency vet, I'm very grateful we have Standiford! My girl had an unfortunate run in with some barbed wire one evening and I immediately knew where to take her. Despite being busy when we got there, staff took her back very quickly and gave her an injection for pain to keep her comfortable. Dr. Holmes was amazing in quickly assessing her and telling us the game plan. She did a great job patching her up in surgery and gave us a call to update how things went and when she'd be ready to come home. On Feb. 27, 2026, Friday, our dog had surgery for lumps in her mouth & several in her body per the wellness check that was done. We were glad the Vet Dr Hong, did a good thorough job and the surgery was very good. We like and we're happy with the Vet Drs, we've known Dr. Lattig for a long time & so are the new Drs. However, their customer service on the front desk is terrible, we made several calls to find out if our dog is ready for pick-up, not one answered the phone as the calls were made after 5pm, NO ONE picked up the call and it goes into a never ending loop, the selection we made was #3 which is a non emergency call which was just to find out if our dog is ready to pick-up. It was very frustrating & angered us since the office should have called us for courtesy call that our dog was ready for pick-up. We decided to just go in the center, there were at least 3 people in the front desk and yet no one picked up our call, the excuse was.. we should select #1 which is emergency, but we told them the call was not emergency so.. we were so upset that we told them we just spent $3,000.00 for my dog's care and could not even get a proper customer service. The management of Standiford Vet Hospital should change their answering machine to press 1 after 5pm so people calls get answered by the staff who seemed to not be aware of what customer service means at any given time in their 24hr hospital. This was a very very aggravating day for us. We hope that they train their front desk personnel much better especially on phone calls that should not be ignored at any given time in their 24hr service hospital. read more

Wow, the business owner didn't even give us a different number to call and I don't trust anyone at that facility. The meds given aren't even FDA approved and the side effects are atrocious. She's had seizures and peed all over herself because she can't even move. She was not like this when we brought her in and I feel they gave us meds to kill her because we didn't go with the more expensive treatment. They saw I was in between vets and took advantage of us. I'm on snap and disability so I'm m on a very tight budget. It's not like I want to be cheep it's what I can afford. My baby shouldn't be penalized because I can't shell out thousands of dollars for treatments. One time my dog got bit in the eye and they told me that I needed to have the whole eyeball removed. Which was untrue. I went to a animal eye specialist and they told me all he needs is antibiotics. Then another time one of my dogs was ran over by a car going very low speed and even though I told him he was in critical condition, they were dragging him on a leash. They are cruel and they do not care about animals!!! they literally see animals as money that's it.. She walked in and came out with her back legs not moving--she was dragging herself the first day. Then I took her back in the afternoon, and the doctor said I should put her to sleep because she was suffering, but we didn't allow it. Now my little dog is walking again. I was advised by my vet to get an ultrasound by a specialist as we wanted to determine if there was internal issues before testing for Cushings. I called Stanford and the person who took my call advised me that I can walk in on Monday morning when Dr. Zach Alburdri (goes by Dr. Zak,) was in. He specializes in ultrasounds and would be the perfect fit for what I was looking for. My senior dog has been showing syptoms of Cushings, but has a handful of underlying issues as well. We checked in shortly after 8AM and maybe 20 minutes later Sunday went back for intial exam. I was then called in and Dr. Zak explained the process. We agreed to the estimate and I was then called back in after the ultrasound. Dr. Zak was amazing, he came in with the ultrasound machine (think electronic battlefield game machine.) He then ran out to grab his laptop and explained everything like he was teaching. He showed me examples of what Sunday's organs should look like compared to the issues she had. He showed measurements, mulitple images and broke it down seamelessly. He then laid out treatment options. We agreed with her age and other issues she has, we were going to move forward with the blood testing for Cushings which is multiple blood draws over the 8 hour day. I left her in good hands and headed home. I ended up back in Modesto after 8PM, she had started testing around noon so I figured I would make my way back to pick her up. Before checking in I got a call from Dr. Conner advising me of some issues with testing. He apologized, but Sunday would have to come back the following day to start testing over. I did pick her up for the night, Dr. Conner came out and again apologized for the issue. The office compensated me for the error and testing went as expected the following day. Mistakes happen and I was thankful for finding Dr. Zak and Dr. Conner to take care of Sunday. Dr. Zak did confirm the Cushing and was able to prescribe medication. I also received instructions moving forward and Standiford communicated everything to my local vet. In the end, I had a good experience and will use Standiford for all my emergency pet needs. read more

It's taking me a while to write this post because I want to make sure that I wasn't emotional when I was doing it but back in July. We took our dog there because they were recommended once we got there. Our dog was in bad shape and we didn't have much choice. Every time they walked in to give us bad news. They act like they were sympathetic, but they came in with a credit card or ATM machine under their arm, which is very tacky making sure they got there money every time they did a diagnose. The veterinarian who worked on our dog was very unprofessional and really had no sympathy for what we were going through. Our dog was there for about an hour before he passed we had to pay $1480 for our dog's diagnosis. And they still couldn't tell us what our dog died from unless we paid more money. If you have options, please go somewhere else. but if I could give them no stars I would. read more

Unfortunately, the care we received was far from satisfactory, and it resulted in a stressful and potentially harmful experience for my pet and my family. Initially, the clinic seemed to address the wound well, inserting two drains into the injury. However, during a follow-up visit, I noticed one of the drains was missing, which I pointed out to the technician. Despite my concerns, they assured me everything was fine and removed the remaining drain. They recommended another recheck due to some swelling, which I followed through on. The veterinarian assured me all was healing well. Weeks later, I noticed my dog was still uncomfortable, and after a third visit, it was discovered that a drain had been left inside the wound. The clinic performed surgery to remove the leftover material (which I photographed), and while they did refund the cost of the surgery, this mistake caused my dog unnecessary pain and delayed his recovery. The problems didn't end there. After the surgery, a culture was taken, but I wasn't informed of the results for almost two weeks. When I finally heard back, they recommended a stronger antibiotic but failed to provide important details. When I called to learn more and speak to a vet, I received no response. A technician eventually told me my dog had tested positive for MRSP (Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius), not MRSA, which is usually not contagious to humans. However, the clinic failed to clearly explain the situation, causing unnecessary worry about the risk of transmission. Human doctors later informed me that the risk of exposure was minimal, given that the infection was contained within the wound. Getting the prescription filled was another nightmare. The clinic sent the wrong dosage to the pharmacy, and it took over a week of back-and-forth just to get the correct medication. Ultimately, I ended up paying for the medication to treat the infection, as well as an additional culture, all because of the conflicting information and poor communication from the clinic. During my final visit, I met with the office manager to discuss the issues, only to be met with more conflicting information and excuses. I was told verbally that my dog's infection was contagious and that I should have my family and other pets checked out, which was alarming and added more stress to an already difficult situation. After this ordeal, I took my dog to **VEG (Veterinary Emergency Group) in San Ramon**, and the experience was night and day. They reviewed the prescription dosage, ensured it was correct, and provided clear instructions on the precautions needed to administer the medication, which has special handling requirements. Their professionalism and thorough care were a huge relief after the chaos at Standiford. Overall, this experience has left me deeply disappointed in Standiford Veterinary Center. The lack of communication, errors in treatment, and poor handling of a serious infection have eroded my trust in this clinic. If you're looking for reliable and compassionate care, I highly recommend taking your pet to **VEG (Veterinary Emergency Group) in San Ramon**. Horrible customer service from the receptionist! They make you wait and if you call for an update, they put you on hold forever! So i decided to go inside and this is what the receptionist had to say "oh we just call in the back, and if they pick up they pick up.' I mean this is an emergency dept. You dont address any issues at the ED like that especially if your pet is really sick. Also they charge an arm and a leg for everything. MD was great though, just the front desk needs some customer service skills. read more
