This review is for Dr. Lepiz. She was super thorough when I brought my kitten in, as all the other vets I seen prior just felt rushed and brushed off the kittens condition. Dr. Lepiz knew something wasn't right and suggested more testing to get down to the cause and seemed highly concerned of the kittens condition asking questions, and asking for symptoms . She didn't push on medications that wouldn't be necessary til the results came in. Ultimately the kitten was diagnosed with FIP and we placed the medication order before the results came in. To me it was so obvious after the other blood work only suggested infection that should have been cured by the amoxicillin. Thanks to her and her paying close attention to her being smaller than usual and symptoms . Not judging us once. Unfortunately the GS Medication to save her arrived two days too late. No one's fault it's just not a medication I see is on hand. Thank you Dr.Lepiz for genuinely caring about Ivy. I will never forget the care and concern you provided.

If your fur babies have a life or death medical emergency Please DO NOT GO TO STANDIFORD VETERINARY CENTER unless you have a lot of money!!! These people are over charging cash pigs and they do not care about your pets at all . They would not save my baby boys life unless I had $800.00 and that was just to keep him over night but they told me that it WAS NOT a guarantee that they could actually save him or not and the moment I told them hey I was here earlier that day and I had given you $400 and something dollars already and you guys were supposed to give me some medication that was supposed to help him but no they didn't give me any medication that was supposed to help him instead the moment I told them that and that I didn't have the money on hand at the moment they didn't even try to resuscitate him or save him instead they just let him die so tell me do you want to take your pet there I wouldn't take any pet there after this situation ever again. By the way I would strongly recommend that you give your dog at least a quarter of a garlic clove if not every day then at least once a month that will prevent my troll heart valve disease trust me I had a dog before buddy I had her for 18 years and she passed away with a healthy heart and healthy blood and healthy heart valves the only reason why she went is because I took her to the Small animal hospital which I should have took her back to San Francisco because over there they have the resources to help people but over here they don't have anything to help anything but their wallets and I didn't even want to give these guys a star but I had you in order to post this so please take it with a grain of salt if you want or just take it full-heartedly and know that Hall is stick before actual traditional medicine is the way to go look it up people and no garlic cloves are not toxic do some real deep research and you'll find out how beneficial they are to your dogs trust me 18 years that should prove it right there she would have lived to be 25 if had I would have taken her to a hospital that actually did the x-rays that I paid them to do then they would have known that it was a foxtail that went in her nose other than that she had the healthiest blood and the healthiest heart they had ever seen they asked me what my secret was so I'm sharing this secret with all of you

I've been coming to Standiford since I was 12 years old. Now as an adult, I've been bringing my service dogs to them for almost 15 years. I've looked over the years for a closer vet (Sonoma County and San Jose) but the trust I have with Standiford could not be matched. My dog suffered a rare medical injury at a specialty vet. While he was hospitalized at a different hospital, Standiford staff were over the top with their support. Helping me make difficult decisions if the time came, then to the celebration of him achieving milestones of recovery. Coming home had its own challenges. The staff have been accommodating our appointments with all the uncertainty with my older dog and making it work with the puppy last minute appointment changes. I cannot thank them enough for everything they have done for us. Baileys, Bogart, and Wendell have had the best care for their everyday lives with their outstanding care.

All the negative reviews infuriate me. Vet med is one of the professions with the highest suicide rates. So many of the poor reviews claim the staff at Standiford are in it "for the money." Nothing could be FURTHER from the truth. Treatment is going to be expensive, especially ER visits. I have friends in vet med and none of them will tell you that they are in for the money. None. Also, not all animals can be saved, and some people just don't realize that. If you are going to take care of an animal for its entire life, you need to be budgeting accordingly and taking proper procedures to set aside money for emergencies. Even budgeting for annuals is important. And if money is tight, financing such as CareCredit or Affirm is available. Nobody said taking care of an animal was cheap. And tbh, if you cannot afford to take care of an animal, you are not ready for one. I have always had a positive experience with the staff at Standiford. Not just for my personal dog, but also with client dogs who have needed ER visits. Even though we now live several hours away, I still drive my dog to Standiford for annuals because it's the only vet hospital and ER we trust. We recently had to take my 6-year old dog Newt in for a sprain in his back leg. He was unable to bear weight and was screaming (partially the pain, partially Siberian dramatics). The techs took him in on the gurney and he was immediately rushed in to the back. Dr. Zach Albudri was the one in charge of looking at Newt. When he returned, his bedside manner was excellent. The way he spoke with my husband and I was extremely professional, and he gave us two options for treatment. He also mentioned to us that he loved Newt and that Siberians were one of his favorite breeds because of the Iditarod. This is where people complain about the price. We had the OPTION to either go home with some Rx meds OR opt for rads to rule out anything else. It was completely our choice, and to us it was a no-brainer to do rads. Yes they were ~$400, so what? For peace of mind of course we would do them. It's quite obvious that the smart choice would be to pay the extra money to make sure Newt didn't have any arthritis or HD. Thankfully his rads came back normal and we were sent on our way with meds for what turned out to be only a sprain. If we had never done the rads we would not have felt as relieved as we did. In addition, when I noticed on the treatment sheet that a catheter would need to be inserted for sedation, I asked that the techs NOT shave Newt's leg as he was a show dog, and that if his leg did need to be shaved, that it had to be the non-show side. They honored my request and when we picked him up, nothing was shaved. I have always been extremely picky about which vet Newt goes to, especially since he is a well-bred dog that participates in conformation and other sports. I never thought I'd ever have to bring Newt in for an ER visit but there we were, and if anything happened again, Standiford would be my first choice. I want to give a huge thank you to Dr. Albudri and the staff at Standiford for all the hard work that they do, and am so appreciative of everything. I will continue to bring Newt (and any of my future dogs) to Standiford for annuals and ER visits, if that happens again.

Over $1 090 to get a female kitten fixed
    Brian E.

There are positives to coming here, 24 hour care, ability to drop off injured strays. The vets and their staff always seem to genuinely care about my animals. Negatives? Thry have a large staff so you never seem to see the same vet twice so continuity is a challenge. Cost is a huge issue. Attached is an estimate for between $1090 to $1140 to have my female kitten fixed. I had already paid approximately $400 for full series of vaccinations, wellness exam and microchip. I feel the word insulting is not strong enough. I have to keep them in mind going forward as there is a lack of 24 hour vet care around Modesto in case of emergencies but if I can avoid this vet, I will for my 3 cats and dog. Now I have to find a more affordable vet to get her fixed as soon as possible.

    Gibson - Getting better everyday!
    Bren E.

Our cat Gibson had a severe reaction to Methimazole, and we drove over an hour to Standiford for emergency care. From the moment we arrived, the team welcomed us with professionalism, kindness, and genuine empathy. Because of the urgency of his case, they took him in immediately--and 42 hours later, we were able to bring our boy home. Yes, the care was expensive, but they explained every cost up front. You can ask questions at any time and adjust the treatment plan if needed. The doctors and staff were wonderful throughout the process. It's also important to know that this facility provides 24/7 emergency care, which is rare for veterinary centers. They are extremely busy and triage cases to help the greatest number of pets with the resources available. Sometimes there may only be one doctor on duty, so patience is essential--they will get to you and take care of your pet. They saved our cats life. My advice: bring a book, a snack, some water, and a little extra kindness. Thank you Standiford!

My dog recently had an ear hematoma drained and we returned three days later for her recheck. After paying $1,200 for the initial procedure, the staff informed me she would need new bandages and would have to be sedated again, costing another $460. I told them I couldn't pay that today, and they responded by saying it wasn't life-threatening and that if it got worse I could bring her back. Then they handed my dog back to me in a condition that was honestly unacceptable. Thank God my wife and I are competent enough to wrap her ear properly ourselves -- with a $3 bandage, no sedation needed. The fact that we could do a clean, secure wrap at home makes me question why they insisted on sedation and hundreds more in charges. I'm extremely disappointed with how this was handled and the lack of care shown once I declined the extra fees. Pet owners deserve transparency, compassion, and basic respect -- especially after already paying for surgery.

    Estimate from Standiford Vet Hosptial
    Loaris Y.

I have left 2 photos above. The first one is the estimate I got from Standiford Vet Hospital, the second from another place (if you need an incredible emergency vet, I will gladly provide that name outside this review). Our small dog was peeing blood excessively, lethargic, and not eating. So we rushed her to SVH. First off, my husband arrived at SVH at 4 pm and waited 5 hours for them to say you need to pay over $900 for blood work and more tests. He couldn't, so he brought her back home. We managed to ask for money from family, and we returned. They charged us the nearly $1k for x-rays and urinalysis. In total, for other tests and fees, we paid $1.5k. After that, they diagnosed her with pyometra, a life-threatening condition that requires surgery for the removal of the uterus. Their estimate on the high end was $5,322. This would've been on top of the $1.5k already spent. We, of course, did not have that kind of money, and their only "options" were Care Credit and Scratch Pay. We got denied. We talked to them about potential payment options or anything else since our dog was going to die. The reception lady just kept saying "sorry unfortunately no". We asked for referrals to other places, and they said, "we don't know." Okay, cool, zero options. Secondly, their demeanor was trash. The receptionist lady was impatient, seemed frustrated, and rushed people who were clearly grieving and upset. They didn't explain anything bout costs. They just bring you a paper with an egregious total and hand you a pen. The way they handled my, mind you x-small dog, was ridiculous. They muzzled her because she was "nippy", i must note she could barely walk and was disoriented. They took her and left us waiting. Once again, there were no explanations, no care, no compassion. After they proved to be completely useless, we contacted another vet and set up to meet in the morning. When I brought her into this other hospital, they immediately admitted us. They didn't muzzle her, and they took her in with care. While I waited, the vet himself came into the room, sat down, and explained everything to me. (The SVH vet NEVER came in or spoke to us directly) Numer one, he told me he couldn't 100 rule that it was pyometra, but that he recommended spaying her anyways to prevent that in the future. This reduced the cost astronomically as he put it down as a regular spay. I was blunt about the amount of money I had, and he stopped me and said, "Don't worry about that right now, we will get her in, and we'll work on that later." They brought me an estimate (the second photo). On the high end, $3,811. I agreed and paid $1.6k as this was 70% of the low-end cost. He called 3 times and updated me throughout the day. The next morning, I was able to pick her up. My doggy was on the receptionist lap, happy, wagging her tail. No need for muzzles. That told me everything. Longest story short, I paid them a TOTAL of $1,200 for surgery and also a removal of a mass in her breast. They REFUNDED ME $400. How does SVH get away with charging over 5k to people in desperate need? I have no clue. Take my review into serious consideration. These people DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOU. They will try to get as much money from you as possible. They shouldn't be running what they've got going. Do not take your pets here. They are money-hungry, price gouging scammers.

As much as no one wants to go to the emergency vet, I'm very grateful we have Standiford! My girl had an unfortunate run in with some barbed wire one evening and I immediately knew where to take her. Despite being busy when we got there, staff took her back very quickly and gave her an injection for pain to keep her comfortable. Dr. Holmes was amazing in quickly assessing her and telling us the game plan. She did a great job patching her up in surgery and gave us a call to update how things went and when she'd be ready to come home. The front desk staff and techs do a wonderful job balancing all their tasks while also being attentive and compassionate to both the pets and owners. Massive thank you to Standiford!

When my family dropped her off, they were told she could not leave her blanket or toy with her. However, the website clearly states that dogs are allowed to bring a blanket and a toy from home to help them feel comfortable. That is exactly why we brought those items, so this was confusing right from the start. The following day I called to check in and was told she was doing fine--eating, drinking, and adjusting well. I called again and was told the same thing. I asked if they could send me pictures of her, and when I received them I noticed a cut on the bottom of her chest. If I had not asked for photos, I don't believe I would have been notified about the injury at all. My dog has never cut herself before, so naturally as a dog parent you start worrying and thinking the worst. She is crate trained and sleeps in her crate at home, so it is normally her safe place. When I asked about the cut, they repeatedly told me they checked the kennels to make sure it was safe and suggested it could have been from a handler's collar getting stuck in her hair. However, my dog has very thin hair and the cut is nowhere near where a collar would normally sit, which made that explanation hard to believe. Another major concern was that their website advertises "all day play," yet in every picture they sent she was on a collar and leash. I was also told that they do not allow dogs to play with other dogs due to safety concerns, which directly contradicts what is advertised. Additionally, in the photos my dog looked very sad and withdrawn, when normally she is very happy and loves to play. This made me concerned that she may have been kept in a kennel and on a leash for most of the time she was there. Because of this, I immediately called family to pick up my dog early. The entire situation made me very uncomfortable and I did not feel confident leaving her there for the remainder of the stay. I chose this place because of the positive Google reviews, but after this experience I truly wish I had paid closer attention to the Yelp reviews as well. I will not be leaving my dog here again.

She was there during a hot streak and when I picked her up she was bloated to twice her size and they said she had just begun to act odd 20 minutes before pick up. I rushed her to Standiford Vet and they performed emergency surgery for GDV (stomach bloat). They said this happens when dogs are walked in extreme heat and are then fed food or given water. The dog will gulp water and also air which causes their stomach to inflate. This will affect their organs, mostly the heart. I spent $5k on this emergency surgery and my dog didn't make it. I'm not placing blame nor did I seek for any damages but I would have expected a boarding place to be better educated on how to prevent GDV or at least recognize the signs to call me to come get her to take her to the ER. The new ownership has jacked up the price by 50%! It now costs $60 rather than $40! Included in that is $10/day just to feed your dog!!! Are you kidding me?!?!? If I board him there four days, I could have bought a bag of the Kirkland brand they use that would last him 6 weeks! When I brought my dog home, he ran straight to his water bowl and drank nearly the entire bowl. Apparently Top Notch no longer provides water to boarders!!! It probably costs another $10/day for that. What next? $10/day for the air he breathes? Last time they overcharged me for my stay. The clerk said she couldn't give me the breakdown of the charge until she ran my card. Then I could log onto their new website to see the breakdown. Sure enough, she overcharged me. Oddly, she didn't know how to credit my card, only charge it. I never did see the credit come through on my statement. They had charged me for the private play for the day I checked out, even though I was checking out first thing in the morning. It seemed clear that they were systematically overcharging people because the charge for private play was automatically generated as soon as the system registered a new day (i.e., at midnight). Most people never knew they were overcharged. I complained both times. However, both times I told them not to have the manager call. It simply wasn't worth it because I have far too much to do to argue with corporate. Nonetheless their corporate manager called and used corporate spin about their changes, and how they were only doing it for my good. Really? Wasting my time only added insult to injury. Top Notch used to know my dog, what he ate, what he likes, etc. Now they don't know anything about him. They used to provide a "report card" after each stay, telling me how he did. Now you have to log on to their website to see an impersonal computer screen of notes. Honestly, I don't want to log onto yet another website. A 50% increase in price for worse service, $10/day if you don't want your pet to starve, an obviously dehydrated pet when you get them back. And all that for 50% more + a $10 overcharge to boot. And if you'd like, you can also get a phone call with corporate spin. I've given Top Notch $1000s over the last 20 years. They won't get even a single $1 more from me. No thank you, Flop Botch.

Niki loves animals and it shows! I've boarded my twelve year old Brittany Spaniel, Daphne, with…read moreNiki's Play n' Stay a few times for ten days each. Daphne had a restful fun time on both occasions. Daphne is getting older and it's wonderful to have a place for my dog, Daphne, to stay when I'm on holiday. I know she's in great hands. Furthermore, Niki is an expert groomer! I adopted an insanely cool Chinchilla Persian cat, Puffcat, from Niki's Play n' Stay just after winter break. Chinchilla Persians are lovely! The breed requires very careful grooming every 4-8 weeks--including bathing, shaving, and drying with a special high velocity cat hairdryer. Therefore, I just had my Chinchilla Persian, Puffcat, over at Niki's for grooming and he came back looking picture perfect. After his grooming, he's sooooo puffy, smells amazing, and he has been expertly shaved & trimmed. Thank you Niki! Highly recommend!!

Niki's Play N' Stay is the only groomer I trust with my cats -- and the fact that she comes to us…read moremakes it even better. Her mobile setup is spotless, convenient, and completely stress-free for my kitties. Niki is amazing every single time. She's always on time, communicates clearly before and after each visit, and her pricing is incredibly reasonable for the excellent high quality and convenience she provides. One of my cats is... let's just say strong-willed. Her fur had gotten badly matted, and she wouldn't let anyone near her with a brush. I honestly didn't think she'd cooperate, but Niki worked her magic and somehow turned my spicy little fluff into her normal, gorgeous self. She's patient, gentle, and knows exactly how to handle cats with all different personalities. My girls always come back looking runway ready -- like they're about to strut down the catwalk. If you have cats or dogs and want someone who's talented, trustworthy, and genuinely cares, Niki is the one. A true trustworthy gem!
