We had to take our immune-compromised dog to VEG recently after we noticed one of his paws swelling up and turning purple. We were so fortunate to have Dr. Matsuo looking after him. The level of compassion and care that we received from her is unparalleled. She was so patient, kind, called with updates frequently, and genuinely cared about his well-being throughout his stay. When his condition got worse and had to be transferred to specialty hospital, she called hospitals multiple times, trying to get him admitted after being told they wouldn't take him and even escalated to her Director to also make phone calls. She fought for him - fought to keep him alive. After she was finally able to get a specialty care hospital to take him and he was transferred, she called daily to check up on him even after he was discharged from VEG. The world needs more doctors like her especially during difficult times. Dr. Matsuo is a kind human, who gives me hope again that there are doctors out there who actually care about their patients vs. focusing on volume. VEG is so incredibly lucky and fortunate to have her and I highly recommend that if your pet ever has the unfortunate need to go to VEG, you ask for Dr. Matsuo. It has taken me a while to decide whether or not to write this review, but I thought I should share my experience so that others could be well prepared if they are making the decision to bring their dog here for euthanasia. For starters, the reason why I came here was from the phone call I had prior to making this very difficult decision. The person on the phone was very polite and reassuring so I thought this would be a good place. However, I did not realize that the hospital is open area concept and all exams/ procedures are happening right in the center of the room, unless you go into a private room which is where I went. Truth is I never experienced having to put down a soul dog before and the pain is truly unbearable. And being there didn't make it easy because there was no awareness for me and my loved one. The walls feel paper thin and you can hear everything that's happening outside your room. From the laughter to the jokes techs are making which I have no problem with but I had wish someone on the team would had made it aware to staff members that someone in the room next to them is losing their loved one please keep it down so we can respect this moment and mainly just have some Empathy for what's happening, even if it's just for a bit I understand life and work keeps moving but even it had been 30 mins that would have been appreciated..Also there's nothing positive about having to pick a urn and pay a bill before he is put to sleep that needs to wait in my opinion... All in all had I know this I wouldn't have decided to bring him to the ER however his symptoms didn't allow me to do it at home ..or else I wish I would have after this experience I don't think this place is bad I just think there needs to be improvement when it comes to euthanasia at this facility. Having awareness and empathy can go a long way I did speak with someone to voice my concerns and she apologized which I appreciated very much. Just want to recommend people to ask the right questions and remind them this decision does not come likely to make sure you don't go through something like this. We brought our 18-year-old dog in around 4 AM after she had been lethargic and regurgitating for hours. She was barely responsive, and we were honestly terrified. From the moment we arrived, the staff was ready for us--someone was at the door waiting, which immediately put us at ease. The facility is clean, modern, and thoughtfully designed. The open-concept emergency area lets you stay with your pet the entire time, which meant everything to us. Sadly, we had to make the incredibly difficult decision to put our sweet girl down after 18 years. But I can't say enough about how the staff handled everything. Every single person was kind, compassionate, and professional. We were there from 4 AM until about 2 PM, and not once did we feel rushed. They gave us the time, space, and support we needed to be with her through her final moments, and treated her with so much love and dignity. It might make me emotional even writing this review, but VEG saved our kitty's life. Two weeks ago he escaped the house and fell out of a tree; we came rushing up to VEG with a barely breathing, bleeding, banged up little guy. I had called ahead and multiple staff came rushing out to get him, and went to work immediately. Based on what we were being told, we thought he wouldn't make it. Pneumothorax, fever, broken leg, sky high lactate levels, the whole nine yards. We had the kids say goodbye and everything. But between amazing care at VEG, a femur surgery at another clinic we were referred to, and a stubborn will to live, he's still with us. I don't think I was in my right mind that night, but thinking back I appreciated everything from the open floor plan where we had access to him at all times, staff constantly checking on us and giving us updates (both treatment and financial status), a comfortable waiting room, giving our boys quarters for the stuffy machine, and just the general understanding of the staff. I think it's a given emergency care is pricey, so we had that in mind at all times, and they were able to accommodate the options we chose. Took my little frenchie girl Aiko this morning at 5:30 am because she was breaking out with hives. I'm from Hayward so it was a drive out. I just picked the first one on yelp that was open with good reviews. When I walked in I was like wow this is the nicest looking vet ER I've ever seen! The girl checking me in was super nice and let us sit on the couch comfortably while she took our information. The doctor and all the vet techs were all very sweet and came up to give pets to Aiko. These people saved my cat's life and the gratitude I have for them is hard to put into words. My cat, Virgil, who's a year and a half old, suddenly started showing signs of straining in the litter box one Friday afternoon. We have two set up for our cats, and he'd go from one to the other, visibly straining but not producing anything. But he was silent, and I only happened to notice it because I saw how he kept going back and forth between the front room to the boxes and back. I immediately called our vet, who told me to take him to an ER right away because it was possible he was experiencing a urinary blockage, which is deadly in male cats. They recommended VEG. We took him in and they wasted no time taking us into a back room to start examining him and getting all the background info they needed. They call this an open concept hospital, meaning that while they have private exam rooms, all of the procedures happen out in the open in the middle of their airy, large space. I had mixed feelings about it, plus I'm not sure how the animals feel about it when they're already distressed, but I also won't act like I know more than the experts. They also have rooms to accommodate pet owners who would like to stay overnight with their animals so they can get some sleep. This facility is open 24/7. Virgil did have a urinary blockage and needed to stay for two nights to have his bladder drained, be put on antibiotics, and observed to make sure he could pass urine on his own. Luckily he was resilient and made it out ok, but it was a very scary weekend that could've ended differently if I didn't notice and act as fast as I did. The doctors were extremely communicative, calling and texting throughout the days and nights to update us. One minor critique of this is that their text service is one-way only, meaning you can't reply via text, you can only receive them. I do think that should be updated. Virgil received the best possible care and he's still here because of them. Now, I'm not going to pretend this wasn't one of the biggest expenses we've ever had -- it was over $7000 in the end, much of that due to the cost of the overnight stays. It is insane how much pet care costs, and the amount due was eye watering. I can't recommend enough that every pet owner get pet insurance because you never know when something like this is going to happen. Most of the cost was covered by our insurance, but we still had to pay $3000 out of pocket. I'm not sure what the cost would've been at another hospital, but I can at least say the doctor was extremely thorough in explaining what every line item on the bill was and why they needed to do every test and procedure they did. Virgil is home and made a great recovery, and we're extremely thankful for everything VEG did to help him and to educate us on how to try to prevent this from happening again if at all possible. it's already so hard saying goodbye to our beloved pets. thankfully, the staff at VEG made that process as smooth as it could be, given the circumstances. if you need empathy, patience and knowledgable staff from the first call to exiting the facility, this is your place. the receptionist was super kind, offering cookies and warm/cold temp water when i was falling apart and stressed out. while also being efficient in getting my info/the details of my chinchilla's condition over to the doctors. the doctors were very honest and caring of my chinchilla. it's hard enough finding an exotic animal vet near where i am but thankfully they have colleagues with more experience with chinchillas/rodents. they were very sweet to my baby chester. they also have a space with separate rooms with cozy lighting, tissues and a comfy couch, for people to say goodbye to their pets. as i was saying bye to him, they provided different options for cremation and offered to take fur clippings for me. they were very respectful when taking him away because they wrapped him in the blanket that i had brought him in. i requested his whiskers, his tail bristles, and fur from his leg area. they went the extra mile as they captured his white chest fur, plenty of his long whiskers and the softest part of his fur which belonged to the top of his head (that i had kissed prior to letting him go) ultimately, they brought clarity in a situation that i hadn't prepared for and instead of me scrambling in confusion, they were able to guide me through. shoutout to the staff at VEG! read more

Our vet is closed on weekends, and the emergency vet near us was slammed - so we found ourselves here after my dog, Rocky, woke up this morning shaking and refusing to jump or run (very unusual for him). The day before Halloween, we had one of our family members (a senior kitty - 18 years old) deteriorated very quickly and after some labs at a vet, we were recommended to go to VEG. When we brought her in, there was an immediate reaction as someone took the carrier, and brought her to a table, and 4 or 5 people converged on the table along with a veterinarian (Dr. Melissa Ogg). The immediacy and the amount of care for the patient was amazing along with how they treated her. It was the end stage of kidney failure, where there was so much potassium in the blood, that the vet was amazed that the kitty was still with us. They stabilized her the best they could and provided us options for hospitalization if we were to choose it, with the costs and made us aware of the realistic expectations even though the vet knew that we would do anything in our power to save her. We just didn't want her to suffer once we found out the diagnosis. The VEG staff supported us through a difficult time, where we had to eventually make a decision to put her to sleep, and they gave us as much time as we required for both the decision, and to stay with our kitty. She passed away with us being there with her, and we were very appreciative of the VEG staff for being compassionate, but also having the technical abilities and urgency where they took care of her with the utmost care. At a moment in our lives, where we were losing a member of our family - we were very fortunate to have VEG at our disposal, and we know that there is these wonderful people that are there in case we require them again. Grateful for them during our ‼ It was farther for us to drive, but they were so much better recommended than the closer options, that we decided to try it. They saw us quickly, despite having a very busy waiting room. Dr. Swan was so helpful & friendly, during our distressing emergency visit. She quickly solved the immediate problem, which was a rotten, painful tooth. We were given options for other tests, and opted for some -but not all- additional testing. We declined any testing that, if positive, would not result in a treatable condition. We opted to test only the things that would be treatable. That dropped our bill from $1,200 to $600. We felt so bad for our kitty who was in pain, that we paid for the emergency visit. But have a very tight budget, so we had to weigh our options & be wise about it. They gave us good advice that allowed us to make the right decision for our family, and didn't try to force us to every possible thing, which other vets have tried to make us do before. Having the waiting room right off of the open bullpen made it feel like the care team was always just a step away, and they made sure to check in on us throughout our time there. Treating pets out in the open and in the presence of their families (where possible) was a huge positive factor for me. Price of services seemed reasonable and well worth the care provided. Thank you to our doctor (I believe it was Dr. Swan) who was great with our dog and patiently talked through the care options with me. Thank you to the techs/assistant staff who were incredibly gentle and caring during her evaluation and procedure (bee sting removal from tongue). I am writing this so others may not end up like we almost did. Our dog was seen and after $1200 + was told he most likely has cancer and has a month or so left to live. He could walk and was in a lot of pain not eating and couldn't go to bathroom. We decided to put him down for what VEG vet said. We made an appointment for a vet to come to our house that week. WE could stop crying for days. After a day or two we decided to get another opinion at UC Davis. Thank God we did!!!!!!!!!!! Bladder stones and slip disc in spine. A year later still going strong ! Regarding my visit on September 2, 2025: Most of the staff at this clinic was compassionate and supportive. Unfortunately, my experience with the assigned veterinarian, Dr. Hayley Bernal, was the complete opposite--and it left me deeply disappointed on what was already one of the worst days of my life. From the start, Dr. Bernal was impolite and dismissive. I requested to see Dr. Becker, who had treated my dog Leonidas two days prior with kindness and understanding. She flatly refused, insisting she would "handle" the case. When I showed her a video of my dog's seizure, she initially brushed it off--until he had one right there in the clinic. Only then did she acknowledge it as a seizure, with zero apology for disregarding my concerns earlier. As the situation escalated, so did her coldness. After Leonidas endured two seizures in the clinic and had been medicated, I asked for a larger room to wait in while my family arrived. Instead of even a shred of compassion--no "How are you holding up?" or "I'm so sorry this is happening"--she abruptly asked, "Have you made any decisions?" This was regarding the quality-of-life conversation I had started about seizure medications versus euthanasia. To speak to someone so clinically when they're contemplating the end of a 17-year bond with their pet is inexcusable. When my family did arrive, she rushed through his lab results and clinical findings as though she was ticking boxes rather than guiding us through an impossible decision. We ultimately chose to spare Leonidas further suffering. Not once did she offer to make his final moments gentler--a softer blanket, a treat, or the small comforts I later discovered in another room when I returned to hold his body. The contrast between the kindness offered after he was gone and the coldness during his final moments was heartbreaking. A few days later, I called back seeking clarity about why Leonidas had another seizure just 15 minutes after being medicated. Rather than providing a thoughtful answer, she curtly told me to "focus on healing" instead of the past. It was dismissive, unprofessional, and frankly, cruel. In speaking with other staff members, I learned this abruptness is "just how she is." That may be tolerable for colleagues--but for grieving families, it's devastating. Dr. Bernal may have clinical skills, but compassion and professionalism are clearly missing. I will forever resent the way she treated me and my beloved Leonidas. This experience was irreversibly traumatic, made worse by her lack of empathy. If you bring your pet here, I strongly urge you to request another provider--Dr. Becker and Dr. Billote were everything she was not: kind, patient, and humane. Edit: Dr. Bernal did offer me a hug during one of the many times I broke down in tears, but it had the warmth of a light pole. I've been to VEG twice for my senior cat, and two entirely different teams of doctors and nurses cared for her each time respectively. Both were amazing experiences that exceeded my expectations, but I'm mainly writing a review for my most recent visit as it's the emergency visit that led to losing my baby. I came in late on Sunday night because my elderly cat hadn't been feeling well. She wasn't eating, grooming, using her litter... she even refused Churu treats, and at that point I knew something was very wrong. The woman who was at the front desk at the time is named Blair and she's the most lovely and kind lady, a ray of sunshine. My best friend came in at one point to visit my cat, and Blair offered both of us cookies and water. Thanks, Blair! :) Once we were situated in a room, the visit started with a nurse taking her vitals, which were all great and in healthy ranges although I was told that my cat had a heart murmur. Then we did blood work which was where the majority of the problems arose. My cat had irreversible kidney problems, and the potential temporary treatment for her seemed too risky as it could lead to a painful death for her anyway. I wasn't expecting this outcome, and I thought that she was just feeling a little sick and worst case would leave with meds. But that wasn't the case, and I wanted to avoid a painful and sudden death at all costs, so the right choice to make was to euthanize my baby. By early Monday morning I had decided that she would be put to sleep. It was incredibly difficult, easily worst day of my life. Truly beyond words, and I don't think anything will ever top how horrible this day was. Once I got the blood work results back I have been crying and I still haven't stopped at the time of writing this review (I'm crying writing this!!!). But the team at VEG made this difficult process as easy as it could have been. I felt like I made the right, informed decision for my cat. I've never experienced a pet euthanasia prior to this, but they walked me through it step by step and were patient when I asked the same questions multiple times. They were also thorough in explaining each part of her blood work results. The doctors and assistants 100% informed me the process would be very quick and painless, but I wasn't ready for how quick the process actually was while it was happening. I told my baby cat that I loved her multiple times throughout the night, hugged her, told her everything I wanted to say. But I didn't get the chance to tell her I love her while she was taking her last breaths because that was how quickly it went. I spent the entire duration of the euthanasia crying while holding her paw. If you happen to be reading this and are going to euthanize your pet, please hold your baby the entire time while they pass and reassure them that everything is going to be okay. :( Right before she passed one of the assistants shaved off a portion of her fur to place a catheter. I requested to keep it and the lovely assistant placed it in a vial for us to keep. I regret not remembering her name, but she was also SO sweet and made the process a lot easier. Everyone here was kind and compassionate, both times that I visited. The first time the doctor even texted us the next day to check on my cat and how she was doing. I am so thankful that the worst day of my life was with the team at VEG around to support me. Both visits lasted around ~8 hours, which sounds like a long time, but it's an emergency service and understandably they have a lot of pets to care for. For pricing transparency, in total I paid around $1,500 for the second visit. The costs covered everything that I mentioned in this review including the after care services pertaining to the euthanasia. Costs won't come as a surprise because they'll send you a quote before any services are performed, and the bill at the end usually reflects the quote very closely. This is likely going to be the longest review I'll ever write on Yelp, but it was for a heavy experience and I wanted to be as thorough as possible. If you have a very sick furry friend, and/or have to go through the painful process of a euthanasia, you can ABSOLUTELY trust VEG at San Ramon to provide the best care there is for your babies. I really hope that I never, ever have to return, but if I do I know that any pet under their care will be in the best hands. read more

Dr. Ogg was our go-to doctor when my dog was rushed to emergency after having back-to-back seizures, and she is an absolute earth angel. The whole team there is amazing, but Dr. Ogg was our calm through the storm. I was even permitted to stay with him overnight, and I cannot overstate how important and crucial that was for my well being and his healing journey. If your pet is in need of emergency care, definitely take them to VEG ER in San Ramon. Lola got real sick, real fast and by late afternoon we knew we had to get her in to our veterinarian. It was Saturday afternoon and they were closed. The message gave us the phone number to Veterinary Emergency Clinic. My experience at this facility exceeded my expectations. It is a newer (5 years old) clinic and look like a hospital movie set. Doctors, nurses, assistants, on site lab techs, and as I found out, other rooms for treatment with ultrasound and other things. Dr. Lemons, Lola's doctor, should be an instructor on "pet side manor" as she brought calm, diagnosis, and a treatment plan. I would say that she ranks top 5, of all doctors I ever saw, for comforting, handling, and healing. She is tops, 100%. It's been a couple of weeks and Lola is getting close to normal. It took some time and was no cheap. In fact, you had better have PET INSURANCE if you own a pets. Otherwise you'll need a credit card. I don't want another pet emergency, but I am really glad to know that VEG is right around the corner, 24/7/365. Thank you to everyone in this emergency facility! read more

Oct 2024 Callie spent a week here, DKA! The staff saved her life! Upon discharge the internal medicine doctor at beacon vet in Fremont could not get her diabities under control and we almost lost her again (obviously I do not recommend this internal med doctor at all). I'm happy to report that Dr Mathews at OakVet internal medicine in Oakland figured out it was cushings and now she's perfect! Thank you to VEG for not giving up on my girl. I can't thank VEG enough for the care they gave my cat during an emergency visit. He had an open wound, and the moment we walked in, we were triaged within minutes. What impressed me most was that the actual doctor was already in the room--I didn't have to repeat the story a dozen times to different people, which is such a relief in a stressful situation. From there, the vet techs came in to check vitals, and before I knew it, we were in the procedure area. I was shocked (in a good way!) that I was allowed to stay and watch--it really gave me peace of mind to see everything happening in real time. Dr. Nina Matsuo and Nurse/RVT Destiny were absolutely wonderful. Kind, patient, and so sweet--they walked me through every step and made sure I understood what was happening. Their compassion really made a scary situation so much easier to handle. While I truly hope I never have to step foot in an emergency vet again, VEG will always be the first place I think of if I ever do. When my dog woke up limping, I naturally was extremely concerned. However, she is an older dog, and I wasn't sure if she just jumped out of bed and landed on it funny. I called VEG to find out to get their opinion because she was showing no other signs of injury or being ill and while I want to make sure she is OK, I also didn't want to be stuck with a large bill unnecessarily. The woman I spoke to was wonderful and was able to give me very good advice as well as let me know that if payment is an issue that they have the ability to work with us on that. Fortunately, my dog was just fine, but if I ever need an emergency vet for any of my animals, I will absolutely be coming here. read more

This is the second time I've been here, came back because the service the first time was so outstanding. Brought my little buddy Bandit in thinking he was on his way out. Very sad. Just a few minutes into the visit I was told he had an abcess rupture, and was dealing with sepsis. Within hours surgery was poverty and he's on the mend. They are true life savers. This place is the best you never want to have to bring your friend. Totally open and you're welcome to stay, watch, be right by their side. Everyone here is so friendly and helpful. I hope I never need to come back, but if the need ever arises, I'll be back! read more

The Most Compassionate, Efficient ER Team I've Ever Seen I came in after leaving another vet that couldn't treat my cat Minnie's cluster seizures. I called ahead, and by the time I was running to the door, a team member was already holding it open. They immediately asked if she was the cat with seizures and whisked her to the table with calm urgency. Their open-concept hospital means you can see everything happening in real time. Almost the entire staff gathered around Minnie, moving in sync -- no tension, no ego, just a shared focus on saving her. I've never seen teamwork like that anywhere. They let me sit with Minnie, right in front of her cage, to comfort her -- something no other ER has ever allowed. That simple act meant the world to both of us. On top of their medical skill and compassion, they worked within my budget without compromising care. Minnie was treated like she mattered, and I was treated like a partner in her care. I took my dog here for an emergency after being referred by another clinic. We did have to wait about 1 hr before we were able to see a doctor, but one of the nurses mentioned they were doing a shift change so it might take some extra time. The nurses and doctors were all very friendly and were very patient with my dog who was not doing very well. They kept me well informed during the whole process and what the recommended next steps were. The night doctor was also able to get us a referral to a surgeon in Oakland the next day. read more

This is the second time I brought my Husky here for an emergency. We drove (drive) from San Francisco to come here because the emergency vets we have (in SF) honestly suck! The first incident (2024) was rat poison that she got into. They literally saved her life. I APPRECIATE the swiftness! Our puppy somehow managed to step on a bee and got stung in her paw, causing her to walk a little funny and for her paw to swell up. We immediately headed to VEG (recommended by our regular vet) to get some help. Upon walking in, we were wowed with the clean, welcoming environment and appreciated the open layout. It was amazing to be able to stay with our baby throughout the entire visit, easing some of her anxiety as she's pretty skittish. Ultimately, she had to get sedated to allow anyone to look closely at her paw. The staff was super professional, playing with her to get her comfortable and letting us hold her as they administered the sedative. They located the stinger in her paw in a matters of minutes and sent us home with some pain medication to aid with swelling. It was comforting to hold her through the process of her going in and out of sedation. Our little Birdie is back to her usual enthusiastic self, running around the yard on normal paws! Thanks to VEG. Hopefully we won't need to come back, but I wouldn't hesitate to return with any of our pets. read more

So it's 10pm and we notice our Cairn terrier has an eye issue. We headed into this ER and within 5 minutes he was already being checked by a nurse. I called the clinic to explain my dog's health issues and drove all the way from San Mateo to San Ramon. Over the phone, I spoke with the front desk and some doctors and explained everything. When I arrived, staff seemed surprised I was there and acted dismissive, making me feel like my dog's problem wasn't important. When I saw Dr. Rosella, the billing process was confusing -- I was told the quote "covered everything," but later received a much higher bill than expected. Most concerning, they completely missed a visible eye problem that any competent vet should have noticed. The experience felt negligent and unprofessional. I do not recommend this clinic. read more

To begin with- staff are top Notch.. when you have a sick pup and you're looking for a place to take her this is the place to be. They have an open concept floor plan that allows all the dog parents and family to be with their pet and watch everything. And I mean every procedure for every other dog too. My furbaby had to be hospitalized - so we were able to stay in a suite (couch , toothbrush etc ) to stay comfy with our sick baby. Main thing I was informed of the medical plan by the doctor and nurse and kept up to date on what was going on. You do have to pay ahead of time- and they will refund whatever is not done. It is pricey but I don't think you'll find another hospital that isn't pricey. So far - I would recommend this hospital to everyone. read more
